Russia's troll factories were, at one point, likely being paid by the Kremlin to spread pro-Trump propaganda on social media.
That is what freelance journalist Adrian Chen, now a staff writer at The New Yorker, discovered as he was researching Russia's "army of well-paid trolls" for an explosive New York Times Magazine exposé published in June 2015.
"A very interesting thing happened," Chen told Longform's Max Linsky in a podcast in December.
"I created this list of Russian trolls when I was researching. And I check on it once in a while, still. And a lot of them have turned into conservative accounts, like fake conservatives. I don't know what's going on, but they're all tweeting about Donald Trump and stuff," he said.
Okay, okay now that does seem a little suspicious. But it doesn't really mean anything right?
Right?
Courtesy of Threat Connect:
In our initial Guccifer 2.0 analysis, ThreatConnect highlighted technical and non-technical inconsistencies in the purported DNC hacker’s story as well as a curious theme of French “connections” surrounding various Guccifer 2.0 interactions with the media. We called out these connections as they overlapped, albeit minimally, with FANCY BEAR infrastructure identified in CrowdStrike’s DNC report.
Now, after further investigation, we can confirm that Guccifer 2.0 is using the Russia-based Elite VPN service to communicate and leak documents directly with the media. We reached this conclusion by analyzing the infrastructure associated with an email exchange with Guccifer 2.0 shared with ThreatConnect by Vocativ’s Senior Privacy and Security reporter Kevin Collier. This discovery strengthens our ongoing assessment that Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian propaganda effort and not an independent actor.
(By the way ThreatConnect is a group of researchers in Arlington, Virginia workign to unravel the source behind the hack of DNC emails.)
Alright now, that is a little worse, and certainly seems to be further proof that the Russians hacked the DNC, and released their information to Wikileaks so that Julian Assange, who hates Hillary Clinton, could release it right when it would do he most political damage to the Democratic presidential campaign.
But that is not proof that Trump is in cahoots with the Russians and since he just claimed to have "zero investments" with them I'm sure that when he releases his taxes they will back that up.
Wait, what's this?
Courtesy of The Hill:A top aide to Donald Trump said Wednesday that the Republican presidential nominee "will not be releasing" his taxes.
Oh.
Yeah well it's not like there is any evidence of Trump actually ASKING the Russians to hack and release potentially harmful information about Hillary Clinton.
Courtesy of Politico:
Donald Trump invited Russia to hack Hillary Clinton on Wednesday, asking them to find “the 30,000 emails that are missing” from her time as secretary of state.
“It would be interesting to see, I will tell you this, Russia, if you're listening I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” the Republican nominee said at a news conference in Florida. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”
And we're done here.
Now his campaign is trying to walk it back. Donald very soon to make his first comments since making his Russia email remarks.
ReplyDeleteTalk about damage control!
Would it REALLY be so bad if, under a Drumpf administration, senior Russian operatives roll-on a more active role in running the United States? Pence only had two hands and Drumpf has his business to run. I bet Putin could help out in an advisory or proxy role for a disinterested, lazy, incompetent boob like Drumpf. (no offense to actual boobs intended...)
ReplyDeleteMaybe Putin would take gun control to a new level in Russerica!
DeleteShocking. They own the fool. George Will is on it. He's a man I don't especially like, but I do respect. I hope you're not leaving, Gryphen, we need you too.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree absolutely. Apparently he has a Down's syndrome son, whom he treats with incredible love and care, even teaching him all about baseball and taking him to games.
DeleteLook it up and read about it on the internet. I disagree with George Will's opinions, but I can't deny that he walks the walk. I absolutely respect that.
See, Sarah. that is how someone who truly respects life acts.
2:15
DeleteGood comment. I, too, have had issues with Will over the years - and yet every single time I read a comment of his I think of his son. Of course, he is not the only parent with a DS child - and yet it shows a loving, caring side of him more people should be aware of. He does not publicize it or use it as Sarah P has done. She carried Trig on her hip like a sack of potatoes.

Now: Trump says he never met Putin.
ReplyDeletePreviously: Trump said he met Putin when they were both on 60 minutes and got to know him quite well. Trump also said he spoke both directly and indirectly with Putin on a trip to Moscow.
How anyone can continue to sport this pathologically lying narcissist is beyond me.
And it killed me how he said, "I don't know who Putin is." he's said that about other people who everyone knows and even said it about the KKK. Maybe that's a turn of phrase he uses to just mean that he has no relationship with someone, but at 70 years old and as a candidate for pres, he should know which diction level he needs to speak at.
