John McCain lets slip that President Obama went against all advice and refused to arm Syrian rebels back in 2013, many of who now make up the dreaded ISIL.

Appearing on Fox News with Greta Van Susteren, John McCain let this slip:

McCain continued his push for war in both Iraq and Syria, saying the fight requires the “full weight of American air power” as well as “some more boots and support on the ground.” He added, “All this didn’t have to happen. We could have left a force behind in Iraq that would have stabilized Iraq. And we are paying an incredible price for the president’s leading from behind, whether it be in Iraq, in Syria, in Libya, or a number of countries in the Middle East. We are seeing the chickens coming home to roost.”

The senator proceeded to seriously misspeak when he described a 2013 meeting in the White House in which everyone on the administration’s national security team “recommended arming ISIS.” But, he explained, “the president, by himself, turned it down.”

What McCain likely meant to say was that Obama’s team, including then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, wanted to arm the “moderate” Syrian rebels in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad, but Obama did not want to. Van Susteren neglected to correct his mistake.

As Obama decided at the time, the lack of distinction between the “moderate” rebels and the Islamic extremists, including ISIS, who were fighting Assad made the idea of arming any opposition in Syria an extremely risky proposition.

In other words President Obama made a careful calculation, and determined that the USA could not adequately determine who among the Syrian rebellion could be trusted not to misuse American provided weaponry.

Which in still other words meant that he made a carefully considered intelligent presidential decision, which is clearly something John McCain is not capable of doing.

  2. Well worded!
It was and is so complicated in the Middle East.
What on Earth will we do if the war mongers gain power again in 2016? And will John McCain and his ilk please stop sabotaging our President and his foreign policy decisions?
Put him on Fox, with the duck callers, please..

Even though McCain was in Congress in the 1980s when the USSR invaded Afghanistan and the U.S. decided to arm the Mujaheddin, he has learned NOTHING. The same rebels we armed have turned out to be some of our worst enemies, and that equipment we gave them? Oh, some of them became members of the Taliban and turned around and used it on our troops in Iraq.

  4. If there was ever any doubt that Goold Ol' Gramps McCain was a charter member of the International League of Extraordinarily Inadequate Gentlemen, he forever removed that doubt - and 95% of any credibility he might have previously claimed - when he chose The Screech Wretch(tm) to be his "losing from behind" running mate in 2008.

Gryphen, the key sentence in the above post is this: Van Susteren neglected to correct his mistake.
This is the pattern, and it works, dammit!
The low/limited information voters who watch FOX will swa;llow this without question and the damage is done.

When McSenile and his leading lady from South Carolina round up their grandchildren and friends of their grandchildren to bootie up, oh yeah repeating dumb times failed, has a minimum of potential. The USA minus a few Bushes, McMesses and and silly descendents of a South Carolina confused idiot is not a plan.

What the fool Dubya unleashed with his corporate crony criminals will take some time to dial back. Dubya, the gift that keeps on giving us monumental bills and threats from those who object to indiscriminate bombing.

Saddam, Cheney's pal, Bin Laden friend of all Bushes and Saudi elite. Just flabbergasted that Fox stupid and others think that the way out of the Bush/Bush/Cheney mess is more bombs are the way to friendship.

Like any sane person would listen to McCain when he picked meth head Granny Sarah for his running mate.

"Crash" McCain must either have some serious investments in war equipment, or he owes (big time) to someone who does. He is a well known compulsive gambler, so maybe he owes lots of $$$ to someone who really, really, really wants a war - with ANYONE. They should ban him from travelling overseas, undermining the President. He is a sore loser. Why is he even on TV constantly, he contributes absolutely nothing but war, war, war. Retire, Gramps, you are too old for this game.

Thank God John McCain did not win the election back in 2008. He has shown very poor judgement over the years. Of course, his greatest mistake was picking a know nothing for Vice President (yes, Sarah, a know nothing, not a no nothing; got the difference?).

Can you imagine if McCain won? We'd be at war in Syria and possibly with Russia over the Ukraine. And to make matters worse we'd have an idiotic shank as a VP.

How about we just let these crazy religious foreign people figure it out for themselves, huh? I hear "Middle Eastern Country" and just tune it out because they are going to have to either exterminate each other or find a way to get along. I don't support any American involvement. I don't care if they ALL kill each other, and if that is the eventual outcome they'll save a lot of dollars and trouble for other countries.

I agree. Why does the US ALWAYS jump into these battles? These people will NEVER stop fighting each other. Unfortunately, the Cheney/Bush administration made things even worse and now the US is the villan. Do "we the people" pay for McCain's visits to these places overseas? If so, he should be grounded. Either that, or have him fly with a pilot who is as incompetant as he is.

I got a great Idea, next GOP convention, can John McCain stand in for the part of the empty chair? The man has lost all his marbles.
One would think he'd not say a word and just pass go and collect his 200 bucks. First "Bomb Iran" then, the funniest of all, "I choose Sarah Palin as my Vice President Running Mate".
Talk about leading from behind, he put the bit between her buttcheeks and dragged her around the country on a trip to loserdom.
I hardly ever say this, but God made damn sure the right team won! TWICE!

"Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran" McCain. The "don't hurt me, I'll sing like a bird," but favors water boarding like his "let me phone a friend" thinks it's baptism. Who the hell ARE these people?

The majority of our citizenry that pay attention KNEW what was going to happen if we went to war with Iraq and now we're reaping it. Put blame where blame is due....this country was never the same after Dubya and Cheney were illegally put into office by a corrupt SCOTUS, That Clinton stands next to him and smile in solidarity is exactly why I will never vote for Hillary. They're all the same, people, we're screwed as regular people trying to go about their lives.

And Queen Esther riding in to save the day like the pee pond is praying for? BWAHAHAHAHAHA I'll bet it takes her a good hour every day to find where she left her glasses the night before. Those people are clueless as to what she's doing.

Thanks for letting me rant, Gryph.

Because the Tea Party nutjobs are all too old to be put into active military duty, they are all quite anxious to see OTHER people, especially those pesky young folks, pushed into battle, for no reason anyone can logically explain.

I've been guilty as many of us have in the past, of lightly mocking McCain for his history as a shitty pilot, student and public servant but while we're chuckling as this doddering old curmudgeon let us not forget what a dangerous and reckless man this fucker was and is. For anyone, anywhere to dare place a sociopathic demagogue such as Sarah Palin within reach of a goddamn scissors let alone a nuclear arsenal requires such blind ambition and disregard for all things of reason that it should qualify said person for a straight jacket. John McCain should have been fucking keel hauled, that asshole.
