Tom Schweich, Missouri's Republican state auditor and a leading contender for the governor's office in next year's election, has died, according to his office.
Earlier in the day, a police source said Schweich had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The police source said Schweich's wife was in another room of their house when she heard her husband making phone calls, followed by a single gunshot.
He was 54.
His death was confirmed by his office early Thursday afternoon, just hours after Schweich had requested an interview with reporters for the Post-Dispatch and the Associated Press at his Clayton home later in the day.
Before that interview could take place, Schweich was taken to a St. Louis-area hospital, for what his office initially described only as "a medical situation" that occurred at his home.
Okay so he called reporters for an interview, subject unknown, and then before that could take place he allegedly dies of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Let the wild speculation begin!

A few years back, Little Matty Blunt [our famed Sen.Roy Blunt's son] just left town a few days after declaring he'd run for a second term as gov. Just took off, quit the race, maybe finished out the few months left in his term [not clear about this] and virtually disappeared. No one knows [well, someone knows…] what happened. Tom Schweich was renowned for his straightforward, forthright approach to governing, a Republican that real Republicans can't afford to lose. Who knows that happened. It's hard to believe that a few religious slurs by a party idiot would prompt a suicide. Very hard to believe.

At this time in the reporting, this guy was so humiliated because his opponent accused him of being a Jew, he just had to shoot himself. Republicans!

I wrote the original post, and I know what I'm talking about. You see, I'm Jewish; so that must mean that all of you must be ignorant and politically correct. There's no value judgement placed on commenting about how someone looks, unless all of you place some negative value on looking Jewish!
