Steve Bannon told lawmakers investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election that the White House instructed him not to answer questions related to his tenure as a top White House adviser, prompting a rare subpoena to compel testimony, multiple congressional sources tell NBC News.
The former Breitbart executive and now-spurned Trump confidante spent more than 11 hours on Capitol Hill to testify before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, the first of three high-profile witnesses expected before the panel this week.
Rep. Mike Conway, R-Texas, who is overseeing the panel’s Russia probe, said they expect additional testimony from Bannon after further discussions with the White House over what lawmakers in both parties considered an overly broad claim of executive privilege.
However as confidant as this might have made the White House feel, sources claim that Bannon will not defy the Mueller subpoena.
Courtesy of the Daily Beast:
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon broke some bad news to House investigators Tuesday, announcing that the White House had invoked executive privilege to keep him from answering many of their questions.
But executive privilege—the president’s right to keep certain information from the public so he can have frank conversations with aides—will not keep Steve Bannon from sharing information with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, according to a person familiar with the situation.
“Mueller will hear everything Bannon has to say,” said the source, who is familiar with Bannon’s thinking.
Not sure what game Bannon is playing here as it seems very unlikely that Trump will ever invite him back into the inner circle.
But we certainly know what game Robert Mueller is playing. He isn't.
And just today it was revealed that Bannon has reached a deal with the Mueller team.
Courtesy of CNN:
Steve Bannon has struck a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller's team and will be interviewed by prosecutors instead of testifying before the grand jury, two people familiar with the process told CNN. He is expected to cooperate with the special counsel, the sources said.
It appears that Steve Bannon realizes that Mueller is not playing games as well.
"Steve Bannon reportedly hinted that the Trump campaign was willing to collude with Russian intelligence officials during his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday."

Kelly’s claim directly contradicts reporting on Bannon’s marching orders. From the podium today, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders seemed to suggest a need to consult with the White House."

2/ Four possibilities: Bannon tries to quash the subpoena and fails; Bannon ignores the subpoena and is found in contempt until he testifies; Bannon testifies and pleads the Fifth; Bannon testifies freely, under oath, and incriminates others.
The last is BY FAR the most likely.

I’m ok with Bannon not answering questions to the House Intel Committee. Anything he says there would go straight to Trump via his little lapdog Devin Nunes. It’s better if Bannon tells all to Mueller & his grand jury, because then Trump will have no idea what Bannon said.

Eric Trump Just Screwed Up Bigly On Fox News Defending Trump’s Racism (Video)
ReplyDeleteThe argument that “my father can’t possibly be racist because he’s a sociopathic narcissist whose sole motivation is to increase his personal wealth” is not exactly a convincing rebuttal to the accusation that “your father is a racist because he called nations where black people live “‘shitholes’ and then said that he would rather more white people moved to our country.”
On top of that, the argument is demonstrably false, since Donald Trump was investigated by the FBI for racial discrimination in the 1970s when he specifically refused to rent or sell apartments to black families. Their money wasn’t green enough for him.

Michael Wolff's 'Fire and Fury' to Become TV Series (Exclusive)
ReplyDelete...To date, rights to the book have been sold in 32 countries. It is currently the best-selling book of any genre worldwide. (A Spanish-language edition is set for Feb. 28, with subsequent takes in Arabic, Albanian, Portuguese, Bulgarian, Japanese, French, German and other languages also planned.)
Fire and Fury comes to the small screen after HBO canceled a planned series based on the 2016 election in what was poised to be a Game Change sequel of sorts. The pay cabler scrapped the project after sexual harassment allegations emerged regarding source material co-author Mark Halperin, who was poised to pen the script alongside John Heilemann. That opened the door for a Trump tell-all, with demand high for Fire and Fury given Wolff’s cinematic writing and fly-on-the-wall detail.

Fighting fire with fire, eh stupid WAPO writer?
What Wolffe did was a HUGE service to this country. Fucking brilliant sleuthering, right under their noses. What, a writer isn't allowed to change the title of their book? A 'working title' is just simply that. The final title goes through huge changes and tests and marketing groups and so much more.
I'm calling Wolffe, Deepthroat, in plain sight.
CAN. NOT. WAIT. until this TV show hits. Right around the midterms would be about perfect timing and then have reruns during 2020 election, if he's still stealing the White House by then.
"“It’s a conspiracy,” Lichtman said. “I believe we have the tip of the iceberg of what the special counsel knows about the relationship between Trump and the Trump team and the Russians. There’s a fair chance that the reason they were covering up all of those calls from then to be national security adviser with the Russians was to cover up a possible quid pro quo, the Russians will help us and in turn we’ll ease those sanctions. Why else make those calls and why else lie about them?”
ReplyDelete"“I wouldn’t keep saying collusion isn’t a crime,” Lichtman said. “Of course not, but taking things of value from foreign nationals is a crime, aiding and abetting illegal computer hacking is a crime, negotiating as a private citizen with a hostile foreign power with which there is disputes is a crime. If this is serious enough, and I’ve taken a lot of flak for that, I think there even could be charges of treason. After all, Russia was waging war against us — not a war with bombs and bullets, but a cyber attack, an online attack designed to destroy democracy.”"

