Mitt Romney shrugs off questions about cruel and inhumane treatment of his dog Seamus during a 12 hour family trip in 1983.

That is one of the most disingenuous laughs I have ever heard. And horribly inappropriate in this context.

So Romney is now claiming that the dog carrier was "completely airtight?" How in the hell does a dog breathe in an "airtight" kennel?

And he left the poor animal in there for twelve hours?

I also call bullshit on the idea that the dog climbed up onto the roof of the car in order to get into the kennel on his own. How would he even manage that?

I could not help notice that Romney seemed relatively unconcerned that he had also broken the law by doing this. You know regular human laws are for the little people, and do not pertain to Romney.

By the way I also learned that Romney's story may in fact be MUCH worse than previously thought.

Check this out.

The original story claimed that Mitt Romney strapped his dog to the roof of the car in a crate and drove the family 12-hours to Canada. Along the way, the poor, scared dog (Seamus) had a bad case of diarrhea (some say in fear) that ran down the side of the car. Romney stopped the car at a gas station, the story went, and hosed down the poor beast and car before getting back on the road.

But is that what REALLY happened?

In today's article, Swidey reveals that in the first version of the story he'd heard from a Romney "family friend," Mitt Romney did not hose down the dog but instead "drove the station wagon right through a car wash" with poor Seamus strapped atop!

Knowing he had a remarkable story in his hands, Swidey says, he worked diligently to ensure he had every detail correct. He spoke to Tagg Romney, one of the Romney children who was in the car at the time. "Far from being tone-deaf, Tagg realized as I dug deeper that the story could cause his father grief," Swidey wrote.

And the story changed.

Is it really possible that he drove his dog though a car wash? An animal that he claims was "a good friend of the family?"

Just when you thought Mitt Romney could not appear less compassionate.

I would not let this guy water my houseplants, much less run my country.

So, now the carrier was supposedly air tight? What did he put Seamus in - a space capsule? Of course that is bullshit. This is wrong on so many levels. A dog should never be crated for 12 hours. A dog should not be stuck on top of the car roof. For craps sake, Seamus is a living, breathing, feeling, creature. One of "gods" creatures. He isn't a piece of luggage. Squirting Seamus off while still crated on the roof was horrible enough. Sending him through a car wash is animal abuse. Can you imagine how terrified that poor dog was? I judge people on how they care for innocent creatures. Mitt gets an F- . No way would I want him as president...or anything else for that matter.

Something about Mitt Romney makes me cringe. And the dog story is, I fear, the tip of the iceberg. He seems to have no capacity for empathy whatsoever.

Remember that his service for his religion in Paris was the same as someone's military service in VietNam at the same time - the late 1960's. And his sons working for his political campaign in 2008 was the equivalent of young men and women fighting in Iraq.

What is it about Republicans and their sense of victimhood? It's all about them and never about everyone or anyone else.

Here he is claiming PETA was not happy with him because his dog likes fresh air. He must have been very unhappy in an "air tight" container then.

  8. so....he's blaming the dog??? mittens - your dog trusted you to take care of him. that's what dogs do - trust their humans to know how to properly take care of them. while dog's are smart they do not understand highways, speed limits, etc. that's your job, mitt.

so many other things also too:

he didn't know it was illegal? ignorance of the law is no excuse mittens.

he thinks the dog would have preferred to ride atop the car than in the car with five kids? he really knows nothing about dogs, does he?

laughing about it? let's strap him in on top of a car and drive the highways for a few hours - see how he likes it.

i have never really liked the magic underwear ken doll, but the more he speaks the lower in my esteem he goes.

This really can't come as a surprise to people.

There are many stories about Romney's lack of empathy. He slid adoption information across the table to a Mormon woman because she was a divorcee who was pregnant—unasked. She was appalled.

    http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/02/mitt-romney-201202

Romney is more than awkward, he acts like a sociopath. He cannot connect truly with people. It seems he will say anything (all the flip-flopping) and do anything to get what he wants. These traits would actually make him extremely good at his job as a corporate raider.

His eyes are on his prize. So it seems the prize that day with Seamus was to get to Canada in twelve hours and nothing was going to get in his way.

We could all be Seamus in a Romney world.

Irish Setters are high strung dogs, no wonder this boy what shittin' his kennel. Also dogs that are crate trained do not "Go" in their kennels, just to show how terrified that Boy was....
And at the end does he say, "he was a GOOD FRIEND of the family, we love our PETS".?

