A poll released this week by National Journal, a Washington magazine, showed Mr Gore moving into fourth place when Democratic “insiders” were asked who had the best chance of winning the party’s 2008 presidential nomination – up from ninth place in December.
Mr Gore insists he has “no plans” to run again and that he is committed to his campaign to protect the planet.
But for some Democrats he represents a viable alternative to Hillary Clinton, the 2008 frontrunner, who they fear is too polarising a figure to be elected president. With a network of activist supporters and financial backers and an aura of celebrity, he is one of the few politicians who could enter the race late in the game and be able to wage a national campaign.
Gore certainly represents the fly in the ointment for Hillary. He has the kind of credibility that Hillary would kill, for and he is from the Clinton White House which many Americans are remembering with a growing sense of nostalgia. He is untouched by the scandals which plagued Bill Clinton and, by being part of the soap opera, Hillary Clinton as well. Al Gore was not standing in the Oval office as Bill got his knobbed polished. He is the squeaky clean Clintonite.
My take is that he could not only be nominated, but that he could win the White House in a walk. Many of us believe he should have been President for these last six years and cannot help wondering what our country would have been like if he had been.
If Al Gore does not listen to his handlers too much he could very well be our candidate in 2008.
P.S. If I might make a suggestion Al, perhaps you could look to Senator Edwards as a potential running mate. He deserves a second chance as well.
P.S.S. Oh and Al? Could you possibly just kiss your wife off camera please? Thanks man.
