"Wait, is this over that gay thing? |
A well-known, openly gay supporter of Mitt Romney in New York has decided to withdraw his support for Romney and back President Barack Obama instead.
The clincher: Romney's stance on same-sex marriage.
"I feel that I no longer wish to support your presidential campaign and ask that you please return the maximum contribution that I gave to you last year," Bill White wrote in a letter addressed to the former Massachusetts governor and obtained by CNN.
"You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history and I do not support your run for president any longer," White added.
Yes, I know the fact that he is gay might make people think this is a one off, and that it will not start a trend. However I would like to point out that in the Republican party there are a WHOLE lot of closeted gays, and even more individuals who have gay family members or who are going to have to struggle with their conscience this election cycle.
Sure this may be an easy choice for the Evangelicals and homophobes (There is a difference right?), but there are a LOT of people who are going to see people they love very excited about the President's stance, and they may find themselves torn between ideology and wanting to support the people they care about.
Hell, even Newt Gingrich and Dick Cheney have gay family members who they might want to see given the opportunity to marry the person they love.
I'm just saying.
speaking of closeted gays in the republican party what do jeff gannon, rove, drudge and rush have in common?
ReplyDeleteRicky Martin was part of an Obama fundraiser in NY last night. What should be noted is he was a big GW Bush supporter and even played at one of his inaugurations. Martin said he now supports Obama due to his stance on Foreign Policy and support for Gay rights. I imagine there are plenty more like Martin.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, some of the same gays and relatives of gays put "free enterprise" ideology over the freedom of people to marry who their hearts desire.
ReplyDeleteThese same people will fight for their own rights but unfortunately, not those of others. Cheney is an example of this, and I expect there are actual gays who think the same way.
I mean, do you really expect a revolt among "Log Cabin Republicans"? I don't.
Yep, those log cabin Repub gays will march right to the polls and vote for Romney.
DeleteWhat kind of moron couldn't figure this out ahead of time? Mittens was NEVER going to support the right of gays to marry. Ever. Why any gay or lesbian individual feels the Republican party represents their best interest is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteWhat are these people NOT seeing that is so obvious to the rest of us? (I guess, like we see through $P and some cannot.)
In the words of Chris Matthews"
ReplyDelete“I have to wonder how gay men and women who now work for the election of Republican members of Congress, Senators and Romney himself can sit in their work seats and refuse to stand up, walk in the direction of their bosses and candidates, and ask them to join the President on this,” he said.
“I have to wonder how long they can remain indentured servants, how long they can continue to accept the Republican Party’s don’t ask, don’t tell rule that you can work here as long as you keep your mouth shut.”

Gryphen, here's the script for the new Romney campaign ad I'm really psyched about. I think it demonstrates clearly that President Obama can be very forcefully - and almost truthfully - opposed without resorting to the n-word. Yes!! (Of course, that limitation isnt likely to last throughout the whole campaign, but it'll be nice if at least it starts that way...)

This year, we now face a stark choice. On one side there is President Obama and our fellow Democrats. On the other side there is Mitt Romney and his fellow Republicans, nearly all of whom are beholden to the religious right and backed by incomprehensible amounts of money. Yet, depending upon whom you ask President Obama is either some communist, socialist, radical who wants to destroy America or he is barely distinguishable from Mitt Romney and the Republicans.
ReplyDeleteThere is one candidate in this race who believes a woman has a right to control her own body. There is one candidate who does not.
There is one candidate in this race who believes people should have the right to marry the person they love, regardless of sex. There is one candidate who believes only heterosexual couples deserve this right.
There is one candidate in this race who believes the wealthy should pay more in taxes. There is one candidate who believes they should pay less.
There is one candidate who wants to protect our social safety net. There is one candidate who wants to slash the social safety net.
There is one candidate who believes health care is a right. There is one candidate who once believed that until, that is, he decided to run for president.
There is one candidate who believes in saving American jobs. There is one candidate who believes we should have let Detroit go bankrupt.
There is one candidate who believes we should go after every terrorist who targets and murder our fellow Americans. There is one candidate who believes it is not worth the time and expense to go after one man, at least until he realized Americans would not look positively upon that opinion and he decided to change it.
These are but some of the differences that distinguish the positions of President Obama and Mitt Romney. This November, we will choose which path we want our country to take. One candidate is on the correct side of the issues. The other is on the wrong side of the issues. On November 6, one of them will be elected president.
Don’t listen to those who will try and discourage you. Don’t listen to those who try and claim that President Obama and Mitt Romney are two peas in a pod and there is no real difference between them. The stakes this year are too high. Too much hangs in the balance, whether it is our fragile economic recovery or whether it is the right of women to control their own bodies. The difference is clear. President Obama has my vote, my time, my effort, my money (when I have it) and my full support.

