Perhaps the only Republican that concerns me for 2012, is Texas Governor Rick Perry.

That secession thing is bad, but is it bad enough to stop this guy if he decided to run?

Well, Perry's not a clown. Should he decide to run, it would be a cake walk to become the GOP candidate considering the current state of the Republican field (if you can call it a field). Then President Obama could have a real fight on his hands - real debates - real issues - real experience - real ideas to lead the country. Might we be heading into a real election?

As a Texan for many decades, I will say that you have every reason to worry about having Rick Perry become President of the US.

That, my fellow Americans, would not be a good thing.

Rick Perry is the embodiment of everything about politicians that people mistrust.

If you think it is bad now...

Oh, I don't know, Gryphen. He's declared August 6 a day of prayer and fasting and is holding a big prayer event in Houston (I think) for America to return to the path of righteousness. He's asked all the other governors to join him. Last I read no one has taken him up on it.

This may go over well with the "foundation" fundies, but it's not the way to win over independents.

From his proclamation: "In times of trouble, even those who have been granted power by the people must turn to God in humility for wisdom, mercy and direction. In the spirit of the Book of Joel, Chapter 2, Verses 15-16, I urge a solemn gathering of prayer and fasting. As those verses admonish: "15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly... 16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly..." As Jesus prayed publicly for the benefit of others in John 11:41-42, so should we express our faith in this way."

Quoting both the Old and New Testament. Wow! SP will have to wear her giant cross, her star of David and her flag pin. She'll never get passed the metal detectors.

Really?? You think that seceding from the US of A sits well with us "Outsiders" down here in the lower 49? You gotta get out of Alaska more often. It might fly with the non educated cult members of the $arah Payme religion, the AIP, and those who know nothing about history; but the rest of us do NOT want another civil war.

Yikes! Do not even entertain this thought of Scary Perry. Governor Big Hair has screwed up Texas enough....let's NOT let him loose on the rest of us.

I don't see it. His appeal to the independent vote would be very limited. At best he could count on 40% to 45% of the popular vote. I see him able to carry few if any of the 2008 blue states. Just my opinion.

Rick Perry is a murderer. Okay, I know people will think this is an extreme position, because he didn't go out and put a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger, but he is a murderer to me. And innocent man was allowed to be put t death on his watch and a report landed on RP's desk detailing the many many fallacies and problems with this man's conviction -- like the investigators were untrained in arson studies -- and he ignored it and let this man die because he had taken flack for giving another man clemency. Let an innocent man be executed for political reasons=murder in my mind. And you KNOW he's guilty because he then he disbanded the commission that was looking into this.

Also, I'm pretty sure all Republicans are doomed in 2012 because of Paul Ryan's Medicare plan.

  7. I think that we're too smart to elect a guy who even looks and sounds like Bush (although he looks like he smoked). Aren't we????

Boy it sure was the "Obama will be defeated by the economy" meme yesterday. Every "flippin'" (sorry, I just couldn't resist) news outlet had that drumbeat yesterday.

OT I've been reading the LA Times stories of the e-mails this AM. The problem with the journalistic translation is that it takes away from the "mean girls" tone of the e-mails. So far, it's no surprise to _me_, since I read Frank Bailey's book. Certainly lends credibility to Frank, doesn't it. ;-)

Rick Perry is a sleazy, slick piece of work.

Here in Texas we are literally having to close down schools. Much needed schools.

But Perry is just letting it happen despite the "rainy day fund" which has BILLIONS in it. He's so worried people will say he left Texas "poor", he would rather close down these schools than use a fraction of the rainy day cash.

He is every bit as shamefully exploitive as Palin...only scarier, because Gov. Goodhair is actually smart AND deceitful whereas Gov. Shapeshifter is stupid- but incredibly devious.

A Palin/Perry ticket would be about the worst disaster I could think of.

Perry is a bit of a nightmare for anyone who thinks sanely. Check out his record . . . .

He lied about his state deficit, it came out right before the election--too late.
He used big money to make himself at home after he moved to another "governors mansion" after the original needed repaired. He routinely vilifies the federal government for spending but is always howling with his hand out. He's got an execution cover-up scandal, his appointees are always nuts and get in trouble. And the secession thing just does not look good for someone who wants to be president--and he pushed it pretty damned hard. And I believe ole Rick thinks the nations problems can be cured with a whole lot of praying.

He's pretty much where the others in the GOP are--just with a bit more personality.

He's an idiot Gryph. Not so say there aren't people who don't vote for idiots (see most of the republican governors on WI, MI, OH, FL, NJ). But they are sorry now.

