Delegates to the Republican National Convention opposed to Donald Trump as their party’s presumptive nominee may have enough signatures to force a full floor vote on whether to “unbind” all of the delegates, allowing them to vote their conscience. According to Politico, the contingent has received a majority of signatures from nine states and territories. The threshold is seven. Former New Hampshire Sen. Gordon Humphrey has reportedly handed the signatures to the convention’s secretary. The floor vote is unlikely to be successful—however, it will bring even more attention to the disgruntled factions of the Republican Party opposed to Trump.
I have been watching this group scramble around the convention floor all morning trying to get their paperwork to the proper officials before the deadline.
Apparently they have accomplished that so we will wait to see what happens.
Update: Here is more courtesy of Fox News:
Anti-Trump Republicans launched a last-ditch bid on Monday to deny the New York businessman the party’s nomination by trying to force a state-by-state vote at the Cleveland convention on the rules that bind delegates to back Donald Trump.
The effort stands little chance of succeeding, but could pose a major disruption to the proceedings just as party officials were trying to smooth over divisions. The Trump camp is said to be "livid" at the revived push.
"This is a big headache," one official told Fox News.
I told you this week would be entertaining!
Update 2: in the meantime the #DumpTrump movement takes to the streets in protest.

“He was always very open about describing women by their breast size. Any time I see people in the Trump organization say how nice he is, I want to throw up. He’s been a nasty person to women for a long time,” says one crew member. “My girlfriend at the time was a production assistant on the show and he made a comment about her, knowing that he was mic’d and that we’d all hear it. He said, ‘Who’s that hot little girl running around?’ For a second I was like, Cool, Donald Trump thinks my girlfriend is hot. But then I was like, Wait, an old man said something about my 28-year-old girlfriend. Take it easy, homeboy.”
Delete“He would talk about the female contestants’ bodies a lot from the control room,” recalls one midlevel producer. “We shot in Trump Tower, the control room was on the seventh floor, and he walked in one day and was talking about a contestant, saying, ‘Her breasts were so much bigger at the casting. Maybe she had her period then.’ He knows he’s mic’d and that 30 people are hearing this, but he didn’t care. That’s kind of him. During the campaign, when he was talking about Megyn Kelly, I thought: He’s obsessed with menstruation.”
“He’s not good with people touching him, he’s very germophobic,” said one crew member. “We were instructed never to touch him—he wouldn’t shake hands,” said another.
Delete“There was a fat contestant who was a buffoon and a fuckup,” recalls the midlevel producer. “And he would fuck up week after week, and the producers would figure that he’d screwed up so badly that Trump would have to fire him. But Trump kept deciding to fire someone else. The producers had to scramble because of course Trump can never be seen to make a bad call on the show, so we had to re-engineer the footage to make a different contestant look bad. Later, I heard a producer talk to him, and Trump said, ‘Everybody loves a fat guy. People will watch if you have a funny fat guy around. Trust me, it’s good for ratings.’ I look at Chris Christie now and I swear that’s what’s happening.”
Delete“He was always a narcissist, you can see that,” says Bill Pruitt, producer on Seasons 1 and 2 of The Apprentice, and later a producer on the reality shows The Amazing Race and Deadliest Catch. “But on the TV show, what you didn’t see, what we saw, was the evolution of a storyteller. You could see how keenly aware Trump became of the story he was telling as it was shaped by the producers around him—of Omarosa’s decline, or Bill Rancic’s rise to glory. Reality TV is the public pillory now, the grand coliseum where we give the big thumbs up or thumbs down. And it shaped him.”
Delete“I’ve been struggling with the whole experience of watching Trump go from punch line to GOP nominee,” Pruitt says, “because of how it reflects on reality TV, which is the work I’ve been dedicating my life to for the last 10 years. The associations are glaring. Those in our business who hadn’t already taken stock of what we wrought, we’re doing it now. I might have signed an NDA back in the day that would allow someone to come after me, but I feel almost a patriotic duty to talk about this.
“Those of us involved in the show are proud of our work. But we might have given the guy a platform and created this candidate. It’s guys like him, narcissists with dark Machiavellian traits, who dominate in our culture, on TV, and in the political realm. It can be dangerous when we confuse stories we’re told with reality. We need to wake up—and that’s from someone who helped tell these stories.”
They just defeated this attempt using a voice vote, and claimed that the ayes outnumber the nays, when that was clearly not the case.
ReplyDeleteCan't say that any of this is surprising. But the anger on the floor of the convention is palpable.
A convention hall full of wingnuts?
DeleteThe grass roots are all wee wee'd up?

Gee, voice vote, claiming losing side won. Where have I read that before.
DeleteThat's pretty much what voice votes are for. Roberts allows fora roll call challenge to voice votes but I doubt either party allows it. Might undermine the agenda. It's all a pantomime anyway. The outcome has been chosen long before the convention. The primaries and convention are just for show.
Attempt to get a roll call vote has now been defeated as well.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Trump is going to get that nomination after all.
As if that was ever in doubt.
I can't believe they did another yay/nay voice voice and said the yays had won even though the nay vote was far louder!
ReplyDeleteAnd it was said that there were more like 11 states, far above the 7 needed, for the roll call but the people on the stage said it was 9 and that 3 had withdrawn.
And they just keep ignoring the people who want to talk and explain and get info on this so-called dwindled # of states.
SO CROOKED!!!!!
I hope the anti-Trump people will not just go quiet but will make their voices heard throughout this crooked convention.
The anti-Trump people are the only sane people at the gop convention. Anyone who supports having an insane person as the gop nominee should be banned from any political office.
DeleteFinally! A rigged system Trumpy likes! The convention is surely rigged for Trump. The demise of the Republican Party is nigh.
DeleteIf those states withdrew, what kind of persuasion was used? And why didn't those states at least inform the other states wanting a roll call vote? Sounds like Trump and some others were working behind the scenes and making promises to get states to drop out and staying hush-hush was part of the crooked deal. What was said? Promised? I'm dying to know.
