President Obama reiterated that he believes Donald Trump is "unfit" to be president, issuing a sharp rebuke of the Republican nominee from the White House East Room on Tuesday.
"Yes, I think the Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president," Obama said in response to a question from a reporter during a news conference with Lee Hsien Loong, the prime minister of Singapore. "I said so last week, and he keeps on proving it."
Obama then pivoted to question why Republican leaders, who have denounced Trump's response to a handful of issues, have still endorsed him. The latest being Trump's flap with the Khan family, the parents of Army Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004. Khizr Khan, Humayun's father, criticized Trump at the Democratic convention, questioning whether Trump had read the Constitution and charging that the New York real-estate developer had sacrificed little.
"[T]he question I think they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him?" Obama said in particular of Republican leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and 2008 nominee and Arizona Sen. John McCain.
"What does this say about your party that this is your standard-bearer?" Obama continued. "This isn't a situation where you have an episodic gaffe. This is daily and weekly where they are distancing themselves from statements he is making. There has to be a point at which you say, this isn't somebody I can support to be president of the United States, even if he purports to be a member of my party. The fact that this has not happened makes these denunciations ring hollow."
Damn! I think it's President Obama who has taken off the kid gloves here.
And seriously, who can blame him?
As evidenced by Trump's response to the President's statement on Twitter. (Of course.)
That tweet links to Trump's Facebook page which says the following:STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FAILED LEADERSHIP: https://t.co/SPgFIFuSO7— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 2, 2016
STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FAILED LEADERSHIP
"Obama-Clinton have single-handedly destabilized the Middle East, handed Iraq, Libya and Syria to ISIS, and allowed our personnel to be slaughtered at Benghazi. (I'm sorry WHO destabilized the Middle East?) Then they put Iran on the path to nuclear weapons. Then they allowed dozens of veterans to die waiting for medical care that never came.
Hillary Clinton put the whole country at risk with her illegal email server (Nope, that's a lie.), deleted evidence of her crime, and lied repeatedly about her conduct which endangered us all. They released criminal aliens into our country who killed one innocent American after another -- like Sarah Root and Kate Steinle -- and have repeatedly admitted migrants later implicated in terrorism. They have produced the worst recovery since the Great Depression. They have shipped millions of our best jobs overseas to appease their global special interests. They have betrayed our security and our workers, and Hillary Clinton has proven herself unfit to serve in any government office.
She is reckless with her emails, reckless with regime change, and reckless with American lives. Our nation has been humiliated abroad and compromised by radical Islam brought onto our shores. We need change now."
-Donald J. Trump
Okay well most of that is either patently untrue or has nothing to do with President Obama.
Trump followed that up with this tweet:
And there we have it.President Obama will go down as perhaps the worst president in the history of the United States!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 2, 2016
I guess if you legitimately think that President Obama is the"worst president in history of the United States" you would certainly be ignorant enough to vote for this orange tinted tiny fingered vulgarian.
O/T but the Washington Post just posted this:
ReplyDelete"Meanwhile, longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone is explicitly encouraging Trump to make this case to his supporters. “I think we have widespread voter fraud, but the first thing that Trump needs to do is begin talking about it constantly,” Stone told a friendly interviewer, adding that Trump should start saying this: “If there’s voter fraud, this election will be illegitimate, the election of the winner will be illegitimate, we will have a constitutional crisis, widespread civil disobedience, and the government will no longer be the government.”
"Stone also said: “I think he’s gotta put them on notice that their inauguration will be a rhetorical, and when I mean civil disobedience, not violence, but it will be a bloodbath.”
"There’s been a lot of chatter on twitter to the effect that Trump is trying to delegitimize his potential loss in the eyes of his supporters. But I think this goes further than that: It’s also about delegitimizing the Hillary Clinton presidency, should she win."
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2016/08/02/donald-trump-begins-contemplating-the-unthinkable-he-might-lose/?wpisrc=nl_most-draw8&wpmm=1
This election is getting filthy, not just dirty.
The first response to that is Donald Trump is trying to weasel out of debating Hillary Clinton.
DeleteAnd if he does debate her and keeps up the Rovian attacks, then Donald Trump clearly believes he has no chance of beating Hillary Clinton in the election so he's trying to beat her on Twitter.
Defend yourselves.
Barbara, I've seen on many RWNJ sites that, if tRump loses, that's what the plan is. A revolution like we've never seen.
DeleteIt's one thing to sit behind the anonymity of a computer; quite another to actually do something.
That this is being encouraged is downright frightening.
@2:55 -- had a look at the link to one of Trump's OBAMA IS THE WORST ... and there were thousands of comments: couldn't read more than a couple or I wouldn't sleep tonight. It is midnight in America: will 1/2 of America wake up from their delusional, mob-rule thinking or can this actually be the end of Democracy?
DeleteSo he is going to "win" by intimidation and extortion? Scare the country into letting him "win" so he can be President? He and this Roger Stone need to be arrested immediately for domestic terrorism, and they need to be put in a cell with the key thrown away. The FBI should be on this immediately, as well as every other law enforcement agency in the country. This is a threat to our democracy for sure. They have to be stopped.
Delete'Member Sayree's Email snafoos? I do. I gasped at the utter late night rantings which were so strange at the end. The word lunatic comes to my mind.
DeleteHmm. That almost sounds like he is fomenting rebellion among his supporters if he doesn't win.
DeleteWould that be .... treason?
Couple that with inviting the Russians to hack our computers and....well...it doesn't look very patriotic to me.
Treason? Sedition? Subversion of the government and our election process?
At what point do they cross the line and get indicted?
That's what I want to know, 5:35 PM.