And---he loves Palin. Which tells you what level he is truly playing at.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Gryphen, he has some other major skeletons in his closet that are pretty common knowledge here in Central Texas -- He doesn't maintain a viciously homophobic public persona for nothin', you know. Plus there are plenty of financial improprieties to be found. Mostly I'm amazed that he thinks he can survive the glare of a national media campaign. Hubris. Typical GOP hubris.

I don't understand how secession movements in certain states is bad. It's quite understandable for Tx and AK to have huge Sec parties. They're both extremely independent. I don't know the stats on Tx and Gov dollars but Ak did rely heavily on them, yes. However, do you really think AK would flounder if not a part of the US? I don't. I think it would offer the world a lot more and flourish.

Rick Perry could be a decent candidate. However, Herman Cain is the ideal candidate in every way.

There are many republicans who would talk rings around Obama in a Pres debate. Actally, most of them could. The party just has to play it smart. Ha!

You really think Perry , a governor for life of Texas , is a threat? Who was the last cowboy governor of Texas who became president, again? Yeah, I thought so.

Perry is a total wing nut who is not electable in a general campaign. That secession talk will play over, and over, and over, and to pit it bluntly, Perry is basically a step above Shrub in the intelligence category.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous5:39 AM

he will have to come out of the closet if he wants to run for office. or we will kick him out of the closet. whichever works better.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Anonymous@5.19a - I think you're seriously deranged if you think Obama would be even challenged in a debate with any of the Republican front-runners.

And I have heard plenty of "rumors" about Perry's sexual preferences. There's a reason he's a typical Republican homo-phobe.

Then, once Sarah is VP, Perry will meet a tragic demise, and Sarah will become the first certifiably insane POS.

Rick Perry or Chris Christie, either of those fellows would be a force to be reckoned with.

At least in Christie's case, he blinks (unlike Sarah.) He knows his limitations and knows he needs to bone up on governing, policy and a record of accomplishment. He's also got school age kids that he actually worries about. I don't like the man or his politics but I respect his restraint on answering the lure of running for POTUS when he's got his first statewide elected term to concentrate on.

Perry must be getting a lot of calls from people begging a 'real' conservative to run, he must be worn down by the pressure and adulation that he could lead the whole country.

The big and bright stars of Texas must be glowing in his eyes of late.

Tricky Ricky may or can win the GOP nomination but not the general, this man has does NOT debate. He will run, lie, say he is busy to stay out of debates because he is full of it.

The sheep that vote for him in TX are just that, sheep, but those with one individual thought in their head will see him for the joke he is. He has filled ALL the regencies/agencies that needs no confirmations with his cronies.

The A&M regents board along with alumni will eat his tail alive.

He says he is conservative but his actions prove him wrong, he will NEVER put himself out where he actually has to answer a question.

If he were to run too many skeletons will come to national light which can bring the feds to investigate too many things he has done here.

Hell the Obama admin shut him up in an hour after he complained about the wild fires out of control with no help from the feds. It was pointed out he got RID of the agency that put out these fires, so the money was there but no agency to direct the funds or fight.

Gov Goodhair is content working his 7 hours a week, setting up his cronies in plush jobs to steal from Texans. He knows he has no chance to win but the national spotlight will shine on some of his illegal/questionable actions.

I still can't figure how a city that voted for a lesbian mayor was so close in the votes for Bill White & slick rick.

as a long-time resident of Texas, I'll add my warnings to the ones above- he should not be underestimated. Perry has managed to package his particular brand of poison in a way that stands to appeal to both Tea Party and entrenched GOP establishment- he was able to take out Kay Bailey Hutchinson for the GOP primary in the last governor's race and so far has shown no shame about unabashedly playing the secessionist/tea party card while simultaneously currying favor with the establishment and taking federal funds with both hands while screaming about Obama being a red/socialist/radical/big government threat to moral christian society. and while I may pray that the ghost of Cameron Todd Willingham (google and read New Yorker article about him) will detroy his chances, I wouldn't hold my breath.

One thing about Perry strikes me though- if Perry gets the nomination, he won't need Palin. You choose a VP candidate based on what your own candidacy lacks. By himself, Perry already covers whitey, rural seniors who love Jesus and Medicare while remaining deeply distrustful of black men and large government. Adding to the fact that Palin has been underlining the fact that she is B-A-N-A-N-A-S for the past few months, Perry might want to choose a credible semi-conservative to help him in Ohio and Indiana- he'll already have the South covered. In which case, perhaps Our Lady of Vitriol should seriously consider a third-party run- her ability to fund-raise and remain relevant may disappear unless she can carve out a role for herself some other way. although Sarah- I'm sure if you begged, he might find a Cabinet position to suit your talents.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You can never count out a Presidential candidate from Texas, especially when there isn't any candidate from California or New York. All those electoral votes are a huge advantage.

