Here are some tweets from yesterday's rally in South Carolina.

Personally I think the best image to convince people it is time to get rid of the confederate flag, is this one:

Here is more about the protest.

Ted Cruz said Saturday that the Confederate flag flying in front of their statehouse is “a question for South Carolina” to decide.

He is not alone. Marco Rubio said the same: “This is an issue that they should debate and work through and not have a bunch of outsiders going in and telling them what to do.” Scott Walker and Carly Fiorina also feel it is an issue for South Carolina alone to decide.

Funny. I seem to recall South Carolina trying to decide that issue in 1861, when on April 12 they opened fire on Fort Sumter, inaugurating the Civil War.

Also, as I recall, they lost. The flag they waved at the end was white.

That should have been an end to that affair.

By the vote of an all-white legislature, a Confederate flag was raised once again above the South Carolina statehouse in 1962. In 2000, another vote removed it, and placed a square battle flag – oddly, the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia – over a monument to Confederate dead. This is the flag that is, in the wake of the Charleston massacre, the point of contention between Democrats and Republicans.

RED OAK, Iowa - Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) dropped a few gun control jokes during his latest swing through Iowa, days after the shooting deaths of nine people in a Charleston, South Carolina, church.

"You know the great thing about the state of Iowa is, I'm pretty sure you all define gun control the same way we do in Texas -- hitting what you aim at," Cruz said at a town hall meeting Friday in Red Oak.

Too bad Cruz isn't rotting in Hell. Instead, he and his brother and sister Republicans are trying to consign all of us to a living hell of violence, servitude, imprisonment, disease and poverty.

Your comment was perfect until you added the last sentence I just quoted. I cannot stand Ted Cruz. He is truly vile, disgusting, stupid, etc., etc. BUT I can't condone calling for anyone to be shot in the face or shot at all. Shooting Cruz or shooting anyone isn't the answer to the gun violence in this country.

I live in Richmond VA. A woman who moved here from NY suggested having a Civil War reenactment and letting the Confederacy win so they can get over losing the war.

I am glad to see this protest.

Then you know nothing about southern history.
Churches, especially the southern baptist churches were basically chapters of the KKK. During segregation there was an explosion of private :christian" schools opening, so people could keep their all white schools. To this very day most of those "christian" schools are all white.
Open your eyes and quit pretending that "christian" is anything but something used as a tool to hide behind to hate and promote hate.

You do know there are still whites only churches in just about every town in the south don't you? How's that for your Christian stand against racism and white supremacy?

"Especially those who call themselves Christian."

Far too many of the RWNJ xtians live mostly by the old testament. In that ot somewhere is the idea that slavery is approved as long as those held in thrall were from the south lands. In other words, blacks.

I have many times accused people like that of not being christians. If they were, the ot would not be their mainstay for life guidelines and rules of punishment. Their life choices also are not what their so-called savior taught.

Sorry, "christians", but your lamentations about your faith are too obviously contradicted by your failure to ACT on what you were supposedly taught!

@ 9:52. I'm sure you mean when integration begin. In the era of segregation, there was no need for whites only private schools. Those occurred by law.

Yea, it's like flying the Nazi swastika flag in, say, New York. It's time to retire the stars and bars to a museum as President Obama suggested.

Ironically, as the swastika has been outlawed, what many refer to as the 'confederate flag' or the 'stars and bars' (the one flying at the SC statehouse, but actually neither- it's the battle flag of the army of northern (?) Virginia), has been co-opted by nazis in Germany to express their beliefs. So all those who claim it doesn't have racist undertones/meanings, how is that, again? Exactly what heritage are you celebrating?

I have always been uncomfortable with the rebel flag because of the way the KKK waves it around. My Dad who was born in 1905 used to say "That is not the flag of the Confederacy. Didn't know what he meant and then I read this: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/clyburn-confederate-battle-flag-article-1.2264751

Notice how united the nation was on 9/11. Congress sang God Bless America, and race and sex and econimic caste system had no bearing. Everyone pulled together and had one common enemy, and media encouraged solidarity.

Then, wham, everything went back to normal and a certain group slither back to the confererate days, now they don't feel threatened by outside forces. They are like the wind. They are so wrapped up in their little superior-minded duck ponds, they don't realize a majority of the nation are beyond the days of white man's glory. The rally in SC showed that, and the Fox News and companies shock the rest of the world with their aversion to minorities and true unity. Fox News is very similar to the propaganda methods of the Nazis.

That moment lasted for about a second or two. I don't know the motive. It may have be staged to give the illusion of united.

After that 9/11 was used for propaganda for Chaney tricksters and liars to recruit young men and women to die out of country instead of from a terrorist attack on American soil.

