President Trump signed a presidential memo Friday instructing the Defense Department to stop accepting transgender people who want to enlist in the military.
The memo details Trump's previous Twitter announcement last month that he would reinstate a ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military, and officially requests the Pentagon begin implementing the ban.
Trump’s memo bars transgender people from enlisting, but instructs Secretary of Defense James Mattis to further explore how to handle transgender people currently serving in the armed forces.
The memo also orders the Pentagon to stop paying for gender reassignment surgeries, except in cases that are already in progress to “protect the health of an individual.”
It also requests that the Pentagon develop an implementation plan for the ban by Feb. 21 2018, to be put in place on March 23, 2018.
This was just another terrible thing that Trump did yesterday while most of the media was distracted by Hurricane Harvey.
Trump argued that his decision was based on "national security concerns" but we all know it is just another Obama era policy that he feels compelled to rollback.
Trump's entire presidency is just one giant FUCK YOU to President Obama, and I think it all goes back to that White House Corespondent's Dinner where Obama mocked Trump and had the whole room laughing at him.
Because other than that there is literally no reason that Trump would do something like this.
So if tg Americans can't serve in the military why forced into court juries? Next time I get summoned, I'm using that excuse as my get out of jury duty card permanently.

ReplyDeleteI could also see it on his wife's face: she looked flat-faced, abused; had been through this before and knew what he was capable of. A moment's mocking and now a lifetime (for some people) of dread on what he will do next to avenge Obama.

So in retrospect was that a miscalculation by Obama? Did he screw up and spike the football on Trumps big orange face and in the process set up the undoing of his legacy? Not sure but if that's what happened that was a big unforced error. A good example of being careful who you're unkind to.

ReplyDeleteI would argue that a memo isn't "Official" either. And he left the door open to the military to interpret this information.
ReplyDeleteThey may not take transgender enlistees and they may not pay for surgery but they don't have to kick out any transgender that are already serving.
And no decision has to be made until January 1. Trump might not even be president by January 1.
Of course there is Pence and this is probably Pence's idea. He'll attempt to roll back the entire LGBTQ right to serve.
But the courts will drag it out until Pence isn't president any more either.
BTW he wrote this "memo" on Friday, then made a speech about how he respects the military and veterans who have served our country. Hypocrite with a capital H.

ReplyDeleteWhen he first tweeted about the ban, I read that some conservative members of Congress had been pressuring him to prohibit the military from paying for reassignment surgery. Naturally, without considering the possible ramifications or discussing it with anyone, even in the military itself, Trump took it twenty steps further and made it a global ban on transgender people in the military.

They can be inclusively bundled as Trump voters. On Sunday they go to church. The rest of the week they stomp puppies(figuratively perhaps) and covet their neighbors wife(or husband). ReplyDeleteI'd really like to see some cost comparisons here. For members of the military, is sex-reassignment surgery covered by insurance that the military provides for all service members? How much does the Pentagon actually pay for?
ReplyDeleteHow do these cost ratios compare with, for example, in-vitro fertilization for military and/or spouses or all costs involved with horrific traumatic injury and rehabilitation for our war-wounded (and more sure to come with Trump waving his war-wienie around)?
Prove me wrong, but I think the relatively VERY small needs for gender re-assignment surgery have to be a drop in the bucket in terms of overall costs for medical care.
And when some insurance actuarial somewhere has figured that out, please tell me how any medical costs-per-service-personnel compare to our taxpayer monies wasted to service all the overly-entitled members of the Trump mob.
P.S., please also present dossier on Betsey DeVos' completely overwrought and paranoid need for Secret Service protection.

By contrast, total military spending on erectile dysfunction medicines amounts to $84 million annually, according to an analysis by the Military Times — 10 times the cost of annual transition-related medical care for active duty transgender servicemembers."
If those costs are so wildly disproportionate, you can imagine what the differences are for some of the other comparisons you made. The total defense budget for last year was around 600 billion, so 8 million is pocket change in the grand scheme of things.

DeleteThe military needs to focus on the frauds and theives that are sucking us dry. Take Dakota Meyer, did he get his Medal of Honor because he told the truth? It is obvious that is in dispute and the side of the truth says he lied. There is a video that says he lied. That makes Dakota Meyer a fraud. To ad to that he was co-author of a book. How many lies in that book? Lies of commission and lies of omission, all are lies. He was caught in one lie, the one about Cassandra Wain Meyer. The marriage to Cassie was verified, but no divorce.
It can't be that hard to verify if there is a divorce. So why not?
In any event it is established how Dakota Meyers lies regarding his personal life as well as his military
life.
The military is weak when they won't face up and take care of their mistakes. So Dakota Meyer has a medal he knows he does not deserve. With that medal comes rewards and more honorable events (undeserved but they go on). It does not only cost the military (taxpayers) it costs many others who are suckered into believing lies, the big lie.
It is a crime that the military needs to face up to and do something about.
Leave the people who serve honorably alone.
Go for the evil doers and get them off the fame game money circuit.
Actually the military does NOT pay for surgeries, but they do pay for hormonal drugs that some transgender service members/vets take.

My son is convinced that Trump is going to get us into a stupid and unjustifiable war, and since he's in high school, he'll have to sign up for the draft soon.
