Last January, six months after Fox News ousted its chairman amid a sexual harassment scandal, the network’s top-rated host at the time, Bill O’Reilly, struck a $32 million agreement with a longtime network analyst to settle new sexual harassment allegations, according to two people briefed on the matter — an extraordinarily large amount for such cases.
Although the deal has not been previously made public, the network’s parent company, 21st Century Fox, acknowledges that it was aware of the woman’s complaints about Mr. O’Reilly. They included allegations of repeated harassment, a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of gay pornography and other sexually explicit material to her, according to the people briefed on the matter.
It was at least the sixth agreement — and by far the largest — made by either Mr. O’Reilly or the company to settle harassment allegations against him. Despite that record, 21st Century Fox began contract negotiations with Mr. O’Reilly, and in February granted him a four-year extension that paid $25 million a year.
All of this occurred after Megyn Kelly left the news outlet and they were attempting to convince the public that they were cleaning up "the workplace culture."
Apparently the Murdoch family huddled together and decided it made better business sense to extend O'Reilly's contract than to risk losing him, despite these numerous allegations and setttlements.
Clearly not a great business decision since they were forced to kick him out only four months later.
Someone on Twitter wanted to know just what could somebody do to another person that would cost 32 million dollars to cover up?
That is a good question, but not one I am sure I really want to know the answer to.
I have virtually NO doubt that the workplace sexual harassment is continuing at Fox News and that new allegations are forthcoming.
You just don't clean up a pigsty like that in such a short amount of time.
Fox News will not renew its contract with Sarah Palin, whose bombastic appearances have been a cable staple since the former Alaska governor’s failed run on John McCain’s ticket in 2007. When asked for comment, a Fox News spokesperson confirmed the network had amicably parted ways with the governor on June 1.
Palin, 51, is expected to make occasional guest appearances on Fox and Fox Business, and will appear on other networks and cables. She has a show on the Sportsman Channel, does a lot of speeches, and will announce a new publishing project soon.
When Palin was at her zenith, she made frequent appearances, and Fox installed a camera at her house. But executives consider her less relevant now, and her appearances were sometimes hampered by the vast time difference with Alaska.
And so it finally ends.
Somehow I think these "occasional guest appearances" will be really,. really occasional. Like maybe never.
A Palin confidant tells the Erik Wemple Blog that Palin’s contract with Fox News guarantees the cable-news leader exclusive rights to her work on television and on the Internet, an arrangement confirmed by a Fox News source. The Breitbart.com posting violates the terms of Palin’s relationship with Fox News.
“It was a mistake,” says the Palin confidant. “She had in her mind that she was propagating something under the auspices of the PAC.” That would be SarahPAC, “a federally registered political action committee (PAC) dedicated to building America’s future by supporting fresh ideas and candidates who share our vision for reform and innovation.”
So Palin is falling back on the PAC-byline-contributor-contract loophole. That’s a savvy, insider-ish move for someone who so routinely claims to abhor the ways of Washington.
To be honest I would have thought that Fox News would not want their name associated with this particular level of lunacy, but then again is there any level of lunacy for which Fox will not provide air time?
This of course is not the first time that Palin has crapped on her contract with Fox.
You might remember that Palin announced the fact that she was not running for President in 2012 on the Mark Levin show.
Which of course was months after most people realized that she had no intention of launching a campaign.
I find the fact that Fox News entertains any perception that Palin is in any way loyal to be completely pathetic on their part. After all this is the woman who quit her job halfway through, teased money out of supporters for years about a possible presidential run, and threw staff and family members under the bus without a second thought.
And now she is threatening to quit the party that brought her to national attention because they will not do what she wants.
There is not a loyal or honorable bone in this nasty woman's entire immediate body.
As you may remember from a previous post there was this guy working for Fox News for eight years who is now gleefully dishing in a new book about the online "talent" and the atmosphere at the most slanted news outlet in America.
So of course you KNOW he had to eventually get to Palin:
“She is every bit as good-looking, and is also every bit as dumb, as they say,” he says.
“We knew immediately it was not working out with her.”
Palin exhibited “the worst type of diva behavior” while collecting $2 million a year from Fox, and “could not be bothered,” Muto said.
“We had to track her down and beg her to be on the show, and she was under contract.”
Okay I am guessing that Muto has not seen Palin recently and is probably still rememebering what she looked like back in 2009 in order to say somethig like "She is every bit as good-looking" as people say. However there is no doubt the "and is every bit as dumb, as they say" is still factually correct.
So here she quits her job pretending to run the state of Alaska, to have a book written on her behalf that she can take credit for, and to become a paid contributor to Fox News. A job which she forces people to hunt her down in order to make her do
Yep that sounds like the Sarah Palin we know and loathe.
This in fact may be the EASIEST job that Palin could have ever talked somebody into giving her, and she was such a fucking diva she could not even do THAT with any enthusiasm.
And people seriously believe that she would want to serve in the Senate?
Essentially the woman wants to be paid simply to exist.
We were delighted to discover that Sarah Palin is a regular reader of Seattle Weekly and that she has such a strong opinion on the direction of our content. While I disagree with her accusations of elitism, I welcome her contribution to the conversation. Like Mrs. Palin, I extend my congratulations to the graduating class of Republic High School. Unlike the former governor, I urge the students not to judge their fellow citizens solely by the circumstances of their upbringing. Whether born and raised in a city or a small town, as I was, every one of us deserves the opportunity to contribute to our community and to be judged by the integrity and honesty with which we live our lives. Yep nobody is much impressed with the Queen of Mean's petty middle school tantrums these days.
