Hurry get him off the stage, they're asking questions. |
Exactly one year ago today, Donald Trump held the first formal solo news conference of his presidency.
He hasn't held a single one since.
That puts him dead last among the group of recent presidents. In his first year in office, President Barack Obama held 11 formal news conferences while his predecessor, George W. Bush, held four. Bill Clinton held 14. George H.W. Bush held a whopping 26! (All of these stats come courtesy of Michael Calderone's terrific "Morning Media" newsletter.)
Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the press and the standard conventions of how a president interacts with the media. More so than any president that has come before him, Trump utilizes the media -- and his base's hatred of it -- to his political advantage.
The fact that he hasn't held a solo news conference in a full year will be greeted with joy by many of Trump's backers. Good, they will say. You media jackals are only out to get him!
Which, of course, isn't true. And misses the broader point of why presidential press conferences are important for a healthy democracy.
The President -- be it Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Tyler, Monroe or Washington -- is a hugely powerful figure. Decisions he makes have profound impacts on real peoples' lives. From what Trump does -- if anything -- in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting to his tax policy to immigration to a hundred other big and small decisions he makes on a daily basis, it all matters. Bigly.
Say it with me folks, "Snowflake!"
I cannot believe that Trump's supporters bought that bullshit tough guy image of his.
This is by far the weakest, most cowardly, and least effective president that we have seen in over a hundred years.
Trump doesn't want to be POTUS, and 65 million Americans voted for Hillary in 2016. However, there is just too much money invested and connected to the old orange orangutan to remove him from office just yet.
ReplyDeleteWeakest, most cowardly, and least effective supporters too! We all know at least one and, in my experience, scared of their own shadow.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt, from intelligent folks. Trump has major self esteem issues.
ReplyDeleteHe is clearly an embarrassment .I have lost all respect for anyone that I am aware supports and voted for him.
All of that is irrelevant to his base. As long as Dotard continues his racist, misogynistic, nativist policies, they will continue to support him.
ReplyDeleteTrump is AFRAID of doing a news conference, because he knows that EVERY REPORTER IN THE ROOM knows more about issues, policy, history, current events, and Congress than he does
ReplyDeleteTrump is afraid to look like an idiot in front of people, because that's exactly what he is
Trump has learning disabilities and is only semi-literate, so he's afraid to actually mix it up with people who might ask hard questions
Trump has lived his whole life (prior to Presidency) in a self made bubble where he can abuse, denigrate, scream at, grope, assault, or demean any person he doesn't like. As President he can't get away with that, so he withdraws like Eeyore into his dondkey hole depression
Trump has an incessant need to be worshiped and praised, and anyone not doing that is instantly seen as an enemy, because in many ways Trump is like a 4 year old child.
I doubt that even if Mueller produces rock solid evidence of obstruction or crimes, that Ryan will move to impeach. Even if Dems take the Senate this year, it's pretty much certain Trump is going to be in office til Jan 20, 2021.
Given that reality, each of us must do everything possible to resist!

Delete'Bristol Palin is on team Mike Pence'
DeleteDo you think she knows who Mike Pence is? I doubt she has a clue about anything Sarah has written in her name.
Bristol has some serious issues, I don't care how they try to hide it. Spreads her legs for anyone and cannot cut the apron strings from Mommie. Always comes bawling back home when things don't go her way.
DeleteI think this has less to do with his disdain for the press and more to do with he just can't do it. His handlers KNOW he can't do it. He can't handle answering off the cuff questions with anything but he tired recycled platitudes or simply ignoring the question. Anything else and it's foot in mouth disease big time. And it just provides more hypocritical fodder to future perjury. He already can't explain contradicting himself. No one is going to allow him to contribute more to it.
ReplyDeleteWhy his handlers did not want him to testify on anything. "Obstruction and perjury trap." No shit?!?!
DeleteDoes it really matter, it would be all lies and insults anyway, he can do that on twitter.
ReplyDeleteAll it would serve is to have a record of his stupidity and we have twitter for that.
Besides, little donnie can't answer questions on his own without having the questions before hand.
He wouldn't answer the questions and it would just give him free air time to campaign to his base.
Pig!
ReplyDeleteLike he is coherent. Dipsheet is demented. Drugged up dog. Impeach today!!
On Bill Mahar last night, he said Trump was still untouchable. What does he mean by that?
ReplyDeleteIs it because the Evangelicals aka god, Putin aka god, Big money aka god, NRA aka god, GOP aka god are protecting him? I think so.
As long Trump a dump keeps giving these people things they have wanted for so long they will protect their front man no matter how much evil he does.
Let's watch. Because as American citizens that's all we can do till voting day. Unless the Russians has that covered too.
