Democrats are staging a sit-in on the House floor to push for action on gun control legislation.
Dozens of Democrats were participating in the sit-in after it began Wednesday morning, with some lawmakers seated cross-legged on the floor.
Democrats have been pressing for action on gun control before the House leaves at the end of this week for a planned recess.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the veteran lawmaker who was brutally beaten by police in the 1965 civil rights march in Selma, Ala., began the sit-in by giving a speech while surrounded by his colleagues.
"We have turned deaf ears to the blood of the innocent and the deaths in our nation," he said. "Mr, Speaker, where is the heart of this body. Where is our soul?
"How many more mothers, how many more fathers have to share tears of grief before we decide to do anything?"
Shortly after Lewis spoke, the Democratic lawmakers sat down in the well of the House.
Okay, pretty sure nothing like this has ever happened before.More Than 65 Members Of Congress Are Participating In The Ongoing Sit-In For Gun Control https://t.co/myq7445uh0— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) June 22, 2016
By the way is it wildly inappropriate to discuss the man crush I have on Rep. John Lewis?
Simply put the man rocks!
Let me also point out that these are the Democrats that a certain somebody once claimed were no different than the Republicans and who also claimed they no longer represented the will of the people.
If you want to try and hijack their party, at least show some fucking respect.
Update: This is getting better all of the time.
So what are we up to? Twenty two, twenty three hours now?

This is why we love Rep. John Lewis so much. He is a stalwart for the people, he always has been.
I've always loved Congressman Lewis. And he does rock. Remember when he was filmed dancing to "Happy"? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QchDC9FaiI
DeleteBudgets are moral value documents>
Delete"interpret the budget through the lens of the faith community. From this perspective the budget is a moral document. It defines and determines our moral priorities and values. The Scriptures state that government and we as individuals will be judged by how we treat the vulnerable and marginalized in society (Proverbs 17:5; Matthew 25:31-46; Surah 49:9). Both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jesus said that governments are judged by their concern for the least of these."

DeleteThank you so much for posting the link. I love it! I love Rep. John Lewis.
I know I am going to keep going back to view it over and over. :)
The issues is not with AR15s. Most deaths. Occur with hand guns are abused.
ReplyDeleteOk, that's probably true, but it's NOT THE POINT!
DeleteThe heart of this issue is that ALL US citizens should have to have a background check for any gun purchases, anywhere, at any time
Including gun shows, private sales, and online sales.
People who are mentally ill should not be able to get firearms.
People like this IDIOT who threatened a woman with a shotgun will get a misdemeanor, but he should be banned from owning guns.

The issue IS with AR15s. They are designed for no other reason than to kill people, lots of people, in a short period of time.
DeleteAnd you gotta start somewhere -- @6:39

Handguns are not new, they are the old way. Why do you think the presumptive Republican (NRA)
DeletePresidential candidate has the famous gun handler, Sarah Palin, standing with him?
He is saying the humble ex-commander of the Alaskan National guard could lead if he has a golf course to sell overseas and needs to take off work for a few days or weeks.
https://cmgajcpolitics.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/gop-2016-trump-jpeg-086b1.jpg
Sarah is all about promoting and selling the guns that everyone needs today, 2016. Not last years choice.
They can't sell too many of the pink ones or any others. You are really out of it if you don't keep up and get the latest. What kind of terrorist is going to take a pistol to a dance club? Now that women need to get their pink Ar-15s to be cool and able to save everyone, a terrorist with a rifle will be dead before they get off one bullet.
Ar-15s are also for home use, as Sarah's son made clear. Track Palin got his message out loud and clear. He said it is the latest for the suicidal members of your family. A good Ar-15 has many uses as Track Palin clarified. Are you pissed at your current trailer trash? She may have talked to a past sex partner. Be a man and don't take that! It's as easy as to grab one of the Ar-15s laying around the house and scare the sh*t out of the slut. She'll know you mean business and you will be in control again.
A handgun does not have the same effect and the terror is not as convincing. Believe me women will understand not to mess around and they will not leave a man with an Ar-15, that will hunt you and your family down. People will not be going back to the old handguns as the weapon to grab. The advertising is on and it is effective and manufacturers and lobbyist are going to make a killing.
Both Sarah and Track are promoting the Ar-15 as the replacement of the old fashioned handguns and rifles. They still are worth having and buying more for back up and kids. Trump has to know the value of the Ar-15. He is up to date with a number one promoter. The NRA has invested in the Palin family and they are not back tracking on the Palins or Ar-15s.
Why else would Trump have Sarah Palin beside him?
http://us.blastingnews.com/news/2016/06/sarah-palin-as-donald-trump-s-vp-becomes-serious-possibility-joint-appearance-scheduled-00979657.html
First he needs her military, cred, veterans love her. The bonus of her as the face of the latest home weapon of choice, the Ar-15 is a plus for Trump.
Every one that has a home, or doesn't have a home needs at least one. Better yet spread them around to be available where you happen to be when you need them.

DeleteVeterans do not love Sara Palin, y\though the phony bloated never served white patriot teabaggers do like her.
Actually, assault weapons are the issue with most mass shooters in the USA.

