Jon Stewart takes on the faux War on Christmas. And oh yes, he has Sarah Palin right in his sites. (I'm sorry I mean surveyor's marks.)
Love Jon Stewart! As always, he has Palin's number. Love the part about the Menorah. Palin, yet again, is babbling on about something that she has not a clue about.
The War on Christmas only has a few talking points: 1. They don't like the expression, "Happy Holidays." They command that you must say "Merry Christmas," even if you do not celebrate Christmas, if the listener doesn't celebrate Christmas or if you just want to include Hanukkah, New Years and Kwanza in your greeting. What ever happened to free speech? Isn't that what Track was bravely defending when he was over there defending our freedoms? 2. People are not being prevented from celebrating Christmas. From the looks of the shoppers and decorations, it is being celebrated in a materialist, commercial way, a way that the Pope already denounced. You can decorate your house, your garden, your church and stores can decorate everything in the place. There are no shortages of lights, reindeer, blow up things to put on your front lawn, Christmas is alive and well. 3. There are some places that should be free from religion since our tax dollars are paying for them, such as our public schools. The children attending may not all be Christian, and they may not all be celebrating Christmas. There are enough songs to sing about Frosty the Snowman, Chestnuts Roasting, Jingle Bells without bringing in songs about Christ. And, since our kids don't score so well, compared to other countries, how about spending more time learning and less time on decorations and songs. 4. While Palin and O'Reilly wage this pretend war on the war against Christmas, they never offer the positive things that people can do to protect the "Heart of Christmas," that strange expression that Palin concocted which must mean The Christmas Spirit. This is the time to give generously to those charities that provide food, clothing and gifts to the needy. The post offices are filled with letters to Santa, requests from kids for whom there won't be presents. This is probably the best time of year for the Salvation Army to make money, with their buckets and bell ringers out there. I never hear Sarah or Bill mention that people should imitate the Wise Men who brought gifts to Christ by giving gifts to those in need. 4. Neither Sarah nor Bill mention going to church. They are so busy fighting a make believe war that they forget that all that they have to do is go to church and they will hear all of the religious songs and greetings that seem to be the most important part of the holiday season for them. Oh, and decorations and presents, too.
Oh why oh why can't there be a happy marriage between 'gay apparel' and ugly Christmas sweaters? I'm tired of keeping them in separate closets. Joyeux Noel, everybody!

Sarah and Bill cannot be the word police of the world. The word "Christmas" comes from the Old English, meaning Christ's Mass, the one that is said in commemorating His birth. When Sarah and Bill insist of greeting people with Merry Christmas, they are really telling people to have a Merry time in church.
Bill and Sarah are not upset that people won't go to church to celebrate Christ's mass. They are upset about all of the other trappings of the holiday season, most of which have pagan origins, not religious origins. The tree, the yule log, was burned in Europe before Christ was born. It was meant as a symbol for the sun to start burning more brightly at that dark time of year. Candles, decorations, candy canes, Santa, greeting cards are all inventions that add to the festivities, but they are not religious. The only thing that should be important is the original mean of the word, going to church to celebrate Christ's mass, honoring his birth. So far, I have not seen any atheists running tanks down the streets blowing up nativity sets,unplugging tacky holiday lighting displays, or taking pot shots at partridges in bradford pear trees.
In fact, what does an atheist look like anyway? Since our house is always the one without the lights, the inflatables, and the only greenery are the unadorned spruce trees growing on the lawn, that might be a clue. Or perhaps not and I am just not buying into the holiday. Or the couple that light up their house and do the holiday stuff because they enjoy it and they have kids. They gave up on religion because they could no longer support a church that was covering up sex crimes against children.
So some of us are out of the closet....and especially this time of year that closet is a good place to hang out and just get away from all the crazy and a good time to pick up some bargains. Computer will work just fine in there...online it is.
I was raised Atheist but our family really liked shopping and putting up trees and decorating for xmas so we celebrated like everyone else. Pressies are awesome and I always appreciated that my parents would go all out and get us awesome gifts even if we weren't christian. Mother lives to shop so so xmas is right up her alley, Atheism be damned!

I went to college with a girl who was in the advanced stages of anorexia and her doctor told her that her brain was shrinking because her body was consuming it. Same with her heart. I am sorry that Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC. I always enjoyed hearing his viewpoints and appreciated his intelligence and forth right explantions, no matter the topic.

A funny thing happened when we watched Jon Stewart's show. On a small screen, computer or cell phone, Sarah looks OK. Magnified on the big 3D TV screen, you could see that her wig was lighter than her real hair. Even my husband wondered what was going on with her two-tone hair. The wig was just plopped on top of her head. It looked silly.

And why am I surprised? She's consistently shown herself to get the1st Amendment freedom of speech and freedom of the press backwards. And upside-down turkeys, also, too.
I think all the politicians, pundits, celebrities and assorted talking heads welcome the chance to burble about the "happy holidays" greeting. It saves them from addressing other issues, like our troops and drones in Afghanistan, killing and being killed for yet another year. Or our crumbling infrastructure, dismal job outlook, education cost/results, poverty,... Oh, so much better to whip out some pithy phrases to inflate their already out-sized egos and jockey for the best sound bite.

DeleteI loved the part about the menorah on the kitchen table for the month of December so her kids (any of em, all of em that have been put in front of her over the years) could learn about the Jewish Faith.
