Courtesy of Raw Story:Sen Durbin this morning stands by his previous comments about what Pres Trump said in DACA meeting pic.twitter.com/AAgCEfBCJW— Tony Arnold (@tonyjarnold) January 15, 2018
While speaking to reporters, Durbin called on the White House to release the tapes of a White House meeting in which Trump reportedly referred to African nations as “shitholes”.
Durbin also pushed back against some Republicans who claim that Trump used the term “shithouse” instead of “shithole.”
“I know what happened,” Durbin said, noting that he attended the Oval Office meeting on immigration reform. “I stand behind every word that I said.”
“I don’t know that changing the word from ‘hole’ to ‘house’ changes the impact,” the Illinois Democrat observed. “I don’t think a majority of Americans agree with the president whichever word that he used. I don’t believe that a majority of the Republican Party agrees with the president, whichever word that he used.”
Durbin said that he is “stunned that this is their defense.”
“I don’t know if there was some other recording device in use within the Oval Office,” Durbin added. “If there was, I just want to call on the White House right now, release whatever you have.”
There is no recording device, because I can guarantee that Trump does not want a permanent record of the things he says behind closed doors.
And in what universe is referring to a country as a "shithouse" more acceptable than calling it a "shithole?"
Apparently these remarks irritated the Tangerine Fuhrer and he took to Twitter to respond.
So let me get this straight.Senator Dicky Durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the DACA meeting. Deals can’t get made when there is no trust! Durbin blew DACA and is hurting our Military.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 15, 2018
It now hurts the military when people call Trump out for being a racist?
Or did I read that wrong?

ReplyDeleteMedia Shocked That Republican Senators Are Unabashed Liars Just Like Their House Counterparts
ReplyDeleteIf there was one recurring theme I heard over and over Monday morning on cable news following the disgusting performances of Senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue on the Sunday gab fests, it's that everyone was shocked!... shocked I tell you that members of the Senate would toss aside the "decorum" and lie about one of their counterparts the way Cotton and Perdue did with Dick Durbin.
That type of behavior is supposed to be reserved for House members, don't ya know.
While they generally don't come on the air and attack each other by name, they're no better than their counterparts in the House when it comes to making appearances on television and just telling bald faced lies. They lie about Trump. They lie about their tax cuts and who they benefit. They lie about Iran. They lie about Hillary Clinton and President Obama. They lie about health care. They lie about Social Security. They lie about torture.
And they're going to continue to lie because there's no penalty for it.

Trump has revealed who he is. Now it’s our turn.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is necessary to begin with the obvious. The claim that America needs more Norwegian immigrants and fewer Africans from “shithole countries” is racist. It is not the same as arguing for a higher-skilled immigrant pool. That argument might go something like: “We need a higher-skilled immigrant pool.”
President Trump, according to the compelling weight of evidence, treated African countries (along with Haiti and some other nations) as places of misery filled with undesirable people. That is a prejudice based on a stereotype rooted in invincible ignorance. Why not assume that men and women arriving from poor, oppressed and dangerous countries would love the United States all the more? Because, well, they are those kind of people. What kind of people? The ones who don’t look like Norwegians.
On this issue, Trump has not earned a single benefit of the doubt. His racial demagoguery in the Central Park Five case . . . his attribution of Kenyan citizenship to Barack Obama . . . his references to Mexican migrants as rapists and murderers . . . his unconstitutional attempt at a Muslim ban . . . his moral equivocation following the deadly protests in Charlottesville . . . his statement, reported by the New York Times, that Nigerians would never “go back to their huts” after seeing America . . . all of these constitute an elaborate pattern of bigotry. Trump makes offhand racist comments, he promotes racist stereotypes and he incites racism as a political strategy.
And still it is difficult for me to write the words: “The president of the United States is a racist.” The implications are horrible, but unavoidable. For starters, it means the president is blind to the contributions of African migrants to our country. It means that the president has undermined U.S. foreign policy across a strategic continent, and in the process, alienating people disproportionately prone to like the United States and respect its global role. It means that many Americans of color understandably view Trump as the president of white America, sharpening a legacy of distrust that will not quickly fade. Conversely, it means bigots also view Trump as the president of white America, providing energy and legitimacy to some of the worst people in the country.