Let me expand on your suggestion:

Let's strap him on the top of a car and drive the highways for a few hours in an AIR TIGHT KENNEL and see how he likes it.

You could say we wouldn't have to drive being it's in an AIR TIGHT KENNEL but I'd want to drive in that it would also cause all the bumps and potholes to be experienced along with the lack of air. He needs the full experience.

An Irish Setter is a big dog and the car was a station wagon. With the tailgate down and the rear window down a dog the size and agility of a setter "could" conceivably jump onto the roof.

I still call bullshit the dog went willingly by himself. Add the cruelty of forcing a dog to ride on the roof, Willard is not fit to be the leader of our country, I'm thinking that he is a sociopath and should be locked up..

For all the Thugs that spew their hate about all the Kennedy family that have held positions in politics -- why are people not discussing the issue that Romeny's father campaigned to become President and now it's his son. We've already had the experience of Bush 41 and 43 and that didn't work out well.

Romeny's father may have lost, but I don't see this as being much different. The Thugs complain about Monarchies being passed down in families -- this is no different.

Romney thinks it's OK to do that to a dog and to tell people he did that to dog. Romney does not comprehend his own evilness. It is very likely that Romney has abused animals in far worse ways. And it is possible he has abused people also.

The media is giving Romney a pass on the animal abuse story. Why? Well, Romney is the last clown in the GOP clown car, so the the media has to protect their asset. Romney is the only hope the media has for something like a contest in the 2012 election. Hyping Romney is just simply the media's only hope at making a profit off the election.

Here is a picture of a dog carrier, but there is an open grill to allow the animal to breathe. http://www.petworldshop.com/pictures/air-travel-pet-carrier.jpg

If it really was an airtight container, then please tell me how the brown liquid poop came streaming down the back window. Airtight means that it would have puddled on the floor of the crate, and by the time that Romney would have stopped, the dog would be gasping for breath. For that matter, how many times have there been warnings about leaving a dog in a locked car? The heat would have built up in that airtight container faster than it would take to heat up a car.

Oh, so maybe there was a breathing hole? Then is wouldn't be airtight. The other thing that bothers me is the physics of the thing. If you look at any of the carriers put on top of a car, they have to be streamlined to prevent strong resistance from the wind. Romney claimed in his interview that there was a makeshift windshield attached to the front of the crate. If the crate was airtight, it wouldn't need a shield. I think that he invented the shield part of the story when the story was originally told to the Boston Globe in 2008.

Maybe he thought Sea-mus came from the sea, or liked water or car washes.

Nevertheless, it's harsh to even drive an animal on top of a car in the wind for 12 hours. That poor thing wouldn't be able to hear and would have a terrible headache, nausea, and plain trauma. What I really don't understand is his wife and kids allowing the dog to suffer as well.

I posted the link to the updated car wash version. I have read both of the stories by the reporter that first told the story.

I think cheap and logical Mitt cleaned the car at a do it yourself carwash with the hand held high pressure spray wand.

    First report back in 2007:

As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!'' A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.
As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.

    http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2008/specials/romney/articles/part4_main/?page=full

Swidey's recent report on how he got the story:

For the record, neither Tagg nor any other Romney was my original source for the anecdote. Collins and others have pushed this silly line to suggest how tone-deaf the Romney brood must be. In fact, I went to the then 37-year-old Tagg only after having heard the Seamus story at the very end of a long interview with a close friend of the Romney family. Seeking to penetrate the stock image of the air-brushed family, I had asked that friend what stories the Romneys reminisced about in the privacy of their own home. As soon as the Seamus road trip anecdote passed his lips, I knew it was a gem. But I was determined to avoid a situation where Romney’s handlers could call into question the anecdote — or the entire article — because I had gotten some small detail wrong. So I insisted that Tagg poll his mother and brothers and persisted until I had confirmed every last fact. Far from being tone-deaf, Tagg realized as I dug deeper that the story could cause his father grief.

Tagg: 'Dad- some reporter knows about the dog on the car story!'

Mitt: ' I bet he thought that was hilarious! (Same laugh as the Mike Wallace clip) Everyone wishes they were as smart as I am! Dog on car = GENIUS! And everyone hates PETA.'

Tagg: 'I'm not so sure this story makes you look good...'

