My friend Dennis Zaki has recently moved back out to Wasilla and happened to peek out of his window.
This is what he saw.
I am still plugging away at my huge post scheduled for tomorrow. This thing is eating up my entire day, so I hope it meets all of your expectations.
Gorgeous photos. Except for knowing that the lake is dead, if that's L.Lucille on the top photo. The gorgeousness makes the deadness all the sadder.
ReplyDeleteGo G-Man! We are so eager to hear your news.
Beautiful pics! Thanks for all you do.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the post, Gryphen, and thank you for the beautiful photos. We've had a wondrously beautiful weekend in northern Michigan. It's nice to put aside the ugly side of politics and revel in nature's beauty sometimes.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. As annoying and harmful as Palin is, the one good thing she has done is highlighted the beauty of Alaska.
ReplyDeleteTruly a breathtaking place. Thanks for sharing these pics.
Breathtaking! I have to come back next year. Not to Wasilla, though.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone wishes to contact the World Knowledge Forum to let them know that Palin doesn't represent America here's the info:

Palin is listed as a US politician which is a laugh.
Abit off topic...seems a good place to have abit of open thread. Maybe just me.
ReplyDeleteChaz Bono says he is in getting in GREAT shape and losing alot of weight from being in DWTS.
Chaz Bono. Losing weight. DWTS.
Congrats, Chaz.
Ummm..anyone?
Thanks Gryph, for sharing these beautiful photos from Dennis Zaki. Love them ♥ ♥ ♥
ReplyDeleteForgot to add: Pictures and descriptions of Alaska make my heart ache, just abit.
ReplyDeleteI live on the flat. Alaskans are blessed w/this beauty.
How can such ugliness (I'm looking at you, Sarah) come from such a beautiful place?
ReplyDeleteSorry, this has nothing to do with beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteBut found this interesting tidbit in today's Ear.
From ADN.com Alaska Ear column.
ON THE MOVE . . . Earwigs report Channel 11's Andrea Gusty has accepted a job as Sen. Lisa Murkowski's rural Alaska liaison. She'll be stationed in Anchorage.
nature is gorgeous in the nude.
ReplyDeleteAll most us see is her clouded in smog and exhaust fumes.
Grey Lensman: Re losing weight on DWTS: Probably easier to do when you're not pregnant. Ya think?
ReplyDeleteStunning! And AK is much, much bigger and mightier than any warped, eyeglassed, badly-wigged creature from Wasilla. I hope to drive to your beautiful state someday--what an adventure that would be!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the post. Beautiful photos. I have to say, before Sarah Palin came on the national scene, I never considered travel to Alaska. Now I'd love to go there and see what's obviously a gorgeous state.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does it mean about Lake Lucille being "dead"? Are there no plants, fish, or other animals in it? And how does a lake "die"?
ReplyDeleteCan you swim or boat in a "dead" lake? Sorry I'm so stupid on the subject.
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing them. I live on a small lake in Anchorage and it is surrounded in gold! So, so pretty.
ReplyDeletei want to go to alaska!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics. I live in the Midwest and the trees are blazing with color right now. So beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read your post tomorrow, Gryphen.
Gryph,
ReplyDeleteThank You soooo much for all you do !!
Just lovely.
ReplyDelete1:00 p.m. Thank you for the contact information and inspiration to write to the host organization.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping I do not get a call from the powers that be for having followed your advice to contact the organization that is hosting Sarah Palin as a speaker. However, the following is the text of an email I just sent.
I hope it fits your expectations regarding the need to communicate how we think about Sarah and why is not deserving of representing our country.
Gryphen, if you pardon its length, here goes:
"Please know that Sarah Palin is a discredited former half-term Governor of a small population state who has bilked thousands of people out of money to line her own pockets by teasing them that she would run for President. She spreads hate wherever she goes and repeats the same old tired and false messages for whatever large fee she can squeeze out of trusting organizations.
"I would have hoped you could have invited someone more knowledgeable, more aware and compassionate than Sarah Heath Palin. I suspect she will only read the same old speeches in the same screechy voice she has always used to spread her philosophy of mistrust and hate.
"She is a divisive public character, relegated to a mere celebrity. She is no longer a politician and does not represent the vast majority of Americans. In fact, her popularity numbers have dropped like a large lead weight in a small pond.
"I hope that no one takes her or her message seriously. She is ignorant regarding how the government of the United States works and clearly confused about its history. She is disrespectful of anyone who does not agree with her (which is the majority of Americans).
"Sarah Palin is a poor choice to represent the United States of America. May you forgive us as a country that she has seen fit to make herself a celebrity figure purporting to represent us. Most of us are very ashamed of who she is and what she represents.
"Just thought you and organization should know that she is not widely supported here in the States, and we hope you listen to her as mere entertainment because she can offer nothing of value or substance - just empty platitudes and misrepresentations clothed in hateful speech.
"We have so many real politicians who are well-qualified to speak of both American and global issues with a clear head and a well-meaning heart. We have people who have dedicated their lives to the improvement in the quality of life for people and the planet, but sadly, Sarah Health Palin is not amongst their number. She has dedicated her life to her own glorification, to her own private agenda. She is neither capable nor worthy of representing our country, in my opinion and in the opinion of those who have followed her escapades over the past three years."
Sincerely,
[my name], an American who thinks you deserve better speakers than Sarah Palin
Thanks for the gorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteIt looks more like Wasilla Lake from Newcombe Park. It is not Lake Lucille. In the background are Matanuska Peak and Twin Peaks.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. Welcome back, DZ! Come on over to Neklason Lake and take ics of the swans before they leave.
I live in Palmer, 13 miles from Wasilla. From my door, I can see beautiful mountains, alpinglow, forests, neighborhoods (without avoiding what's on ground level), etc. From Wasilla, one must look UP (above ground level) to see beauty as the city itself is the armpit along the Parks Highway.
ReplyDeletejust beautiful and yes, very sad.

