Courtesy of The Atlantic:
President Trump signed a memorandum late Saturday afternoon that reorganizes the National Security Council (NSC), including Steve Bannon, the former chair of Breitbart Media and his chief strategist and senior counselor, as well as Reince Priebus, his chief of staff, on its principals committee. The decision is unusual because such positions are not normally given to political operatives. Bannon has been among the most controversial of Trump’s advisors, because of his association with the racist and anti-Semitic “Alt-Right.
More from the Washington Post:
That memo also states that the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will sit on the principals committee only when the issues to be discussed pertain to their “responsibilities and expertise.” In the previous two administrations, both were included as regular attendees.
The White House thinks the changes will make the NSC more adaptive to modern threats. Trump said the changes would bring “a lot of efficiency and, I think, a lot of additional safety.”
The changes affirm the ascent of Bannon, the former executive chairman of Breitbart, a conservative website that is popular with white nationalists, who has emerged as Trump’s political consigliere and the keeper of the president’s populist flame.
Bannon has already been playing a major role in directing Trump’s foreign policy, administration officials say, and joined the president in the Oval Office on Saturday for his calls with Putin and several other world leaders.
So the guy who wants journalists to shut their mouths, made a movie mythologizing Sarah Palin, and ran a hate group disguised as a news outlet, is now sitting on the National Security Council while the DNI is kicked to the curb?
Apparently there is quite literally no end to this nightmare.

ReplyDeleteWhy people are deleting Uber from their phones after Trump’s executive order
#DeleteUber took off on social media on Saturday and Sunday. Here’s why.
...Even though the surge pricing announcement came after the scheduled taxi strike, many people on social media took it to suggest that Uber was trying to break up or counteract the strike and acting in support of — or at least trying to profit off — Trump’s “Muslim ban.”
In response, the Twitter hashtag #DeleteUber quickly took off, with people posting screenshots of them deleting the Uber app from their phones.

ReplyDeleteBecause those that recognize the threat and danger of Trump are the military and if no one acts, they eventually will.
So Republicans are on notice. Do something or something will be done and you may not like the outcome.
In the early 1980's I was on the faculty at the Army's Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Taught a course in national security crisis decision making.
DeleteOne of my lesson series covered actions surrounding Nixon's resignation. The resignation was effective at 12:00 noon, EST, August 9, 1974.
Very little known fact: Twelve hours earlier a message went from the Secretary of Defense through Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the operational commands including the 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg NC. Message stated that as of 12:00 noon EST, 9 Aug 74, orders issued by Richard M. Nixon were not to be recognized.
We came that close.
If I were Trump/Bannon right now, I would be about to send in the false-flag demonstrators to incite or perform violence. (Used to be called "outside agitators.") Then Trump/Bannon would attempt to impose martial law.

Trump Brings Shame to U.S. With Immigration Ban Based on Fear
ReplyDelete...Most of all, Trump’s ban is shameful for the people who have served us. This ban means every single Syrian or Iraqi soldier that fought against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) with the U.S. coalition (most recently in Mosul) will not be allowed to come to the US. All of the interpreters who worked with U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, taking huge risks working for the “occupier,” will be excluded as well.
Alienation Narrative
The real danger of Trump’s extreme vetting plan is that it groups everyone into one category—“radical Islamic terrorist threats”—simply because of their Muslim faith. It means that every Syrian family I interviewed as a consultant for the UN’s Refugee Agency in 2014 will not be allowed to seek safe haven in the US. Yet Christians—who Trump erroneously says had a harder time getting admitted to the U.S. than Muslims—will be given priority. Trump’s 'compassion' extends to Christians in Syria, but it is sharply cut off there.

ReplyDeleteBannon seems to be doing the president’s job, but I don’t recall him being on the ballot.
Did anyone vote for him?
I am very curious about him taking charge and banning green card holders. He is not the president , but I will leave it up to the attorneys to decide whether this was legal or not, maybe his undoing? We can only hope.
By the way, my father was also naval officer and wants to know when he can join the National Security Counsel.
Gannon also does not have a clue about what the Constitution says and he, like Trump, has absolutely no idea about how a government should function. We are in some pickle now?

Steve Bannon, the Trump adviser who helped craft the "Muslim ban," explained
..... Moreover, Bannon’s centralization of authority breeds incompetence
The incompetence is actually good news for people who believe in visa and refugee policies based on criteria other than—let’s not be coy about this—bigotry and religious discrimination,” Ben Wittes, a senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution, writes at Lawfare. He continues:
The President has created a target-rich environment for litigation that will make his policies, I suspect, less effective than they would have been had he subjected his order to vetting one percent as extreme as the vetting to which he proposes to subject refugees from Bashar al-Assad and the bombing raids of Vladimir Putin.
This points to a basic problem for Bannon. His worldview is so extreme, so isolated from what most people who staff the federal government believe, that he’s nearly alone in attempting to push it. So long as he has Trump’s ear, he’ll have the power to make major policy changes — but nobody can do everything well at once.

===================================
Trump’s advisors just proposed privatizing Native American reservations for the worst reason possible
One of the first actions taken by the Donald Trump administration in January may be to privatize Indian reservations for oil drilling.
According to Reuters, a group of advisors for the Trump transition team is suggesting the President-elect privatize roughly 56 million acres of land currently owned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) — an agency within the Department of the Interior — in order to allow access to the estimated $1.5 trillion in oil and gas reserves. The deposits underneath Native land amounts to approximately 20 percent of all total oil and gas reserves in the United States.
http://usuncut.com/climate/trumps-advisors-just-proposed-privatizing-native-american-reservations-worst-reason-possible/
There is also a large swath of Native American land on the border that would prevent the building of his "wall". The only way they could do it would be to TAKE that land.
DeleteIf Trump tries to take Native American lands, what further furor will that engender?
At what point will it tip to impeachment?
I think Melania is correct to stay in New York. He may be back home by Easter.
I have wondered when the Trump administration would declare "war" on Native Americans. Trump has never forgiven Native Americans for their casino ownership which has "deprived" him of more income. Haven't they had enough punishment from the USA over the centuries? Do they really need more?
DeleteWon't the billionaires be satisfied with all of the other federal land they're going to expropriate to hasten climate change with their oil and gas drilling? What climate change doesn't swallow up in coastline, earthquakes will swallow up from fracking and over drilling.
Oh, GOP! What has this country ever done to you that all you care about is destroying it?

White House In Full Defensive Crouch
Could the White House have been unprepared for the backlash to the "extreme vetting" executive order? It beggars belief, but the tone of this new statement directly from the President is defensive (I do too have "compassion" for the "suffering"), wounded ("This is not about religion"), self-justifying (Obama did the same thing!), lashing ("this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting"), and bewildered (Why doesn't the media recognize my good intentions?).