Yet Tagg’s participation actually helped his dad. After all, the first version of the story I’d heard from the family friend — who hadn’t been an eyewitness — improbably had Mitt driving the station wagon right through a carwash. Imagine the howls from PETA if Seamus had been introduced to the world with the image of high-pressure wraparound brushes pummeling a defenseless, diarrheal dog.

    http://articles.boston.com/2012-01-08/news/30605151_1_romney-family-mitt-romney-dog/2

When kids witness something like this they usually remember major details correctly. When the story gets retold to family friends it probably is factually correct.

Mitt could have driven through a car wash with rotating brushes. That would have been a disaster. But in 1983 how many of these were unattended? That's not probable even for Mitt. You know he had ridden through the big rotating brush carwashes when he was a kid.

n 1983 how many service stations had garden hoses for people to use to wash dog shit off their car? You would have had to explain yourself and get permission. That's why I think it was a DIY unattended car wash. Where no one would have seen Mitt's mistake except his family.

So the dog's diarrhea dripping down the windows gave him or his children no clue?

If Seamus was hosed down at the 4-hr point, think of the effect of 65 mph winds chilling him. If indeed the crate was not entirely air tight.

I am glad that no one is giving Mitt a pass on this story - cruelty and abuse to animals certainly is relevant to what kind of man he really is.

The Romney's had the money to pay for more humane transport for their dog - or could have hired someone to provide that care at home.

When I went to stay with my sister in Houston, TX due to illness - I took my two little dogs with me. Being poor, I couldn't afford to pay for the airfare for me and both of them (I didn't want them to go in the cargo hold, too many horror stories about that).

I coordinated the whole thing so that one little dog went with another sister going to Minnesota by car (in the car) to visit her daughter. I took the other one on the plane with me. The Texas sister was in Iowa visiting family - and from there went to Iowa to get my dog ,to bring him back to TX with her.

On the trip back I did have to pay for two plane tickets so I could have them on the plane with me - not in cargo. If you are a pet owner who loves and respects your animal companions, you do what it takes to make sure they are cared for as members of the family.

When people as wealthy as the Romney's choose to put a member of their family in a cage on top of their car and drive 70+ mph for 12 hours in order to save a few bucks - is there really any doubt as to their lack of compassion and humanity?

That whole family should be ashamed - think of all the other family dogs who were probably also treated this way. This issue is not about political parties - it's about character. If it was reported that my favorite Democrat candidate mistreated their pets in any way - that would be enough to lose my vote.

I really don't believe the carwash story. For one thing, the carwash operators wouldn't allow it. For another, if Mittens *did* manage to escape their notice and ran the car through there with the caged dog inside, the brushes that come down and pummel the car would have gotten tangled or stuck on the cage, conceivably dragging it around on the top of the car or maybe even stalling the machines.

Mittens is an idiot, but not that big of a one, in my opinion.

Also, the phrase "emotion-free crisis management" is pretty hilarious: no crisis management here, only a v superficial pass at the symptoms of a v bad situation, a self-made bad situation, without exhibiting a clue re recognizing the situation's true issues. This is like hosing down a cancer victim who has diarrhea, with no awareness that there's more to it, not even after the fact and much discussion about it.

Lack of awareness, poor judgment, bad treatment, denial, laughing at those who see it differently. No wonder this sad story has legs: sounds just like his Bain behavior and laughing about liking firing people.

What's wrong with this picture: steady barrages of negative ads slam the candidates and reveal their faults, lies, lack of ethics, etc. --- then when it's all said and done, the people are expected to flock to the polls to support one of these guys??

Do candidates think all the nastiness revealed in their messages just disappears from people's memories - and that all of a sudden they should trust and respect a certain candidate?

And why does the timeline only go back 3 year's and focus on Obama's record, without a mention by anyone (candidates and media) of the chaos caused by the Bush administration during the previous 8 years??

Do you even know what parts of Sharia law these nimrods think are going to get enacted? You claim 70% of the voters (or was that just your basic bigoted legislature) wanted it banned. Does that mean that if 70% of the population of a state want to make slavery legal, or make women second class citizens or make being a Homosexual is punishable by death then when a judge says NO you have the same right to claim this judge is a liberal asshole? Go get some sense or quit hitting the bottle so early.

If the Romney camp can't even spin a simple case of animal abuse, they will explode when their candidate really gets full of himself with a big delegate count. Romney's ego and mental problems are a fatal combination. Democratic Party operatives just have to sit around and watch the blunders and counter-blunders start to stack up.

I like the scenario where the GOP is stuck with Romney because he got enough delegates in the primaries. Once the GOP can't ditch the guy, the Romney trail of horrors will unfold.

