Nuclear Doomsday clock moves the closest to midnight than it has since 1953.

Atomic scientists reset their symbolic "Doomsday Clock" to its closest time to midnight in 64 years on Thursday, saying the world was closer to catastrophe due to threats such as nuclear weapons, climate change and Donald Trump's election as U.S. president.

Its hands were moved to two minutes and 30 seconds to midnight, from three minutes. 

"The Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than it's ever been in the lifetime of almost everyone in this room," Lawrence Krauss, the bulletin's chair, told a news conference in Washington. 

The clock was last set this close to midnight in 1953, marking the start of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Thursday's reset was the first since 2015.

Physicist Lawrence Krauss laid blame for this decision squarely at the feet pf Doanld Trump and his puppet master Vladimir Putin.

Just when you thought the news could not get any worse.

Speaking of Right Wing nutjobs, what's Michele "crazy eyes" Bachmann been up to lately?

So one time Congresswoman from Minnesota, Michele Bachmann has been on a tour of Israel with Family Research Council president Tony Perkins.

During the last week of this tour she appeared on Perkins' radio program, where she said this as reported by Right Wing Watch: 

“Almost every article in the paper” has to do with conflicts in Israel, Bachmann said, “and it ties with so much biblical prophecy. This week really was about biblical prophecy in many ways. And we’re seeing as events are speeding up, events are speeding up so quickly right now, and we see how relevant the Bible is, and we’re reading our newspaper, at the same time we’re learning about these biblical events, and it’s literally day by day by day, we’re seeing the fulfillment of scripture right in front of our eyes, even while we’re on the ground.” 

“We recognize the shortness of the hour,” she said, “and that’s why we as a remnant want to be faithful in these days and do what it is that the Holy Spirit is speaking to each one of us, to be faithful in the Kingdom and to help bring in as many as we can — even among the Jews — share Jesus Christ with everyone that we possibly can because, again, He’s coming soon.” 

So to be clear Bachmann is visiting the Jewish state of Israel, you know a place bursting at the seams with Jewish people, and pushing for their conversion to Christianity as quickly as possible, based on her belief that Jesus has already bought his return ticket and is on his way.

Now that does not sound very respectful of other religions does it?

But once again THAT is what motivates these fundamentalist Christians to support Israel.

They say they love the people of Israel, but only because they believe that two thirds of them need to die in order to usher in the return of Jesus. And that once that happens the rest will convert to Christianity.

In fact they love them much like they love the soldiers who they eagerly send off to die in foreign lands to protect the "homeland" and of course the flow of their precious oil.

Bachmann is only saying out loud what all of them believe in their hearts, and that is that Israel exists solely so that THEIR messiah can return, and after that the people of Israel will have served their purpose.

Sarah Palin takes to Facebook to kiss up to the Jewish people. However her motives are far from pure.

Of course as we have discussed here on IM numerous times Palin's support for the Jewish people and Israel has NOTHING to do with any altruistic feelings, and EVERYTHING to do with the Fundamentalist's belief that it plays a very important part in the  second coming of Jesus Christ.

She cares nothing for the Jewish people, and instead sees them only as a means to an end. The End Times that is.

Interestingly enough a new show on HBO, Vice produced by Bill Maher, addressed this very situation recently.

It is certainly not shocking to learn that Sarah Palin is a religious nut who supports the oppression of an entire race of people, simply to usher in a supernatural occurrence that she believes allows her access to eternal life. And it offers yet another opportunity to point out that Sarah Palin does NOTHING that does not, in some way, benefit Sarah Palin.

Speaking of the End Times now some Fundamentalists are saying that the recent red moon sightings are the newest sign.

And speaking of Passover, it is a celebration of an event that never actually took place.

Sarah Palin goes to the social media outlet used by teenage girls to talk about their hickey's, to accuse the Obama administration of acting immature.

Israel is once again feeling the brunt of the Obama administration’s enemy centric foreign policy. First, Secretary Kerry put our ally Israel in an untenable position with the deal he brokered with Iran over its nuclear ambitions, then he suggested that Israel could face “delegitimization” and “boycott” campaigns if it didn’t agree on the Obama administration’s idea of a peace deal with the Palestinians, and now he’s denouncing Israel for building homes in a Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem. The Israelis are quite appropriately upset about the treatment they’ve received from Kerry. (And remember kids if we don't stand up for Israel there will be no second coming of Jesus, so we have to support EVERYTHING they do!) And how has the Obama administration responded? Well, National Security Advisor and former UN Ambassador Susan Rice went on Twitter to chastise Israel for criticizing Kerry!

