The Ten Commandments monument must be removed from the grounds of the state Capitol, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.
Justices ruled 7-2 the monument must go because the state constitution prohibits the use of public property to directly or indirectly benefit a “church denomination or system of religion.”
The decision touched off a furor at the Capitol with several lawmakers calling for impeachment of the seven justices who voted in the majority.
Attorney General Scott Pruitt said he believes the court "got it wrong" and filed a petition for rehearing — a move that will at least delay removal of the monument.
If that fails, Pruitt called for changing the state constitution.
Boy religious zealots can certainly get all....zealotry now can't they? (Did I use that word right?)
In my opinion this is just part of the new direction this country is going which includes embracing the idea of gay marriage, rejecting hateful icons like the Confederate battle flag, and eschewing any co-mingling of religion and government.
And may I just say it is all about damn time.
G. Actually, I think you meant to say "can certainly get all....zealotty". Maybe you have an over-zealous spell checker.
ReplyDeleteThe word is simply "zealous", Trig.
ReplyDeleteThe state constitution cannot override the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: no establishment of religion.
ReplyDeletePutting up a Wiccan symbol, a Star of David, a copy of the Koran, a Buddhist temple, a cross (remember, the Ten Commandments are from the Old Testament), a Zoroastrian symbol, or any other religious relic violates the First Amendment. No religion supported by the government means no religion supported by the government,
There are plenty of tax-free churches and other houses of worship in which believers can erect their religious symbols.
Exactly, and they're no doubt aware that they can do whatever they want on their own church property and do as much of it as they want to do. The fact that they choose to act in the public space reveals that their motive has nothing to do with celebrating/honoring the ten commandments and everything to do with the age-old ritual of claiming territory that isn't theirs by planting their flag in the public space. They can't lose - their inevitable loss in court still gives them an opportunity to claim persecution, and that seems to be an important bonding ritual to them, you know, so they can get fired up for their next stupid fight, which they'll inevitably lose and claim persecution and bond for their next stupid fight, ...
DeletePoor fellows, it must be hard to live with so much persecution. Good thing they have a religion that brings them so much inner peace to sustain them through these tough times.
Depends - these justices are remnants of the sanity of last century that was moving that way, If we let the TeaTHUGS get in, not so much.
ReplyDeleteYou Libtards can't wait to see the destruction of churches so you can celebrate with your faggot friends.
ReplyDeletePosting the ten commandants is a billboard of everything the religious right does: worship other gods ($), lying, bearing false witness, adultery, and coveting (If I have have it, you want it)......

DeleteSounds like a great time, 3:21.
DeleteHow about keeping holy the Sabbath, 5:31? Do you ever see anybody shopping on Sundays anymore? Nah. How about taking the Lord's name in vain? When was the last time you heard anybody say goddammit? Probably not in a long time! Honor thy father and thy mother? A lot of mothers and fathers living in poverty with no help from their christian rightwing brethren. The motto of the crwb is I got mine; you're on your own!
DeleteObviously, the o.p. isn't operating with a full deck. No one's calling for churches to be destroyed. With all due respect, the bible nor any true Christian would mouth the "F" bomb about sexual preference, but then again, who can blame you for your jealousy and hate?
DeleteYou're not glitter bomb worthy, sorry.
O/T: my spouse just saw an interview with Kim Kardashian and apparently she's a firm believer in stricter gun control and is a supporter of President Obama. These ideas alone make her infinitely smarter than any Palin, dontcha think? Sorry that I don't have a link.
ReplyDeleteWould the people objecting agree to having something from the Koran, Torah, Hindu, Taoist,
ReplyDeleteBuddhist, Wiccan religions represented?
Somehow I think not.
As a Christian, I heartily endorse this decision. Amazed it has taken so long. MicMac
ReplyDeleteA tearful Indiana housewife lashed out at gays, liberals, Muslims, and “lukewarm” Christians in a wacky four-and-a-half-minute video posted on her Facebook page.
ReplyDeleteBecky Wegner Rommel interrupted some light housework to record her overwrought rant, quickly working herself into a lather over anyone who is insufficiently angry over same-sex marriage.
“This is a very sad day for a lot of Christ followers because today our government decided that everything that God created his church to be — as man, as woman, Adam and Eve — five justices decided that God was wrong,” Rommel said.
She said that God had always intended for marriage to be a union between one man and one woman, and she reminded President Barack Obama that Islamic extremists were, in fact, Muslims.
“The fact is, the God of the universe – He is the truth,” Rommel said, her voice rising to a shout. “Jesus Christ, not Mohammed, OK? Just like these Islamic extreme-lists — extremists, OK. They’re not just extremist, they’re Islamic, President Obama. Islamic extreme-lists.”
Rommel insisted she did not care what anyone thought about her beliefs, because she simply wanted them to hear the truth as she perceives it.
“I am so sick of people being lukewarm,” she said. “Are you serious? All these people saying they’re Christians are on the Facebook going, ‘Yay, I’m so proud of those justices’ – are you a Christian? Oh, my gosh – do you read the same Bible I read? OK, all I want to know is truth.”
“I don’t care if you’re my Facebook friend – but Christians are little Christs,” she continued.

This woman is truly unhinged.
The U.S. Episcopal Church voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to let gay couples wed in the denomination’s religious ceremonies, reinforcing its support for same-sex nuptials days after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide.
ReplyDeleteThe Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, became in 2012 the largest U.S. religious denomination to approve a liturgy for clergy to use in blessing same-sex unions, including gay marriages in states where they were already legal.
While some clergy and lay members disagreed with the proposal put before the Church’s triennial convention, held in Salt Lake City, the faith’s House of Deputies concurred with the House of Bishops, which overwhelmingly approved the measure in a separate vote on Tuesday.
“In 1976, the Church promised full and equal claim to LGBT members, and we’ve spent those years making that resolution a reality,” said the Rev. Susan Russell of the Diocese of Los Angeles.
“Today’s action is a huge step … toward a promised land of a Church that fully includes all its members,” she said.

ReplyDeleteSome alternatives: extremist, extreme, militant, dogmatic, radical, diehard; intolerant, single-minded, blinkered, inflexible, uncompromising, hardcore.
I think the word that evaded you was zealous. And yes they can show their zeal - and they don't care whether it makes sense or not. I'm convinced they intentionally choose fights they know they'll lose just to wallow their love of feeling persecuted. After all, what's more JEE-sus-y than being persecuted?

ReplyDeleteActually no, you didn't use it correctly. you used the noun and what you wanted was the adjective zealous. (no need to publish this comment)
ReplyDeleteSeparation of Church & State @ 3:21. Have a nice day, and go f--- yourself.
ReplyDeleteDarn. My comment never appeared. Oh well, it was off topic about a little family who once lived in Sodom. Maybe it's because I used Name/URL instead of Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteIf you read the 10 Commandment, it is like a laundry list of all the things the Palin family does not do.
ReplyDeleteHaving grown up in Oklahoma, I recall a capitol visit whereby I came over all disoriented and felt adrift. I experienced a sudden desire to break several of the commandments. And then lo and behold, there was the monument, a reminder to keep it together. I shudder to think what might have happened had that monument not been there.
ReplyDeleteThis has been an incredible month! Now, with this ruling, the separation of Church and State clearly wins over anything the state court has to say in the matter. Now, let's stop the not paying taxes balogna, and get that law passed.