Delete"And we're done here.
ReplyDeleteThat's an excellent summary of where we'll be if Comrade Trump becomes President.
Putin is like a human Oujia board. You don't want to mess around with him.
DeleteTreason is the word of the day. Trump went too far with his big mouth this time.
ReplyDeleteWhen a man tells you who his is, believe him.
TP (Trump/Pence) should stand for Treasonous Prick!
DeleteWho can formally bring the 'treason' charges against Donald Trump? He's blatantly put himself on full view for all to see and hear.
DeleteIs this another example of him saying he could to out into the streets, with a gun, in America and no one would do anything to him?
This particular horribleness he is putting on is one million+ times worse.
He prides himself in associating w/Putin...prides himself in his supposed business deals in Russia and on and on. He says he wants more wars and wants to use nuclear bombs!
Trump should be arrested for treason, put on trial and either shot or hung for the world to see. He has committed treason and is proven to be un-American (through his own words and actions which are all accessible for review!)
Just imagine if a Democrat acted as has this horribly vile man!
TRUMP DOES NOT REPRESENT AMERICA OR AMERICANS!
Vote Hillary Clinton, the first woman POTUS! She is more than ready, prepared and able to walk into the White House in January, 2017.
His followers DO believe him and most frightening, they love it!
DeleteI can't imagine any American, regardless of party doing this.
Delete@anon 3:15 PM
DeleteNeither can I. Trump is palling around with Putin.
And now we have a brand.
Delete"Traitor Trump"
"Treasonous Trump"
The Trump/Putin ticket.
In a country not owned by business and other special interests, Trump would be charged with treason.
ReplyDeleteJinPA
Boy, the GOP is sure putting country first...NOT. How can they stand by and let this guy represent their party? This morning even Mike Pence was distancing himself from Trump. I wonder if he has the balls to put country first and withdraw.
ReplyDeleteWhere are the Republicans in Congress? Why aren't they coming out against their treason speaking candidate, Trump?
DeleteThey are going to rue these days when they see the the number of seats they will lose in the U.S. Congress, in state Legislatures across the country and the major loss that Trump will experience!
Vote for Hillary Clinton! Bring sanity back to our country after this sick and divisive Republican election cycle!
Pence should split before things get bad and he has to take the fall for the lost election.
DeletePence is too dense to figure it out. He will go down with the SS Trump along with the rest of his crew.
DeleteNope.
DeletePence will stick it out hoping if Trump wins it's only a matter of a short time before he's impeached and Pence moves up to the Oval Office.
Can you imagine if a democrat did that
ReplyDeleteAfter they were tarred and feathered in public, they would be immediately disqualified from the presidential race.
DeleteThe US has been meddling in other countries' politics for years. You think we don't hack them?

Anon 2:13: Stop being a Trump apologist. Sure, spying goes on all of the time, and around the world. When was the last time a POTUS wanna be, blatantly asked a foreign country (Russia for heaven's sake)to hack the US?
DeleteTrump is Putin's little bitch, and the reason he won't show his taxes is because we would find out that he has borrowed a lot of money from Russia.
2:34
DeleteCorrect.
Trump is Putin's bitch.
Not being an apologist.
DeleteJust opening the rose colored eyes to the building materials the U.S. is made of before you start throwing all those stones.
My post had nothing to do with Trump being the treasonous ass that he is. It was about the fact that the U.S., Russia, China, hack and interfere all the time. This time Russia was blatantly caught at it. I'll bet they cut off Wikileaks too since it's now been traced back to them. They'll hang Julian Assange out to dry.
He will blow it when he starts getting intelligence briefings he will not be able to keep his big mouth shut but he is a republican so that's ok
ReplyDeleteIf President Obama is the one that makes the decision to release the information to Trump, I so hope he doesn't do it! If it is up to him - I seriously doubt he'll provide it!
DeleteAsk the Russian experts.

And if 'missing' emails are released that contain damning information.....?