And, just think, a lot of GOP wannabees are quivering in their boots today. One of the poor slobs is going to have to be Romney's running mate. Some hapless governor or congressperson will be required to "support" the Romney ticket. People are probably writing their "thanks but no thanks" blurbs right now. But they know one of them is doomed to fawn over disgusting, despicable, arrogant Romney for the whole campaign. lol.

No he has not, Gasman. He is following the "lying for the Lord" aspect of his religion. One of the main aims of the Mormon church is world domination. How much closer would they be if the leader of the free world was in their pocket? He can call on the zombified millions of Mormons to donate to his campaign, they can muster millions to go door to door for his cause (they have LOTS of practice being missionaries) and they will do or say or vote fpr anything they are told to.
Everything he has ever done or said, from flip flop to flip flop, has been Okee Dokeeyed by his church, even the lies he tells. If can get him ahead and them the power, it is fine and dandy.

    ------------

My first thought when I read the story a while back was that cruelty to animals is one of the first steps on the avenue to being a serial killer.

It disgusts me too that not only Romney laughs in his 'fake laugh' in the Fox video, but also the fact that his sons laugh about it, as was when they were asked about it when being interviewed.

Doesn't say much for the whole family. That of a family they are putting on display as a fine, upstanding family. BULLSHIT. The wife was in the car, the kids laugh at cruely to animals -- laugh at the cruelty to their family pet.

Mitt is cold-hearted and cruel. He was born into wealth, and NEVER had to struggle or can relate to what many middle class and poor Americans go through in their daily lives. Americans work hard, and they don't seem to make it because of all the inequality out there. This has got to finally stop, and ALL Americans need to be able to get out there and have the same opportunities to make it and provide for their families that the very wealthiest have had all along.

Mitt's totally all about MONEY and doesn't care about anything else. He has no compassion for the American people - he doesn't even have compassion for a helpless dog! He is NOT what we want as POTUS to represent ALL the American people. Vote wisely, but VOTE, and make sure that people in states out there that have been trying to suppress people from voting will not be allowed to get away with this despicable tactic to crush down the American voters!

    -----

Every law school professor in Oklahoma told the OK Legislature and the people of Oklahoma not to try to adopt banning Sharia Law. When they passed it anyway with 70% approval, it would have prevented the 68 or 69 Indian Nations (that are legally recognized as "nations") from entering into contracts - all because of the way it was written and it would also have prevented oil companies from entering into contracts with countries that recognized Sharia Law. Oklahoma lives on oil money!

The entire country was laughing at Oklahoma for passing it without understanding what would happen when it passed. Oklahoma was acting out of irrational fear of Sharia Law.

Thank goodness there is a judge in Oklahoma who had sense enough to overrule the State's stupidity and protect them from themselves. Not that it matters but I'm an Okie - born and bred.

Anon 8:35 needs to do homework. The Oklahoma judge's decision does not LIFT a ban on Sharia law, it does not IMPOSE. or ALLOW Sharia law in this country - it merely overrides the people's referendum decision on the basis that it is unConstitutional as written and allows the opposing party the make a legal CHALLENGE in court.

Sharia law will therefore still need to survive such a challenge, which ain't gonna happen, nohow.

The "lying for the Lord" bullshit is just their way of justifying what they themselves deem unacceptable behavior. The Book of Mormon declares lying no better than murder and a sin worthy of death or eternal damnation:

    2 Nephi 26:32
32 And again, the Lord God hath commanded that men should not murder; that THEY SHOULD NOT LIE; that they should not steal; that they should not take the name of the Lord their God in vain; that they should not envy; that they should not have malice; that they should not contend one with another; that they should not commit whoredoms; and that they should do none of these things; for whoso doeth them shall perish.

What operator? I've never seen a car wash with an operator. They are all self-service in my part of the country. You drive your car in, put in the quarters, and hose it off yourself. There's no operator.

And to address another point, of course the car wash is tall enough to accommodate a car with a kennel on top. People wash off tractors and big trucks and all kinds of things that are much taller than a family car.

I don't care what he's doing for "college kids" either. I'm a college student and earned a full scholarship for grades. Maybe if kids tried harder in school they wouldn't need the leg-up. We were NOT created equal, some people are smarter than others (no, this isn't based on race or nation, just to take away some of your arguments) and are bound to make more money. Instead of taking from them, just accept it. You can't make everyone "equal" in class and financial status.