    3. Anonymous1:57 PM

After 9-11, anyone who dared criticized the US government in any way was branded a traitor. This is the kind of "solidarity" the media encouraged.

People who wore turbans or head scarves or who otherwise "looked" Middle Eastern were verbally or even physically abused.

And when Congress sang "God bless America," it made me sick to my stomach because I believe in the separation of Church and State and because it smacked of the same religious jingoism that allowed Al-Qaeda to recruit the men who became "martyrs" on that day.

How come dead soldiers return with the American flag draped over their coffins? Does South Carolina not recognize their service and sacrifice? Is the Military fighting for a united America or not?

This flag is not a heritage symbol. It is a rebellion symbol that makes these privileged few feel empowered by their ancestry, who were privileged wealthy traders who knew how to pillage, steal hostages from Africa and use them as free labour. They deny deny deny the shame of their ancestry, don't show a strand of shame, and continue to this day to shove it in African-American faces.

This flag does not represent any any humility laid out in the Bible. Their God is power, superiority, history, entitlement, pride of a flag's symbol of lording it over others, and damned if other don't fly that flag.

Both flags need to be preserved and remembered as symbols of shameful times in our history, when humans were at their most inhumane.

Neither one should be flown in a place of honor over a government building.

I can think of one way to put the flag of southern traitors to bed for good: every AA in the south (maybe everywhere) could buy boatloads (pun intended) of them and hang them everywhere. It wouldn't be for long because the racists would hide them away so fast it would make your head swim. The AAs could simply say that to them it represents the flag of their freedom. The freedom flag of African Americans!

Plus, it would have the side benefit of causing a lot of heads to explode...

OK, I just got another idea from an editorial in the L.A. Times by Jason Morgan Ward who writes about failed white supremacist states like Rhodesia and apartheid-era South Africa and the Confederate States of America. Those who oppose the continued worship of the flag of southern traitors can call it the flag of failed white supremacy. For opponents of racism to embrace a major symbol of racism and call it what it is, a FAILURE, will dissipate its power. Let 2/3 of the SC Legislature stand up there and defend the Flag of Failed White Supremacist States.

Thanks for this, Gryphen. I don't tweet nor facebook, so I'd have missed it. Former Governor "Don't Google My Name" Richard Santrowhisky, said he "believes" the flag matter should be left to the States to decide, not the Federal Government,
Seeing that murderer's photos tells me the Federal Government should decide. Seeing that flag above the Nation's flag at half mast is nauseating. We're ONE NATION and we have ONE FLAG.

Born a southerner. During my youth, the way my old grandma (etc.) talked, one would have though the Civil War just wrapped up weeks ago. Had 3 relatives fight for the CSA...One died, the other's names still reside on the Confederate Monument in Hayneville Alabama. Was taught how much worse blacks in the north were treated, how it was all about 'state's rights' and we were fighting an invading army bent on our destruction, just defending our homes. No denying there's much truth in that justification. But let's scratch the surface beneath the bumper sticker/soundbite bullshit. The HORRIBLE TRUTH behind the sorry, now romanticized sense of the 'lost cause' and the ensuing apologetics, is the F-A-C-T, that The Civil War war resulted in MORE AMERICANS being KILLED - than all other U.S. wars COMBINED (between 620,000 and 700,000 in a nation of 30 million. That would equate to over 6 MILLION DEAD today!!! Must be pretty HOT to not want to work in the fields THAT BAD... - By comparison, Vietnam, with a U.S. population of 200 million saw 58,000 Americans die). A TRAITOROUS ARMY was responsible for over 300,000 Northern Soldiers dying - not to mention as many/more in the south!!!! (Where less than HALF of those fighting even owned slaves: Poor man's fight - Rich Man's War...Sound familiar?) And for WHAT?!? 'STATE'S RIGHTS'? BULLSHIT!!!!!!!! - Only for a state's right to OWN SLAVES! Of the 11 Confederate states, fully 8 of their state constitutions SPECIFY their 'right to secede' for the SAKE OF SLAVERY!!!! VP of CSA spoke at length on 'the inferiority of the negro' etc. Thus, if anyone would find solace in blunting your intellect, at the point of admiration for southerner's genuine historics and sense of sacrifice, it would be a Civil War buff with direct CSA ties like ME!....Yet, how can one not help but wonder: 'If I was BLACK - How would THAT FLAG (etc, et al) make me feel?" Why do we treat our fellow human beings/Americans with such indifference, and an utter lack of empathy, merely for the sake of some false sense of machismo pride? Shit, in the middle-east, Sunni and Shia factions are STILL in death grips over their bullshit 'heritage not hate' from 1,000 years ago...Time to LET IT GO AMERICA!!!!
