John Fogerty has some opinions on the Republicans claiming that his song "Fortunate Son" was inappropriate for a Veteran's Day concert.

So I am sure you all remember that Bruce Springsteen, and a number of talented musicians, played the song "Fortunate One" during the Concert of Valor at the National Mall in Washington D.C. and that Right Wing literally lost their minds over it.

So in a recent Rolling Stone interview John Fogerty, who wrote the song, was asked about that response:

"'Fortunate Son' is a song I wrote during the Vietnam War over 45 years ago," Fogerty said in a statement. "As an American and a songwriter, I am proud that the song still has resonance. I do believe that its meaning gets misinterpreted and even usurped by various factions wishing to make their own case. What a great country we have that a song like this can be performed in a setting like Concert for Valor.

"Years ago, an ultraconservative administration tried to paint anyone who questioned its policies as 'un-American,'" he continues. "That same administration shamefully ignored and mistreated the soldiers returning from Vietnam. As a man who was drafted and served his country during those times, I have ultimate respect for the men and women who protect us today and demand that they receive the respect that they deserve."

What the conservative mouthpieces either failed, or refused to understand, is that the song is VERY supportive of the soldiers themselves. Who the song was criticizing were the politicians who start these wars and then send American sons (And now daughters) to die in countries that THEIR children will only ever visit in times of peace.

Both John Fogerty and Bruce Springsteen are American institutions, and I would put their patriotism up against anyone. Especially some conservative jackass sitting on his fat ass, sipping Fox newsroom coffee, and faking outrage in order to rile up the paint chip eaters.

Fogerty goes on to point out that he recently performed "Fortunate One" at "A Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House" just last week. A performance by the way that was broadcast on PBS.

And guess which song he played? That's right.

And the outrage from the Right Wing?

Only this.

Well, to be fair, the performance was,1. at the White House, 2. on PBS, and 3. not on Fox so of course there was nothing but crickets. None of the right wingers saw it.

O/T but damned important. This is how we are represented by our president. Other countries recognize how amazing he is and they don't hold back on expressing it.

US President Barack Obama’s broad-ranging speech on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brisbane has won praise from across the business community and from politicians from across the spectrum.

...And here came the President, that slim-line swing of his; a mere lifting of the hand drawing the 900 students ranked in the bleachers to their feet.

"I love being in Australia, I really do," he cracked. "The only problem is I've got to sit in conference rooms and attend meetings instead of going to the beach."

You'd think Obama had it signed, sealed and delivered right there, half the crowd fairly swooning at his little half smile, but he was just getting into stride.

...The room was silent, held enthral by a man many had seen but none had seen. And then it was over.

Before he could even finish delivering his blessings, pandemonium broke out.

The crowd surged right. Then forward. Then left. Hands raised and phones aloft.

And through it all, the President maintained his folksy charm. A small chat here, a joke there, a selfie or 100 over there.

One woman, desperate to get closer jumped like a mountain goat over a chair.

Even she seemed surprised to have made it, but she shook off the shock quickly.

After all, Obama was only 30 centimetres away. Others followed suit. Two women managed to leap, jump and dash their way through close enough for the Obama-selfie. They were so excited after, they could barely speak.

And the "power of the man and the message," as former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan put it following the speech, was enough to bring even the most bitter of enemies together, if even for a moment.

Yep - probably a lobbyist w/Conoco from which he came! Alaska will be glad to be rid of him! The stench of Sarah and Todd Palin (co-quitter govs) will also be gone with him! Having the Anchorage mayor as his partner didn't help his chances either!

It's bizarre that 'Fortunate Son' created a stir while the right wing ignored Bruce's anti-war ballad, 'Born in the USA.' Bruce sang it so it's meaning was clear.

Did the right not recognize the song because it was performed slowly? 'Born' is a favorite at GOP campaign rallies. Are they too embarrassed to admit it's an anti-war tune?

  5. Oh, they understand it all right. That's why they're freaking. It calls them out once again for the cowardly chicken hawks they and their offspring are. Just more right wing fake outrage. It must be Saturday.

I have never heard one veteran complain about this song. As far as I am concerned, the chicken hawks complaining can all go straight to hell.

o/t -- Obama Diary shows pictures of his spectacular speech in Brisbane and the great reception he enjoyed.
Too funny: the Austrialian Prime Minister gave a koala to Putin to hold, as well as to Obama.
Putin's koala fought to get away from him. Obama's looked like a baby in his arms, and reached out to kiss the koala held by Abbott, the Aussie P.M. Huge smile from Obama.
The world loves him. So do koalas. Try that, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney, Joni Ernst or the rest of you GOP suits.
Oh, and Putin left the G20 summit early because he was getting so much flak for Ukraine. The Canadian PM, Harper,
told him right to his face.

Has anyone in the national media in the USA covered the positive response that President Obama received in Australia?

His going 'out of the country' is how he comes back to America with new found energy to do what he must to handle the continual obstruction of the U.S. Congress! He is loved and respected overseas - there is no doubt about it! Plus, he is in the USA too, but the media and Republicans cover it up by spewing all the negative. They hate the fact he won TWICE, is half black and beat his Republican opposition handily!

I voted for him both times and hope he vetoes the pipeline from Canada and can hardly wait for him to put his immigration law into effect!

America knows he is operating within the law even though the asshole Republicans swear up and down that he isn't! Do they really think that President Obama would operate outside of the law when all eyes are constantly upon him? They are nothing more than obstructionists and racists and will go down in 2016 AGAIN!

    Fuck the GOP.
"Fortunate One" is a song written and originally played by an Combat Vet for the rest of us vets and current military members at that time and forward. The song tells the dirty secret of wars, that most serving are the poor and lower middle class.
Fuck the GOP, always "armchair" vets that have never served or never cared about those that have except for photo ops.
John Fogarty is my brother, as is every man that served in Nam and every woman is my sister. And I am well past these attacks on us VN vets and I will not be silenced. We were treated like crap while the likes of Mitt Romney spent 2 yrs in France avoiding the duty the rest of us answered.
    Oh and Fuck the GOP

I voted for Obama twice, but I was never a maniac about him. Obama is to conservative for my liking, but he sure is a refreshing change from George Bush. He does have style and class so it's no surprise to me other world leaders and people like him. He's a very likeable guy, smart too.
He has brought things back to where they were before the crash, which is not enough for me, but Republican legislators have been assholes to him and the American people.
Yes, I like Obama and I hope he has a place in American politics in the future, but that doesn't happen usually (at least as an elected position). He wouldn't be the first ex-president to run and serve as a Senator.