ReplyDeleteThis is a personal feud ...
I disagree. President Obama was dealing with the birthers before Donald Trump came along. Donald was just the loudest voice. And, I don't remember seeing anything that Donald's investigators found in Hawaii (I don't believe he sent anyone). Donald is unfit to be the leader of the free world.
DeleteI've heard many a Fox-news watcher parrot that President Obama is the worst president ever.
ReplyDeleteWell, of course they do. They still think GW 'kept us safe,' and had nothing to do with 3500 people dying in NYC, another 5000 soldiers killed in his wars, another 100,000 innocent Iraqis killed...they are idiots.

Does he even have the endorsements of HW or GW? Jeb even? We know he's not going to get Barbara's vote. Probably not Laura's either.
I think Donald will go down in history as the worst candidate ever.

DeleteIt was said on TV a bit ago that these Obama comments today were even more significant coming from inside the WH during a formal occasion rather than, say, on the campaign trail with sleeves rolled up. It's astounding, too, that Trump has come out today and said he's "not ready" to endorse Ryan or McCain. They haven't liked everything he's done and it took a while before Ryan said he was "ready," but these guys have still been behind Trump and intend to keep endorsing Trump--yet he has to act like mister big mafia godfather.

Critics ridiculed the idea that Trump gleaned any real understanding of Russia from hosting a beauty pageant there. The paper also reported that, a few years earlier, Trump had considered aiding the reconstruction of the city’s Moskva and Rossiya hotels.
Joining Trump’s November 2013 meeting with the Agalarovs were Alex Sapir and Rotem Rosen, a pair of New York-based Russian developers who helped to develop the Trump Soho hotel and condominium project in Manhattan. Sapir later told New York’s Real Estate Weekly that Russian visitors to the Trump Soho “have been telling us they wish there was something modern and hip like it in Moscow. … A lot of people from the oil and gas businesses have come to us asking to be partners in building a product like Trump Soho there.”.....

Trump’s claim that ‘I have nothing to do with Russia’

“I have nothing to with Russia. I have nothing to do with Russia — for anything.”
— Donald Trump, news conference, July 27, 2016

