The new chair of the powerful Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee secured a vote Thursday afternoon in the U.S. Senate on a controversial proposal to sell off America’s national forests and other public lands.
U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) amendment, which passed by a vote of 51 to 49, is now part of the Senate’s nonbinding budget resolution. The proposal would support and fund state efforts — which many argue are unconstitutional — to seize and sell America’s public lands. These include all national forests, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, historic sites, and national monuments.
Murkowski’s amendment, which would need further legislation to become law, follows a similar proposal from House Natural Resources Committee Chair Rob Bishop (R-UT) to spend $50 million of taxpayer dollars to fund the sale or transfer of U.S. public lands to states.
The land grab proposals in Congress this year appear to echo the calls of outlaw rancher Cliven Bundy, best known for his armed standoff with federal officials last year, who has infamously refused to recognize the authority of the federal government, including over public lands.
You know just when you think that perhaps Lisa Murkowski is one of the better Republicans she does something like this to remind you that there ARE no better Republicans.
The reasoning Murkowski is using to push this vote is that the government could sell the public lands to pay down the deficit. A deficit by the way that the President has already reduced by approximately two thirds without selling any of our national forests to do so.
No if you know Lisa Murkowski, and sadly I do, she is only thinking of those sweet oil company profits and how nice a portion of them will look inside her campaign coffers the next time she runs for office.
She is, after all, her father's daughter.
I'm from about as far from Alaska as one can be in the US, and even I think Ms. Murkowski is expecting some sweet dollars from oil companies over this.
ReplyDeleteTeddy Roosevelt Wept.
MarvinM
My first thought was of TR too. This is so shortsighted and so very sad.
DeleteTR is one of our better Presidents. Today, he is rolling in his grave.
DeleteThe recent Ted Cruz infomercial that briefly highlighted Mount Rushmore craftily left out both Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The two Republicans you should be proud of, Mr. Cruz!
DeleteExactly, 12:40! I wonder how much, or how little, money it took for the oil companies to persuade Murkowski to whore herself out to them.
DeleteQuit Weeping and get tweeting! I can't believe the one source that G quoted is the ONLY one reporting this! This includes all National Parks, Wildlife refuges, Historical monuments, All PUBLIC AND OURS! NOT LISA M TO LORD OVER AND GREEDILY SELL!!! Tomorrow FLOOD POTUS office with calls to Veto. Also to Dem Senators trying to stop the land grab!! If this goes through...well say good bye to America as we know it.
DeleteI had thought these greedy bastards could not put their claws on the NPS and our National Monuments and lands. But they can and its led by a VILE LISA MURKOWSKI! THE ONLY WORSE WOMAN IN AK IS PALIN AND THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING, THAT IS NOT NICE...
Lisa Murkowski? Is that his stage name. Coulda sworn that was a drag queen in the picture.
DeleteThe irony meter just broke. How can Lisa who constantly rails against "federal overreach" not see how egregious a federal overreach this would be if passed (won't be passed - it will be vetoed if it makes is past the house). Selling off America's public lands for private profit. Uh huh. And I bet she's got a bridge she'd like to see us too. Oh, no, that's Gov. Chris Christy's domain.
ReplyDeleteThere's a word for her. That word is whore. And I say this is as someone who abhors sexist language. But there is no way around it - she is a whore for big oil.
ReplyDeleteShe's her father's daughter alright... but this is not going to work...Alaska just sold $4million in stocks about 2 weeks ago...for what Lisa? Why didn't daddy do anything to help when that huge trust fund was stolen from the birthright owner... oh, he was skimming from the top? Too late to run now baby girl...all fall down? Yeah...sounds right to me, lol...oops, look out, here it comes...I can breath when I stop laughing...face wipe...
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your comments for a while now. I've got friends of friends who know the Penneys, Murky's etc. I know there was BS that they were all intertwined in. Lisa loved to distance herself from Palin, but we know the distance was only superficial. If the Palin curse finally karma kick backs and gets all these folks together under one big FBI / IRS grab- well that day will be a GREAT fucking day in this house!
Deletehedgewytch1:54 PM
DeleteMe too!!!

DeleteIt was actually $4 billion in stocks, not $4 million (you dropped 3 zeros...that makes a big difference) and it was sold by the state in an attempt to cover budget shortfalls. If you continue to get the small details wrong we will find you to be an off the rails crazy person barking at the moon.
Here are the details:

MarvinM is right: Teddy Roosevelt would be turning in his grave. And not merely at this, but at every aspect of today's republican party.
ReplyDeleteOn another topic, did you know that this website's domain name, IM, is for sale? At least, that's what THIS website suggests – UNLESS they publish this kind of thing for every other website, lol: http://www.buydomains.com/lander/theimmoralminority.com?domain=theimmoralminority.com&utm_source=theimmoralminority.com&utm_medium=click&utm_campaign=TDFS-OO-BDLander&traffic_id=TDFS-OO-BDLander&traffic_type=tdfs
One final note: There is a typo on the home page of this website that really should be changed. Trig's last name is spelled Palin, not Paling. See Questions in the Middle of the Night link on the left side of the page.
She is one unattractive woman and watching her speech patterns have always made me nervous!
ReplyDeleteI'm an Alaskan and have NEVER cast my vote in her favor. She ran into big trouble during her last election cycle and suspect she will be demolished in her next go around. I'm sure the big bucks from outside Alaska will be used for her next election!
She doesn't speak for the majority of Alaskans or Alaska! It's no wonder the U.S. Congress has such a low approval rating when you have the likes of her serving!
She and Palin are both those uncomfortable looking skeletal-faced women with giant man-jaws. They both look like they have too much testosterone and are just terrible to look at, plus they are both fundy conservatards; peas in a pod, those two, right down to their manly demeanors. I can't believe that either one was able to have kids, I'd not expect either one of them to have working female parts, given their manly looks.
DeleteNEWSFLASH! Its just not ALASKA it for the Whole USA!! Republican theft! Next they will be sell us worker bees off, or right they already do! Well our NP, WR National Monuments are ALL we have left, and these bastards are stealing it and selling for profit, them not us (except you lucky Alaskans and your grifter fund) Anyway all of America's Nationals parks up for sale thanks to our treasonous /greedy/vile/R/Senators.