Should I mention that Susan Rice was responding on Twitter to a video made by the Israeli settler's lobby to mock the Secretary of State and then posted on the social media site YouTube?

Seems like Twitter would be the appropriate forum in which to respond to me. What should she have done instead? Called a press conference and condemned them formally?

I mean it's not as if she were lame enough to constantly bitch about the President on Facebook, hoping that some news organization might notice or anything.  After all that would be pathetic.

Let's face it Palin does not care about Israel, but she is afraid that if President Obama makes peace with Iran she will not get to meet Jesus. And for a crazed Christian Dominionist that is the worst of all possible scenarios.

Four reasons that Christian Fundamentalists are looking forward to the End Times.

1. They don’t think they’ll be around for the worst of it. Modern American fundamentalist Christians believe in something that has never before been part of Christian tradition: the Rapture. The idea is that the true believers will be whisked away into heaven before the ugly parts of the end times begin. The idea was invented in the 19th century but only took off in the late 20th century because of pop culture products like the Left Behind series. As Christian writer and critic of evangelical culture Fred Clark explained, it’s an “escapist fantasy” and a way to avoid having to consider the possibility that they may die. 

Christian writers don’t really hide that this is what’s going on with end times hope. As blogger Nathan Jones said, “It is an amazing hope to have because we can know that as terrible as it is getting out there, believers in Christ don't have much longer to worry about it.” 

2. The end of the world would mean they get to have the last word. One thing that’s indisputable is that if the apocalypse does come and it unspools as Christians predicted, they will have won the argument! As Doug Weaver, a professor of religion at Baylor, explained to the Washington Post, “I think history will tell you that end time predictions increase when people are being persecuted or feel persecuted.” 

While conservative Christians are most definitely not being persecuted, watching their privileges decline often makes them feel persecuted. When you feel put upon, mocked and persecuted, the desire to show your opponents you were right all along can become overwhelming. So much so, that you’re willing to wish for a fiery apocalypse just so you can say I told you so. 

3. It provides a distraction from and an excuse to avoid the real problems in the world. The appeal of apocalypse fantasies is mainly that they help believers avoid the fear of death. (A secular version of this can be found in zombie apocalypse stories, which work because the audience identifies with the survivors, not the people who die, i.e. zombies.) However, belief that the end times are near is used by conservatives all the time to direct their followers politically. 

4. They want to see the non-believers punished and themselves instated as the rightful rulers of all mankind. In 1980 , Pat Robertson laid out this hope bluntly, predicting that World War III and the end times were upon us, saying, “sorrow and bloodshed that will have no end soon, for the world is being torn apart, and my kingdom shall rise from the ruins of it.” 

Or as Fred Clark said in his criticisms of the apocalypse fantasy books in the Left Behind series, “The authors' real message for those they regard as unsaved is to thumb their nose and do a little victory dance.” 

This eagerness to see the non-believers punished is so strong in the Christian right that many are unwilling to wait until the so-called “Tribulation” described in the Left Behind books, and to a lesser degree the Bible, is upon us. That’s why, after any great tragedy, there is a rush of eager-beaver pastors willing to say this is what people have coming for being sinners, from Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blaming “pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians” for 9/11 to John Hagee blaming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on gay pride parades.

Now take a moment to remind yourself that THIS is the mindset embraced by numerous politicians currently creating policy for ALL of us, and of course standing in opposition to policies that would benefit the planet and its people. 

And we also recently learned that we could count Justice Antonin Scalia among the superstitiously driven powerful men whose decisions have everlasting impacts on our nation.

Those who believe that the Rapture is nigh upon us, and further, that they themselves are among those who will leave this polluted overburdened orb for a chance to party with the Prince of Peace himself, should be kept as far away from politics as possible.

As Bill Maher pointed out last Friday: 

"If you think the world is about to end that's your right. But you don't get to vote on next year's budget, because it doesn't concern you." 

Personally I have to wonder why you would hire one of these simple son-of-a-bitches to do ANY job?

Why show up to work on time, put in 100% of your effort, or treat others with respect if you think your Greyhound bus to paradise is about to drive up and whisk you off at any moment?

I would MUCH prefer to work alongside an Atheist who is grateful for his time on this earth and wishes to protect it for future generations to come.  A person who does the right thing, BECAUSE it's the right thing. A person who treats even the least among us with respect because he knows we are all in this together and, without a omnipotent deity watching over us, we need each other to survive and flourish.

But hey, that's just me.