James Taylor Sings "Fire and Fury" ("Fire and Rain" Parody)
ReplyDelete“James Taylor debuts “Fire and Fury” - a parody of his classic “Fire and Rain.” Full Lyrics below:
Just yesterday morning, Breitbart announced you were gone.
Bannon, the tell-all book put an end to you.
Thought you were besties, but I guess I was wrong,
Shouldn’t have dissed Trump’s ass in those interviews.
I've seen fire and I've seen fury.
I've seen White House staff who will have to face a jury.
I've seen him drink a cup of water with tiny hands,
While he's lyin' in bed watching "Fox and Friends."
Bannon hated Don Jr., for disrupting his plans,
Called him unpatriotic and treasonous.
Trump heard about that, and Bannon got canned,
Cuz Trump's, like, a really smart stable genius.
Whoa, I've seen fire and I've seen fury,
I've seen so many tweets that my eyes are getting blurry.
Even his own wife and kids thought he would lose,
Now he's throwin' a damn awards show for fake news.
He's been goin' to bed at 6 p.m., up at 3 a.m. to tweet,
Lord knows when he's on his phone, he can throw a fit, y'know.
And he has a light snack of six Big Macs, while he's watchin' three TV's,
He's turned the White House into a total shithole.
Whoa, I've seen fire and I've seen fury,
I just wish Robert Mueller would friggin’ hurry.
And this time I’ll be the one who calls Putin,
Cuz in 2020, Oprah…she’s gonna win.
Thought I'd vote Oprah this time again, there's an election
Coming our way in three more years,
Vote for Oprah, vote for Oprah, yeah yeah.

Well, the vast majority of the Irish immigrants of the 19th century would not have been allowed in then. Catholics were not allowed to be educated and were forbidden to speak Gaelic, the native language of ireland. Besides apparently most immigrants from these "shithole" countries, to use Trump's descriptive term are far from illiterate. They're educated and go on to become more educated once here. We have dear friends who came from Kenya in the 1970's; he was a well-known political science professor and she worked as a school psychologist before retirement. Their two children are well educated adults now. Their family represents what is best in this country. I hate to think how they feel when they read such statements. It all smacks too much of Hitler's Germany in the early 1930's.

Bannon’s Atty Relayed Questions To White House Amid House Intel Interview
ReplyDeleteSteve Bannon’s attorney relayed questions, in real time, to the White House during a House Intelligence Committee interview of the former Trump chief strategist, people familiar with the closed-door session told The Associated Press.
As lawmakers probed Bannon’s time working for President Donald Trump, Bannon’s attorney Bill Burck was asking the White House counsel’s office by phone during the Tuesday session whether his client could answer the questions. He was told by that office not to discuss his work on the transition or in the White House.
It’s unclear who Burck was communicating with in the White House or whether it was top White House lawyer Don McGahn, who Burck is also representing in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The conversations were confirmed by a White House official and a second person familiar with Bannon’s interview. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Bannon refused to answer a broad array of queries from the House Intelligence Committee about his time working for Trump, leading the committee chairman to authorize a subpoena.
Lawmakers were expecting a similar fight Wednesday with Trump’s White House as another senior aide, Rick Dearborn, appears for a private interview with committee.
The developments brought to the forefront questions about White House efforts to control what current and former aides tell Congress about their time in Trump’s inner circle, and whether Republicans on Capitol Hill would force the issue.

How is this not ILLEGAL???
DeleteO/T but have to say this about the Bob Dole Congressional Gold Medal ceremony. I watched it on C-SPAN. Trump was the final speaker. Then came the Senate Chaplain's benediction. After Trump spoke, he went back to his seat that was right next to Dole’s and he stood there beaming as he looked out upon the standing and applauding crows. He waved a couple times and mouthed a thank-you a few times as he smiled. He thought the applause was for him. It was for Dole. Sure, a certain amount of clapping was for Trump—actually, his words about Dole, just as it was after each speaker--but Trump stood there as if everyone was honoring him. Everyone knew he was the final speaker. They had a printed program, but even without looking at it they knew he was the final speaker. This was the final applause to honor Dole with before the benediction. It was an extended applause and everyone stood. Trump acted like he was finally ready to sit down, like he’d been praised enough, and he went to sit down but then changed his mind and remained standing and took in the praise—what he thought was for him—some more. Then he sat down. He surely expected others to now sit because he, their king, had sat down. No one else sat. They remained standing. They knew they were supposed to stand because it was the end of the program and time for the blessing. And they stood because Dole is an old man who is gaunt and in a wheelchair and this might have been their last opportunity to honor him. Trump sat. Then the announcer told everyone to “please remain standing” for the chaplain’s benediction. Trump stayed seated. A few seconds later he realized he had to get up and stand for the blessing.