Young Mitt is holding a GUN to his throat?
ReplyDeleteResearch: Romney's Anti-Gay Assault Fits Typical Pattern
Exposed for physical and verbal abuse of gay classmates during high school, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney trivialized the incidents as "pranks" and "dumb things," and claiming not to know the boy he assaulted was gay.
To me, his response came as no surprise. This is precisely what most gay-bashers think and say, according to my research on the motivations of perpetrators.
In the first empirical research into prevalence rates of and motivations for antigay harassment and violence by noncriminal young adults, I found antigay behaviors like Romney's to be alarmingly commonplace. One in 10 young adults in the politically liberal San Francisco Bay Area admitted to physical violence or threats against presumed homosexuals, and another 24 percent acknowledged name-calling. The percentages were even higher among young men. The frequency of self-acknowledged antigay behaviors among a general population sample was consistent with victim studies in which large proportions of lesbians and gay men report sexuality-related victimization.
Like Mitt Romney, most gay-bashers with whom I conducted followup interviews insisted that they were not motivated by hatred of homosexuals. This despite the fact that many of their assaults fell within legal definitions of a hate crime. Many, like Romney, were instead acting as self-appointed enforcers of gender norms for male and female behavior

Is Mitt Romney finally paying the cost for repeating debunked lies?
ReplyDeleteStranded in the fight of his life without a life story to tell, Mitt has had to rely on his one advantage: His ability to repeat debunked lies.

I have never read a more accurate description of Sarah (and now Bristol) in my life.
ReplyDeleteThe serial bully:
is a convincing, practised liar and when called to account, will make up anything spontaneously to fit their needs at that moment, has a Jekyll and Hyde nature - is vile, vicious and vindictive in private, but innocent and charming in front of witnesses; no-one can (or wants to) believe this individual has a vindictive nature - only the current target of the serial bully's aggression sees both sides; whilst the Jekyll side is described as "charming" and convincing enough to deceive. the Hyde side is frequently described as "evil"; Hyde is the real person, Jekyll is an act
is emotionally retarded with an arrested level of emotional development; the bully displays the emotional age of a five-year-old
is emotionally immature and emotionally untrustworthy
exhibits unusual and inappropriate attitudes to sexual matters, sexual behaviour and bodily functions; underneath the charming exterior there are often suspicions or hints of sexual dysfunction, inadequacy, perversion, violence or abuse.
holds deep prejudices (eg against the opposite gender, people of a different sexual orientation, other cultures and religious beliefs, foreigners, etc - prejudiced people are unvaryingly unimaginative) but goes to great lengths to keep this prejudicial aspect of their personality secret
is self-opinionated and displays arrogance, audacity, a superior sense of entitlement and sense of invulnerability and untouchability, is a control freak and has a compulsive need to control everyone and everything you say, do, think and believe; displays a compulsive need to criticise whilst simultaneously refusing to value, praise and acknowledge others, their achievements, or their existence shows a lack of joined-up thinking with conversation that doesn't flow and arguments that don't hold water flits from topic to topic so that you come away feeling you've never had a proper conversation
undermines and destroys anyone who the bully perceives to be an adversary, a potential threat, or who can see through the bully's mask. may pursue a vindictive vendetta against anyone who dares to hold them accountable, is also quick to belittle, undermine, denigrate and discredit anyone who calls, attempts to call, or might call the bully to account
is arrogant, haughty, high-handed, and a know-all
often has an overwhelming, unhealthy and narcissistic attention-seeking need to portray themselves as a wonderful, kind, caring and compassionate person, in contrast to their behaviour and treatment of others; the bully sees nothing wrong with their behavior and chooses to remain oblivious to the discrepancy between how they like to be seen and how they are seen by others
is spiritually dead although may loudly profess some religious belief or affiliation
is mean-spirited, officious, and often unbelievably petty, mean, stingy, greedy, selfish, a parasite and an emotional vampire. is always a taker and never a giver
is convinced of their superiority and has an overbearing belief in their qualities of leadership but cannot distinguish between leadership (maturity, decisiveness, assertiveness, co-operation, trust, integrity) and bullying (immaturity, impulsiveness, aggression, manipulation, distrust, deceitfulness)
often fraudulently claims qualifications, experience, titles, entitlements or affiliations which are ambiguous, misleading, or bogus
sometimes displays a seemingly limitless demonic energy especially when engaged in attention-seeking activities or evasion of accountability and is often a committeeaholic or apparent workaholic
Responsibility
The serial bully appears to lack insight into his or her behaviour and seems to be oblivious to the crassness and inappropriateness thereof.
SO much more here...

