Baltimore City riots. The day after.

Courtesy of CNN:

Charred cars and buildings. Hospitalized police officers. Looted and damaged businesses. No school, because it might not be safe for children to go outside.

That was the stark reality Tuesday after a night of riots, fires and heartbreak in Baltimore, parts of which looked more like a war zone than a place where people live, work and play.

"Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs who -- in a very senseless way -- are trying to tear down what so many have fought for," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

At least 15 officers were wounded in the unrest, six of them seriously, the city's police commissioner said. Getting them healthier is the first goal. Another is making sure that they're not joined in local hospitals by others -- be they more law enforcement officers or civilians -- in further unrest.

There were nearly 200 arrests, 144 vehicle fires and 15 structure fires in Baltimore during the unrest that began Monday, said Howard Libit, the city's director of strategic planning and policy.

More than 500 National Guard members are in Baltimore on Tuesday morning with "hundreds more on the way," the Maryland National Guard reports.

The finger pointing and blame has already started with conservatives mostly blaming the mayor and liberals talking about police injustice and a community that feels desperate and enraged over the death, and the lack of information about the death, of Freddie Gray.

The violence and property destruction got so bad that even the Crips and Bloods got together to call for an end to the riot.

The riots actually erupted on the day that newly confirmed AG Loretta Lynch was sworn in, which means she has to hit the ground running it seems.

Her first response to the violence will of course be closely scrutinized by her conservative detractors:

Lynch met Monday evening with President Barack Obama to discuss the riots in Baltimore. The meeting was not called specifically as a result of the situation in Baltimore, the White House said, but Lynch told Obama she'd be monitoring the situation there.

"As our investigative process continues, I strongly urge every member of the Baltimore community to adhere to the principles of nonviolence," Lynch said in a statement. "In the days ahead, I intend to work with leaders throughout Baltimore to ensure that we can protect the security and civil rights of all residents. And I will bring the full resources of the Department of Justice to bear in protecting those under threat, investigating wrongdoing, and securing an end to violence."

Today the President had this to say:

"There's no excuse for the kind of violence that we saw yesterday. It is counterproductive," Obama said at a press conference from the White House. "When individuals get crowbars and start prying open doors to loot, they're not protesting. They're not making a statement. They're stealing. When they burn down a building, they're committing arson. And they're destroying and undermining businesses and opportunities in their own communities. That robs jobs and opportunity from people in that area."

My feeling at this point is if the investigation into the death of Freddy Gray does not end with indictments of at least some police officers, that we will see more violence like this in the near future.

I think MLK said it best.

By the way here are some photos of white people rioting over really important things like sports.

Donald "Dandy Don" Trump claims if he were president he could stop the rioting in Baltimore in 1 hour. And that's without resorting to the use of tactical nuclear weapons. You take the kid gloves off, libtards, and it looks like The Donald could wrap this up in about 10 minutes and provide millions of jobs for the removal of radioactive waste and the building of post-blast lead-lined luxury highrise condos at Ground Zero.

Isn't it about time we gave this chucklehead a chance? Could Trump be a worse president than Barack Obama? What's the worst that could happen if a proud serial bankruptee and celebrity blowhard was elected - or appointed - president?

    These are not rhetorical questions!!

    ANSWER THEM!!!!

SHOULD DONALD TRUMP BE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD AND BEYOND???

No one is sure, really, but it is well known that Sarah Palin wishes she had one.

Now to answer your other not-rehetorical questions:

And NO there should not be amnesty for the rioters, no one thinks that, read Obama's statement that Gryphen quoted in this post.

Yes, it's wrong and lawless and totaly counterproductive ...

But this rioting is also JUSTIFIED and America's white ruling class has to somehow understand that.

Every other week, African-American men are being murdered by police who go entirely unpunished -- even when video later turns up that exposes the enormity of their lies.

There's this racist justification that the victims somehow "deserved it" -- that by not complying, resisting, running away, etc. they DESERVED to die??

Yeah, well, that's just complete and utter delusional, bullshit mindfuckery.

Investigations done all across this country have proven that YES, cops DO frequently target African-Americans for unjustified detention and illegal searches -- not to mention outright racist harrassment.

IMHO, there is a mind-set among the cops who do the killing and likely shared by anyone subhuman enough to applaud their efforts: that the black men they kill aren't human at all but are just another kind of "big game" for them to bag ... that, when safely alone with those who share their sick views, they BRAG and LAUGH about the innocent men they've tortured and killed in the most vile, degrading terms.

I live about 10 blocks from one of the epicenters of this kind of rioting. I've seen the night sky lit up with fire that's consumed stores I frequented. I've sat in my home, scared to realize that, being white, it was was not a good idea for me to leave my home (especially since I get around on a bike).

I've ridden around the day after and seen the destruction, the shopkeepers sweeping up, some crying over their loss. And I've also gotten seering looks from some blacks who've come to view ALL whites as the enemy.

So, YES I HATE the riots ... but I also understand them.

Truthfully, I feel very sorry for the black kids that live in that portion of Baltimore. Some of them protesting/rioting have supposedly just graduated from high school in an area where no jobs are available and there is documented proof the kids have been treated poorly and badly by the police force! Their police force has already paid substantial amounts of money in suits that have been filed against them.