Delete"Per the Wall Street Journal, the extremely pro-life attorney general Jeff Sessions has authorized the federal death penalty for the first time since George W. Bush was in office. Despite the fact that, according to a recent Gallup poll, public support of the death penalty has hit an all-time low, Sessions’s decision is not a surprise.
That’s because he is a bit of a death penalty enthusiast. As the New York Times notes, when he was Alabama’s attorney general, he pursued the death penalty for the mentally disabled, as well as for people who had bad lawyers, bad prosecutors, and bad juries filled with racists. He tried to expand the crimes subject to capital punishment—even possibly including pot dealers. He also tried to speed up executions, despite the fact that, by some counts, at least 4% of the people on death row are innocent and proving innocence can take time.
While the administration calls itself pro-life, and the Republicans are traditionally the party advocating for smaller government, that apparently does not extend to the government taking a life for a crime someone may or may not have committed. ML"
Sens. Cotton and Perdue are outed for lying on Trump’s behalf
ReplyDeleteThere is no honor among anti-immigrant advocates and liars, I suppose. After dutifully lying on behalf of the president regarding his abhorrent language (“shithole countries”), Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) were outed by the White House. The Post reports:
Three White House officials said Perdue and Cotton told the White House that they heard “shithouse” rather than “shithole,” allowing them to deny the president’s comments on television over the weekend. The two men initially said publicly that they could not recall what the president said.
Not only did these two repeatedly lie, but Cotton also impugned the integrity of Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), who told the truth. Asked whether the accusation that Trump spoke the offending words or the sentiment was phony, Cotton lied, “Yes.” He went on to say, “Senator Durbin has misrepresented what happened in White House meetings before, and he was corrected by Obama administration officials by it.”
Honorable men would resign after such a remarkable revelation of their crummy character; neither Cotton nor Perdue will.
...The incident is telling in many respects, but none more important for Republicans than this: They can lie and enable the president hoping to score brownie points, but this White House won’t repay loyalty in kind. Instead, Republicans will find themselves humiliated.
...Democrats have every reason to shame and shun these two Republicans, who have behaved in such a nakedly partisan and dishonest fashion. I’d like to think that all senators would, but we already know how deep the tribal instinct runs.
As for Trump, the more details that emerge, the more nakedly racist and dishonest he appears.

Raging, isolated Trump retreats deeper into his bubble
ReplyDelete...But it gets worse: The Post also reports that Trump was originally favorable towards the deal, but the anti-immigration hardliners around him intervened, on the grounds that it would supposedly be “damaging” to Trump and “would hurt him with his political base.” This included (unsurprisingly) Stephen Miller and even (disturbingly) Chief of Staff John F. Kelly. After that, The Post reports, Trump began telling friends that the agreement was “a terrible deal for me.”

ReplyDeleteUninsured Population Increases By 3.2 Million In Trump’s First Year In Office
ReplyDeleteOver the course of President Donald Trump’s first year in office, the number of Americans without health insurance increased 1.3 percent—with 3.2 million more people uninsured, according to Gallup’s latest tracking report published Tuesday.
It’s the largest one-year increase in the uninsured population since Gallup began the survey in 2008.
The study noted “several factors” swelling the ranks of the uninsured, from increased premiums caused by insurance companies dropping out of the individual market to uncertainty around whether the Trump administration would enforce the individual mandate’s penalty for forgoing health insurance. Exacerbating both factors, the GOP-controlled Congress repealed the individual mandate in December, which is expected to hike premiums by an additional 10 percent or more.
Premiums also went up significantly in 2017 when the Trump administration cut off cost-sharing reduction payments to insurance companies, though the vast majority of people on the individual market were shielded from the increase by a bump in their federal tax credits.
Though the uninsured rate remains well below the high of 18 percent—the year before the Affordable Care Act went into effect—the increase in 2017 is the first reversal of several years of decline. And Gallup predicts that the trend will continue, with more people dropping or losing their insurance coverage in the years to come.