Hmm. Lots of parallels with sociopathy. I guess the two go hand in hand.
DeleteVERY interesting, and very well-stated. And, yes, as 7:18 stated, it is the perfect picture of a sociopath, which describes the complete nature of a bully when no one is looking.
DeleteHow unfortunately that the entire GOP now seems to be nothing more than a party of bullies – a party so far gone that non-bullies are now excluded from its ranks and expelled from its leadership. In fact, the terms GOP and pathology are now almost synonymous.
Much this description also seems to apply to Romney, though he appears to display a much higher level of sophistication in fulfilling the above descriptions than do the two women from Wasilla.
I particularly wonder about the following portion of the description in reference to Romney, since he seems to be so uncomfortable about his own sexuality:
"exhibits unusual and inappropriate attitudes to sexual matters, sexual behaviour and bodily functions; underneath the charming exterior there are often suspicions or hints of sexual dysfunction, inadequacy, perversion, violence or abuse."
After all, Romney is a bully who wears magic underwear, and who seems afraid to hug and kiss his own wife in public. What does THAT reveal about his discomfort with his own sexuality, and his desire to exert total control over others' sexuality and reproductive choices? Even the Palins have not yet taken bullying to this extreme.
One could certainly say that a bully is a person who lacks a clear conscience. People with a clear conscience act in love, gentleness, openness, and forgiveness – not in hate, resentment, division, fear, accusation, and bullying. This is biblical, but you can also see it played out in the lives of the bullies around you.
Because they despise weakness, bullies are actually the worst victims of aging. They seemingly can not handle the demise of their own bodies, the loss of their own bodily functions, the inability to control their immediate surroundings. And because they have led a life of negativity, anger, and cynicism, by the time they get old, they have often driven away all of the people who loved them. Bullies who lack the resources of money and extended family often die alone. Aging is perhaps one of the greatest forms of karma when it comes to a bully.

I love it that he included "you have chosen to be on the wrong side of history".
ReplyDeleteI see the manic attempt to push women's reproductive rights and deny LGBT human rights as a last screaming tantrum of the fundies; scratching and clawing for control over other people's lives and bodies.
So sad! They will embarrass their grandkids to no end during the annual Christmas visit to their nursing home, as they rant about how uppity women and colored people have become.
I do hope they remember who is going to choose their nursing home....

Gryphen, did you catch the segment where they are PRAYING for pain and destruction of Americans in an effort to block President Obama's reelection? They have no soul.
ReplyDeleteFox News Roots against America and Hopes for Higher Gas Prices
...With their open cheering for higher gasoline prices, Fox News has moved from anti-Obama to anti-America. There is something unpatriotic and fundamentally wrong with a news network that would hope for more pain to be inflicted on the American people because it would present a better electoral climate for the political party that they support.
Fox News is hoping for pain, misery, and hardship to befall the American people. In less than four years, Rupert’s network has gone from state run television to rooting against the economic welfare of the American people, but not even the mighty FNC propaganda machine can turn Mitt Romney into a credible presidential challenger, and no amount of bellowing flag waving can disguise Fox News’s contempt for the American people.

His neurosurgeon, Dr. Fessler,[47] expects him to have to spend a lengthy period in inpatient and outpatient stroke rehabilitation, but his cognitive functions, motor skills, and vital functions were largely unaffected by the stroke, save for the fact that his left side has a marked degree of weakness, which may improve during the healing process. Gay Marriage: Obama Says Congress ‘On Notice’ To Repeal DOMA On ‘The View’
ReplyDeletePresident Barack Obama told Barbara Walters and the ladies of “The View” that “Congress is clearly on notice” that he wants the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) repealed, in an appearance taped Monday that will air today.
“A lot of this has to do with what’s called the Defense of Marriage Act. It was passed originally when Hawaii started making noises about recognizing same sex marriage. The idea was we don’t want that drifting into the federal government and this is part of the reason why my Justice Department has said to the courts, we don’t think the Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional. This is something that historically had been determined at the state level,” the President said.

Why did he donate money to Romney in the first place?
ReplyDeleteThat's my question too!
DeleteIn interesting news last night the local "liberal" station went over the top in its bailing out on the President. They are clearly pandering to the far right and doing more and more "family" stories and making frequent side bars about prayer and God - kind of strange - regardless they announced the latest poll had Mitt three points ahead of the President and growing his lead over the last week - now how that's possible is beyond me but they claimed it was a respected national poll and attributed the huge shift against the President to his statements regarding gay marriage. Trying to drum up controversy or selling out the media money?

I have to applaud this guy for taking this stance, but I have to wonder, will he get his money back?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you're right on the "closeted gays in the GOP", how can there NOT be? What I never understood was Darth Cheyney's support of Shrub's "One Man, One Woman" policy, and not take a stand to defend his own daughter's rights? I remember him sheepishly saying it's a "personal" issue, but still - you defend Shrub's daughter's rights and deny your own flesh and blood?
Anyway, I hope more people have the courage to follow this man's lead.
