Courtesy of Bloomberg:
The Justice Department’s decision to give congressional Republicans access to documents about FBI investigations risks exposing sensitive sources or material and poses a critical early test for bureau Director Christopher Wray, current and former U.S. law enforcement officials say.
Some officials view the department as capitulating to a small group of Republicans who are intent on helping President Donald Trump undermine the integrity of the FBI and, by extension, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether Trump or any of his associates helped Russia interfere in the 2016 election.
It’s the latest setback for a law enforcement agency that has long held itself out as doggedly independent and above partisan politics, only to be besieged over the last two years by questions about its handling of politically sensitive investigations into Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Trump.
One agent said he’s now concerned that forms identifying FBI informants would be handed over to Congress. If that happened, he said, it would cause him to think carefully about whether to withhold sensitive information from future reports.
Another agent said recent statements about the bureau by Trump and congressional Republicans have made it more difficult for him to get informants to open up.
Trump has tweeted that the Federal Bureau of Investigations is “in Tatters -- worst in history” and has said a senior official committed “treason.”
The FBI knows full that is it only a matter of time after the Republicans get their hands on the documents, that the leaks and spreading of false information will begin.
Their agenda right now is to protect Donald Trump from the Mueller investigation, and they will burn down the entire American justice system to achieve that goal.
Bet on it.

DeleteTrump Fans Threatened Psychiatrists Who Warned Trump Was Inciting Violence
ReplyDeleteThe doctors were told that it was simply too dangerous to proceed with a public talk about ‘The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump.’
Two psychiatrists who warned that Donald Trump was inspiring violence had their point made, the hard way, when Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) abruptly canceled a planned public meeting with them at a senior center after receiving violent threats about the event.
According to Bandy X. Lee, an associate professor at Yale who was scheduled to speak at the event, Raskin informed her just 24 hours beforehand that it was off, because going forward would have posed “significant safety risks” to attendees.
“Sorry about tomorrow night—we’ve been getting so many threats,” Raskin said, according to Lee, the editor of The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, a controversial collection of essays arguing that Trump’s affinity for violence represents a danger to the public, and a leading member of the National Coalition of Concerned Mental Health Experts (full disclosure: the group’s members include Dr. Claire Silverman, a psychologist and this reporter’s mother) that’s raised public questions about Trump’s fitness for office.
Raskin has roused the ire of Trump supporters since he submitted a bill in April of last year calling for the creation of a committee to evaluate the president’s physical and mental fitness.

BUSTED: Trump’s DOJ used skewed terrorism data to push anti-immigration agenda
ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday, the Department of Justice and Homeland Security released a report claiming that three quarters of people who committed acts of terror in the United States between September 11, 2001 and the end of 2016 are foreign-born — but that data is likely skewed.
...The Beast also noted that “the report’s release appears to have been timed” in conjunction with the Trump administration’s efforts to “to end two U.S. visa programs as a condition of congressional immigration negotiations.” The White House has denied this claim and calls the timing “purely coincidental.”

Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona took to the Senate floor on Wednesday to blast President Donald Trump.
ReplyDeleteFlake compared Trump to former Soviet communist dictator Josef Stalin over his attacks on the press.
“I rise today to talk about truth’s relationship to democracy,” Flake said.
The senator said that objective truth had been “battered” over the past year, with help from “the most powerful person in our government.”
“Mr. President, it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Josef Stalin to describe his enemies,” he said. “It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase ‘enemy of the people,’ that even Nikita Khrushchev forbade its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of ‘annihilating such individuals’ who disagreed with the supreme leader.”
Flake added that “free press is the despot’s enemy.”
“No president will even have dominion over objective reality,” he continued, saying that Trump was “charting a very dangerous path” with his inability to withstand criticism.
“2018 must be a year in which truth takes a stand.”

ReplyDeleteWhen first we practise to deceive!
These lines from a poem by Sir Walter Scott from centuries back ring with TRUTH today. Lies beget lies. It is a lesson we try to teach our children, and remember for ourselves. I wish the current President and his enablers would follow heed.
Something went down at the immigration meeting in the Oval Office with President Trump. What and whom to believe? On the one hand you have Senator Dick Durbin (who was there) and all the respected journalistic outlets with sourced reporting saying that the President used the term "shithole countries." You also have Senator Lindsey Graham (who was also there) in essence confirming it and Senator Jeff Flake confirming that he heard it from people who were there.
On the other hand you have President Trump (who lies as frequently as a tablecloth). You also have two senators - Tom Cotton and David Perdue -who either are playing a game of semantics, convenient amnesia, or outright deception. None of these options are palatable or do service to the institution in which they serve - let alone the country at large.
THIS IS A WAR ON THE TRUTH, with real CONsequences. There has been much debate recently about whether the President is a racist. No one seems to be debating whether he is a liar.
But here's the funny thing when it comes to the TRUTH. It has a way of bursting forth like a dammed river, often in ways that drowns those who have sought to suppress it. It may take time, but I sense that the river of justice is rumbling underfoot."< Dan the man Rather
Wow, I am just glad Flake is going out strong.

'Trump’s Become a Threat to America'
ReplyDelete" Division is his goal, and he places responsibility for the complicated problems we face on Hispanics, women, Muslims, immigrants, and foreign competitors who have duped our witless leaders. It’s an argument that appeals to base instincts, but lacks any basis in fact. The type of divisions that Trump sows endangers the future of our nation." "new book, How Democracies Die, the political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt argue that Trump is the only man who has been elected president who “tested positive” on the four warning signs of an authoritarian personality. These include the rejection of democratic norms; an unwillingness to recognize the legitimacy of political opposition; a tolerance for violence; and a willingness to curtail the civil liberties of those with whom they disagree. This last element has become increasingly clear, as the President repeatedly undermines our system of checks and balances, attacking the media, the courts and his political opponents as purveyors of “fake news.”"