ReplyDeleteAt TPM there's this story
"Michele Bachmann Compares Obama To 'Deranged' Germanwings Pilot"
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/michele-bachmann-obama-deranged-pilot
Under the extremely strict (and long since sunsetted) Fairness Doctrine, Mrs. B is soliciting the opinions of others as to what media character we'd like to compare her to.
I, of course, have long compared her and her ilk to the screechy Chicken Lady of "Freaks" fame. If you're unfamiliar with this character begin your edification with the following video at marker 2:07. Next, watch the entire <3 min video. And finally seek out and watch online the entire once-banned Tod Browning's 1932 horror classic.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! SHE'S A CHICKEN LADY!!!
I’d bet if we ever went back to the Fairness Doctrine, Fox News would quickly go out of business, or go bankrupt. It would also go completely against their obvious corporate goal of promoting conservative ideology, and would destroy their ability of lying to their viewers because they would have to counter their own lie with the truth.
DeleteBut, the greatest effect it would have on FOX if the Fairness Doctrine ever came back, is that it would actually give some creditability and truth to their slogan “Fair and Balance”. That is something I don’t believe we’ll ever see as long as Ailes and Murdoch are at the helm.
are you referring to this video?

Absolutely disgusting!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat are they going to do when all those foreigners come and buy up all the land? The Chinese flag flying from the Washington Monument, Chisel some dictator into Mt Rushmore.
These republicans never see beyond their own pockets and they call themselves patriots, willing to sell public land to the lowest bidder.
Anonymous 1:22, you are so right on. And what if it's a Chinese front group, so the righties don't even know it's the Chinese who are buying? Or a Saudi front group that then turns around and drills for SAUDI-OWNED oil on one of our national parks??? The GOP would be just fine and dandy with either of those two situations . . . . UNTIL a media uproar ensued. And even then, they'd try to weasel around justifying their position. They are truly a group without conscience, which is the dictionary definition of sociopaths.
Deleteso is this a done deal ?!?
ReplyDeleteNo! Thank god!
DeleteAnonymous2:45 PM
DeleteNo! Thank god!

Why how do we stop or it has been stopped? Why is this not a "done dill"?
Sheesh. I am so tired of people in Alaska going off about federal overreach. The feds are usually the only thing that stands between we the people who own the federal lands and the horde of limited government types who live to rape and pillage the land in the name of free-market values. Remember in Game Change when Sarah Palin thought the federal reserve was The Feds? OMG, that was all the insight I needed into her limited government Alaska roots. She epitomizes the new John Bircher perfectly. Yet, in Bristol Bay it is the EPA that has stood up for the fish, not Alaska. DNR is bought and sold already.
ReplyDeleteWell said, thank you.
DeleteYet you had gov palin who used ak money to pay veterans whose benefits were cancelled and then went after the pentagon to replenish ak coffers.
ReplyDeleteBut whatever. Lisa is her father, a republican in stereotype.
There are republicans who are decent, selfless people. Don't characterize a person by the party affiliation or the Ted cruzs
Lisa Murkowski has already supported bills that will alienate the people who put her into power. Anything she does in the future won't undo that.
ReplyDeleteI said recently that I figure she isn't planning on running again because she will have a tough time getting reelected no matter how many deadbeat wingnuts run against her.
The oil companies couldn't get her reelected last time and they won't get her reelected next time. I don't think the people of Alaska will even cross the road to vote for her after some of the teabagger things she has done since 2012.
ReplyDeleteFuck her. I feel so sorry for all the folks that were dumb enough to write her name in. I left that particular item blank but now we're stuck with her, probably as long as we've been stuck with Don Young. Begich won't run against her as he has a nice cushy civilian job making a lot more money than he ever did in the thankless post he held as Senator from AK.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be Murkowski and Sullivan for the foreseeable future, get used to it, and thanks a lot to you dumbasses that wrote her name in.
2:32 PM I think you could be wrong on this - more and more Alaskans are getting sick and tired of the Republicans running our state. I know that many of my friends did not vote for Dan Sullivan or Murkowski and won't ever.
DeleteEverything the Republicans do is creating havoc on the state and national levels. They are a mean bunch and Independents and Democrats need to be filling their positions.
I really do think it is going to occur in 2016! We just need to get the voters out to assure our positions!
I miss the good old days when politicians were at least embarrassed about being corporate whores.
ReplyDeleteNow they use it as a campaign slogan, but the stupid low-information voters still put them back in office again and again and again...
Her ass needs to get kicked out of office and all the way back to where ever she lived while Daddy boy was runnin' the state. Her bill is straight from the ALEC playbook. The one she reads as she clipclops six paces behind Miss McConnell.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this amendment that Murkowski slid into the budget bill. Very slimy and she hoped no one would notice. All Alaskans who are against this, please pass this on to your friends and let her know your opinion. Thanks Gryphen
ReplyDeleteMurkowski is proof lizard people really do exist.
