A look inside Mitt Romney's crumbling campaign.

Courtesy of Politico:

Stuart Stevens, Mitt Romney’s top strategist, knew his candidate’s convention speech needed a memorable mix of loft and grace if he was going to bound out of Tampa with an authentic chance to win the presidency. So Stevens, bypassing the speechwriting staff at the campaign’s Boston headquarters, assigned the sensitive task of drafting it to Peter Wehner, a veteran of the last three Republican White Houses and one of the party’s smarter wordsmiths.

Stevens junked the entire thing, setting off a chaotic, eight-day scramble that would produce an hour of prime-time problems for Romney, including Clint Eastwood’s meandering monologue to an empty chair.

Romney’s convention stumbles have provoked weeks of public griping and internal sniping about not only Romney but also his mercurial campaign muse, Stevens. Viewed warily by conservatives, known for his impulsiveness and described by a colleague as a “tortured artist,” Stevens has become the leading staff scapegoat for a campaign that suddenly is behind in a race that had been expected to stay neck and neck through Nov. 6.

This article is based on accounts from Romney aides, advisers and friends, most of whom refused to speak on the record because they were recounting private discussions and offering direct criticism of the candidate and his staff, Stevens in particular.

This is the article that is getting mad attention on the cable  news outlets right now and the one that inspired the Romney campaign to pull Bay Buchanan out of mothballs, dust her off, and sic her on the media in defense of the clearly wounded Mitt the Twit.

Here is Politico's description of the Eastwood chair incident and the campaign's reaction to it.

The convention finale was undermined even further by Eastwood’s rambling comedy routine, which became the only glimpse that many swing voters got of the Republican show. Eastwood had been added to the program after chatting with Romney at a fundraiser in Idaho just weeks before the convention.

Stevens and his team loved the idea of the tough-talking American icon greeting the millions of viewers tuning in to the main event. But Eastwood, unlike every other speaker at the tightly controlled convention, had free rein to say or do whatever he wanted without the campaign’s approval. Eastwood has said just minutes before going live, he was handed a chair to sit on, which he promptly decided should become a prop in his speech.

Many in the Romney high command watched in fury. Later, a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that for many voters — especially independents and casual viewers, exactly the ones convention organizers hoped to reach — the Eastwood skit, not Romney’s speech, was the highlight of the convention.

This morning Bay Buchanan essentially kept making the case that Romney is the one in charge of his own campaign. (Here is video of her appearance on the Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd. Listen to her gasping for breath. she is channeling Palin for God's sake!))

That actually may be EXACTLY the problem here, as a candidate is judged as to how he would run the country by how he has run his campaign. And IF this campaign were to be compared to the Titanic, it would not have simply sunk by hitting ONE iceberg, it would have careened off of every iceberg in the vicinity before sinking to the icy depths below.

So far the message most Americans are receiving from this Keystone Kops style campaign is, "Hey I'm Mitt Romney, and I can't do shit right. But hey hire me to run the country, and I promise I will figure it out somehow."

Good idea, Mitt! Sarah can run defense for you by attacking all of your nay-sayers sexuality or sexual performance. Always a winning statagey! Until of course she turns it on YOU. Hee, hee! Now that would be really fun!

Why don't you put Sarah Palin in charge of your campaign Mitt? It'll make your command seem more Presidential after all in the postmortem.

  3. And you say that Bain was successful? I wonder if there was a high-priced consultant on the staff providing advice. Maybe he had his own version of Andy Fastow to make the books look good while he stashed profits in offshore accounts.

The more I see of Rmoney, the less convinced I am that he ran Bain. He was just like George Bush with the "awl" companies, hired for the name. He has admitted he had to take billions from the government to run the Olympics, finally. He is just a figurehead, nothing more. He just wants to be president for the title, certainly not for the job. Dying his sideburns grey will not convince people he is presidential material. After W, we need INTELLIGENCE in the WH. We have that with President Obama.

If you think the people of the Middle East are overreacting to a bullshit movie depicting their religion in a bad light...

...just WAIT until it finally dawns on the so-called "Evangelicals" in America, that their boy Mitt fully embraces a "religion" in which Jesus Christ is depicted as a sexual pervert.

Or, I could be wrong on that. I have heard it speculated that if Charles Manson gets paroled and comes out declaring he is a "severe conservative" there would be a strong showing of support for him to run for office by the Republican radicals.

he'd run the US just like Bain - ship all the jobs to China, increase the debt loans from China, take the funds including Medicaid, Medicare, Unemployment and Social Security and then declare America bankrupt.

