The smirk wiped from his face, a crying Martin Shkreli was sentenced to seven years in prison for securities fraud Friday in a hard fall for the pharmaceutical-industry bad boy vilified for jacking up the price of a lifesaving drug.
Shkreli, the boyish-looking, 34-year-old entrepreneur dubbed the "Pharma Bro" for his loutish behavior, was handed his punishment after a hearing in which he and his attorney struggled with limited success to make him a sympathetic figure. His own lawyer confessed to wanting to punch him in the face sometimes.
The defendant hung his head and choked up as he admitted to many mistakes and apologized to the investors he was convicted of defrauding. At one point, a clerk handed him a box of tissues.
"I want the people who came here today to support me to understand one thing: The only person to blame for me being here today is me," he said. "There is no conspiracy to take down Martin Shkreli. I took down Martin Shkreli."
I don;t typically like jury duty, but I would have GLADLY served on this jury just to watch this smug POS bawling like a baby when he realized that he was going to the big house.
Just in case you do not realize what a scumbag this guy is, let's take a walk down memory lane:
Shkreli became the face of pharmaceutical industry evil in 2015 when he increased by 5,000 percent the price of Daraprim, a previously cheap drug used to treat toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection that can be fatal to people with the AIDS virus or other immune system disorders.
Shkreli seemed to treat the case like a big joke. After his arrest in December 2015, he taunted prosecutors, got kicked off of Twitter for harassing a female journalist, heckled Hillary Clinton from the sidewalk outside her daughter's home, gave speeches with the conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos and spent countless hours livestreaming himself from his apartment.
He also infuriated members of Congress at a Capitol Hill hearing on drug prices when he repeatedly cited his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Afterward, he tweeted that the lawmakers were "imbeciles."
Last fall, the judge revoked his bail and threw him in jail after he jokingly offered his online followers a $5,000 bounty to anyone who could get a lock of Clinton's hair.
It is no longer politically correct to wish that bad things happened to people in prison, but in this case I am willing to make an exception.
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

So yesterday Dr. Larry Nassar was sentenced to another 40 to 125 years in prison.
Courtesy of NBC News:
Larry Nassar, the former Olympic gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor accused of molesting 265 girls and women over two decades, was sentenced to another 40 to 125 years in prison on Monday for molesting three of the victims under the guise of medical treatment.
Eaton County Court Judge Janice Cunningham said she didn't believe Nassar — who as recently as last month was claiming his invasive pelvic procedures were not sexual — was truly remorseful.
"I'm not convinced that you truly understand that what you did was wrong and the devastating impact you have had on the victims, their families and friends," the judge said. "You are in denial. You don't get it."
Nassar had previously been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison so clearly he will never breath the air as a free man again.
Nor should he.
I have to imagine that there are sexual predators all over the country who pissed themselves a little after reading about this verdict.
It is a new day, and women are demanding a reckoning.

Florida man faces 120 year sentence for firing two shots in the air while threatening neighbors. Sounds about right to me. Update!
Courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel:
A Jacksonville man is facing a 120-year sentence for firing two shots that caused no injuries, The Florida Times-Union reported on Sunday.
The trial of Army Veteran Randal Ratledge, 58, is scheduled to start with jury selection on Monday. Defense attorneys have asked the judge to waive the mandatory guidelines, but court officials said Judge Jack Schemer is bound by the state law.
Ratledge, 58, was charged with six counts of aggravated assault after a 2012 incident involving his neighbors. Authorities said Rutledge fired shots in the air and screamed profanities at the six neighbors. He was charged with one count of aggravated assault on each of the neighbors.
Florida has a 10-20-Life when it comes to convictions for firing a gun and apparently the judge thought this guy deserves life. Though at 58 even a 20 year sentence would probably keep him in prison for the rest of his life.
I have to say that I think stricter penalties like this one might just make all of these open carry assholes think twice about pulling out their shiny metal penises whenever they feel their manhood is threatened, or maybe simply leave them at home altogether in order to avoid the temptation, and ultimately that would make ALL of us a hell of a lot safer.
Update: Okay so after a few people left comments and sent me e-mails I reread the article more closely, and it appears that the headline in the Orlando Sentinel is incorrect and should read "Florida man faces 20-year sentence for firing 2 shots." Not 120 year sentence.
I have no idea how the story managed to get published with such a glaring error, or why it has not yet been corrected. After all THEY have editors.
Sorry for the misleading information.

