You might be able to fool the general public about the success of the Palin propaganda film "The Undefeated," but you CAN'T fool the movie critics!

Image courtesy of the amazing Love and Knishes.
From Box Office Mojo:

Normally, a movie with such poor box office would not receive story coverage on Box Office Mojo, but the furor over The Undefeated calls for an injection of truth.

Even before The Undefeated bottomed out in its second weekend, the movie was a bust in its first weekend, but its boosters latched onto two stats: per-theater average and ranking among political documentaries. The classic tactics of movie spin include bragging about per-theater average and declaring a high ranking in a niche category. The funny thing is that Undefeated's opening didn't rate highly on either front, making the spin extra-egregious.

Within the minor political documentary sub-genre, The Undefeated's $6,532 opening weekend per-theater average ranked 33rd out of the 91 limited openings tracked over the past 30 years, normalized for ticket price inflation. Among all documentaries, it was in the middle of the pack. Hardly worthy of hyperbole. Even if it had little to no advertising, Undefeated had far more media coverage than most other political documentaries and independent releases could ever dream of. The awareness was there.

Undefeated boosters ran with the notion that the movie's opening had the "second highest per-theater average of the weekend, behind only Harry Potter," but the movie was actually sixth in that metric. They also latched onto a press release about how The Undefeated averaged "above $11,000 in top markets." But averages are naturally higher in top markets (that's why they're "top markets") and, without context (how it compared to other movies' grosses in those markets), that was a meaningless statistic.

It's extremely myopic to believe that having one of the higher per-theater averages on a given weekend means a movie is a success, and The Undefeated's second weekend bore that out. Indeed, "per-theater average" is one of the most overrated stats. For limited releases, the most receptive locations are cherry-picked with the purpose to impress with a high per-theater average in order to book more markets. The fewer the theaters, the easier it is to have a higher average.

To put these numbers into further perspective: The Undefeated's ten theaters on opening weekend yielded 159 showings. Using the current average ticket price of $7.86, that means the movie played to an estimated 52 people per average showing or at about one-fifth to one-quarter capacity. In the movie's second weekend, which had 211 showings, the per-showing average attendance dropped to 15.

Damn, I like how this guy Brandon Gray left absolutely NO doubt that this movie was an unmitigated disaster.

Not really much argument left is there?

Which makes THIS, seem just that much more pathetic.

The path to the White House runs through the theaters across America showing this film.

We need to sell those theaters out! No more excuses, no more complaints. Let’s show the world why we support her. Show them this film! We need your help to make this happen. We can’t sit silently anymore. Now we must act.

Special incentives:

Each Youth For Palin's Youth Brigade member will receive special rewards including $$ compensation and/or a donation to our group (your choice). special recognition, and other items.

Game On!

Personally I think that any parent who encourages their child to pimp this move for Snowdrift Snooki should be brought up on charges of child abuse.

It finally dawned on me who the Palin-bots who are refusing to see the writing on the walls about Palin's pathetic propaganda piece remind me of.  They remind me of those Japanese soldiers who stayed at their posts for decades because they did not realize the war was over.

So exactly how does semi-filling a theater with people already so enamored of Sarah they can't think straight show the film to the rest of us? I guess the idea is that if they can semi-fill a few cherry-picked venues they can keep it out there one more week. And surely, if the movie is on the screen, even those of us who hate the grifter for what she has done to this country will be tempted to find out what they see in her! I get it...we will be wooed by their dedication and love...we won't be able to stay away, and then, voila! The Undefeated will be a success.
Take a note, Palinbots: We will never set foot in a screening of her propaganda film. We will never sent one red cent to SARAH{AC. We will never subject our children to the mayhem that is Sarah Palin. And we will never, ever, consider voting for her for dogcatcher, let alone anything important. She is using you...wake up.

I've never seen people so brain-washed by an ideal that they lose their sense of reality. The movie is a DOG. It's a BAD movie.

What's interesting is how they haven't accepted this fact and started blaming Bannon for this new smirch on Sarah's career. "It's all HIS fault Sarah's star isn't rising because HE made a crap movie!"

That's the usual spin from the Bots. But I guess they're so desperate to have hope to cling to they're going to tell themselves it's a wonderful movie and---gosh! If only more people saw it everything would be OK again.

Youth for Palin??!! Seriously? Someone has read an awful lot about Hitler in the Palin camp. Long before dear Adolf got elected to anything he and his advisers knew they needed the "youth"...to sway parents, to be the future believers and they began cultivating them.

Having lived in Germany for many years and asked many questions I have no doubt this woman, her clowns and others follow that playbook. I was in Germany not long after WWII and asked HOW people could believe such bullshit. I asked about the Hitler youth. Boy did I get an education from those that experienced it. Fascinating that it became so easy to fall in line.

Before anyone has a fit I'm not saying Palin is Hitler. I'm saying some of their tactics are similar. Unfortunately for The Quitta from Wasilla it won't work this time. Their will be NO President/Fuhrerin(gotta put the "in" when it's female)nor Palin Youth, nor PP (Palin version of the SS)or Reifenstahlesque laudatory films. There will be NO Palin presence in D.C. But we must always be vigilant because that's how idiots gain power...when people don't pay attention to ugliness clothes in cuteness. Just how she became Governor.