ReplyDeleteWhen he made that Russia/email comment at his first rally today, he also very vaguely brought up Bill Clinton's speech and referred to a "chapter" that had been left out. Of course it was coarse of him to even go there that way. But this afternoon--and I didn't hear him say what he did about Russia at this second rally, but I may have missed it--he brought up the "chapter" that Bill had left out and started talking about Bill grabbing Hillary, using that wording to make it absolutely clear that he was talking about Bill and what he allegedly had done to other women. Trump first stated that Bill had used the word "girl" instead of "woman" when he first met Hillary and tried saying that he was talking about Bill's word there to make the point that it wasn't politically correct, but it was really a way to say something specific about Bill's affairs and so-called attacks. He also brought up Rachel Maddow and how it bothered her that Bill had said "girl." Rachel was referring to certain word choices that she saw as poor choices because of the BC allegations and Lewinsky scandal, and I thought the same thing but that Rachel was actually being hyper-sensitive as someone whose job is all about words but the general public would not have the problem she did. (And the audience was also glad to hear the long story about his pursuing of Hillary--it was too long for Rachel, but regular people out there wanted to hear it.) You could tell that Trump was dying to say more, to really get into the details about Bill Clinton, and it killed him not to.
ReplyDeleteOoooooKay. And this has what to do about this article??
DeletePat Padrnos
I thoroughly enjoyed the speech President Bill Clinton provided our country. It was outstanding and gave us his history with his long-time wife and partner, Hillary Clinton!
DeleteRachel Maddow was only interested in ratings! She has never gone in that direction on her daily shows (she wasn't on 'her' show when she said this about Bill Clinton!). She has just lost a viewer. Think she royally fucked up!
When Hillary Clinton is elected POTUS, I hope she never gives Rachel an interview.
I'm going to send Rachel Maddow a note after the Democratic Convention has been completed and express my feelings to her.
Quite simply, it is a point of interest via two rallies today involving Trump's Russia statement (as well as denial of any involvement with Russia and also his change of statements regarding knowing Putin or not) that people have now referred to as treasonous. And while he tempered his Russia statement during the second rally, he added to the Bill Clinton statement; the parallel edits were noticeable.
DeleteOf course Russia and Bill Clinton are two different subjects, but as a matter of how this blog works, allowing people to include asides and other interesting observations about Trump et al, no explanation should even be necessary as to why the above post was made.
Drumpf should be very careful where he goes and how he frames it since he has a lot more dirt in that regard than Hillary. It is Hillary that is running for President, not Bill.
DeleteTrump said Putin likes him and hates pres. Obama (in his speech). Wait until Putin hates trump and wants his money back.
DeleteLooks like Russia, with Trump, now has what the USA had with our puppet Boris Yeltsin.
ReplyDeleteToo funny!
Trump's dick must be Yuuuuuuge. Explains why he keeps stepping on it.
ReplyDeleteThe FBI already recovered those emails, so......
ReplyDeleteActually they didn't. Comey told Congress all they recovered were fragments of emails. And they had the servers that were physically in the Clinton house and reportedly the servers and backups from the hosting company in Colorado the Clintons used later and the backups from the company that backed up the hosting company's servers. If copies of the deleted emails exist anywhere electronically or printed physically, I think it's fair to conclude Clinton and her people don't have them and don't know they exist. Who else would have kept them?
DeleteNearly 6 dozen example since only 1949 of the USA attempting to overthrow foreighn governments:
ReplyDeletehttps://williamblum.org/essays/read/overthrowing-other-peoples-governments-the-master-list
Trump has the intelligence of a yam. He confused Tim Kaine (VT) with Tom Kean (NJ).
ReplyDeleteFolks, if this man wins, we are all screwed!
I like how you said yam, and not potato! Yams are orange, are they not?
DeleteAnd he twice called John Hinckley David Hinckley in referring to the man who shot Reagan. When my husband and I heard the mistake we thought Trump might be thinking David Brinkley.
DeleteSorry, Tim Kaine (VA) Typo.
Deletethe intelligence of a yam! hahahaha
Deleteand he has the face color to match! ;)
Devastating analysis of the Trump campaign's pro-Russian activities, particularly with regard to Ukraine: http://time.com/4426818/donald-trump-julian-assange-vladimir-putin/
ReplyDeleteTrump is Putin's puppet now. (As are Wikileaks/Assange.)
And note this possible scenario, if Trump is elected: "I wonder how Trump will feel when Putin releases Trump’s tax returns. That won’t come until long after the election—Putin understands when’s got an ace in his hand. It will certainly come if Trump makes it to the White House, and not at the moment of his choosing."
Trump--potential Commander in Chief!--is undoubtedly susceptible to blackmail by a foreign power that is antagonistic to the United States.
This is beyond comprehension. How can anyone calling themself a patriot ("America 1st!") consider voting for that man? So depressed.