Oscar Pistorius receives a five year sentence for murdering his girlfriend in cold blood. And the kicker? This did NOT happen in America.
Courtesy of the BBC:
South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been given five years in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge.
The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over. The defence said it expected Pistorius to serve about 10 months in prison.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder.
Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term, and the defence had argued for community service and house arrest.
This POS fires a gun through a closed bathroom door, when only he and his girlfriend were in the house. How is that NOT murder?
Witnesses heard arguing and a woman screaming before the gunshots. That does not sound like there is any possibility that Pistorius was asleep and did not know that his girlfriend was awake as well.
And the defense was incredibly weak as there was NO reason for this asshole to believe that there was a home invasion, and every reason to believe that the person behind the locked bathroom door had to be his girlfriend. And yet he can fire through the door killing her and only get a five year sentence?
I'm sorry that just drives me crazy.

Gabrielle Giffords and husband Mark Kelly, confront Jared Loughner at sentencing.
Here is the statement read by Mark Kelly in its entirety courtesy of the Huffington Post:
Mr. Loughner, for the first and last time, you are going to hear directly from Gabby and me about what you took away on January 8th, 2011 and, just as important, what you did not. So pay attention.
That bright and chilly Saturday morning, you killed six innocent people. Daughters and sons. Mothers and fathers. Grandparents and friends. They were devoted to their families, their communities, their places of worship.
Gabby would trade her own life to bring back any one of those you savagely murdered on that day. Especially young Christina-Taylor Green, whose high-minded ideas about service and democracy deserved a full life committed to advancing them. Especially 30-year old Gabe Zimmerman, whom Gabby knew well and cherished, and whose love for his family and his fiancee and service to his country were as deep as his loss is tragic. Especially Judge John Roll, whom Gabby was honored to call a colleague and friend and from whose interminable dedication to our community and country she gained enormous inspiration. Gabby would give anything to take away the grief you visited upon the Morrises, the Schnecks, and the Stoddards – anything to heal the bodies and psyches of your other victims.
And then there is what you took from Gabby. Her life has been forever changed. Plans she had for our family and her career have been immeasurably altered. Every day is a continuous struggle to do those things she was once so very good at. Gabby is a people person: she exudes kindness, creativity, and compassion. If she were not born with the name – “Gabby” – someone would have given it to her. Now she struggles to deliver each and every sentence. Her gift for language can now only be seen in Internet videos from a more innocent time.
Gabby was an outdoor enthusiast. She was often seen rollerblading with her friend Raoul in Reed Park, hiking in Sabino Canyon, or careening down Rillito Wash Trail on her bike, as she was the night before you tried and failed to murder her. She hasn't been to any of those places since, and I don't know when she’ll return.
There’s more. Gabby struggles to walk. Her right arm is paralyzed. She is partially blind. Gabby works harder in one minute of an hour – fighting to make each individual moment count for something – than most of us work in an entire day.
Mr. Loughner, by making death and producing tragedy, you sought to extinguish the beauty of life. To diminish potential. To strain love. And to cancel ideas. You tried to create for all of us a world as dark and evil as your own. But know this, and remember it always: You failed.

Jerry Sandusky essentially gets life in prison for crimes against children.
Courtesy of the Business Insider:
The former Penn State assistant football coach convicted of molesting 10 young boys over a 15-year period will be spending 30 to 60 years behind bars, according to Bloomberg News.
Jerry Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts of child sex abuse.
Today's sentence means the 68-year-old will conceivably spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Before sentencing the disgraced coach, Judge John Cleland said the case is "a story of betrayal. You abused the trust of those who trusted you," the New York Daily News' Sports I-Team tweeted from the courtroom.
Incredibly Sandusky is arguing to stay out of solitary confinement, which he would undoubtedly be placed into for his protection.
He also denied his guilt in rather bizarre and rambling testimony before his sentencing:
Sandusky said in his statement that he has spent his time in jail meditating, writing, exercising, and reading books about persecution and struggle. He said he has faced "outbursts by troubled inmates" and "special inmates who have smiled at me."
"Somehow, someway, something good will come out of this. These are people I cared about, still do. I used to think of ways to praise them, to help them have fun."
"To my loved ones I want to say, the most difficult part is the pain of separation. Some of the labeling hurts but they don't compare to the pain of their absence," he said.
You know besides the years of molestation inflicted by Catholic priests, and the churches attempts to cover up their crimes, I don't think I can remember a more egregious example of a person, or persons, victimizing children in this manner.
It is just very troubling that Penn State covered for him for all of those years, simply to protect their reputation and continue to win football games. I find that almost impossible to comprehend.
And it just makes me wonder how many more Jerry Sanduskys there are out in the world, currently being protected by organizations that value their contribution over the lives of innocent children?