The desperation of Palin and crew makes the air smell like manure.

Not only can you not fool movie critics, you can't fool Sarah's precious Free Market.

The market spoke, and Sarah's Key, an obscure foreign language movie, opened to $115,708 at five locations this past weekend over Palin's $101,382 at ten locations in ten days.

This past weekend, The Undefeated grew to 14 locations, but much like her CEO 'Governing,' VP campaign and reality show, popularity/business plummeted 62% after roll-out.

Sarah, you are a loser, you may not have produced this movie (you didn't have the courage or would spend a dime of your unearned money) but it had your boney hand prints all over it.

As usual, you wanted to deflect blame or take all the credit for however the movie played out in the market.

This is so sad. I actually feel sorry for these people. They're trying so damned hard, and Sarah doesn't give a damn about any of them any more than she cared about her own daughter, Brisket, when she threw her under the bus at the RNC in '08!

Even if we couldn't stomach her conservative woman red-jacket credentials, reading this corny propaganda piece reads like any Palin material, desperate for relevance and coming off as extraordinary.

LOL, she's an online mortgage university instructor with eight week training courses. When's she going to incorporate Tea Party Constitutional 'law?' From reading this, it looks like 9-11, the housing collapse and Frank-Dodd really worked for her company, but I'm sure that's not how she spins it with the Palin base, it's all Obama's fault and he's guiding this country off a cliff. . .

I think they are so desperate because Sarah probably told Bannon she'd make up any shortfalls. Haha. And we all know what a cheap ass Sarah is . . .

Poor Sarah. First Bristol dragging her carcass around on DWTS would make the world love her. Then her reality series would make the world love her. Then her ghostwritten wastes of paper would make the world love her. Now this idiotic documentary is supposed to make the world love her. Those poll numbers keep dropping though.

MS PAYlin, here's what will stop you cold from running a successful campaign.

  67. You know. I can't imagine any sane theater owner, no matter their political persuasion, giving up valuable theater space and time to this turkey. They *know* it's not going to make money.

Plus there's that limited release thing.

Could it be that this is the equivalent of a self-published book? Did Sarah-Pac or the Producer or whoever BUY a run at these theaters? Could this push to "sell out" the theaters just be a marketing gimmick for whoever to get their money back? It's expensive to rent one movie theater for a day let along 10 for what? Two weeks? A month? How long is this movie supposed to run?

I can't see any sane theater owner allowing this thing to run when you could yank it and put just about anything in it's place, including the ORIGINAL Undefeated in it's place a sell more seats. Unless.....they can't because they've signed a contract accepting money to show this turkey. Usually a theater owner pays to run a movie. I think the theater owners were PAID to run this movie.

If you want to get a reasonably accurate guesstimate of the best Sara has in the way of support you might find a handful of the smaller market cities where they thought her base was congregating.

Take the total number of ticket sales over the two week run and divide it by the population of the surrounding area. Let's say fifty miles. That number is probably a true test of her real base. Anyone who is truly mentally ill enough to attend her movie and join her team to attract more loonies is probably a pretty small number. The media plays to her because they know they get clicks and readers/viewers. If she was just another average looking loonie she wouldn't get squat. Anyway there are people who like to see train wrecks and she is certainly one of them. And she'll delude herself she's relevant even when the majority of the people simply shake their heads she's so shamelessly out wrapped around the stripper pole known as SARAPAC

    Gryphen-

I take great umbrage with your palin-bot and Japanese soldier analogy.

The Japanese (though our hated enemies at the time) were true warriors and clung to their code of Bushido. What they did was out of courage and patriotism to their country.

What the palin people do is out of sheer stupidity and naivete- or perhaps nearsighted and inbred spitefulness.

Do not sully the brave cloak of these former enemy warriors with the shit stains of the ignorant.

It's already a failure if you have to BEG and THREATEN your OWN constituents to go see it.

    Who are they kidding?

Palin must be in deep denial or Bannon is finding out that he put his money on the biggest loser of all. The poor panty sniffer.

    Brilliantly insightful post!

Hitler's minority party pounced on the opportunity of confusion when the Reichstag was set ablaze.

If $P and her frothy minions are anything, they are opportunivores.

That iconic poster is brilliant! It brought back many happy memories being part of the cult of Rocky Horror viewers!

Sarah's movie, and this pathetic attempt at marketing it to young people is clearly a symptom of someone's sick, pathetic, desperate world.

What I find truly telling, is that none of her faithful bots, not one, has come to her defense. Guess they're busy doing what they're told, contacting all their email buddies and advertising how truly stupid they are to people who think they know them.

Good Luck with that Sarah! Your "propaganda ego stroker" can't hold the attention span of an amoeba, let alone the feeblest minds among us.

And the ONLY real Mrs Cunningham is from "Happy Days", not that palin wannabe on you tube.

'persecuted for her values' -- WTF? That's ridiculous, unless of course her 'values' are hypocrisy, stupidity, greed, and fame-whoring.
