Discrimination complaint filed against Colorado baker for refusing to put anti-gay messages on Bible shaped cake. How dare she!

Courtesy of National Post:

Marjorie Silva, owner of Denver’s Azucar Bakery, is facing a complaint from a customer alleging she discriminated against his religious beliefs.

According to Silva, the man who visited last year wanted a Bible-shaped cake, which she agreed to make. Just as they were getting ready to complete the order, Silva said the man showed her a piece of paper with hateful words about gays that he wanted written on the cake. He also wanted the cake to have two men holding hands and an X on top of them, Silva said.

She said she would make the cake, but declined to write his suggested messages on the cake, telling him she would give him icing and a pastry bag so he could write the words himself. Silva said the customer didn’t want that.

“It’s just horrible. It doesn’t matter if, you know, if you’re Catholic, or Jewish, or Christian, if I’m gay or not gay or whatever,” said Silva, 40, adding that she has made cakes regularly for all religious occasions. “We should all be loving each other. I mean there’s no reason to discriminate.”

Discrimination complaints to Colorado’s Civil Rights Division, which is reviewing the matter, are confidential. Silva said she would honour the division’s policy and would not share the correspondence she has received from state officials on the case. KUSA-TV reported the complainant is Bill Jack of Castle Rock, a bedroom community south of Denver.

In a statement to the television station, Jack said he believes he “was discriminated against by the bakery based on my creed.”

“As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division. Out of respect for the process, I will wait for the director to release his findings before making further comments.”

You know you hear so much about Christian love and acceptance, but I have to say until you see it in action you really cannot begin to  appreciate it fully.

Sarah Palin rambles on about Chris Kyle, ‘Hollywood hypocrites,’ and running for office in 2016

This was from days ago. Dakota Myers is on one TODAY and wants his Micheal TARGET poster with Sarah to go VIRAL.

      http://cnsnews.com/blog/michael-w-chapman/harvey-weinstein-spins-smear-american-sniper-i-think-michael-moore-may-have

Weinstein then claimed, “It might have been misquoted because I will tell you, at Michael’s theater, which we book a lot in Michigan, is probably the only theater I know that’s free to servicemen. So, if you’re a serviceman, you go to Michael’s theaters in Michigan for nothing, and your families for nothing too.”

“So, I think it’s something about his family looked at snipers a certain way and that became the quote like ‘snipers are cowardly.’ It wasn’t a reaction, I think, to this movie. I think people put two quotes together.”

Also former service people have preference in being hired at the theatre. Employees also get good benefits. Most of the people who do shifts at the theatre are volunteers - a great opportunity for area retirees - and they are treated very well. Feted even. Michael Moore is a good citizen and a decent person, much more than can be said for Sarah Palin and any of her fellow travelers. Michael Moore has made our hometown a lot more interesting with the renovated downtown movie theatre and the derelict small museum converted into a second in town movie theatre, the annual Film Festival (no. 11 next summer) and the Winter Comedy Festival. He has also spearheaded the renovation of other old movie theaters in other communities. We're very grateful to him for all he has contributed to our lives.

Why would someone go to the effort of getting a specialty cake made, and then want to write anti-gay slogans on the cake?

What is the occasion for the cake? What exactly are they celebrating?

Sounds like a closeted gay to me.

I think he was just baiting her, just to use her like 'christian' bakeries have been used by gays for refusing to make them wedding cakes.

I googled the "gentleman". He is a co founder of something called Worldview Academy dedicated to help children think and learn in the Christian world view. Or his interpretation of it. And he is associated with the Caleb Campaign, a creationist youth ministry. And she was willing to make him a Bible cake. So she did not discriminate against his creed. She discriminated against him for being a self hating douche bag

Makes me curious about Bill Jack the "Hate Cake" client and the occasion it was for.

    1. The occasion was wasting his limited time on earth to indulge in petty, mean, nasty, and hateful behavior with the goal of hurting the bakery owner. All the verses in the bible about love, not judging, taking care of the beam in your own eye, and laying down your life for another went right over this nasty creature's head.

He maybe a bible thumper, but he is no Christian.

In a true free-market society, people should be able to do business with whom they want. Just like the guy who didn't wanna make a gay cake shouldn't have been harassed.

So what if you were in a car accident, and arrive at the ER and need urgent surgery, and the only doctor on duty says, " nope, I won't treat a Teaparty guy, or any Christians or Catholics,, or anyone wearing a head covering"

How would you feel if you went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist won't dispense your meds because she says "I won't fill prescriptions for anyone who voted for Obama?

All cultures and societies have laws, and businesses that are open to the public that are offering a product for ALL COMERS have to comply with the law.

    2. How would you feel if you ran out of gas on a dark and lonely road, walked to the nearest gas station and were told that they wouldn't serve you and you would have to go to the one 15 miles down the road?

If the public's tax dollars pay for the roads the business uses to transport its goods and services, the police and fire departments that protect it, the public utilities that provide needed power, the government offices that provide servicing of needed paper work and administrative details, then no, you don't get to choose which members of that public you will serve.

And until corporate welfare, subsidies, tax breaks, and bought and paid for congresscritters are abolished, we do not have, have never had, and never will have your fantasy so-called "free" market.

Also too, note that her hair is dangling way down below her hat, and her human dander is falling into the chili.

Bad hygiene, as everyone with long hair should have it all tied back and covered, but of course $arah wouldn't know that, or think of it, or maybe the folks running the kitchen don't give a shit

  8. And yet if a gay couple went to a "christian" bakery, the owner would feel it is his right to refuse to serve them because it violates HIS beliefs.

Patty, there is a major difference between legally defined and recognized discrimination and hate speech.

Personally, I cannot see how refusing to promote hate speech can be even slightly considered discrimination.

Clearly this was all a set up for the guy to make publicity about "liberal hypocrisy" and "the war on Christianity". The fact that he waited until after the cake was made to suddenly want hate speak put on it makes it obvious.

Once again conservatives are shown to have the mentality of a two year old. I have no doubt that in that guy's twisted, malformed mind, there is no difference whatsoever between a gay couple wanting a wedding cake and a Christian wanting a gay-hate cake.

You may want to read the posted article again, Boscoe. If not, here's the line you seem to have missed: "Just as they were getting ready to complete the order, Silva said the man showed her a piece of paper with hateful words about gays that he wanted written on the cake." That is in paragraph 2, line 2.

Sure doesn't sound like what you were describing, does it?

Hope she wins. If I were she, I'd charge five grand per letter, plus ten grand for each "x". She didn't go to cooking school to promote hate, and it's her business and she has every right to make the rules. You know, Like Chic Fil A, Hobby Lobby and Happy Endings Massage Parlor.

  16. There are limits to supplying any service.

This business chose not to become a party to hate speech. No one should be forced to be a part of hate or discrimination.

I will assume she would be allowed to decline to make a gun cake with "assassinate the N****** in the White House" and no one would question that.

If a restaurant can refuse service if you lack a shirt or shoes, i would think a baker can refuse to participate in hate speech.
