Courtesy of CNN:
In at least one big and bruising culture-war battle, the Mormon church wants to call a partial truce.
Convening a rare press conference on Tuesday at church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Mormon leaders pledged to support anti-discrimination laws for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people, as long the laws also protect the rights of religious groups.
In exchange, the Mormon church wants gay rights advocates -- and the government -- to back off.
"When religious people are publicly intimidated, retaliated against, forced from employment or made to suffer personal loss because they have raised their voice in the public square, donated to a cause or participated in an election, our democracy is the loser," said Elder Dallin Oaks, a member of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles.
"Such tactics are every bit as wrong as denying access to employment, housing or public services because of race or gender."
So in other words the church will not spend millions of dollars to fight laws allowing marriage equality so long as they retain the right to discriminate against them, and preach that their lifestyle is deviant and an affront to God.
Oh yeah, seems so fair.
And remember there are NO gay Mormons. Only Mormons who want to have sex with members of the same gender but repress the hell out of it for the sake of their church.
It is ironic. The Mormons are the keepers of Ancestry records and they should be. Because having multiple wives and kids galore all named joseph smith and brigham is a nightmare for ancestry researchers. DNA is the only hope to sort out their mess and our nightmare. This is a problem for families around the world when completing their family tree and history..
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that we haven't had Mormon missionaries visit our house for the past several years. The last time they came it was mid-winter but not as cold as usual and there they were - two peas in a pod in matching puffy jackets and shining, smiling faces. I used to enjoy telling them that I wasn't in the least bit interested.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
So the Mormons didn't like the fact that spending a fortune to suppress the rights of others made them look like total assholes and gave them an even worse image. Got it. It's nice to see a little progress, though. I hope this doesn't have anything to do with the possibility of Mittens 2016.
ReplyDeleteThe entire Mormon cult is laughably out of touch.
ReplyDeleteUntil 1978, black people were 3rd class humans, until some Mormon bigwig decided it would be politically expedient, and then he had a "revelation", and they decided to change God's laws.
How fucking convenient.
These people are living a 19th century lie, built on a mistranslated bible, built on Bronze age desert religions from the BC era.
Are they EVER going to wake up?
Speaking of which, Megyn Kelley of Fox news has a brilliant comment to another God Botherer (Huckabee). Huck is all upset because women in New York City actually swear!
She tells him on LIVE TV that:
I do have some news for you before I let you go. We are not only swearing. We’re drinking, we’re smoking, we’re having premarital sex, we have birth control before we go to work, and sometimes boss around a bunch of men.
http://crooksandliars.com/2015/01/megyn-kelly-mike-huckabee-women-are-having
Huck's only answer is "I don't want to hear that"
Just like the Mormon hypocrites with their pandering bullshit to the LGBTQ folks, the ChristoFascists would really rather not deal with any of this "progress"
Ultimately, every religion is based on either lies, mythology, superstition, or pure fabricated belief in non existent entities.
ReplyDeleteSome people may yet be doing "good" as a result of religion, but they are doing so based on a false premise, however sincere.
In this case, the Mormons are doing nothing but pandering to try and bridge a gap, as a response to the inevitability of the LGBTQ folks finally getting legal rights in our culture.
My sincere hope is that eventually humans evolve to finally leave behind anything not logical, factual, and proven by science, and live by critical thinking , logic, compassion, and an innate sense of morality.
All religions inevitably produce people who use it for war, greed, tribal conflict, opression of women and children, or for self aggrandizement, leading to the plethora of problems we see around the world.
In my opinion, religion is nothing more than a virus ; it is a cancer of the mind and will hopefully some day be completely eradicated.
If an alien race from a star system thousands of years advanced beyond ours were to arrive at planet earth, I believe they would be appalled with the utter chaos, ignorance injustice, poverty, and violence humans perpetrate on each other based on religion, race, and tribal differences.
My suspicion is that it will take at least a thousand years before humans can leave behind the primitive Bronze age belief systems that plague our civilizations.
The mormon church is accepting same sex marriage because the next step is the acceptance of polygamous marriage. If two people of the same sex can love one another and commit to spending their lives together, more than one woman can love one man, and one man can love more than one woman, blah, blah, blah. That is the persecution they want stopped. It is the foundation of their beliefs. And all the child abuse and domestic abuse that goes along with it. Maybe they have a valid argument. Please read Under the Banner of Heaven, by John Krakeaur for the truth about Mormons and the foundation of their faith.