How the Republican Religious Right does not fear the consequences of a government shutdown or default, because you know Armageddon.

It’s hard for the Christian fundamentalists who run the Republican Party now to worry about the serious economic danger they’re putting the world in, because they are swept up in worrying that President Obama is an agent of the devil and that the world is on the verge of mayhem and apocalypse if they don’t “stop” him somehow, presumably be derailing the Affordable Care Act. Christian conservatives such as Ellis Washington are running around telling each other that the ACA will lead to “the systematic genocide of the weak, minorities, enfeebled, the elderly and political enemies of the God-state.” Twenty percent of Republicans believe Obama is the Antichrist.Washington Times columnist Jeffrey Kuhner argued that Obama is using his signature health care legislation to promote “the destruction of the family, Christian culture”, and demanded that Christians “need to engage in peaceful civil disobedience against President Obama’s signature health care law”. 

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops joined in, demanding that the Republicans shut down the government rather than let Obamacare go into effect. The excuse was their objection to the requirement that insurance make contraception available without a copayment, saying ending this requirement matters more than “serving their own employees or the neediest Americans.” 

The Christian right media has been hammering home the message that Christians should oppose the Affordable Care Act. Pat Necerato of the Christian News Network accused the supporters of the law of committing idolatry and accused people who want health care of being covetous. The Christian Post approvingly reported various Christian leaders, including Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, saying things like the health care law is “a profound attack on our liberties” and lamented “Today is the day I will tell my grandchildren about when they ask me what happened to freedom in America.” 

Some in the Christian right straight up believe Obamacare portends the end times. Rick Phillips, writing for Christianity.com, hinted that Obamacare might be predicted in Revelations, though he held back from saying that was certain. Others are less cautious. On the right wing fundamentalist email underground, a conspiracy theory has arisen claiming that Obamacare will require all citizens to have a microchip implanted. While it’s completely untrue, many Christians believe that this means the “mark of the beast” predicted in Revelations that portends the return of Christ and the end of the world. 

 In other words, the Christian right has worked itself into a frenzy of believing that if this health care law is implemented fully, then we are, in fact, facing down either the end of American Christianity itself or quite possibly the end times themselves. In comparison, it’s hard to be too scared by the worldwide financial collapse that they’re promising to unleash if the Democrats don’t just give up their power and let Republicans do what they want. Sure, crashing stock markets, soaring unemployment, and worldwide economic depression sounds bad, but for the Christian right, the alternative is fire and brimstone and God unleashing all sorts of hell on the world.

Damn am I tired of all of this ridiculous shit! You simply cannot reason with people who are this insane.

And people wonder why I spend so much time talking about religion on this blog. How can I not?

The BlackBerrys that were pried from the hands of White House employees in 2013 are now piled up on the Potomac as a flood barrier against the ever-rising tide from melting ice caps. Their owners, unable to check their messages, went insane long ago.

Because there was no endgame, the capital’s hunger games ended in a gray void. Because there was no clean bill, now there is only a filthy stench. Because there was no wisdom, now there is only rot. The instigators, it turned out, didn’t even know what they were arguing for. Macho thrusts and feints, competing to win while the country lost. 

Thomas Jefferson’s utopia devolved into Ted Cruz’s dystopia. 

Law and order broke down as police, who were not getting paid, eventually decided to stay home. The fanatics barricaded in the Capitol dug in, determined to tear down what their idols, the founding fathers, had built. Darkness soon devoured the rest of the country.

Whose to blame you may ask? Who do you think?

A gaunt man and sickly boy, wrapped in blue tarps, trudge toward the blighted spot that was once the World War II monument, scene of the first shutdown skirmishes. They know they may not survive the winter.

“Americans had been filled with existential dread since the 9/11 attacks, but they didn’t realize the real danger was coming from inside the government,” the man says. “It started very small with a petty fight over a six-week spending bill but quickly mushroomed out of control.”

The man tries to explain: “The Grand Old Party, the proud haven of patriots who believed in a strong national security and fiscal responsibility, was infected with a mutant form of ideology. It was named the Sarahcuda Strain after the earliest carrier. Remember when you saw that old science fiction movie, ‘I Am Legend’? A scientist described the virus that burned through civilization as being like ‘a very fast car driven by a very bad man.’ That’s what happened: In the infected Tea Party politicians, brain function decreased and social de-evolution occurred. They began ignoring their basic survival instincts. 

“It’s hard to believe now, but they were fixated on stopping an effort to get health care to those who couldn’t afford it. It eventually led them to destroy all the things they said they held most dear.” 

