Head of the Trump Campaign's data-analytics firm admits he reached out to Wikileaks for Hillary's deleted emails.

Courtesy of the Daily Beast:

Alexander Nix, who heads a controversial data-analytics firm that worked for President Donald Trump’s campaign, wrote in an email last year that he reached out to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange about Hillary Clinton’s missing 33,000 emails.

On Wednesday, Assange confirmed that such an exchange took place.

Nix, who heads Cambridge Analytica, told a third party that he reached out to Assange about his firm somehow helping the WikiLeaks editor release Clinton’s missing emails, according to two sources familiar with a congressional investigation into interactions between Trump associates and the Kremlin. (CNN later reported Cambridge backer Rebekah Mercer was one of the email's recipients.) Those sources also relayed that, according to Nix’s email, Assange told the Cambridge Analytica CEO that he didn’t want his help, and preferred to do the work on his own.

The interchange between Nix—whose company made millions from the Trump campaign—and Assange represents the closest known connection between Trump’s campaign and Wikileaks.

Aha!

As we know Cambridge Analytica was funded by the Mercer family, and had deep ties with both Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn.

This was the Trump campaign's go to shop for analyzing voter data and formulating a strategy based on what they learned.

However that is an inconvenient reality and therefore the Trump folks must reject it.
Courtesy of Vanity Fair:

When Trump adviser Jared Kushner bragged to Forbes about his role in steering the Trump campaign to victory, he emphasized the merits of its unique data operation. “We brought in Cambridge Analytica,” he said, referring to the Robert Mercer-backed analytics company. “We basically had to build a $400 million operation with 1,500 people operating in 50 states, in five months.” The relationship was lucrative for the firm, too: Between July 29 and December 12 of last year, the Trump campaign reportedly paid Cambridge Analytica $5.9 million, according to Federal Election Commission data. But on Wednesday, after the Daily Beast reported that its C.E.O., Alexander Nix, had reached out to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange with an offer to help release Hillary Clinton’s missing e-mails, Team Trump moved to distance itself from the company.

In a statement, Michael S. Glassner, the Trump campaign executive director, highlighted the operation's reliance on Republican National Committee data. “Once President Trump secured the nomination in 2016, one of the most important decisions we made was to partner with the Republican National Committee on data analytics,” he said. “Leading into the election, the R.N.C. had invested in the most sophisticated data-targeting program in modern American history, which helped secure our victory in the fall. We were proud to have worked with the R.N.C. and its data experts and relied on them as our main source for data analytics.”

Nothing to see here, just move along. Move along dammit!

Apparently the Trump team still thinks there might be too many bread crumbs leading to the campaign's doorstep, so they also made this extraordinary move:

WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of emails apparently hacked from the Democratic National Committee was legal and specifically protected by federal law, the Trump campaign argued in a court filing Wednesday.

Lawyers for the Trump presidential campaign came to the controversial transparency website's defense in a bid to defeat a lawsuit three Democratic activists filed in July accusing Trump's presidential campaign of conspiring to publish sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers and information suggesting that a Democratic National Committee employee was gay.

The Trump campaign's motion to dismiss the case argues that WikiLeaks qualifies as the kind of online service that Congress rendered immune from legal liability through legislation passed more than two decades ago.

Do you know how they say that animals can smell fear?

Yeah, well I think I am getting a whiff of that myself.

"Most troubling, researchers found a suspicious pattern in the White House email system blackouts, including periods when there were no emails available from the office of Vice President Dick Cheney. “That the vice president’s office, widely characterized as the most powerful vice president in history, should have no archived emails in its accounts for scores of days—especially days when there was discussion of whether to invade Iraq—beggared the imagination,” says Thomas Blanton, director of the Washington-based National Security Archive. The NSA (not to be confused with the National Security Agency"
"In 1978, Congress passed the Presidential Records Act (PRA), which mandated that all presidential and vice presidential records created after January 20, 1981, be preserved and that the public, not the president, owned the records."
"The Clinton White House eventually settled the suit, and White House aide John Podesta—now Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman—even invited members of the National Security Archive into the White House to demonstrate how the new system worked. If anyone tried to delete an email, a message would pop up on screen indicating that to do so would be in violation of the PRA."
“Nixonian $toneWalling”" “[T]his subversion of the justice system has included lying, misleading, stonewalling and ignoring the Congress in our attempts to find out precisely what happened. The reasons given for these firings were contrived as part of a cover-up, and the stonewalling by the White House is part and parcel of that same effort.”

John Conyers (D-Mich.), said Bush's assertion of executive privilege was unprecedented and displayed “an appalling disregard for the right of the people to know what is going on in their government.”
"researchers still have years of work to figure out whether Cheney deleted days’ worth of emails around the time of the WMD propaganda campaign that led to WAR, Blanton says." “Our hope is that by that time, the government and the National Archives will have much better technology and tools with which to sift and sort that kind of volume.”Blanton says he’s not expecting that kind of upgrade, though. “Their entire budget is less than the cost of a single Marine One helicopter,” he says. “It’s an underfunded orphan.”
"no major media outlet has devoted significant—or, really, any—resources to obtaining the emails, or to finding out what was in them, or what, exactly, the Bush administration was hiding (or losing)."