The entire video is quite informative, and you should watch it all, but this is the portion that I found interesting considering what has happened the last few days. And it starts at the 3:26 mark in the video:
Reporter: "In each case there is that disconnect between the public and private image of these individuals."
McGinniss: "Never more so than with Palin, She is all about image. It was remarkable talking to people who've known her from her childhood, her young adulthood, her time as mayor of Wasilla, even as governor of Alaska, they didn't recognize this woman they saw on national television, She utterly transformed herself. There's never been a greater dichotomy between the image and the reality,"
Joe goes on to describe Palin as "a nitwit," "a religious fanatic," vicious," "spiteful," and "ignorant." You know, accurately.
After that he goes on to say, when speaking of his friend Roger Ailes, that "I can guarantee you that Roger's not going to renew her contract with Fox News. It runs through this presidential campaign. Roger told me two years ago, we had lunch, and I was just starting my work on Sarah Palin. And he said 'Joe, why are you writing about her? She's so stupid, she's such a nitwit, and she's never going to be anything in American politics. Her time is already over. In 2012 she's not going to be the candidate. She couldn't possibly be the candidate. Too many people are getting to know her, and what they see terrifies them.'"
So I guess for any of those people that think Palin really had a shot at renewing her contract, not so much.
In fact in the Daily Beast article, titled "Fox Made limited Effort to Keep Sarah Palin," that cane out yesterday it all but says as much. They made a tiny offer, just to say that they had (And to keep her crazed fans from burning down their building,), but Ailes was just done with her.
Now here is an interesting thing. I don't think I knew that Joe had revealed that part about Roger Ailes last spring. I did cover his Australian trip to some degree, but I think I may have missed this particular interview.
However back in 2010, while sitting on that porch in Wasilla, Joe DID hint at something similar during a conversation with me. Of course it was told in the strictest of confidences but Joe did tell me that Ailes truly disliked Palin, and that he had done nothing to dissuade him from writing about her in a book.
Apparently what he meant was that Ailes had not tried to talk him out of writing about her for HER sake, but instead apparently suggested he not write about her for HIS sake, because she simply was not worth it.
And do you know what? In the end I think Roger Ailes may have been right.
After a three-year run as a paid contributor to the nation’s highest-rated cable news channel, Sarah Palin and FOX News have cut ties, according to a source close to the former Alaska governor.
“It’s my understanding that Gov. Palin was offered a contract by FOX, and she decided not to renew the arrangement,” the source close to Palin told RCP. “She remains focused on broadening her message of common-sense conservatism across the country and will be expanding her voice in the national discussion.”
The source declined to say whether Palin would pursue a television contract with another news network, such as CNN.
Suuure she was offered a contract at Fox, that she turned down! After being the biggest embarrassment on a cable news network that is literally wall to wall embarrassments, that would make perfect sense.
My gut tell me that Ailes could hardly wait until her contract ran out, and if she was offered ANYTHING at all it was undoubtedly nothing more than the chance to occasionally chime in as one of the peanut gallery that Hannity has on his shows that kiss his ass and tell him how awesome he is.
Of course for most of us on this side of the internet this revelation comes as no surprise, as our intrepid blogger buddy Malia Litman reported this yesterday over on her blog. Not to mention that we all were pretty convinced she was toast way back in the beginning of this month.
So I guess it is nice that the rest of the media finally caught up with us, don'tcha think?
You know I REALLY do think that Palin was seriously attempting to market herself to CNN, which might explain why she was sucking up to them late last year, but even though CNN has shifted noticeably to the Right I don't think that the real journalists like Soledad O'Brien would stand for having to share airtime with the Lunatic from Lake Lucille.
Wow! You know I always knew that this was the eventual outcome of Palin's career with Fox News, but now that it has actually happened I find myself a little disappointed that it was not a little more dramatic. I would have enjoyed watching some on air sniping back and forth during her final appearances, but she was probably afraid they would pull the plug on her even faster if she did that.
However I have to say that I would be very surprised if this was the last we heard of Sarah Palin. Her ego is much too big to allow her to simply disappear completely from the public arena, despite our wishes to the contrary.
Besides don't forget that she has that really prestigious appearance at Terry Schiavo Day in Philadelphia. And who knows, that might lead to other appearances at celebrations nobody has ever heard of commemorating people who were once in a catatonic state. Personally I think events like THAT would be the perfect fit for Palin, don't you agree?
P.S. I will contact my spies in Wasilla and have them keep an eye out for when the Fox News truck pull up to take back their equipment. THAT should be worth a post or two.
Yes, Ms. Palin’s contract with Fox News has ended, and no, it is not being renewed. A Fox spokeswoman confirmed Friday that Fox had parted ways with the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee, effectively reducing her exposure to the channel’s millions of loyal viewers.
It was unclear whether the parting was Ms. Palin’s choice, but it was described as amicable. Bill Shine, an executive vice president at Fox, said in a statement, “We have thoroughly enjoyed our association with Governor Palin. We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
And if you buy THAT I have a bridge to nowhere I would be happy to sell you. Trust me, NOBODY ends their relationship with Sarah Palin amicably.
Update 3: Okay Politico has compiled a number of "must see" Sarah Palin moments on Fox News. Even watching the various wig changes with the sound off is HIGHLY entertaining!
Okay, THAT was awesome, and also kind of answers any question as to why Palin is no longer employed with Fox News. Crazy is one thing, but that level of batshit crazy is even too much for the folks at Fox.