The boy is confused. “They killed America because they didn’t care about keeping Americans alive?” he asks.

But yes in the final analysis the young boy's question is absolutely accurate.

I don't always enjoy Maureen Dowd, but this is a must read and it does a pretty great job of putting a rather ridiculous conflict into a context that is both entertaining as well as informative. .

I was going to post something, but why bother since the earth has undoubtedly come to an end? After all, if you can't trust a Mayan just who CAN you trust?

So I am robo-posting this in anticipation that the earth just exploded and I have finally returned to the stardust from whence I come. However I realize that due to the time zones I may in fact be among the LAST people to realize that the earth done gone boom.

So anyhow if any of you wake up and realize that all of the predictions were the result of a bunch of overly excitable ignoramuses let me know and I will continue to do what I do.

I think my personal philosophy at times like this is best summed up by one Colonel Nick Fury.

"Waiting for Amageddon" A MUST SEE film about the Evangelical community.

For those who have already seen Jesus Camp" you already have some idea s to what this film is about. And if that one kept you up at night, THIS one will give you night terrors.

 The movie is an hour and twelve minutes long, but I do encourage you to watch it, even if it takes you a few attempts to get all the way through, because I feel it will do much to educate you on a certain politically connected segment of the Christian community.

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of this kind of superstition is that even those with higher education do not seem inoculated against its influence.

It is THIS mindset, and THESE people who are driving our foreign policy in the Middle East, and who bear much of the responsibility for the strained relations between America and the Muslim community.
 
My favorite quote is from Rabbi Felix Rogan: " The Jesus written about in the New Testament is a collage. Many, many of the miracles, and the details of his life, the kinds of things you would put on his curriculum vitae resume, these are repeat stories. And whether there was in fact an historical Jesus or not, our sources indicate that he was a witch, or sorcerer, and a guy who had his eyes on the ladies, and not the greatest guy in the world. And we don't think he's coming back."

Now THAT would probably not go over too well in the Evangelical community, but is is probably the differing point of view that they should all be exposed to at an early, early age. You know before their brains are completely washed of any cognitive reasoning skills.

When is an earthquake not just an earthquake? When one of those "Rapture ready" morons gets caught in his hotel room by one.

Now do you see why I have so much disdain for organized religions?

Seriously, people actually buy this dimbulb's books and alter their  lives because of the insane crap he writes in them.  That should be a criminal offense, don't you think?

Besides this so-called "expert" on the end times cannot even identify a real sign of the coming Armageddon. Earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes are child's play.

But if Sarah Palin were actually to be elected the President in 2012?  Now THAT would be a sure sign of the end of the world as we know it.

"Death Panels, Obamacare, Iranian nukes, oh my!" Sarah Palin gives bizarrely hyperactive interview to Newsmax.

One of the great things about being irrational and non-reality based like Sarah Palin is that you are never wrong and you can keep right on talking about your refuted claims of "death panels" in the health care bill as if real and not just a figment of your overly Red Bull stimulated brain.

(The hair is really bothering me, and I am now all but certain it is a wig.  Also while I am being shallow, Palin literally looks like she is shrinking before my eyes. Her outfit is hanging on nothing but skin and bones and I am wondering if she is overly stressed about something or even perhaps ill?)

Okay talk about projecting, is she really suggesting that President Obama is the one who has people pulling his strings? I mean REALLY?

As for her "concerns" about Iran.  Make no mistake Palin is not worried that Iran WILL use nukes to attack Israel or their other neighbors and usher in World War lll, she is worried they won't.  Because if Iran developed nuclear energy, and even nuclear weapons, and did not do anything more than provide energy for their people and protect their nation, then there would be no hope for the Fundamentalists who believe that warfare in the Middle East is vitally important to usher in the second coming of Jesus Christ.

At the end of this, somewhat spastic, interview Palin once again plays coy about running in 2012, Here is a transcript of her answer this week: "It isn't my call, it is the people of America, whether they were ready for somebody a bit unconventional, out-of-the-box, umm being use'ta taking on the establishment on both sides of the aisle or if they want someone a little bit more conventional, maybe a little bit more ELECTABLE and that's..thats' who they would support..umm..I just wouldn't close the door to the idea but..uh..very, very focused on the midterms."

Yep she is definitely running.

Though she is a national laughingstock to most, Frank Schaeffer reminds us that Palin is also the de facto leader of a scary bunch indeed.

