Democrat Mark Begich has defeated Republican Sen. Ted Stevens in the election for U.S. Senate.
Begich issued a statement shortly before 5 p.m. claiming victory.
“I am humbled and honored to serve Alaska in the United States Senate,” Begich said. “It’s been an incredible journey getting to this point, and I appreciate the support and commitment of the thousands of Alaskans who have brought us to this day. I can’t wait to get to work fighting for Alaskan families.”
The Stevens campaign has made no comment.

Well it certainly could not have happened to a nicer, more deserving guy.
I have every confidence that Mark will do a great job, and finally allow Alaskans to feel pride in who is representing them to the rest of the country.
This marks a new, and much better day for Alaska, and I am proud to send at least one Democrat to join Barack Obama and the Democratic majority as they work to repair the damage done to this nation by the Bush administration and their minions.
And I still hold out hope that we will soon conduct a recount and that afterward Ethan Berkowitz can also go to Washington to represent Alaska and her interests. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Yesssss! High five, Grypen!

I have to say that the power of change has not been more clearly exemplified by any other state than Alaska and it's faithful citizens. It is with a great amount of sincere enthusiasm that I celebrate vicariously this victory with you.
ReplyDeleteYou stood up and spoke out when it was considered impolite or discourteous to your governor to do so. You stood up for one man's integrity, while others remained mute and blind to the injustice of defaming a good man's name/record of service.
No other state demonstrated for change like Alaska. No other state rallied behind hope like Alaska. No other state stood on the collective integrity of its own diversity and demanded to be heard like Alaska.
Democracy in action. Every time I came here or any other Alaskan blog, read about rallies, outcries, demands for accountability, I always sat back in amazement and said, "THAT'S democracy in action."
The power of the people, baby! Well done, Alaska! Well done indeed.
