Real Time returned last night and Bill Maher wasted no time in courting controversy by talking about the #MeToo movement.

Maher is making some very good points here, that I think a number of us have also discussed in the past.

The #MeToo movement is overall a very positive thing, but it can render itself completely ineffective if those participating do not exercise a little objectivity.

No doubt even Bristol is smart enough to not join in a meaningless herd of stupid sheep nutcase women wearing stupid hats walking around aimlessly for some totally undefined 'something'. All they know is they are supposed to be mad. All the poor husbands of these nutjob women, that is who I feel for.

In One Year, Trump Dismantled Reproductive Rights Around The World

...In a single year, President Donald Trump has already decimated reproductive rights and access to family planning in the U.S. and around the globe. He reinstated and massively expanded the Global Gag Rule, restricting $8.8 billion in U.S. foreign aid funding for international health programs that provide or even mention abortion. He defunded the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a global maternal health organization that provides contraception and pregnancy care to low-income women in 150 countries. The group had relied on U.S. money to help to prevent 295,000 unsafe abortions ― a leading cause (13 percent) of maternal deaths around the world.

International health workers are already seeing the effects of Trump’s policies on women and girls.

“Girls aren’t able to get contraception, and they’re starting to come back pregnant, suicidal, bereft,” said Lisa Shannon, a global women’s rights advocate who works with reproductive health clinics in East Africa. “They’re desperate, and they’ll do whatever it takes. The only difference here is that the women will die from unsafe abortions.”

How exactly is the discontinuation of using our money..... given to other countries for ANY procedure including abortion, dismantling reproductive rights? How have any reproductive "rights" been taken away? They can still get pregnant and deal with it any way they want? They can also maybe learn some responsibility when it comes to rolling the dice, or using some form of contraception?

In other words, why is this our problem?

Anonymous 10:07, that's pretty short sighted of you. Social disruption and unrest anywhere in the world affects us. Just ask the Pentagon, you know, our much vaunted MILITARY.

OUR money? You mean the natural resources we've raided/stolen from those blah countries fair and square? (That's snark in case you are snark challenged.) Why should we treat those blah people over there with any human decency? It's all their fault for having natural human instincts for reproduction. (more snark) It appears that the common human decency marker was left out of your DNA.

952 - Show us your work as to why the Democratic Party is to blame for the government shutdown by a Republican President backed by a majority Republican Senate & House of Representatives. I'm all aquiver to see how you twist yourself into a pretzel to explain this one.

Did you know multiple bipartisan offers were on the table only to be rejected by hardliner Rethiglicans or Lord Dampnut himself. Sen Schumer even offered money for the wall *trump needs to build for his base.

Please.... You must have something to back you up or are you drunk on all those liberal tears you keep crowing about drinking because they taste so sweet.

Midterms are coming. The sleeping giantess has been awoken. Woe be to those who stand in her way.

The Trump administration is extending an emergency declaration for the opioid crisis after accomplishing little under the order since it was announced three months ago. A notice posted to the HHS website Friday said acting Secretary Eric Hargan would extend the public health emergency, which was originally declared in late October. The order was originally set to expire Tuesday.

Anonymous 9:51, Just so we are clear... we are NOT blaming the opioid crisis on the Trump administration. We ARE blaming the Trump administration* for how they are handling their response to it and their response to it in the midst of the #trumpshutdown. BIG difference.

  13. Why are so many of the comments posted here off-topic?

Bill Maher is an entertainer I sometimes find offensive, and I believe that generally his comedic talent is over-rated.

But I think he makes a strong point here, as did Matt Damon. Minnie Driver's viewpoint defies common sense. And I'm glad that Ashley Banfield compared and contrasted the "bad date" a woman had with Aziz Ansari, with the horror of criminal sexual assault.

Full disclosure, I'm a woman who has been around the block more than a few times. I know the difference between rape and having some loser flash his schlong.

I agree that some objectivity is needed in the craze to support the "#MeToo" movement. Writer Margaret Atwood became the 21st century's feminists' hero when these young women finally got around to reading "A Handmaid's Tale" or maybe they just saw the television series just made. But when Atwood asked that some objectivity be used in some of the accusations made, she was vilified for it. Well, I'm a woman just a bit older that Atwood and I agree with her 100%.

I was dismayed when Democratic women senators went after Al Franken. I wish they had used that energy for going after things that the Trump administration is doing to the country and the world instead. They should have been shouting from the rooftops about the tax scam bill then under consideration, about the plans to dismantle Medicaid, Medicare and the ACA, about the desperate need to fund the CHIP program, about the ever looming dangers of nuclear war. They squandered their rare moment of headline news to attack a colleague who has supported them and the issues they care about. I hope that someday they will all apologize to him.

I was also dismayed when American Public Radio obliterated Garrison Keillor who did so much for St. Paul/Minneapolis public radio over the decades. About a month ago, segment on the PBS ancestry program about Keillor never aired. It just disappeared - as if he never existed.

There are huge issues involving women' rights that should have been addressed long ago and that still need to be resolved but it will all come to nothing if we continue to ignore the importance of "some objectivity."
