Courtesy of The Grio:
Because of intensifying civil strife over the recent killings of unarmed black men and boys, many Americans are wondering, “What’s wrong with our police?” Remarkably, one of the most compelling but unexplored explanations may rest with a FBI warning of October 2006, which reported that “White supremacist infiltration of law enforcement” represented a significant national threat.
Several key events preceded the report. A federal court found that members of a Los Angeles sheriffs department formed a Neo Nazi gang and habitually terrorized the black community. Later, the Chicago police department fired Jon Burge, a detective with reputed ties to the Ku Klux Klan, after discovering he tortured over 100 black male suspects. Thereafter, the Mayor of Cleveland discovered that many of the city police locker rooms were infested with “White Power” graffiti. Years later, a Texas sheriff department discovered that two of its deputies were recruiters for the Klan.
In near prophetic fashion, after the FBI’s warning, white supremacy extremism in the U.S. increased, exponentially. From 2008 to 2014, the number of white supremacist groups, reportedly, grew from 149 to nearly a thousand, with no apparent abatement in their infiltration of law enforcement.
This year, alone, at least seven San Francisco law enforcement officers were suspended after an investigation revealed they exchanged numerous “White Power” communications laden with remarks about “lynching African-Americans and burning crosses.” Three reputed Klan members that served as correction officers were arrested for conspiring to murder a black inmate. At least four Fort Lauderdale police officers were fired after an investigation found that the officers fantasized about killing black suspects.
The United States doesn’t publicly track white supremacists, so the full range of their objectives remains murky. Although black and Jewish-Americans are believed to be the foremost targets of white supremacists, recent attacks in Nevada, Wisconsin, Arizona, Kansas and North Carolina, demonstrate that other non-whites, and religious and social minorities, are also vulnerable. Perhaps more alarmingly, in the last several years alone, white supremacists have reportedly murdered law enforcement officers in Arkansas, Nevada and Wisconsin.
That Grio article is over a year old, and the original FBI report was from 2006, but I get the uneasy feeling that right now the information shared in both is more timely than ever.
My second uneasy feeling is that things are about to get much worse.
I have the uneasy feeling you are so right. It all just seems so...coordinated. Like the police are suddenly all listening to the same hate radio, logging in to the same hate media.
ReplyDeleteBut let's be honest here. If you or me were to put on that uniform and you saw all the unlawful riff raff, I am sure you would turn into a hateful robocop after a while too.
DeleteJust great and now we have a presidential candidate supported by these groups.
ReplyDeleteThe other thing that worries me about our police forces across the country is the fact there is talk of them 'militarizing' themselves (the Mayor of a large southern city just publically talked about doing it!) - in weapons, attire and physical force.
DeleteThat assuredly will bring civil war to our country. They'll shoot the minorities - the minorities and others will kill the cops - neighbor will be killing neighbor and we will be nothing more than a third world country just like so many others throughout our world.
Control our police forces across the country America!! Pay close attention for whom you vote. Trump is not a good choice - he is already creating a lot of our troubles due to his verbal spreading of hate and racism!
Anonymous 8:20 AM wrote: The other thing that worries me about our police forces across the country is the fact there is talk of them 'militarizing' themselves …
DeleteThere is talk of it??? Where have you been???
Just google: militarizing police forces
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militarization_of_police
Observers have noted the militarizing of the policing of protests. Since the 1970s, riot police have fired at protesters using guns with rubber bullets or plastic bullets.[14] Tear gas, which was developed for riot control in 1919, is widely used against protesters in the 2000s. The use of tear gas in warfare is prohibited by various international treaties[15] that most states have signed; however, its law enforcement or military use for domestic or non-combat situations is permitted.
Concerns about the militarization of police have been raised by both ends of the political spectrum in the United States …
https://www.aclu.org/issues/criminal-law-reform/reforming-police-practices/police-militarization
The images on the news of police wearing helmets and masks, toting assault rifles, and riding in mine-resistant armored vehicles are not isolated incidents—they represent a nationwide trend of police militarization. Federal programs providing surplus military equipment, along with departments’ own purchases, have outfitted officers with firepower that is often far beyond what is necessary for their jobs as protectors of their communities. …
http://hub.jhu.edu/magazine/2015/spring/aclu-militarization-of-police/
Kara Dansky spent the better part of the fall of 2014 talking about assault rifles, armored vehicles, and forced-entry tools. She is the primary author of an ACLU report released last summer. It provides a succinct introduction to how the federal government has supplied American police forces with military weaponry for the past 30 years and how that equipment is being used today. …
The past thirty years, and you write that there is talk of it?
No shit Ted; totally agree with you on this one. Here in Canada, most major cities - Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver - the police forces look like para-military squads. Even where I reside, in northern Canada, RCMP officers sport full combat gear - fatigues, gumboots, all the weaponry of a fighting soldier. Slow but sure, this shift in tactics was allowed to happen, and peoples' civil liberties have been slowly clawed back. It is no longer a democracy for everyone; it is on its way to becoming a full-fledged controlled police state, where protection and justice is only for those who can buy it!
DeleteO/T Another Nail In Mitch McConnell’s Coffin As Evan Bayh To Run For US Senate In Indiana
ReplyDelete.....In early June, 538 projected it would be a close race, “For now, Democrats are most likely going to win three to four seats.” Polling shows a potentially larger wave by Democrats.
At that time 538 had Indiana in the not likely to change hands category.
But things change.
Add in Evan Bayh and now there is a larger probability of at least four. If Hillary Clinton wins the White House, four gives Democrats the majority and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would take McConnell’s place.
Bayh could be the ‘bye to obstructionist architect Mitch McConnell.