Palin comes from that world of hysterical paranoid delusion. It's her attraction to the people who like her. God has "raised her up for such a time as this" they believe. It is why Fox "News" just hired her as another one of their fair and balanced commentators.

Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series of sixteen novels (so far!) represents everything that is most deranged about Palin's religion, and understanding why those books are popular is the key to "getting" the Palin Fox "News" deal...

The Left Behind novels represent the fundamentalist end times view that Palin buys into. They have sold tens of millions of copies while spawning an "End Times" cult, or rather egging it on. Such products as Left Behind wall paper, screen savers, children's books, and video games have become part of the ubiquitous American background noise.

Less innocuous symptoms include people stocking up on assault rifles and ammunition, adopting "Christ-centered" home school curricula, fearing higher education, embracing rumor as fact, and learning to love hatred for the "other," as exemplified by a revived anti-immigrant racism, the murder of doctors who perform legal abortions, and even a killing in the Holocaust Museum.

No, I am not blaming Palin, Jenkins and LaHaye's product line for murder or racism or any other evil intent or result. What I am saying is that feeding the paranoid delusions of people on the fringe of the fringe --- people who think they alone are "Real Americans" --- contributes to a dangerous climate that may provoke violence in a few individuals.

I encourage you to click the title of this post and read the entire article by Mr. Schaeffer. It is very detailed and simply packed full of frightening and sometimes unbelievable facts about Sarah Palin, the teabaggers, and exactly WHO is supporting them.

It is important to note that THESE people are going to support Sarah Palin no matter what kind of evidence is revealed about her illegal or scandalous activities, her hypocrisy, or even the truth behind the children. The people who REALLY support her simply will not hear ANY of it until it is thrust DIRECTLY into their face!

Which is exactly why I am THRILLED that Sarah Palin is on Fox News! You see I know much, but not all, of what is about to be revealed about her, and I can hardly wait to watch her have to deal with it on television! It will play out right in the very living rooms of the dimwitted Fox cable news viewing audience that adores her.

No longer can Sarah hide behind ghostwritten Facebook posts. Now she has to stand out there and face the music on her own. And her true believers will have a front row seat to all of it!

Oh sure Fox will try to protect her as much as they can, but even they will not be able to provide cover for a barrage of negative information like this. And they simply WILL NOT be able to ignore it. It will be everywhere, and if FOX tries to pretend that it is not happening they will reveal themselves to, not be a real news channel, but instead an obvious propaganda machine for Sarah Palin, the teabaggers, and their ilk.

Frank Schaeffer is completely right in telling us that the people who follow Sarah Palin are frightening in their ignorance, so let us see what happens when the negative information about their idol filters into their consciousness from the very place they go to have their ignorance reinforced.

Update: Just to give you a taste of what kinds of things are happening behind the scenes here in Alaska, and on this blog, here is an example of the kinds of things that show up in my e-mail every single day. (This example was posted on a conservative blog.) I have had a number of new sources come forward and have become privvy to a lot of crazy information. I am sorry if things are not happening at the pace to satisfy some of you, but I also must point out that we have already seen quite a lot of damaging information revealed.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a "nonlethal presidential finding" that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran's currency and international financial transactions.

"I can't confirm or deny whether such a program exists or whether the president signed it, but it would be consistent with an overall American approach trying to find ways to put pressure on the regime," said Bruce Riedel, a recently retired CIA senior official who dealt with Iran and other countries in the region.

So while we pretend to be opening diplomatic talks with Iran for the first time we are also trying to undermine their government, and we expect this to make them trust us?

Look the facts are that George W. Bush believes that he has been chosen by God to help bring about the second coming of Jesus Christ. He does not care about diplomacy, or global warming, or future political considerations because he is out of his freaking mind!

I know that this sounds a little crazy as well, and I thought so to the first time I heard it, but if you examine closely the things that Bush has focused on, like filling his cabinet with "born again" Christian's, and trying to expand the Executives power, and fanning the flames in the Middle East, I think you have to put your skepticism aside and consider that Bush may in fact be insane which is why impeachment really is the only hope our country and the world has left.

I know reading the above post may make you want to send me all of your unused tin foil for my new hat, but the more of these things I see the more I am convinced that Bush truly believes that the end times are just around the corner. If you have been hearing excerpts from Ronald Reagan's diary being read on television you may have become aware that Ronnie expected the end times to occur on his watch as well. But the difference is that Reagan did not seem to be dedicated to making it happen. I think that Reagan trusted that God would do it in his own time, but Bush does not like to wait for anything. He wants it now, and he is in a position to make it happen.