"And innocent man was allowed to be put t death on his watch and a report landed on RP's desk detailing the many many fallacies and problems with this man's conviction -- like the investigators were untrained in arson studies -- and he ignored it and let this man die because he had taken flack for giving another man clemency."

Nobody has ever lost an election for being too tough on crime. And being tough on crime means that innocent people are executed along with the guilty ones.

I'm from Texas and I can guarantee you that with the shady garbage he has pulled (Trans-Texas Corridor, shortchanging education, charging taxpayers $10k a month for a rent-a-mansion, etc) there isn't a snowball's chance in hell. He made Gardasil shots mandatory for teen girls (pissing off conservatives) and sonograms mandatory for abortions (pissing off liberals.)

Don't worry about Perry. He'll get what's coming to him, and it's not a Presidency.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous9:17 AM

Perry's real threat is that he is a member of the Bush Mafia.

Bush got the governorship defeating a sitting governor with a 60+% approval rate, and we all know what happened to the Presidential elections of 2000 and 2004.

The Bush Mafia cheats and they have the machinery in place to get away with it.

I voted against Bush 4 times and against Perry several times before I had to leave Texas to find a job. I will gladly vote against him again, but both Duhbya and Whorehouse Perry keep winning.

4:04 The media spews stuff that just makes me sick. I'm sure there is no fight between Palin and Bachman, but the news is saying there is. They are now declaring Palin as a 'hard working' governor since the emails came out (not true - ask the Alaska Legislature members and Alaskans).

We NEVER hear the positive stuff that President Obama has, and is, accomplishing in spite of the Repubs in Congress constantly trying to block everything he does (now they are going after 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell).

All they (Congress/Repubs - House) are doing is work on social issues (much more interested in womens reproductive issues) and not working to establish job opportunities in the U.S.

I seriously believe they are doing everything they can so as NOT to increase jobs in order to make President Obama look bad with the hopes of him not being reelected because of it. Do you ever see that view discussed in the news? Never!

I stopped watching my local news at 5/6 p.m. as well as the national news. I now get the majority of my information from various sources on line - European news is much more interesting to follow. The BBC, etc.

And, I will vote for President Obama AGAIN in the next election.

I very much dislike the lack of respect that is shown to President Obama and his lovely wife. Americans have become very embarrassing and we look like idiots to the rest of the world. (Palin has helped in that regard too!)

Perry is a joke, he has literally bankrupted Texas and used the stimulus funds he complained about and then begged for more. The Texas economy is slightly better than most states for one reason and one reason only, FEDERAL DOLLARS.
There are massive construction projects on most of the military bases across the state and don't forget about the border construction jobs.
As a Texan during these economic times I have been quite lucky to get quite a few of those construction bids for our medium size green build construction management firm-- over 30 million dollars in federal dollars over the last 2 yrs and we are far from being one of the big players in the construction world--though our certified green build has helped us. While that certainly is NOT our profit margin and on the first few jobs I under bid a little too much, it has kept our employees working and collecting a pay check.
FYI once you get a government construction job, they give you a rating...if you do a bad job, or overrun the projected timeline without a legit reason(weather days etc) you will not get another one. If you maintain a high rating it is much easier to get a bid accepted. We currently have crews working on one section of border, and 2 crews on military jobs as I type--with another 2 "big bad govmint" jobs to start within the next 2 months.

So my friends--THAT is why the Texas economy looks slightly better than most other states

I've lived in Texas for most of my adult life. He might have a couple more IQ points, but other than that, he's a beefier, hairier, wing-nuttier, more homophobic GW. With a Palinistic desire to turn us into a theocracy. In some ways, I hope for him to run so that enough comes out to get rid of him as governor.

If you think Alaska would flourish as an independent country, ditto Texas, then I suggest you move to one or the other and get involved. I personally would love to see either or both walk out of the Union. Alaska would be begging within months, putting in taxes, cutting spending, it would be a hoot to watch them have to form up their own "army", would look like something out of a "B" movie, bunch of backswoodsmen standing around holding their Remington's, a few AK's, their uniforms would be Levi's and flannel shirts and their transport of choice a twenty year old Jeep with a ripped fabric top. Please do secede Alaska, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out

Rick Perry has an atrocious record as governor of Texas that should give pause to anyone who thinks his experience in that capacity translates into the ability to leadf this country. He embraces the very same backward, regressive ideas of the GOP, policies which have been detrimental to Texas as in other states that have been in the news lately. The fact that he was willing to let an innocent man be executed for political reasons is another illustration of his moral bankruptcy. He is already just as bereft of ideas suited for progress in the 21st century as the rest of the GOP clowns vying for the nomination.