ReplyDeletea dead lake means it's so polluted it can not support life - no fish, no plants
NY has a dead lake, Brooktrout Lake, that has come back to life. It was killed by acid rain and pollution. When the Clean Air Act amendments were passed in 1990, the pollution from the mid-west coal fired power plants was cut way down. As a result, the PH levels started to rise.
Scientists recently restocked the lake with 20 adult trout and 2000 infants. They survived.
Currently Brooktrout Lake is home to both trout and bass and fishing is allowed once more.
Anon 1:51. That was truly inspired. I don't think anyone could have said it better. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOkay, we'll play "open thread".
ReplyDeleteGryphen has had a run on deleting comments for no clear reason. Mine said something about Sarah needing to find another McCain to tap her for Vice President.
So, that must be an upcoming topic.
In the meantime, someone who is still allowed to post on Shailey Tripp's blog should get over there (or email her) that she should get her stuff together STAT, because there ain't no one going to pay for Sarah stuff in another few days. No matter how juicy and well-documented. She's missing her moment.
WoW 1:51 pm. What a superb description of who Sarah Palin is and who she is not. I hope the World Knowledge people pay some attention. Where they ever got the idea of inviting her is way beyond me!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures - Thank you Dennisfor sharing!
ReplyDeleteAnon 1:51, I just followed your example and sent a letter as well. I can tell you though, it doesn't come close to the perfection of yours.
ReplyDeleteThe mountain looks like it's on fire.
ReplyDeleteBreathing in the beauty.
Thanks
1:51 I sent a message too, but found yours better.
ReplyDeleteI talked about her time in Alaska, on the campaign trail (quoting untrue things), the fact she did not know her American history or Alaska history for that matter and the fact she didn't know about North and South Korea when asked about it on the campaign trail.
Also, suggested that she would not be representing Americans in providing her speech.
I, signed my name, city, state and zip code.
Just popping my head up from my Death Flu convalescence to make a quick comment--I think that is actually W lake.
ReplyDeleteEither way...stunning. We are SO blessed to be surrounded by such breathtaking beauty.
Damn you Sarah for the poisonous film you have cast over this state.
-MeAgain
Wow! How could someone who truly loved this gorgeous state ever leave it?
ReplyDeleteLovely photos G. thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteGreat weather here in New Jersey - enjoying the squirrels and birds in my back yard
Did you catch Sat. Night Live - they were spot on with the bit on Cristie LOL (but dreading 2016 when we think he will run - I get a huge headache just thinking about it - that man is one huge bully to the core - he is destorying NJ more and more each day. I truly have no clue how any one can think he would make a good president)
It is very beautiful there. I've been to Alaska twice. My first time was in 1991. I recall beinfg absolutely mesmerized by how the stars actually did "twinkle" there it was so clear out. i lived all my life near major citiesy so had never experienced that phenomenon.
ReplyDeleteI also went on a sled dog ride in Wasilla! Never thought I would be so familiar with that name again lol!!
Love the timing Gryphen. Since you advised that your post is due out tomorrow, have been trying to think when tomorrow would be 'BEST' for Sarah. After all, we should always consider her needs above all else. We wouldn't want her to be distracted, out of sorts or haggard looking on the podium. She is misrepresenting the US of A after all.
ReplyDeleteSo, be kind. NOT!!!!!!!!
Gorgeous. Is that from one of the Wasilla lakes? Finger? Cottonwood? So beautiful.

Can you swim or boat in a "dead" lake? Sorry I'm so stupid on the subject.

---------------
Below are some links with information on Lake Lucille. It's not "dead" per se but somewhat anoxic (low in dissolved oxygen) due to overgrowth of vegetation.
As you can see from the Fish and Game website, the lake does support aquatic life, but due to its shallow nature, during a cold winter it can freeze solid and wipe out everything.
http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=fishingSport.lakeDetail&LakeID=145
http://www.adn.com/2009/02/03/677994/mayor-eyes-lake-lucille-in-wasilla.html
As you can see, it is not a "polluted" lake but a lake that has a shortage of dissolved oxygen and can't support a great deal of life.
Swimming, boating and other activities are perfectly safe. We take our dogs swimming and kayaking in the lake all the time.
Hope this helps explain it.
Wow!! I don't know if I will ever visit AK so thank you for those photos!!
ReplyDeleteI am confident that the only reason Sarah Palin has been invited to the World Knowledge Forum is to provide comic relief. Especially since she was probably assumed to be a Presidential contender at the time she was scheduled. They already know everything they need to know about her.