I see civil unrest coming across the nation - another all out civil war where, this time, whites and others will be fighting WITH the blacks and against whites and others. What is wrong with our country?

Police folks needs to be held accountable for their awful actions and perhaps some of this unrest would stop or slow down.

The dirty white cops keep getting away with murder and beatings against the black and brown kids/young adults. That too is being proven, time and time again, with the videos that you been published.

We are one very sick nation! And, an embarrassment to the world. And, it is NOT the fault of President Obama as conservatives love to push. It's their fault!!!!!

Correction Gryphen, 15 officers "allegedly" were injured. We have no idea if they were really injured on the job or not, Probably injured because they were doing something illegal.
But I see you missed putting in your article just how many times that thug police force has been accused of killing or causing injury to the good citizens of Baltimore. Just the type of reporting you shamed a week ago.

    ReplyDelete
  12. In what way does preying upon your neighbors stick it to the cops? What does stealing from your neighborhood businesses do to solve the problems with the police?

In what way does breaking into the local hair salon and stealing all of the hair extensions and jewelry or breaking into the liquor store next door and stealing everything on the shelves in any way relate to the injustice done to Freddie Grey?

If anything, it provides fodder for the police to point and say "See? We are right to be afraid and take steps to protect ourselves."

All of this destruction and violence just serves to justify the position of the police and reinforce their fears for their personal safety.

And that is, I believe, the root cause of this. Fear. Fear for their lives. Fear for being criticized for NOT doing their jobs to lock up criminals and protect citizens before something happens. So in their zeal to prevent and their fear something might happen to them while they do it, they have escalated a defensive stance that has quickly become proactive attack. Add in some callousness and even a little bigotry and there you have it.

These riots do nothing to mitigate that and everything to negatively reinforce it.

BTW I'm sure some Crips and Bloods did get together eventually to try to stop it. But I'm sure there were more than a few out there profiting from the chaos and taking advantage of the looting.

Those teenage thugs that were some of the first may have been gang members or wannabee gang members. Thinking this was some sort of initiation they could use for street cred.

    2. I get that. I understand the anger.

I don't get making war on your neighbors and the local businesses you depend on and have done nothing to you.

I don't get destroying your neighborhood so that then you have no place to go to get your meds or shop for groceries.

      It's just...childish. It's like an adult tantrum.

It does nothing to the police or to make a point. If anything, it looks to the world like the police need to crack down on a population that has no self-control or respect for property or life. That is exactly what the police are doing; showing no self-control or respect for life. In what way does acting worse than the police make your point?

Take your Fox News(cough) hateful fuckery and waddle off somewhere else.
There has been systemic brutality by the Baltimore PD for a while.
    http://data.baltimoresun.com/news/police-settlements/

    And this:
“The officers who were directly involved because of our Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights we have yet to fully engage those officers, and we will get to the bottom of it,” the mayor said. “I am determined to make sure that we have as full investigation and we follow all of the rules and procedures so if there is a finding of wrongdoing that we have done everything possible to protect policy and procedures so we can hold those individual accountable.”
    https://news.vice.com/article/police-officer-bill-of-rights-blamed-for-baltimores-information-blackout-in-case-of-freddie-grays-severed-spine

    Do I condone rioting/looting?

Do I understand the pent up anger?

There was a mother who recognized her son in a mask rioting in the streets. She tracked him down like a blood hound and pulled him home by the ear, oh to be a fly on their wall when that door closed.
The thing about riots is they accomplish nothing, nada, zip and harm innocent people who tried their best to make a community work, now CVS, where especially the elderly, depend on for household goods and medicines. We hear cute terms like "food challenged", but after something like this, what grocer, pharmacist, etc. would open a shop there? These kids are pumped on pack mentality and cutting off their noses to spite their face.
The MLK quote brought a tear to my eyes. We need positive role models, teachers, and professionals to teach these kids non violent conflict resolution and to step back and see the big picture.

5:30 PM, I don't think she was disciplining him. I think she was out of her mind with worry because she knows how easily he could have been killed. Imagine every time you say goodbye to your teenager you don't know if you'll ever see him or her again.

As for punishment, teenage brains have an awful growth period where risk-taking behavior is quite normal. My own son apparently train-surfed in his teens, which I didn't find out until he was about 30. Is that a dickhead thing to do or what?

And don't try to tell me that either of your parents knew everything YOU did as a teen. Or even much of anything you did.

That kid was doing a dickhead thing with all of his dickhead buddies. It's not like he killed or raped anyone.

As for your crack about deadbeat dads? The lack of a father doesn't mean a child doesn't get punished. IT MEANS THAT A YOUNG BLACK MAN DOESN'T HAVE ANOTHER MAN TO TEACH HIM STRATEGIES FOR STAYING ALIVE WHEN HE VENTURES FROM HOME. YOU GOT THAT?

I'm expecting plenty of 'strategic' violence from the local LE militias wherever the opportunities present themselves. How else are they going to get all of those new killing toys? It doesn't matter if they never learn how to use them correctly, police departments have been known to weed out potential recruits who are too intelligent to be cops, and loading up untrained half-wits with a bunch of lethal weapons is the American Way.

You betcha there will be plenty of violence.