The Russia Investigation Is Looking Into Hundreds Of “Suspicious” Transactions Involving Russian Diplomats
ReplyDeleteSpecial counsel Robert Mueller and his team have uncovered hundreds of suspicious transactions involving Russian diplomats in the U.S. and are currently analyzing them, according to a BuzzFeed News report.
Among these diplomats is former Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, whose name has been central to the Russia scandal because of his contact with multiple people in Trump’s camp during the 2016 campaign.
Ten days after Trump’s election victory, Kislyak received $120,000 in a transaction marked “payroll.” The activity was flagged as suspicious by banks, since it didn’t match up with the pattern established by previous payments.
One other suspicious transaction, which took place five days after Trump was sworn into office, was a person’s attempt to withdraw $150,000 from the account of the U.S.-based Russian embassy.

Bannon Strikes Deal With Mueller’s Team: Will Now Be Questioned By Prosecutors Instead Of Testifying Before Grand Jury
ReplyDeleteAccording to CNN, Trump’s former adviser and campaign strategist Steve Bannon has come to an agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team in the Russia investigation. Instead of having to testify in front of a grand jury, he’ll be questioned by prosecutors.

‘Someone’s trying to hide something’: Ex-Watergate prosecutor explains why White House is trying to muzzle Bannon
ReplyDelete...Ackerman explained that Congressional testimony presents more exposure for Bannon. Everything he tells Congress will go to special counsel Robert Mueller’s grand jury. Mueller’s investigation, on the other hand, would not be leaking information the other way.
“The only conclusion you can really draw from that,” said Ackerman, “is that someone is trying to hide something, to cover up something.”
He went on to say that much of the sensitive testimony seems to revolve around former national security adviser Mike Flynn and his secret contacts with Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.
“They may make the reasonable decision just to put him in the grand jury,” Ackerman said. “Because remember, the wild card is Michael Flynn. They know what Michael Flynn has said.”

Bannon ‘slipped up’ during hearing — and revealed inside information about Trump-Russia meeting: report
ReplyDelete...This was a key mistake, and sources say that both Republicans and Democrats hammered Bannon for admitting to having these conversations during his time in the White House and then quickly clamming up when asked followup questions about them.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) was particularly aggressive with Bannon and grilled him about his description of Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with Russian officials in Trump Tower as “treasonous.”
“Gowdy asked Bannon whether he would consider it treason for somebody close to him to approach Wikileaks’ Julian Assange to get opposition research on Hillary Clinton,” writes Axios reporter Jonathan Swan. “Bannon replied that such a scenario would be bad judgment. Then Gowdy produced emails from a Cambridge Analytica employee — the Trump campaign data firm closely affiliated with Bannon — boasting of just such contacts with Assange.”

ReplyDelete'Rep. Swalwell said on MSNBC’s Deadline: White House, “Yesterday we saw in our committee I believe the most aggressive effort by the white house to obstruct our effort to get the truth. Steve Bannon claimed that the White House is asserting three privileges. One, that he cannot talk about anything that occurred during the transition. That has never been upheld or asserted before. Two, that he can’t talk about anything during his time with the executive branch. Now, there are some privileges that exist there, but they took it as far to mean if he had a drink at a bar and talked to a friend about anything in the world, we couldn’t ask him about that. And then third, the most stunning assertion was that even once Steve Bannon left the white house in August of 2017, any conversations he had with the president that he was asked about that he could not relay what he had said. And so it’s quite concerning, we’re a nation — we have a rule of law and the White House is seeking to muzzle witnesses.”'
Seems to me the White House is walking a very fine line of obstruction.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile both Bannon and Mueller got exactly what they wanted. Mueller is going to get a lot of dirt and Bannon is going to get a lot of sweet revenge behind closed doors. Trump will have no idea what Bannon is telling Mueller, but he’ll be sweating bullets guessing what and how bad it will be.
Bannon is too smart to think Trump will forgive him or welcome him back into the fold. He knows Trump too well.
Even if Trump took Bannon back, it would only look like Bannon was being paid off to keep his mouth shut.