bribing a small child
On MSNBC’s The Last Word, Lawrence O’Donnell took apart Trump’s statement that he is the least racist person to reveal a president who is not only racist but also a pathological liar who isn’t sane.
ReplyDeleteVideo:
...O’Donnell said, “That I can tell you. With the nod. That I can tell you. That is one of Donald Trump’s many tells. Whenever he says, that I can tell you, he is lying. Believe me is another one of his tells. Whenever he says, believe me, you know he’s lying. When he’s lying, he reaches for that little something extra. The crazier the lie, the more he needs the believes me or that I can tell you. So one of the most overtly racist presidents since the abolition of slavery says I’m not racist. Because he’s a pathological liar, he could never be content with no, no, I am not a racist. That’s what he first said. The reason he’s not content with that sentence is because it does not sound believable, even to him. And so, the twisted mind of the used car salesman, real estate salesman, casino operator, hustler is always trying to lay something on top of a simple statement of fact that simply does not sound believable. Like Donald Trump saying, no, no, I am not a racist. It is because Donald Trump knows that that does not sound believable that he goes to the utterly insane length of adding the utterly insane statement, I am the least racist person. And because he is, and has been for decades, a deeply dysfunctional pathological liar, he has no idea that saying, I am the least racist person not only does not sound believable, it does not sound sane. Would a sane person ever say that? Would someone who is not a racist ever say, I am the least racist person? It never makes sense to say you are the most or least anything.”
It was such a simple statement from Trump, but as O’Donnell pointed out, it said so much about how far detached Donald Trump is from reality. Trump like the way other people breathe. The President Of The United States can’t separate fact from fiction. Trump knew that he was lying when said that he was the least racist person, but Donald Trump is driven by the constant compulsion to sell himself as the best at everything, so it wasn’t enough for Trump to say that he isn’t racist. He had to be the least racist person ever.

Inside the tense, profane White House meeting on immigration
ReplyDelete...Attendees who were alarmed by the racial undertones of Trump’s remarks were further disturbed when the topic of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) came up, these people said.
At one point, Durbin told the president that members of that caucus — an influential House group — would be more likely to agree to a deal if certain countries were included in the proposed protections, according to people familiar with the meeting.
Trump was curt and dismissive, saying he was not making immigration policy to cater to the CBC and did not particularly care about that bloc’s demands, according to people briefed on the meeting. “You’ve got to be joking,” one adviser said, describing Trump’s reaction.
White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly was in the room and was largely stone-faced, not giving any visible reaction when Trump said “shithole countries” or when he said Haitians should not be part of any deal, White House advisers said.
At one point, Graham told Trump he should use different language to discuss immigration, people briefed on the meeting said.
As Trump batted back the Democrats, he was urged on by Republican lawmakers. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) told Graham and Durbin their proposal would not fly, and he told the group they should instead embrace his more conservative bill. Durbin was not interested, White House officials said.
After Graham left, he told associates that he was disturbed by what he heard in the Oval Office, according to people who spoke with him, and that it was evident the deal’s antagonists had gotten to Trump. Graham and Durbin also told allies that they were stunned that the other lawmakers were present — and that Trump’s tone seemed so different than it had been days or even hours before, according to people close to them.
...Trump was not particularly upset by the coverage of the meeting and his vulgarity after it was first reported by The Washington Post, calling friends and asking how they expected it to play with his political supporters, aides said.
“Everyone was saying it would help with the base,” which would agree with his characterization, one person who spoke with the president said.
