Courtesy of CS Monitor:
The chancellor of a US university who has faced widespread criticism following the pepper spraying of peaceful demonstrators has told an assembly of 1,000 students that she had instructed campus police not to use force in breaking up the protest.
"I explicitly directed the chief of police that violence should be avoided at all costs," she said. "It was the absolute last thing I ever wanted to happen."
She stressed that students have a right to demonstrate peacefully.
"Because encampments have long been prohibited by UC policy, I directed police only to take down the tents," she said. "My instructions were for no arrests and no police force."
This is a NEW explanation coming from the Chancellor, who certainly did not mention a break down in communication between herself and the police earlier. Bringing it up after all of this time certainly does nothing for her credibility.
So are the students buying it?
Doesn't look that way.
Yet not all students who attended the town hall in a performing arts complex were satisfied with the response from Katehi.
Puneet Kamal, 22, an environmental science and policy major, was among those lined up to ask questions Tuesday.
"She didn't say 'I'm sorry that I did this, or I'm sorry I made this call,'" Kamal said. "She said 'I'm sorry that this situation had to happen.' Where's the blame going to?"
Natalie Poulton, 20, a communications major, said Katehi has not fully explained what she knew in advance about the police plans for clearing out protesters.
"I want more answers," said Poulton. "She totally didn't explain if there was a miscommunication with the cops and what exactly happened in terms of the higher-ups."
In a further effort at damage control the university itself has offered to pay for the medical expenses of the students sprayed by police, AND launch an independent investigation:
University of California officials said Tuesday they will pay the medical expenses of students who were pepper sprayed during an Occupy Davis protest last week.
Authorities have also decided to drop charges against 10 people who were arrested during the Friday protest on the campus of UC Davis. The university system has also created an advisory panel to look into the incident, University of California President Mark Yudof said.
Bill Bratton, who has led police departments in Los Angeles, Boston and New York, will head the panel, Yudof said.
"My intent," Yudof said, "is to provide the chancellor and the entire University of California community with an independent, unvarnished report about what happened at Davis."
In my personal opinion the Chancellor has lost all credibility and until she is removed from her job, or resigns willingly, there will be no opportunity to the university to start earning back the student's trust, and to allow the healing process to begin.
I will predict right now that Chancellor Katehi will be out of a job before the Christmas break.
Being mistreated by "authorities" while protesting should not end up being the end to the means.
ReplyDeleteThat is what is happening now; the mistreatment of the protesters is becoming the "news" rather than the message that the protesters are trying to give to the populace.
I know more than a few people at work that don't understand what the OWS is about, they only know that "liberals" are being hassled by police.
Perhaps everyone protesting needs to step back and let things cool down before even more police violence becomes the news.
There is a better way to get the message out to the masses, and no one has to get hurt.
Slap a blond wig on this lady and she sounds and LOOKS like Orly Taitz. And what's with the outdated lip lines (tattoed on lip WGE)????
ReplyDeleteBut it's such a cushy job! And great bennies! What?!!! It's the police's fault! I was so good, I didn't knowahhhh!
ReplyDeleteEvil folds on itself and starts the blaming. It was just as much Kathe's fault as it was the now infamous meme'd police officers.
no pardon for this turkey of an excuse for leadership
ReplyDeleteChancellor Katehi did the bidding of her 1%
she can go now
UCD alum here.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking you're right, Gryph. I also think she's done as a university administrator.
Hopefully the university can see a way to avoid giving her the golden parachute, as well.

ReplyDeleteJames Murdoch out at NewsCorp
James Murdoch has left the boards of operating companies overseeing News Corp.'s U.K. newspapers the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times, according to British regulatory filings, which registered the changes in September.
Mr. Murdoch, News Corp.'s deputy chief operating officer, resigned from the boards of a number of subsidiary companies of News International, the media conglomerate's U.K. newspaper unit. But he remains the News International chairman and a director of the holding company for the Times and the Sunday Times.

So what do you expect from college chancellors who are only paid the paltry sum of a half mil+ and perks per year??
ReplyDeleteYou want caring and compassionate, you better bring out the long money.
You know Gingrich and Palin money.
BTW, can we all remember for a very long time that the campus police are on PAID leave !!!! They're lucky they didn't get the time-out corner too.
ReplyDeleteAs bad as the pepper spraying thing was, I think the Chancellor is trying to do the right thing now -- calling for an investigation, paying the medical bills, etc -- even if she *is* doing it to cover her a**.
ReplyDeleteIt's more than the mayor of Oakland or any of those others are doing. Give her credit for that.
I hope she is out of a job very soon. She's lied about everything all the way so far. The students have displayed a far greater level of maturity than she has.
ReplyDeleteI also sincerely hope that the policemen involved in the spraying incident are fired as well. The Chancellor clearly states that they ignored direct orders. That's grounds for firing right there.
I hope all of the students involved sue the school for creating an unsafe environment and police brutality.

ReplyDeleteJust wanted to post this to help remind people of the things that President Obama has accomplished in the past 3 years. Of 500 promise, over 300 kept or in the works, some stalled and only 53 "broken". Something to think about...

Expect a full white wash with Bill Bratton in charge of the investigation. His boys beat up a KTLA news crew in 2007 along with others and while the underlings were "disciplined" Bratton came out "clean". He had been Chief for 5 years and was responsible for the training and tactics, yet he walked.
ReplyDeleteHe's now a high pay contractor for DHS and head of Kroll. He's a snake.
Gryphen could you please repost the funniest political video of all time of Sarah Palin being interviewd while the turkey's are being slaughtered in the back ground
ReplyDeleteAny board members who backed the Chancellor or perhaps even went over her head or behind her back to encourage the police action should also lose their positions.
ReplyDeleteRemember, even though she is Chancellor, she is also an employee. Go the power behind her as well to ensure that those who support police actions are not able to stay in the shadows.
None of us know if she acted alone. She will in all likelihood lose her job and I agree with that, but we need to know if anyone behind her influenced, directed or went over/around her.
It seems very strange that it has taken her this long to come out with a statement.
For those who know about the baton beatings in Berkeley a week or two ago, know that Berkeley's Chancellor just issued a similar statement of apology and promises amends.
Then, we have the Mayor of Oakland to consider. Also, too, Mayor Bloomberg, that billionaire one-percenter who issued the order for a nighttime raid to destroy tents and personal property.
Also, consider that Bloomberg was in on a conference call with the Mayors of Oakland, Seattle, Portland and others the day before his big raid and the raid in Oakland.
Making this one woman the figurehead for abuse of power is short-sighted. It is also taking the pressure off the bigger fish in this putrid sea. Let's keep our eyes open and look for the most powerful, not just the "pusher." Look for the dealers of this policy.
Gryphen, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful daughter.
ReplyDeleteSorry, lady, it's too little, too late. Unless you agree to sit down, submit to the police, and get your face pepper sprayed at point blank range three or four times in a row.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can pay their medical bills, but you can't take back their pain, deprivation of their rights, and public humiliation.
A full investigation from an impartial third party would be fair, not this whitewashed bullshit.
The Chancellor needs to lose her job along with the cops and their chief.
Gryphen, I want to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, and that goes to the family of commenters on your blog as well.
ReplyDeleteIf you happen to hear from Mercede and Sherry, please tell them Happy Thanksgiving from me as well.

Yes let's give her credit because she will undo the pepper spray damage.
Let's give a wife beater credit for apologizing and sending her flowers. After all he didn't kill her.