ReplyDeletePalin pulls a palin..
Here's a start on info about Lake Lucille being a "dead" lake.
ReplyDeleteAlso this re the dead lake, Lake Lucille.
ReplyDeleteThank you...a sight for sore eyes. Truly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteRe. 'Dead lake': https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Lake_Lucille
ReplyDeleteblhecker but can you see Russia from your door??
ReplyDeleteLetter writers should emphasize none of Sarah's college aged children are in college and do not aspire to be. Mention Sarah's disdain for education and platform to strip funding from education. Mention her lack of higher education and no evidence of a degree.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't hurt to let them know Sarah hates Asians! The Koreans and all Asians revere education and do everything they can to educate their young - and I'm sure they'd appreciate knowing that Sarah Palin hates them slant-eyes, too!
I think it's too late to send a letter though - she must already be on the plane, chugging vodka, sexting Shawn Christie furiously, and of course, leaking like crazy.
And, most importantly - wow! Dennis Zaki is a very fine photographer. Alaska is beautiful.
Zaki is an extraordinary photographer with a majestic subject. Thanks for the beautiful photos and good luck working on the post.
ReplyDeleteThat is nice but take some pictures of the town of Wasilla if you want to see ugly.
ReplyDelete@Me Again,
ReplyDeleteso sorry to here about your flu, they are really bad, hope your feeling better.
Will you be commenting here now?
My dumbassed FF lost my bookmarks and I don't want to miss your comments.
Get well soon.
Thanks Gryphen for the time to keep the truth fires burning. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteAnother great sight right now is the planet Jupiter, high and very bright in the Eastern sky (at least here in NY, not sure about Alaska, with the curvature of the Earth and all).
ReplyDeleteJupiter rises earlier each night through the end of the year, with its best showing in late October and early November, when it rises around nightfall and remains in view all night.
The planet outshines everything in the night sky except the Moon and Venus, so you won't have any trouble finding it.
The gas giant will be at its closest point to Earth since 1951.
Alaska is truly breathtakingly beautiful. Word of warning to those considering visiting during the summer: be prepared for mosquitos the size of tylenol capsules. They are attracted by CO2, so they zero in on you. I don't remember any by the ocean shore, especially if there's a breeze. I also don't remember any in Southeast AK (Juneau area). When I visited Juneau in July, the 5-day forecast on The Weather Channel was 5 ways to say "rain," hi 52, low 51.
ReplyDeleteSince there's so few roads connecting cities, Alaska's public transportation is the Alaska Marine ferry service. Wonderful experience, great service (from state workers). You don't need a state room, you can take a sleeping bag to the top deck and sleep on lounge chairs there (protected from the wind and with ceiling heaters, if I recall correctly). Showers are available on the ferries. It's affordable and by planning your trip, you can enjoy Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau *after* the cruise ships leave. It's amazing that these ships disgorge thousands of people into a sliver of land that have a similar size permanent population. Also, the Juneau public library is wonderful (I think it's 4 stories, which puts you eye-to-eye with docked cruise ships).
OT. Joe McGinniss has published a story in USA Today justifying his use of unnamed sources:
"Indeed, "Anonymous source tracker" publishes daily updates of news media use of unnamed sources. Since Feb. 10, 2010, the site has found 7,180 examples in The Wall Street Journal; 5,766 in Reuters; 4,854 in Bloomberg; 4,826 in BusinessWeek; 2,525 in The New York Times and 2,170 in TheWashington Post. (USA TODAY was well down the list, with only 232 uses cited.)"

They're stunning!
ReplyDeleteI hope to one day visit Alaska again. My parents took us there for two weeks when we were teens (the fifties), I learned so much about the variety of people and their rich cultures- and My husband and I went on a cruise (highly don't recommend it, they only show you what they want or can) in the late '70s. Whomever said the stars actually twinkle was right, but seeing the aurroa boreallis (sp?) in person, is truly an amazing and spiritual experience.
What a shame that a stunningly beutiful sate will forever be linked to a stunningly ignorant and ugly family of grifters.
I sent a letter as well. Made sure to highlight her xenophobia, her aversion to higher learning and education in general, and her lack of curiosity or compassion for her fellow human beings.
I don't mean this as racist in any way, but most asian cultures value family life, cultural heritage, respect for ancenstry and history, education, hard work, dedication, hard work and humanitarian issues.
I also pointed out she wanted to stand by our allies in North Korea, pointing out it was a gaffe, but showed her laziness and disregard for facts or getting them right.
~MeAgain . . .
ReplyDeleteHere's to a speedy recovery ~ and fret not, slithering sarah is not getting away with all those evil deeds, and will have answer for the blight she has brought on the State of AK,(and the world, for that matter). Trust.
Be well.
:")
Absolutely breath taking pictures...thank you.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