DeleteScarah is no more a handgun expert as she is a fashionista! He wardrobe is a disaster, her shoes do not fit, Levi had to load the rifle for her. The only expertise she has is as a grifter. So many people were fooled, now the bloom is off the rose it is time to face reality. PayMe is as much a con as tRump. Birds of a feather flock together.
DeleteI hope Trump picks the trailer park trash. We can all see her get beaten again. It won't be "Sambo beat the Bitch" but rather "The Bitch beat the Cheeto."
DeleteHopefully this will get more people to realize that the president isn't the reason nothing gets done, "it's the Congress, stupid!".
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gryphen. I'm still infuriated by the "little difference between the Democrats and the Republicans" remark. That was despicable.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm just as infuriated at the "don't you dare take any step toward gun control if it's not THIS" crap, which is sputtered in incoherent Palinese above.
Republicans are fighting the good fight for their boys.

ReplyDeleteI saw a few minutes of Louie Gohmert on Fox news last night.
ReplyDeleteLouie has a major butthurt. Accused Democrats of 'political posturing" i the House of representatives "ruining the collegial atmosphere."

DeleteOT but speaking of despicable comments, affirmative action at the University of Texas (which in this case was just looking at a students whole file, including race) was upheld by the Supreme Court. This was Scalia's comment at oral arguments last year:
ReplyDelete“There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas, where they do not do well,” Scalia said, “as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school ... a slower-track school where they do well.”
Luckily the fringe views of Scalia were offset by the more centrist views of Justice Thomas. :-(

ReplyDeleteour media state of affairs is so sad that it largely has fallen to comedians to be our primary truth tellers about what one of our two major parties really stands for "Now that Trump is the party’s presumptive nominee and Republicans are falling into line just as conservatives did in Germany in 1933, we have come to a much graver realization: America has a Republican problem."

Why is John Lewis never mentioned as a possible VP choice?
ReplyDeleteAge, I suspect. He's 76.
DeleteBecause he doesn't want it. And Georgia, and Georgia Peach can't afford to lose him.
DeleteI'm sure Paul Ryan saw his miserable behavior last night as his ticket to the White House in 2017. Let's show him how wrong he is in November!
ReplyDeleteThere are many days when I'm really proud to be a Democrat; yesterday (and continuing today) with the House sit-in and the other day with the Senate mini-filibuster are certainly among them.

Why doesn;t Ryan get TEETH? He looks like he could gum someone to death.
DeleteI love that headline. I think I smell the rotting corpse that is the NRA finally being exposed for what it is. Carrion.
ReplyDeleteAnd I say this as a gun owner and a former NRA member (dumped my membership over a decade ago.)
Hedgewytch, I couldn't agree more. I, too, dropped my NRA membership a long time ago. (Nearly 20 years, actually.) When they moved from being all about gun SAFETY and teaching youngsters the proper handling and safety for weapons, I quit. That was when they got heavily into politics and it was a BAD move for them.
DeleteI can hardly wait until their "influence" has disappeared and they return to what they USED to be. Or even better, simply fade away with their ignominious history.
Why in the name of everything people hold holy does a group of only (AT MOST) 4.5 million members - and that is THEIR claim! - hold so much sway over out government?! And where are they getting all the money to do it?
John Lewis is my Representative!
ReplyDeleteIf you want to help, you've got to call your representatives and senators, plus call Paul Ryan's office and demand a vote. It has to be a phone call. Text DEMAND ACTION to 644-33 and the good people at Everytown for Gun Safety will walk you through it. We have got to call and keep calling!
I think Rep. John Lewis is golden. Wow. What a man. What a legacy. And Paul Ryan whining about it being a publicity stunt? God, he's sounding like Mr. Trump now. They don't have a valid, rational argument so they resort to name-calling and put-downs. Sorry Speaker Ryan, the majority of us see right through you.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lewis finally using his master skills at sittin around and doin nuffin.
ReplyDeleteFuck Off.
DeleteYou couldn't pack John Lewis's lunch.
DeleteYou have this man confused with the do-nothing gop.
DeleteJohn Lewis did more for this country by the time he was 23 than you've done in your whole miserable life.
Delete8:14 - infantile
DeleteIs it possible that, considering polls show 90% of Americans wish for some gun control measures, the Democrats are staging the sit-in for 2 reasons: first, because it's the only avenue they have to effectively get their message across, and, 2. that it may very well ensure that the House has a Democratic majority come November? Is it possible?
ReplyDeleteA commentator on CNN last evening acknowledged that the American system of checks and balances doesn't work at all when the two sides become so polarized as to never achieve any sort of compromise. He also said that it was interesting that when the US helps set up governmental systems in other countries (e.g. Iraq), the US always seems to recommend a parliamentary system. I found that very interesting as a Canadian.....
Since President Obama was first inaugurated in January 2009 the GOP in both houses of Congress have staged a giant seditious tantrum. It is not a matter of the parties being "so polarized"; it is a matter of one party absolutely refusing to compromise ever. And that party is the GOP.
DeleteBeaglemom
All one needs to do is walk into the congressional chamber and point an AR-15 at everyone there, no need to fire it, just point it. Maybe that fear of death will inspite our so called leaders to action. Fyi....gun manufactures realize 1 million dollars for every gun death in this country.....i think i will throw up now....

She's amazing.
DeleteTime's cover has photos and names of all those killed in the Orlando Massacre, what we need is more coverage of all the people killed with guns, on newspapers, magazines, billboards, and television to really drive home the impact of weak gun laws and the bullshit from the NRA.
ReplyDeleteWhat the fillibuster did was focus on the problem, Paul Ryan should have kept the lights and mics on. Someone could have tripped and got seriously hurt. They should have televised the entire thing. We're not asking for much, but we can't even get a bill to vote on because the GOP is the NRA's bitch.
