Senate Democrats blocked a proposal to defund Planned Parenthood Monday.
The Republican proposal failed to reach a 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a filibuster in a 53-46 vote that fell mostly along party lines.
Only two Democrats, Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana, backed the bill.
The proposal came after a series of undercover videos were released by the Center for Medical Progress, a group of anti-abortion activists, which showed Planned Parenthood staffers and others who work with the organization discussing fetal tissue donations. The legislation was sponsored by Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa.
Of course this is only the first volley in what will no doubt be a protracted battle.
And fuck Senators Joe Manchin and Joe Donnelly for caving to this bullshit attack.
Thankfully we have more courageous Democrats who refuse to be bullied into submission.
I think it might be about time to think about finding primary challengers in Indiana and West Virginia. What do you think?
Manchin is way more of a Rebublican than a Democrat. Always has been. He's a fraud.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Manchin should just declare himself a republican. He disses the president, votes socially conservative and has his head up the ass of coal. We'd be better off without him.
DeleteDo you notice all their silly little "sting" vids blow up in their faces! Planned Parenthood got mega funds after that "STING video"doom, doomdoom! They are so flippin stupid.
DeleteI'm surprised the old hoohah didn't spew that shit but I guess since no one was payin' she ain't sayin! LOL! A$$clowns all of 'em any of 'em!
So I suppose Teddy boi will try to shut down the gov now....?
Hillary Defends Planned Parenthood from ‘Full-On Assault on Women’s Health’
ReplyDeleteFollowing the release of a series of undercover videos shot at Planned Parenthood clinics that claim to catch the women’s health and abortion provider attempting to sell fetal organs, Hillary Clinton has released a new two minute video that defends the organization from what she describes as a “full-on assault on women’s health.”
Speaking directly into the camera, Clinton calls out GOP candidates like Scott Walker, Jeb Bush and Rick Perry for their efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. She also reminds voters that beyond just abortions, the organization also provides “life-saving preventive care” like cancer screenings, breast exams and birth control, to millions of women and men.
“When they attack women’s health, they attack America’s health,” she says. “And it’s wrong. And we’re not going to let them get away with it.”
“I’m proud to stand with Planned Parenthood,” Clinton concludes, definitively.
Last week, during an interview with the New Hampshire Union Leader, Clinton called the images from the undercover videos “disturbing” while at the same time reaffirming her support for a woman’s right to choose.

DeleteThanks for that. Its time we STAND UP against these RETARDS. That was a really good video, no BS, no doom and gloom music, straight up facts.
That's how we do it.
Bobby Jindal Cuts Off Medicaid Funding to Planned Parenthoods In Louisiana
ReplyDelete...The move comes despite the fact that the two Planned Parenthood clinics in Louisiana do not provide abortion, which Planned Parenthood confirmed to the state's Department of Health and Hospitals as part of the state's ongoing investigation into claims that the organization is profiting off of aborted fetal tissue donations. A third clinic being built in New Orleans plans to offer abortion, but will not participate in the tissue donation programs, a Planned Parenthood executive told the state.

Women of Louisiana you better stand up and make your voices heard. Don't let him get away with this!
They need a Wendy Davis and I don't think they have one.
DeleteThe President was always going to veto it, if it passed. This was just a grandstanding stunt by the GOP crazies. And in fact, their fraudulent videos raised a lot of money FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD.
ReplyDeleteThe Campaign Against Planned Parenthood Is Causing a Headache for Republicans
ReplyDelete...By attempting to capitalize on the videos in an unscrupulous way, conservatives have unleashed political forces Republicans can’t control. Anti-abortion zealots are now demanding that Republicans in Congress refuse to appropriate money for government operations unless Planned Parenthood’s funding is abolished—a new test of Republican pro-life bona fides. To force Congress’ hand, they’re admonishing Republican presidential candidates that the anti-abortion vote will only follow those who support the shutdown effort. The purpose of Erick Erickson’s above tweet, alerting the candidates to his question days in advance, is to eclipse the instinctual aversion many of them will have to promoting a government shutdown, and get as many of them on the same page as possible.
The House and Senate Republican conferences are famously undisciplined majority-party tacticians. And though you might expect party leaders to put down an insurgency like this at all costs, so that a government shutdown doesn’t become a central theme of the presidential election, there are mounting reasons to doubt that they can avoid it. Republican victories in the 2014 midterm election, one year after they shut down the government in an unthinking showcase of resistance to Obamacare, convinced party activists that maximalist confrontation carries little political risk. And with little to lose, most Republican presidential candidates will advocate precisely that strategy.

Sarah and Bristol Palin are opposed to abortions but not whiteouts. Sarah and Bristol Palin lie about the birthdates of Bristol's babies. Tripp is older than any child who was born in December, 2008. It puzzles me as to why Levi and his family have not told the truth about those births.
ReplyDeleteLevi has been "gagged" by Palin's lawyer. He wants to share custody of his son, so he stays quiet. Can't blame Levi when he has the Palins as in-laws. That's a never ending nightmare in and of itself. Just my opinion.
Delete...Democrats had no trouble getting to the minimum of 41 votes that they needed to block the bill. The final vote was 53-46, with Republicans having no chance of getting to 60 votes.
ReplyDeleteBefore the vote, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) said, “Recently, anti-abortion activists secretly recorded videos of Planned Parenthood doctors and staff. In these videos, some of the physicians captured on tape did not treat the issue of reproductive health services with the appropriate level of sensitivity, and I was glad to see that the president of Planned Parenthood apologized for the tone of those remarks. But these videos–deceptively edited to paint a misleading picture of the organization–were designed to distort the truth and create controversy. A controversy that opponents of reproductive rights are now exploiting by pushing the same failed strategy. Only this time, they have cloaked their opposition to reproductive rights in disingenuous rhetoric that purports to value women’s health.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) slammed Republicans on the Senate floor, “Do you have any idea what year it is?” Warren asked. “Did you fall down, hit your head, and think you woke up in the 1950’s or the 1890’s? Should we call for a doctor? Because I simply cannot believe that in the year 2015, the United States Senate would be spending its time trying to defund women’s health care centers. You know, on second thought, maybe I shouldn’t be that surprised. The Republicans have had a plan for years to strip away women’s rights to make choices over our own bodies. Just look at the recent facts.”

