In a study published in the journal Nature, researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory used eleven years of measurements from specialized instruments at sites in Alaska and Oklahoma to analyze the source of energy fluctuations, confirming that it’s carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels that’s causing warming — and not water vapor, changes in the sun or someone tampering with the data to make it look like global warming is worse than it is, as some have claimed.
“We see, for the first time in the field, the amplification of the greenhouse effect because there’s more CO2 in the atmosphere to absorb what the Earth emits in response to incoming solar radiation,” lead author Daniel Feldman explained in a statement.
“Numerous studies show rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, but our study provides the critical link between those concentrations and the addition of energy to the system, or the greenhouse effect.”
It’s important to be clear that by no means did the Berkeley researchers need to do this in order to prove that carbon dioxide is trapping heat in the atmosphere: as physicist and climate expert Ken Caldeira explained to the San Francisco Chronicle, “the underlying physics is robust and was never in question.” Climate scientist Andrew Dessler told the Associated Press that the work is somewhat similar to using a falling rock to confirm gravity.
This of course will not convince the James Inhofe's and Sarah Palin's of the world, or anybody else who are relying on dollars from fossil duel companies and the Koch brothers, but it should be enough to shut down Uncle Albert at the family's next Thanksgiving dinner.
It is time to stop suggesting that there are two sides to this issue, and it is time, well actually its several decades past time, for us to do something very serious about this problem.
OMG! Put on your adult Depends!

O/T but about science: Philomena Cunk's Moments of Wonder Ep 3 EVOLUTION
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te5-SJzylZc
Philomena Cunk (played by Diane Morgan) interviews scientists in a series, Moments of Wonder. In this one she wants to know (inter alia) "If we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" Enjoy.
Funny. Her interview style is similar to the old (sob) Stephen Colbert show.

ReplyDeleteThere was a story in the local news yesterday about how we've broken all sorts of records for low temperatures and monthly snow totals here in western NY.
ReplyDeletePredictably, there were numerous comments on the online story about how this OBVIOUSLY disproves climate change which is clearly just a hoax perpetuated by the Kenyan Muzzlin Usurper in the White House.
One more time for the slow learners: weather DOES NOT equal climate
Sigh...
So true, and those who believe so are simply showing their ignorance. I find it outrageous we continue to believe as if they have a say. No more. Yesterday there was an article in the NY Times about Russians buying up buildings in New York for residences as a way to escape the perfidy of the Russian economy. One photo stood out as a sign of the times. Looking out a window of a many million dollar residence Central Park was bathed in disgustingly polluted air. I am amazed even the rich are so out of touch (or the world is a lot more environmentally destroyed than I can even imagine) that they are unable to see how degraded the atmosphere has become in the mid latitudes. And, they are willing to pay upwards of $37 million to look over a polluted city.
DeleteIt's freaking cold on the east coast, but the rest of the planet is hotter than normal. This includes Alaska.

DeleteA friend of mine moved last fall from here in Rochester to Kodiak. She's posted pictures of her kids playing outside and you can see the ground. We haven't seen it here in weeks and won't for a long time to come. We usually get thaws between snowstorms but it's been consistently VERY cold for weeks and the snow just continues to pile up.
Meanwhile my nephew in Idaho was playing baseball outside in short sleeves 2 weeks ago.
Well, if the right wing Supreme Court we have has anything to say about it, we're gonna have more wingnut influence happening...
ReplyDeleteThis Supreme Court Case Could Make Elections Even More Undemocratic
In a reversal of the usual worries about political influence on electoral map-making, the Supreme Court is being asked to let raw politics play an even bigger role in the drawing of congressional district boundaries.
The court hears argument Monday in an appeal by Republican lawmakers in Arizona against the state's voter-approved independent redistricting commission for creating the districts of U.S. House members. A decision striking down the commission probably would doom a similar system in neighboring California, and could affect districting commissions in 11 other states.
The court previously has closed the door to lawsuits challenging excessive partisanship in redistricting, or gerrymandering. A gerrymandered district is intentionally drawn, and sometimes oddly shaped, to favor one political party.

I honestly believe she does not love her children. Anybody who thinks this is a hoax is in serious denial abut the fate of the human race. If we can make a difference we should be doing it all weapons in our arsenal to combat global warming should be in effect. NOW. We should ignore idiots like Sarah Palin and simply advance the effort as soon as possible.

Facts, reason, and logic will not sway the AGW deniers. They are believers. They believe the 'it's just a hoax' message the big energy shills are putting out because they trust the messengers. Big tobacco did the same thing with smoking and lung cancer of course. These folks are truly incapable of critical thought, they need someone they trust to tell them what to believe. Even a dimwitted and uneducated shyster like Palin can fool the RW ignorati.
ReplyDeleteWhatever, when their houses are underwater they'll finally understand. Just like all of the coastal damage from Superstorm Sandy, the coastal dwellers will scream and cry and try to do anything to rebuild and then it will take but another stronger storm to convince them to abandon ship and face reality. The Government isn't going to keep bailing out those who live in harm's way.

ReplyDeleteI think it is already too late. You in the Arctic are getting warmer. This leads to permafrost melting and all that methane, not only on land, but the methane hydrates in the ocean being released. The sinkholes that have happened up in Alaska due to melting permafrost will be the least of your problems. In Siberia, scientists think that the huge craters that have been turning up in large numbers are due to underground methane explosions as the permafrost melts. And of course, the more methane that gets released, the hotter it gets and the cycle just gets quicker.
ReplyDeleteHere on the East Coast of the U.S, the Gulf Stream current is slowing down. This is due to a decrease in the salinity of the ocean as Greenland, Iceland and even Antarctica melt. Scientists just days ago released the results of a study showing sea levels in Portland Maine actually rose five inches from 2009 to 2010. All signs point to rising sea levels every year along the East Coast (and world wide). And it is all happening a lot quicker than scientists predicted just a few years ago.
It might soon be time for Katie to bar the door.
The old joke about oceanfront property in Arizona may not be a joke too much longer. Except it won't be from an earthquake - it will be from ocean levels rising!