I think the bigger news is that Dakota Meyer is publicly calling for cheeto breath to apologize to the Khans. Wonder what old saree thinks about that. Will Brissy have to choose sides? As the Stomach Turns, to be continued tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI expect Duh to post more now that Donald has said he's always wanted a "purple heart." This guy is stupider and more tone deaf than even Sarah.
I think the "marriage" is over. Probably Dakota's first check from Sara bounced, plus Brissy told him she's preggers again but needs a DNA test.
DeleteIS THIS WHY THE DONALD HASN'T PRODUCED HIS TAXES?
ReplyDeleteWashington Post:
In a news conference responding to evidence suggesting Russian agencies hacked the email accounts of the Democratic National Committee, the GOP presidential nominee insisted that he had no business dealings in Russia — with one single exception.
As he put it: “What do I have to do with Russia? You know the closest I came to Russia, I bought a house a number of years ago in Palm Beach, Florida. Palm Beach is a very expensive place. There was a man who went bankrupt and I bought the house for $40 million and I sold it to a Russian for $100 million including brokerage commissions. So I sold it. So I bought it for 40, I sold it for 100 to a Russian. That was a number of years ago. I guess probably I sell condos to Russians, okay?”
At another point in the news conference, he acknowledged “numerous developers that wanted to develop property in Moscow and other places. But we decided not to do it.” He did not provide reasons.
The problem with this account is that it is contradicted by other evidence suggesting the Trump Organization has long been interested in business in Russia — evidence collected by our colleagues Tom Hamburger, Rosalind S. Helderman and Michael Birnbaum for a lengthy article that was published in June.
Here’s what Alan Garten, general counsel of the Trump Organization, told our colleagues in May: “I can tell you, as a company, we’re always looking at new developments. No question about it. We’re always looking to expand and do projects all over the world. I have no doubt, as a company, I know we’ve looked at deals in Russia. And many of the former Russian Republics.”
The Facts
The Palm Beach sale was documented in the Post article, and Trump’s numbers are close. Trump sold a mansion in 2008 for $95 million to Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev, according to property records. Trump had purchased the mansion at a bankruptcy auction less than four years earlier for $41.4 million, records show.
But there is other evidence that shows a continuing interest in doing deals not only with Russian real estate buyers, but deals in Russia. “Russia is one of the hottest places in the world for investment,” Trump said in a 2007 deposition. “We will be in Moscow at some point,” he said.
There is some evidence that Trump’s interest in doing business in Russia is unrequited. In 1987, he went to Moscow to find a site for luxury hotel; no deal emerged. In 1996, he sought to build a condominium complex in Russia; that also did not succeed. In 2005, Trump signed a one-year deal with a New York development company to explore a Trump Tower in Moscow, but the effort fizzled.
In a 2008 speech, Trump’s son, Donald Jr., made it clear that the Trumps want to do business in Russia, but were finding it difficult....
Without access to Trump’s tax returns — which he has refused to disclose — it may be impossible to tell whether he currently has Russian assets. But he shouldn’t be so quick to suggest he has never had an interest into doing business in Russia.

DeleteThat Purple Heart moment at Trump's rally was so, so bad. Later it was said--and I think it's true after hearing it a couple times--that the PH wasn't real, but that didn't matter in some respects.
ReplyDeleteTrump's acceptance of it, if he thought it real, was so shallow and there was no sense of honor there. If he thought he really had to accept it and didn't want to offend the man who gave it to him, okay I can see taking it momentarily but then handing it back to him with a thank you. Whether he thought it real or not, he handled the medal like it was a Bic lighter as he casually slipped it into and out of his pocket--real or not, it was symbolic and you just don't do that. The language he used was the typical Sopranos language with matching tone and he was completely uninspired--if he thought he had a PH in his hands, how could he not take pause and find something meaningful to say to the listening crowd.
And he had absolutely no sense of how that medal moment (again, doesn't matter if the medal was real) played against all that has been talked about all week with the Khans and his five deferments. He always wanted a Purple Heart? That's what he said. Um, how does someone with five decrements expect that to even be possible? Not that a real soldier wants a PH.
If Trump knew that the PH was a replica and he acted like he believed the guy, then he was participating in a skit. WTF? Why oh why would he do that? Again, if he thought it to be real, his behavior was all wrong. If he was faked out and embarrassed, I've seen nothing about that yet and I bet he'll stay silent.
Even if believing it real, I half expected him to call out to the man, "Here, catch!" and toss the medal back to the man when his shtick was over.
He was casual, you're right. He has no idea what honor is.
DeleteI love President Obama. Frank Bruni, a Republican, has a good column in the NYTimes today urging Republicans to act like grownups, repudiate Trump and support Hillary Clinton.
