In today's edition of "News that should not be news to anybody" we learn that a new study states there are more gun deaths in states with fewer gun restrictions.

Courtesy of the Violence Policy Center:

Newly available data for 2013 reveals that states with weak gun violence prevention laws and higher rates of gun ownership have the highest overall gun death rates in the nation, according to a Violence Policy Center (VPC) analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Meanwhile, states with the lowest overall gun death rates have lower rates of gun ownership and some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the nation. However, even in these states the human toll of gun violence is far above the gun death rate in other industrialized nations.

The five states with the highest per capita gun death rates in 2013 were Alaska, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Wyoming. Each of these states has extremely lax gun violence prevention laws as well as a higher rate of gun ownership. The state with the lowest gun death rate in the nation was Hawaii, followed by Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Each of these states has strong gun violence prevention laws and a lower rate of gun ownership.

“Reducing exposure to firearms and having stronger gun laws saves lives,” says VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand. “Each year, the data consistently show that states with strong gun violence prevention laws and low rates of gun ownership have the lowest gun death rates in the nation. The highest gun death rates are in states with weak gun violence prevention laws and easy access to guns.”

And once again there we have Alaska, right at the top of a list of dangerous behaviors and deadly life choices. I can barely hide my pride.

More guns mean more gun deaths. There should never, and I mean NEVER, be any argument about this.

O/T but Gryphen, you MUST see/hear this! Stephen Fry is not holding back!

In an interview to be broadcast on Irish TV, English actor and author Stephen Fry didn’t mince words about what he would say to God if he died and went to heaven, calling him “capricious, mean-minded, and stupid.”

Speaking with host Gay Byrne on the RTÉ show ‘The Meaning of Life,’ Fry stunned the venerable TV personality by launching into a scathing attack on God, when asked what he would say if faced with the deity.

“Suppose it’s all true, and you walk up to the pearly gates and you are confronted by God” Byrne asked a smiling Fry. “What would Stephen Fry say to him, her, or it?”

“I think I’d say ‘Bone cancer in children? What’s that about? How dare you! How dare you create a world in which there is such misery that is not our fault? It’s not right. It’s utterly, utterly evil,’ ” an animated Fry replied. “Why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?”

The clearly disturbed Byrne then asked him, “And you think you’re going to get in?”

“No, but I wouldn’t want to. I wouldn’t want to get in on his terms. They’re wrong.” Fry replied. “Now, if I died and it was Pluto, Hades, if it was the 12 Greek gods, then I would have more truck with it. Because the [Greek gods] were – they didn’t pretend not to be human in their appetites, and in their capriciousness, and in their unreasonableness. They didn’t present themselves as being all-seeing, all-wise, all-kind, all-beneficent.”

Fry was only warming up, and continued,

It makes me sick to my stomach that Anchorage, Alaska is the worst crime place in the country as well as #1 in deaths by guns in 2013. January, 2015 is now going to surpass that 2013 record! Plus, Alaska is rated #1 in rapes!

    Great place to live, Alaskans!

Alaska has gotten worse and worse over the years when Republicans have been at the helm! The police departments have failed too. Amazing to watch! The majority of those populating Anchorage are now afraid to go out at night when the shootings (randomly) are occurring!

I thought Sarah Palin cleaned up corruption in Alaska. She was even talking about that in her summit speech. She wants people to do something about all those problems. She has too many secrets so she never comes right out and says what she means. I haven't heard any comprehensive plans from her.

All of the country has problems with the gun culture. It only seems to get worse. We are becoming a sad and negative place.

Can you believe that Clint Eastwood would do this? As Michael Moore tells it.
"Clint Eastwood stood in front of the National Board of Review awards dinner and announced to me and to the crowd that he would ‘kill’ me if I ever came to his house with my camera for an interview."

Clint Eastwood probably got a huge applause because that is the spirit of many Americans.

'Get out of here, you low-life scum' John McCain.
He is another one that has hero status in some groups.

Those are adult men that children should be able to look up to. Sad.

This is good. Veteran Garett Reppenhagen continues his discussion with Lawrence O'Donnell... that is excellent and we should have more discussions and people like both of those men.

Clint Eastwood is a mean nasty rightwinger. I am not surprised he would threaten to kill Michael Moore.

And leave it to Texas to celebrate a psychopathic killer. Wonder how Sarah will find a way to latch onto this for her benefit, she's known for riding everyone's coattails and stealing their thunder, isn't she.

    This is beyond disgusting:

The bigger problem with Kyle is not his embellishments, but his enthusiasm for killing. I can respect his honor in choosing to serve his country and protect his fellow soldier. What I find troubling is the man we are requested to perceive as a hero also happened to posses some troubling sociopathic tendencies, making him a very uncomfortable figure for celebration.

So, the VPC skewed the data by conflating all gun deaths into a single piebald, and did not account for population density.
Take a look at the states with the highest gun death. Remember those..
Now take a look at the states that have the lowest population densities..
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_population_density
Turns out you can conflate gun suicide with all other forms of gun death (knowing the VPC it's not unlikely justifiable homicide was included) and skew the results to frame "gun deaths" as being in correlation with gun ownership.
Not gun murder, not accidents, not suicide.. but just "gun deaths"..
Turns out, the gun murder rate in the "top 10" states with the most "gun deaths" is lower than Connecticut.
However, we could use the same technique and say that similar correlation exists with population density. Is it a coincidence that the states with the lowest population density happen to have the highest suicide rates?
    This is not discussed...
Instead we get confirmation bias from the VPC.. All form cherry picked data that when viewed from an objective point of view paints a very different picture than what the VPC has spoon fed us.

The film appears to be facts about Kyle's life and the wars. IT IS NOT. Unfortunately, too many people are taken in by the mistakes because it is a good film (if you like that genre) and they are selling it as good for the vets since they show what it is like for them.

Those were conversations I can recall trying to have with people when they were buying into all the lies and propaganda about those wars. Now it is a little late. But yeah we should know about what vets suffer and try to help.

It is cheap idolatry to make Kyle into the movie character faux hero. Just an extension of the same war propaganda as got us into the mistake of the war.

The movie also ties 9-11 to Iraq in an unreal way. And like Sarah Palin did with Track Palin it does that thing where the hero is all patriot due to 9-11. That was said to not be accurate in the film.

I really hope people will wake up to the subtle and not so subtle propaganda they are being fed. It is illicit crap. Not saying the acting and movie isn't good talent and a good movie. But it is like it is tricking people with stealth lies,

Repeat them enough and they will be like truth in the heart and minds of many.

    Gryphen,
You are dead on about Palin and all issues Palin. But dead wrong on all firearms issues and do not come crawling to my place when SHTF and you are starving. That said everyone interested in crime and gun control must read : MORE GUNS/LESS CRIME by John R. Lott, Jr.