The Republican purge has only just begun
Steve Bannon isn’t just trying to tear down the GOP establishment. He wants to build a new one.

Jeff Flake saw the writing on the wall.

Republican senators stood on the floor of the Senate Tuesday afternoon in a somber display, giving Flake a standing ovation as he announced his retirement in a searing speech criticizing President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, seemed overjoyed. "Another day, another scalp,” was his reaction, according to a source close to him interviewed by NBC News.

Incumbent Republican senators are increasingly under fire from the right. Flake was trailing a primary challenger by about 25 points in polls before he called it quits. Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), facing a potential primary threat of his own, announced he’d retire too. And appointed Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) went down to defeat during a primary runoff against outsider Roy Moore.

All three had been targeted for defeat by Bannon, as part of what he recently called his “war against the GOP establishment.” And there are more to come. There will be at most six incumbent Republican senators on the ballot next year. Bannon hopes to target five of them. “They’re heading into a titanic political fight,” says Steve Schmidt, who ran John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008. “And they underestimate it at their peril.”

One Republican consultant with ties to Senate leadership characterized Bannon’s effort as incoherent. “He’s almost like a mad dog chasing a car who doesn’t know why he’s chasing it,” the consultant said.

But conversations with conservative activists, GOP operatives, and people close to Bannon and the White House suggest that the Breitbart executive chair is engaged in a bold, ambitious project that has a relatively clear vision. He doesn’t just want to destroy the old Republican establishment — he wants to build a new one.

Republican elites cheered the right-wing insurgency. Now it’s coming for them.

It’s not just about Trump. Power has shifted markedly toward non-elected figures like Steve Bannon and Sean Hannity.

If this didn’t make me sick to my stomach, I’d laugh. Every time Trump accused Clinton (or any of his rivals) of something nefariousness, you can bet that he was already doing it. What’s so sad and frustrating, his fan club will not believe he did anything wrong, and that everything he did was “winning”. I am sure there will be a day when they all have a rude awakening. By that time it will be too late.

The Trump administration is delaying Russia sanctions that Congress demanded

Congress wants to know why Trump is dragging his feet on Russia sanctions

"I'm going to get on the phone with someone," Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who played a key role negotiating the sanctions bill as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters on Wednesday. The bill was a direct punishment for Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The law, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress and which Trump signed into law in early August, required the administration to identify which Russian entities would be penalized with new sanctions by October 1. They still have not done so. The State Department has said it is “working to complete the process and provide the public guidance to the relevant people just as soon as possible.”

Republicans have stopped short of claiming that the administration’s delays have been strategic. "We're going to check into it,” Corker said. “I don't have any way of evaluating whether it's purposeful or not purposeful."

But it’s no secret that Trump, who has emphasized wanting a warmer relationship with Russia, did not want to sign the bill into law — and did so grudgingly. At the time, he released a statement claiming he is much better at dealmaking than Congress is and angrily tweeted that Republican lawmakers were ruining his relationship with Russia.

Congressional leaders did their due diligence to make sure the administration was aware the legislative branch was tracking the progress of the bill. Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) wrote the president a letter the day before the deadline to press him to fully enact the sanctions bill.

Trump Is So Out Of It That He Doesn’t Even Know Where He Is Going In China

...The 'President' Of The United States is going to be loaded on to Air Force One by one of his handlers, flown to China, and then led around. Trump is making America look bad. He is a tired old man who can’t handle the job. The President should know where he is going. This president especially should know where he is going because he has so little occupying his mind. Trump spends most of his time tweeting, watching Fox News, and playing golf, so one would think that he could squeeze in at least a minimum of curiosity about where he is going.

Sen. Bob Corker nailed it. The White House is now a taxpayer-funded adult daycare center, as out of it Trump doesn’t know where he is going, and doesn’t seem to care.

Republican Congress goes Weekend at Bernie’s with Donald Trump’s rotting carcass

Donald Trump’s presidency is dead. If it wasn’t clear when the week began, there’s no question now. His presidency was officially killed off by this new confirmation that the Trump campaign was seeking to conspire with Russian puppets to commit election hacking crimes. If you want proof of that, just take a look at how the Republican Congress is suddenly pulling a Weekend at Bernie’s trying to temporarily prop up the rotting carcass.

...The Republicans in Congress took one look at Trump’s new Cambridge Analytica scandal with Russian hackers, concluded that he’s a goner, and decided that they have no choice but to find a way to prop him up long enough to pass their tax cuts for the wealthy. Because Trump’s unstable and illegitimate presidency has been dying since the day it was born, the GOP hasn’t been able to do much of anything for its craven base. But the GOP is at least going to divert billions of dollars to its wealthy donors before everything falls apart, because it knows which side its bread is truly buttered on.

That requires propping up the Trump presidency’s rotting carcass for at least a few more weeks so it can take that desperate stab at the tax bill as the walls are caving in.