Hell - it's what Reagan did - practice reverse Robin Hoodery. Take from the elderly and unemployed and give to the uber rich.

Romney's no more in charge of his campaign than I am. He's a puppet, being pulled by extremely wealthy donors, the Koch brothers, et al.
His bumbling response to the violence in the Middle East last week was mind-numbingly disastrous.
His refusal to release 10 years worth of tax returns continues to haunt him and says a whole lot more (bad) about him than he realizes.
His visit to the Olympics overseas last month was a prime-time train wreck.
And this is all the Republicans have? Seriously???
I can't get over the fact that he and his wife apparently think it's 'his turn.' That's it in a nutshell. Mitt should be the president because it's 'his turn.' It's pre-ordained in the Book of Mormon.
    Unbelievable. Totally unbelievable.

If you listen to Bay's interview on Chuck Todd's MSNBC show, listen to her breathing.

Every few sentences, this huge inhale of air. Like she's hyperventilating or she ran to the interview and we know that one's not gonna happen!! The old broad doesn't have it in her.

It is not logical how all these old 'deadwood' Rethugs can defend trash every 4 years. Bay did it for Palin and others. It proves how 'its the win' and has nothing to do with what's best for the country or it's citizens. It's disgusting and to think they can actually live with themselves and sleep at night. I'd rather die. Romney & his Rethugs - they have no conscience among many other things.

You know, in 2008 I was a huge Clinton supporter. Obese crushed when she lost, and angry when she wasn't named VP. So I listened to the hype about Palin, did some research, and watched her first national speech. It wasn't two minutes before she was lying about her record. Then she starting ramping up lies about her opponents. I disliked her immediately.
Bur the GOP was convinced to the end that they would capture the female vote and win. They are equally convinced that those of us disappointed, not in Obama, but in the GOP's manipulations and machinations, will jump onto the bandwagon of two if the biggest liars in America. Will not happen. And around the country, Dems are doing far better than expected. Take your money and go buy an island somewhere Mitt. And Ryan, you may have to get a real job for the first time in decades. Hope Scott funds you one with benefits.

Hillary's talents and capabilities would have been 100% wasted as VP. She has done such a stellar job as SoS that it is hard to imagine her anywhere else (till 2016 and then maybe candidate for president).

VP would have been like a consolation prize for Hillary. At the State Dept, Hillary got to lead and be the point-person on Foreign Policy and she has really made me and many others proud of the job she's done. I hope she takes about a year and a half off, writes a book on policy and her time as Sec of State, and then starts touring and speaking until fall of 2015. And then I want to see her intentions made known in early 2016.

We love you, Hillary! You're a great American leader!

The problem for the GOP is twofold...it's their message and their messenger that are just terribly unpopular. Tax cuts for the rich, deregulation, privatizing Social Security, voucherizing Medicare, starting war in Iran, and doubling down on military spending while cutting education are just not going to get Mitl elected. Throw in some uterus invasion, personhood amendments and demonization of Latinos, Muslims, etc. and you have a toxic platform which is only appealing to a very narrow slice of the electorate.

So the GOP is surprised that a combination of failed policies and perhaps the most awkward, unlikeable, arrogant, and craven candidate is not winning just goes to show how utterly pathetic their party has become.

I can understand that lacking policy or plans, constant position shifting to con people to vote, progression to blatant lies, that the Romney campaign (managers and Romney) double down on the unethical and unprincipaled already failing tactics.

I do not hear nor see the republican ticket demonstrating how Romney is the man for the job. I
Have serious concerns about Romney and now the GOP in the face of international crisis that their sole focus is to incite fear and hatred in their base. blatant lies in the midst of a grave widespread situation says me first, screw the country, and screams Romney does not a leader make.

I judge a candidate by how he and his organization responds as real situations arise. Mitt blew his big opportunity to shine instead chosing to snuff out the light shrouding Obama in darkness with lies. Romney is a weak man and true loser.

BTW if Romney believes the middle earns 200-250k then they could get money from their parents for college. He's an asshole.

To show you how screwed up things are, I read a Facebook posting the opposite way than intended.

The posting above it, was one showing data to the effect that the "red states" are sucking out the tax money for their welfare existence, from the blue states, who pay more than their share of what they get out of the government.

So, when I read Romney's rant about those who suck off the government teat, I just assumed he was shaming Joe SueBob McFart, and his wife/sister Flow, from Dipshitt, Alabama, for not getting off their butts and looking out for themselves.

I made a comment to that effect, and had someone later point out to me that Romney was going after the DEMOCRATS, who support the Alabama folks.

I should have known Mitt would not attack his base of misinformed bigots, even off the record.
