There are now 19 states where white Christians are no longer the majority.

Courtesy of Think Progress:

A new study reports that white Christians, long understood to be the primary shapers of American politics and culture, are rapidly losing their majority status across the country — even in traditionally conservative states.

Earlier this week, Jonathan Merritt of the Religion News Service dug into data from the American Values Atlas, a website unveiled late last year by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) that aggregates polling information on the political opinions, values, and religious affiliations of Americans. The wealth of data is a lot to sift through, but Merritt pointed to a striking revelation: white Christians, once the majority in virtually every major population area in America, are now a minority in 19 states.

 .....

Taken together, the PRRI data and Merritt’s analysis highlight several areas where white Christians are now the minority. Some states on this new list are fairly predictable, such as Hawaii, the only majority-minority state in America, and California, home to two of the top five most-diverse counties in the nation.

“Hawaii and California have the smallest white Christian populations of any state—20 percent and 25 percent, respectively,” Joanna Piacenza, an editor and communications associate at PRRI, noted in a blog post.

But the list of states also revealed some surprises, and included several conservative, historically-white, church-going “red states” such as Texas, Georgia, and Louisiana.

Well you know this news is going to freakout the Fox News watchers and racists in the country. (Assuming of course those are two different categories.)

Personally I am really thrilled to see Alaska listed among the states where the white Christian demographic is in the minority.

However I know full well that the money and the power remains in the hands of the white Christians. But perhaps those days will someday come to an end as well.

Maybe it's just me, but I fail to see how being a white Christian in the minority (Oregon) threatens me in any way. I go about my business with no problem, respect others' opinions, and treat others the way I would like to be treated.

But that's why I'm an IM groupie and shun the pee pond.

I see it and I see it very clearly. Because the extreme right is controlling our government, by basing laws on their beliefs and not the constitution. Such as stupid personhood laws for zygotes and feti and destroying our education system by controlling what school books are used, little things like that.

When you put it like that, I can't help but agree, 7:14 AM, which is what I don't get about the likes of the pee pond. They preach and PREACH over constitutional conservatism, but yet have no problem calling for a convention of states to change what they don't like. Mad as wet hens they are over President Obama "fundamentally transforming" America. Who's transforming??

I didn't read the study, but I wonder if their results are based on church attendance, or were derived from a poll asking individuals what religious affiliation (if any) that they are.

I live in Oregon, and I question that the minority here are not Christian. There are a LOT of churches and most are non-denominational fundamentalist, hallelujah Jesus churches. Also, a lot of kids are home-schooled, and I'm sure they are home-churched also.

It's worth going just for the Single White Female picture, where she copies the hair and clothing of various people. I also liked the question about what her unemployed, uneducated adult children will do when the funds dry up.

$arah will forever be the butt of jokes and only has herself to blame. The Joan Rivers of politics, she's not. She was told publically after Iowa that she's done but, as her nemesis Nicole Wallace said, who should know after dealing with her in '08, she'll always have her support group because people really ARE that stupid.

If there's any one photo that indicates Sarah's mental illness, it's the Single White Female picture. How crazy is someone who repeatedly copies the person they are attacking? I find it very offensive that Sarah mocked Gabby Giffords.

Gabby Giffords and the blood libel speech was it for me. Nothing, NOTHING she could say after that could ever redeem her.

She can say she didn't cause it after her gun sights, excuse me, (cough) "surveyor marks," meme, but she did...and the FUC_Michael Moore with a smiling Dakota just shows how low life these people are.

Remember Gabby saying, "please don't" before she was maimed? That's the Wasilla bitch and her tribe. Get in our way, we will take you DOWN.

Well of course they are freaking out! I'm originally from Fla. and Ga - the land of mega churches on every freaking corner - even without having to worry about property taxes, that lifestyle is pricey and they gotta keep the dollars rolling in!

Being an Anglo and living in southern New Mexico, I've always been a minority. Love the culture here. However, church going Hispanics are of the norm here, and many are just as conservative and rabid as any white Christian.

Yes, but the Hispanics have to be educated to understand in New Mexico (if they don't already!) that the Republicans do not support those of color and especially women!

They probably are majority Catholic. Do they vote? That will also be very important!

Well, just as in other countries where people of color are the majority, unless they get their shit together (i.e., vote for their best interests, elect leadership that separates church from state and believes in investing in "the people", organize their efforts, and promote their impact with a united voice/messaging), then none of this will matter.

Yes, hopefully, they listened to President Obama's speech in Selma yesterday because he put an emphasis on voting.

It is up to the rest of us to help get the vote out in 2016 and that is my plan. All colors and to make sure they have the proper ID for their particular state.

Republicans have not be given majority control anywhere in the country...U.S. Congress, State and City levels!

It is up to all of us to VOTE and help others - it's WE as President Obama indicated in that speech!

And THAT'S why they hate him, because not only is he "colored" but he's right and beats them at every turn.

Unfortunately, *white* Christians might be in a minority in those states, but *Christians* are still the majority religion. Non-white Christians can be just as wacky as white Christians.

Just because they may still be the majority does NOT give them the right to change the Constitution, that they profess to love and adhere to, which unequivocally states that there will be NO state religion.

Your non-white comment, Archie, reminds me of the video of $arah getting the demons prayed out of her in that service. Yeah, we see how THAT turned out! LOL

I think the study is addressing Protestants rather than Christians. Texas has a large Catholic population. Catholics are, of course, Christians. I can see where Protestants, also Christians, are now in the minority.

Love the fact we are becoming 'less and less' Christian within the USA! Thought it was happening and it is - far more than I had anticipated. Yea, Alaska!!!

The Republicans are going to have a 'shit fit' over this - the old, white, moon-bellied ones anyway! Younger Americans will be taking over the U.S. Congress and the emphasis on 'christians' and 'religion' will decrease substantially!

America will change 'naturally' into an 'unchristian' nation!

And the beauty is that those moon-bellied old farts will have no one to blame but themselves. Not that they'll ever have the guts and smarts and humility to do so.

I have two neighbors who are white christians. One of them told me that she thinks the severe drought here in Texas is because the End Times are upon us. I said I think it's because of global climate change. She said she didn't believe in that stuff. The other one commented on the death of another neighbor, she said "when they found him he had already started turning to ashes". Ooooo-kay! IMHO, I think there might have been a strong smell indicates his passing long before he "started turning to ashes". The ignorance and gullibility is staggering.
