Gabby Giffords emotional appearance at the Democratic convention.

Courtesy of the LA Times:

A surprise appearance by Gabrielle Giffords provided an emotional lift to an already celebratory atmosphere on the Democratic convention’s closing night, as the former Arizona congresswoman appeared onstage to lead the hall in the Pledge of Allegience.

After reciting the oath, Giffords waved and blew kisses to the audience before being led offstage, as chants of “Gabby” gave way to the Obama campaign’s signature cry: “Fired Up! Ready to Go!”

Okay THAT was awesome!

In other awesome news, I am back on line and also "Fired up, and ready to go!"

I had to DVR it, so I haven't watched yet. But I'm guessing you couldn't find the "f" in "Giffords" through the tears.

I was in tears to hear the improvement of her speech. I was over the moon thrilled to hear her recite the pledge with very minimal problems.

I posted earlier that Gabby was in Charlotte and again when I learned she was going to give the pledge -- this of course during your 'outage' and limited access to post the comments.

  6. Menschie and I saw Gabby walk out and were instantly overcome with pride and emotion. As she grabbed her gnarled right hand with her left hand and began the pledge, we spontaneously stood and pledged with her, facing our small cross stitched framed American and Israeli flags (made by Menschie's mother upon her gaining citizenship to this country- in tribute to where she was and where she HAD been)

Our voices rose as we got to "indivisible, under God, ONE nation, for LIBERTY and JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!" we both had tears overflowing at Gabby's triumph.

Granholm's speech was not just a home run -- she hit it from the Convention towards the west coast - over the ocean and beyond!! It may have fell into someone's vodka in Russia she was so good!!

I love when Granholm's appeared on one of the Sunday shows. She just slaps them up side the head wearing a smile and they don't know what hit them

Was reading elsewhere where they were saying Granholm for President. Many don't realize she can't as she's actually Canadian.

I think Canada just issued an Amber Alert looking to recover her!!

What would keep Jennifer Granholm from a bid for the US presidency is not her citizenship (US) but her birthplace (Canada).

Compared to a certain half-term governor, Jennifer Granholm graduated with honors from the Univ. of Berkeley in California and from Harvard Law School. As governor, Jennifer Granholm served her state proudly through two difficult terms with an insufferable Republican State Senate and an ever-worsening auto-related economy. She stuck it out, did her very best, raised her three children well, and never did anything to bring derision upon the people of Michigan.

Her reply speaks VOLUMES about how isolated she has become in political circles. The fact that she would even have this reaction is very telling. She's been so dissed by her own Repub comrades that she is literally an outcast that couldn't even hang out in the shopping mall parking lot, and so surprised that she would be a topic at all.

Add Kerry to the "Fuck You" list that Sarah adds more "enemy" names to almost every day.

Apparently Sarah forgot when she poked fun of John Kerry's physical features by saying "Why the long face" while speaking with troops. Of course her speech instead of uplifting and encouraging was self serving and mean spirited

I realize sarah probably wants to forget the exchange considering that her daughter now looks like Kerry's twin.

I feel such a contrast every time I see Gabby...just overwhelming love and appreciation for that amazing woman versus the absolute disgust and hate I feel for the witch from Wasilla who placed gunsights on the former congresswoman's name on the big map of progressives to be taken out by the rightwingers.

And Palin's operative very nearly succeeded with his assassination attempts on Gabby, besides all the other innocents he killed and maimed that bloody day.

That was a beautiful moment. What a spectacular evening it was! Each speech was great. A proud moment for Jennifer Granholm, who was an excellent governor here in Michigan for eight difficult years. And she even raised a family while governor although her children were never in the spotlight. I was absolutely riveted to the television screen last night and had many teary moments. How proud I am of the Democratic Party! Now we have to get to work and re-elect President Obama and Vice President Biden and give them a resounding Democratic majority in Congress!

I seldom ever cry, so when Gabby came on stage and began the pledge and my tears started flowing, I was overwhelmed with a mix of emotions: her courage, her beauty, her grace, the deep friendship she shares with her colleague Wasserman-Schultz, and the deep love her husband has for her. At the same time, I was saddened by the obvious toll her injuries have taken and wondered if she would ever again be the vibrant effective politician she once was. Nonetheless, I rejoiced in her recovery so far, and was so happy to see her at the Convention. Very moving experience. I don't think I have ever experienced the Pledge of Allegiance quite like that before.

    Hey, Welcome Back, Gryphen!

This was, by far, my favorite part of the convention.

Gabby just blew me away! I read her book, and Mark Kelly did a wonderful job of relaying their whole life and love story.

Gabby, at age 26, took over her family's large tire business and her dealings with the public inspired her to delve into public service. The last chapter was mostly in her own voice. The sentences are labored and incomplete, showing the extent of her injury, yet her beautiful smile, indefatigable resolve and spirit shined through.

Seeing how far she's come, and imagining the hard work she's put in so far, makes me believe her when she said "I will be back, I will get better". (without the benefit of therapeutic olympian horse ballet therapy, nor a PAC paid ghostwriter, BTW)

I'm so glad she was able to add her voice to the convention. My heart sank when her friend, Debbie Wasserman Schwartz prompted her with the first word, then my spirit soared seeing her proudly pledging her allegiance to the flag.