ReplyDeleteJust before midnight on Friday, July 8, LaNaydra Williams discovered a chilling comment on her Facebook page. The words were posted beneath a photo of Williams, who is Black, posing together with her five-year-old daughter.
The comment read:
“We’ll see how much her life matters soon … better be careful leaving your info in the open where she can be found. Hold her close tonight, it’ll be the last time.”
Williams, who lives in Texas, had never seen or spoken to the poster, identified on Facebook as Rodney Lee.
She went to his Facebook page, and immediately saw pictures of a man wearing a police uniform. She contacted authorities immediately.

That was one of our city cops. Our neighbor was a police officer trainer at the county police academy. He retired recently and he loves of listen to Limbaugh's spew at higher than legal decibels. I remember his driving down the street during the Ferguson, Missouri riot time frame with ol' Rush raging on the radio about black thugs. I do wonder what he had been teaching about baton and police stops and police survival? He's a real pig with the ladies also, too.

DeleteBaton Rouge cops barge into woman’s yard to arrest Black Lives Matter protesters she invited
ReplyDeleteA Baton Rouge homeowner invited Black Lives Matter protesters to have a rally on her property — but that didn’t stop cops from arresting dozens of them.
In a video clip posted by CBS News correspondent David Begnaud, the woman who hosted the protest said she was “stunned” after officers moved onto her property and told protesters to disperse. Once some of the protesters left her property and moved onto sidewalks, officers arrested them because they were allegedly going to block the nearby interstate highway.
“I’m very upset,” she told CBS News. “I’m stunned at the behavior of police officers that utilized, from what I understand, the ability to take someone that I guess they targeted that was actually on the street, to bombard my yard and bombard my house.”
The protesters had been peacefully protesting on her property for around 90 minutes, The Daily Beast reports, when officers in riot gear started moving in. At this point, protesters started yelling at the officers that they were trespassing on private property.

Peaceful protesting is legal. The problem is the cops - in Baton Rouge! They need to be brought up short as they are obviously trying to incite the minorities in their area! It's so apparent!
DeleteThey are going to create harm to the minorities there and it needs to be stopped and confronted by the federal government!
The minorities have every right to be pissed and to protest the cops. The Cops are obviously creating the problem!

DeleteMan who first posted Alton Sterling video online arrested on ‘bogus’ charges of assault and battery
ReplyDeleteA Georgia man who was the first to post the dramatic video of the shooting death of Alton Sterling on Facebook claims he was picked up by police 24 hours later for “fitting the description” of an assault suspect and batterer — a crime he said he never committed.
...In an interview with Photography Is Not A Crime, LeDay claims the police waited for him to get to work to publicly arrest him in retaliation for posting the video that eventually set the stage for demonstrations that have roiled the country for the past week.
The arrest of LeDay days after posting the video is remarkably similar to the arrest of Ramsey Orta who was taken into custody after filming New York Police officers tackling and killing Eric Garner with a chokehold in 2014.

And, now Rudi (former Mayor or Governor of New York - can't remember which) is also on the racist bandwagon! JHC! He's just as horrible as Trump!

O/T Even his “spiritual mentor” is a crook:
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump’s ‘spiritual advisor’ sells eternal life for $1,144 by stealing from Harry Potter
Every president and presidential candidate boasts of having spiritual leaders in their lives, but Donald Trump’s is making money selling desperate Christians eternal life for the bargain price of $1,144.
Despite all of Trump’s statements mocking the religion of others, televangelist Paula White is apparently responsible for leading Donald Trump to Christ. However, she might have the same believability problem with evangelical voters that Trump has. Politico reports that a series of IRS investigations, business troubles, divorces and rumors of affairs in tabloids all plague Ms. White and have caused other evangelicals to question her authenticity.
Worshippers who streamed into the doors of New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, Florida on Easter Sunday got the surprise of their lives when their senior pastor offered them an opportunity to cheat death, the Christian Post reports. For a little over a thousand dollars, folks could purchase a “resurrection seed” she told them was set by God. Like the “resurrection stone” out of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this seed would presumably resurrect anyone who has died.......

ReplyDeleteHow Southern racism found a home in the Tea Party
ReplyDeletehttp://www.vox.com/2016/7/7/12118872/southern-racism-tea-party-trump
Within days of President Obama’s inauguration seven and a half years ago, the Tea Party took national politics by storm. Sympathetic pundits and affiliated politicians claimed that the movement amounted to the formation of a new third party that represented widespread economic concerns, its motivation based on outrage over deficit spending, the stimulus package, and the national debt.
Yet coverage of Tea Party rallies also included images of protest signs covered with racist slogans such as ‘‘A Village in Kenya Is Missing Its Idiot: Deport Obama!’’ ‘‘Congress = Slave Owner; Taxpayer = N**gar,’’ and ‘‘Imam Obama Wants to Ban Pork: Don’t Let Him Steal Your Meat,’’ among other inflammatory proclamations.
Tea Party members argued that their opposition to Obama was based on differences over economic policies and not on racial animus – that those placards were extreme outliers. Yet scholarly debates continue over where Tea Partiers’ intolerance for government spending on, say, unemployment benefits for those deemed undeserving ends and racism begins.

ReplyDeleteA big part of the militarization of our civilian police forces resides with the personnel. Preferentially hiring veterans has not served our interests. The only areas where military service and policing overlap are gun use and killing people, which prepares them for the apparent off-to-fight-an-imaginary-war mindset that now permeates our ex-military boys club police departments almost universally. Sweeping changes need to made to change the future of American police departments, and the entrenched police establishment is going to fight every one of them.
ReplyDeleteA few years back, President Obama slowed down the police depts acquiring military surplus stuff.
