The Iraqi government is kaput!

Radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's political bloc has suspended participation in Iraq's national unity government in protest at the premier's meeting with the US president.

"The Sadr group suspends its membership in parliament and in the cabinet as a protest against the visit which is considered as a provocation to the Iraqi people," a statement from the group said Wednesday.

Perhaps even more devastating to this fragile government then the civil war raging through their streets is this schism that now erupts between the government and al-Sadr.

It makes no difference how many Iraqis ran around wtih purple fingers, if in the end the government loses the support of those same people. And this is a clear indication that that has indeed happened.

And al-Sadr is playing his cards exactly right. By pulling away from the sinking ship of the Malaki led government he shows himself to be politically savvy and capable of bringing a vast amount of support to himself. Which also indicates that he may be able to rise up to lead Iraq, or some section of a splintered Iraq in the near future.

But the Maliki led government is mortally wounded and may only have months left before it finally disintegrates.