You go Elizabeth! Be sure to listen!
DeleteIt continues to amaze that they (and I mean both parties) can't find time to do the people's business like budgets, tax relief (other than for the wealthy), etc., but can instantly find time to uselessly vote over and over on hot button issues that keep their names in the limelight but clearly have no chance of passing or surviving a presidential veto.
DeleteWarren is amazing!
DeleteMitch McConnell can schedule all of the empty show votes on repealing Obamacare and defunding Planned Parenthood that he wants, but the real power to get anything done rests with a group of liberals on the Democratic side of the aisle.
ReplyDeleteThe liberals said no, and there isn’t a thing that Mitch McConnell can do about it.
I think that my body is my own and my medical choices are between me and my doctor. First, do no harm. And I can say that because my Daddy was a physician.
ReplyDeleteWell expect to hear a shrill squeal coming the raving bitch from calling liberal lawmakers 'babykillers' or some such hyperbolic nonsense. She is gonna dig her teeth in on this one for as long and hard as it takes to fill her money-laundering coffers.
ReplyDeleteGood deal!
ReplyDeleteAlaska senator Lisa Murkowski voted right along with the rank and file extremists in her Republican Party to DEFUND Planned Parenthood. I am aghast. Lisa also voted AGAINST equal pay for women earlier this year. She Has lost my vote.
ReplyDeleteOf course, her senate colleague Dan Sullivan R-Ohio/AK voted against women's health and rights. That was expected. Lisa, not so much. She has betrayed women to curry some of that KochKash for her 2016 run.
Did you really expect anything different from her? Has she voted for women's issues in the past?
DeleteDonnelly and Manchin need to be primaried their next time out.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in ruby red Indiana. Indiana is just lucky that Donnelly got elected in the first place. Remember the guy that said it was god's plan when a woman who was raped was made pregnant? Richard Mourdock was his name. Don't appreciate what Donnelly did but sure don't want two Republican Senators in Indiana.
DeleteJoe Manchin has to suck up to his constituency because he had a heart and acted human regarding Sandy Hook.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness. They should be thinking about other more important matters and leave women's healthcare alone.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Palins, they should have used planned parenthood instead of continuing to pop out children that they don't want.
Weren't those $15 (or was $20?) donations to SarahPAC going to insure PP got defunded? Ouch!
ReplyDeleteThey probably only raised $45.
DeleteSarah will tell them they didn't send enough money for her to mail the petition to all of senators.
DeleteNext time send more money for postage.
Interesting about Manchin. I live near the panhandle and have friends through the state. West Virginia is owned by coal companies and Dupont, so what's the deal. This could hurt him badly.
ReplyDeleteIn a way, this whole "Gotcha" journalism, fake videos and false narratives has worked in Planned Parenthood's favor. POTUS already said he's veto any attempt at defunding Planned Parenthood. Hillary delivered a scathing rebuke and named the candidates by name.
ReplyDeleteSo keep beating the drums, pyush et al. Planned Parenthood couldn't ask for better air time, endorsements and contributions.
The Republican politicians elected for life don't give a damn about PP, they're using the issue to gin up their base because they don't have any solutions to the problems that face the country. This will help them get reelected aw the cycle continues. The rubes just haven't figured out that it's a scam for their votes.
DeleteJohn Fugelsang posted a tweet tonight: "For 6 yrs GOP controlled WH, Hse, Senate and could've de-funded Planned Parenthood any time - but voting booth rube bait is hard to find."
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/JohnFugelsang/status/628407313188130816
Manchin has to pander there in WV, if I recall correctly there was some type of horrible explosion in one of the coal mines, and President Obama went there to console the grieving families, as they walk past and the President shook their hand one woman was so hateful she wouldn't allow Obama to touch her. As long as Manchin side with the Republicans his seat is safe.
ReplyDeleteThe GOP contenders and in fact the entire GOP is out of their minds with their war on women. Apparently the teabagging evangelical conservatives are still the tail that wags the dog. Well they will find out in 2016 that that dog won't hunt. Idiots.
ReplyDeleteSay one word against Palin and the pee pond goes ballistic saying it's a "war against women". Such BS - it's a war on Idiocracy!
ReplyDeleteMEN in America bestowed upon women the right to vote in 1920 - only 95 years ago. They still don't think we deserve equal pay. They still don't believe that women are capable of making our own decisions concerning our vaginas.
Everyone of those GOP contenders act like they are living in the 1800's. Well they have another thing coming. HELLO...it's 2015! Progress cannot be stopped. We and other minorities included WILL speak. We WILL vote. And lest you old conservatives fogies sucking teabag titties forget, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Take your machismo and shove it and we'll see your flamed out asses at the polls!
Great post, 12:42, Bravo!
DeleteYes! This makes me doubly happy that Iowa's biggest embarrassment, Joni Ernst backed this. I'm an Iowan, and since Planned Parenthood is pretty important in more rural areas (it's the only clinic around for miles) this would have really hurt poorer women in my state.
ReplyDeleteAlso, am I the only one when looking at pictures of Joni, hears Austin Powers saying, "That ain't no woman, that's a man, baby!"