Trump is probably going to be in big trouble with the Russians if he doesn't seal the deal on getting the presidency. The Russian mafia is horrible. I remember reading Ivana wanting a bodyguard for protection against them. Donald sold his soul and patriotism for a dollar. What would be worse jail or sending him back to Russia? Well, he has nothing to offer the Russians except cheap excuses about not being able to repay the money they have lent him. He is probably broke except for this Russian money. Did he pay taxes on this? His only other legitimate income was from the tv show.
DeletePalin should get in their and talk about what a great guy Putin is too and how he has helped her.
DeleteWhy is it not surprising that Palin would gravitate toward a US traitor?
By the way, it's my understanding that Trump now receives daily national security intelligence briefings. (Both nominees do.)
ReplyDeleteThe emails he has invited and encouraged Russia to hack and release are those exchanged when Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State of the United States of America.
If this isn't actual treason under the law, it's as close to it as I've ever seen by a political candidate in this country.
But, IOKIYAR.
DeleteThey just reported that he will begin to receive briefings on Friday. That man has a big stupid mouth, so we should brace ourselves.
DeleteMy limited experience is that security agencies are apolitical except at the top. That is, they are filled with patriots.
DeleteI am appalled that he is getting this information. It blows the mind and makes me really question our government when we have a candidate that has already blatantly committed treason in front of the entire country and world!
DeleteWhy didn't President Obama stop this action or were his hands tied?
The Republicans in the U.S.Congress should have had the balls to do something about 'their' fucking leader as to getting this information.
JHC! This is all a nightmare to watch!
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/part-I/chapter-115
DeleteProblem is he really hasn't broken any laws, yet, although he is skating close to sedition.
America has a big mouth in general. None of us can keep our mouths shut. Putin doesn't have to hack computers. All he has to do is sent his spies over here, and every one of us are clamouring to be heard on our conspiracy theories, or what we think of the candidates. It's open season on our big mouths. Someone, maybe George Carlin, said, if the masses are stupid then that's the type of leader they choose. Donald's limbic system in his brain knows no boundaries. He must have bumped his head once. He will say anything, or do anything to get attention.
ReplyDeleteHow could anyone with a conscience vote for anybody that has blatantly called for a foreign government to interfere in an American election?
ReplyDeleteIt truly boggles the mind.
...but then this IS the party that believes that "dark money" should be allowed in our elections.
What a seditious thing to say in a public speech. I wonder how the optics would go if President Obama sends CIA and FBI agents to Trump Tower? What isn't mentioned was he said some pretty nasty things about President Obama. My question remains, is there ONE republican alive with the guts to speak up against this moron? Sure, the speaker kind of sort of tried, but it didn't go far enough.
ReplyDeleteHe should have included asking Putin to forward the 20 million emails missing from the Bush White House while they were using a RNC server for White House business. Everyone should bring that up any time someone mentions Hillary's emails. Also there was NO investigation.
ReplyDeleteWhuuuh! Not a good picture. Not a good picture of Trump at all! He's got hog jowls. Low energy, needs to exercise and push away from the feeding trough.
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump release your tax forms!!
I wonder if the Russians can find Trig's birth certificate. While they are at it, we'd like a look at Sailor's birth certificate, too. And the wedding license of Bristol and Dakota.
ReplyDeletenaw they are busy exhuming graves to figure out why there is still a Romanov alive & well!

They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia's always on my mind

Take me to your daddy's farm
Let me hear your balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Hey you don't know how lucky you are boys
Back in the U.S.S.R.
Oh let me tell you, honey
Hey, I'm back!
I'm back in the U.S.S.R.
Yes, I'm free!
Yeah, back in the U.S.S.R.
asking for help from the russians was the big headline but his new conference was a disaster and lots of other stupid stuff was also said
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump Keeps Making Us Wonder If This Could Possibly Be Real Life - Asking Russia to hack Hillary Clinton was just part of Wednesday’s wacky press conference.
Below are some of the hidden gems from Wednesday’s presser.
Trump tried a little Hispanic outreach.
He appeared not to know who Tim Kaine is. Or where Kaine comes from.
Trump told a female reporter to “be quiet.”
He said a Baltimore prosecutor should prosecute herself over her handling of the Freddie Gray case.
Trump wasn’t quite sure who tried to kill Ronald Reagan.
He also came out against email.
Trump insulted Obama with this not-at-all loaded line. “I think President Obama has been the most ignorant president in our history,” he said. “His views of the world, as he says, don’t jive.”
He accused Putin of using the “n-word” to describe Obama.
Trump took credit for Clinton’s flip on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
