The U.S. Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers back on 24-hour ready alert, a status not seen since the Cold War ended in 1991.
That means the long-dormant concrete pads at the ends of this base’s 11,000-foot runway — dubbed the “Christmas tree” for their angular markings — could once again find several B-52s parked on them, laden with nuclear weapons and set to take off at a moment’s notice.
“This is yet one more step in ensuring that we’re prepared,” Gen. David Goldfein, Air Force chief of staff, said in an interview during his six-day tour of Barksdale and other U.S. Air Force bases that support the nuclear mission. “I look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we’re prepared going forward.”
Yes the global situation exacerbated by our dear leader's back and forth chest pounding with a certain North Korean dictator.
And perhaps this is really no reason to become overly concerned, but then you add this to the mix.
Courtesy of Business Insider:
President Donald Trump amended an executive order on Friday to allow the Defense Department to recall up to 1,000 retired pilots in order to address the Air Force's shortage of qualified fliers.
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis reportedly requested the move, and he now has "additional authorities to recall retired aviation officers," Pentagon spokesman Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross said in a statement.
Now once again this is being described as no big deal, and apparently we are simply lacking the number of qualified pilots that we are supposed to have on hand.
But then there is also this:
Executive order 13223 declared a temporary state of emergency after the September 11 attacks and allowed the president to call up the National Guard, hire and fire officers, and delay retirements. It has been renewed by every president since, including Trump, but under the previous version only 25 retired officers could to be called back to active duty. Trump's amendment expands that authority.
Yes, expands it from 25 to 1,000, that does not seem to be a simple over correction.
Okay, I think now would be the appropriate time to become concerned.
This is just dandy. When he isn't flinging about his rattles and poo(and twittering), he can drop a nuke or two. Wonderful. Isn't it great what the ignorant dullards in this country have given us?
ReplyDeleteWhat is this thing with 1,000?

I love that more people are finding out their histories. Both my mother and father's first American ancestors were here in country well before the Revolution and we've traced them back quite a few generations more in their homelands.
DeleteEven though my history as an american is quite long I still travel as a Canadian given the shitshow this nation has become and the hatred that most other nations have for us it's just easier to be from Vancouver :-)
Things are going to Explode! Get ready everyone....WOW

ReplyDelete"There are no immediate signs that the administration is preparing for military action, for instance through evacuations of US military families in South Korea, or with a buildup of troops or materiel.
Yet it is also possible that the hardening of the administration's rhetoric and the narrowing window for diplomacy to work represent a significant moment in the evolution of a crisis that could ultimately define the Trump presidency." Carele$$.
Trumps 2 sperms must be on front line.
ReplyDeleteFat chance of that happening. They inherited daddies “bone spurs”.

DeleteAnd daddys racism. Now why the fuck would you make a plantation style hotel in a predominantly black area in Mississippi. Most likely you wouldn't,unless you where the racist spawn of the pissident.
There's still a ton of that sort of thing in the south, and when they say "plantation style" it simply refers to the architecture. People really need to stop being so knee-jerk sensitive about every.single.thing.

Is that news, that families deserve answers?
DeleteI guess it is really great news that a top U.S. general would inform us. Since no one in America would know something like that in 2017.
Sooooooo
ReplyDeleteAnyone else concerned, very concerned, that something big is gonna happen by Thursday? The Kennedy files are set to be released and Trump has not blocked them. Some people on Warren Commission, like GWHBush are still alive.
My spidey senses are tingling. Not liking this. But, if they kill off Trump and get new president to block the release, I don't know. That is a win lose.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/21/politics/trump-jfk-documents/index.html
DeleteGWHBush was on Warren Commission? My neighbor is in the report, they are deceased now and nothing earth shattering.
DeleteI think next files will be redacted if it is sensitive information.
Speaking of the BUFFs, 5 or 6 years ago some wingnut female author or reporter commented on watching the last B-52 leave Saigon just before the fall of Saigon. Wish I could find that article again, because if she saw a B-52 on the ground anywhere near Saigon it would have to have been one that was shot down. I can find zero evidence that a BUFF ever landed in VietNam anywhere. They were stationed in Thailand, if I remember.
ReplyDeleteOh, memories. Some are even true.
Sorry that you had to go through that conflict. Such a sad time in our history.
DeleteThere is no way China will let us nuke N Korea. Neither would Russia. And I doubt Japan and South Korea would be very happy about it either. They would be the ones dealing most with the nuclear fallout....... Not to mention Alaska.
ReplyDeleteTwodux
Well, if little man is going to lob one over here I'd just as soon us be prepared to strike back with the utmost expediency.