ReplyDeleteor the book of mormon. for the truth about mormons and the foundation of their faith.
DeleteOne Nation Under Gods is better.
DeleteI don't need to read the book of mormon for thier "truth' and the foundation of their cult. We see the reality of them w/o reading fiction. And mormons are discouraged from knowing their own truth, the foundation of their 'faith' and history of their 'prophet'. The book of mormon? Don't make me laugh.
Deletewhy exactly should i try to learn about the Mormon faith from those who became disenfranchised and left? doesn't seem like I'd get a very informed answer.
DeleteNone so blind as those who will not see.
Deletegrowing up I had the head of jehova w. and mormon bishop as closest neighbors. they both were loud. they cursed. they were crooks and beat their kids. the mo's tried to get my parents to ground me from my horse at 10 to get me baptized. it seemed like a weird depressing fog is what I associate with tthose times. always on the edge. the world will end tomorrow. no hope for a bright future. quite depressing for a kid. I therefore never got that into it. I'm a much happier person. in these times the mo's wil say about anything to get Willard in there. he's the Chosen-dontcha know???

DeleteThere should never, ever be any compromise when it comes to equal rights for everyone.
ReplyDelete"In exchange, the Mormon church wants gay rights advocates -- and the government -- to back off.", said the engineers & money backers of Proposition 8.
ReplyDeleteIt must be nice to be able to throw away 20 Million tax exempt Dollars on stopping a peccadillo in another state and then take a tax deduction on the donation to a political cause.
Come on, how naive are you people? This is all about helping Mittens with another run for the Presidency. They are trying to make him look like the reasonable Republican and siphon a few votes out of the middle.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the mormon church on this one. The rights of religion is important, as well as equal rights. the Mormon church, like all churches, have every right to decide what doctrine is true and what doctrine is false. Thats what a religion is, a club of like minded people. No one is forced to join a religion, and as such no religion should force their lifestyles. Good compromise.
ReplyDeleteThey do force it on their kids, hon.
DeleteYou've missed the mark, 8:10. The Mormon "Church" intends to continue to discriminate in employment against LGBT humans in violation of their Constitutional rights.
DeleteEver try to get a decent job after they build a Mormon Temple in your town if you're not a Mormon? Here's a hint - you'll get a job at half the rate the boss' Mormon friend/relative does with none of the benefits the boss' Mormon friend/relative gets, cleaning up the Mormon's mess, doing the Mormon's work, which entails taking over non-Mormon organizations and stealing their lands and holdings.
DeleteNope, they don't force adults to join. Right up until that part where they've taken everything you own, infiltrated your government and cut all social services and offered you a meal at their Stake.
The Mormons have offered NOTHING to gay people.
ReplyDeleteThe Associated Press explained: “Mormon leaders still want to hire and fire workers based not only on religious beliefs, but also on behavior standards known as honor codes that require gays and lesbians to remain celibate or marry someone of the opposite sex
Maybe there's hope yet --
ReplyDeleteGay Scientists Isolate Christian Gene
I changed ONE word and think it makes a better point....
ReplyDelete"When GAY people are publicly intimidated, retaliated against, forced from employment or made to suffer personal loss because they have raised their voice in the public square, donated to a cause or participated in an election, our democracy is the loser,"
"Such tactics are every bit as wrong as denying access to employment, housing or public services because of race or gender."
Unfortunately sometimes we must really make our point to those that want to impose their personal beliefs, rules and regulations on the rest of us. I have the old sign NO trespassing No soliciting. It wasn't just the Mormons interested in saving me and my property it was 7th, j witness, and the Mormons driving up the driveway like they owned the place. Donations and members are down, Times are tight for all.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, Bryan Fisher has been fired from the...wtf-ever he was doing. American Family Assholes or something. he still has his radio gig, but no longer a spokesman....well..he never was much except for his own twisted theology. Fk him and goodby.
ReplyDeleteThank the stars the lgbt community has Donny and Marie to defend them. Come on, purple socks, rainbow coat, Nutrasystem, botox, lipo, breast implants. Woo hoo, The way the good lord wanted people. Marie even got the fish face thing going, divorced her husband, waited a few years and remarried him. Fits right in with Church Doctrine, so I suppose the LGBT community wins!!!
ReplyDeleteOh wait, they gave us Romney (whose car elevator and mansion are up for sale, he's running as one of the regular folk) Wonder what will Queen Ann be wearing? Target? Sears? JCPenny?
We're not morons, mormons.
Meanwhile in Mormon land.................
