Amid endless calls for “thoughts and prayers” instead of legislative action in response to mass shootings, a woman in Michigan decided to take matters into her own hands.
After Wednesday's mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, Fern Malila mailed a letter and a check in the amount of "thoughts and prayers" to Representative Jack Bergman, a Michigan Republican
“Dear Rep. Bergman,” she wrote, “since you and your colleagues in Congress seem to feel that this is the solution to mass murder, please accept this contribution.”
"I did it because I'm hearing the same arguments after each and every time this happens," Malila explained to Newsweek on Friday. "Each and every news media person says contact your congressman, and Congress doesn't do anything."
A post about this went viral on Reddit, receiving over 300 comments, and it looks as if it has started a mini movement:
"My check is going in the mail today to Senator Marco Rubio — another NRA puppet!" one Florida resident wrote. "Thanks for the inspiration!"
I think it's a great idea.
And a way of demonstrating the hypocrisy shown by these lawmakers.
If they received a deluge of mail containing checks that simply said "Thoughts and Prayers" I think at the very least it would get their attention.
Don't bank on it....:D
ReplyDeleteIt also made our local news in metro Detroit, so the word is spreading!

Parkland Students Hammer Trump For Making Mass Shooting About The FBI And Russia
ReplyDelete...Trump has mobilized America’s students against him
By trying to use their tragedy for his own political purposes, Trump has mobilized students, not just in Parkland, but around the country against him.
...They are protesting and demanding action. It is important to remember that many of these high school juniors and seniors grew up with Obama as president. A competent and caring presidency is all that they have ever known. The students aren’t going to sit back and take what Trump is doing.
They are demanding action and change, and if Trump and won’t listen, they are going to fight to make it happen.

Desperate Trump Claims That GOP Investigations Of Him Are A Russian Conspiracy
...The Russians are laughing their asses off over how easily they found a stooge like Trump, molded him into what they wanted, and got him elected. The Russians are laughing, not because of the investigations, but because they boy Trump is so easily manipulated and used.
Trump is desperate, and the strategy of wrapping himself around the flag that he sabotaged is not going to slow the march to impeachment that appears to be inevitable.

"On March 24th, you are going to be seeing students in every single major city marching and we have our lives on the line," he continued. "And at the end of the day, that is going to be what's bringing us to victory and to making some sort of right out of this tragedy."

I think, there is also a call on teachers now to walk out on April 20 (anniversary of Columbine massacre). When students AND teachers walk out, THAT will (hopefully) get the attention needed.
DeleteOh, and a few ReThugs are starting to get off the NRA bandwagon - they are seeing the writing on the wall and are hoping to be able to survive the voting-massacre in November. HA! Too little too late!
They should include anniversary of Sandy Hook.
DeleteRub the NRA puppets' faces in it every single anniversary.
Does anyone know if there is a significance to the March 24 date for the protest?
DeleteMarch 24, 1998. "Mitchell Johnson ( 13 yrs old ) and Andrew Golden ( 11 Years Old ) shoot and kill four fellow students and a teacher and nine other students and a teacher were wounded in Jonesboro, Arkansas. These boys were in a middle school and had set off the fire alarm and set up in the woods overlooking the school with two semi-automatic rifles, one bolt-action rifle and four handguns. As the students and teachers came out the two boys fired on them with devastating results. In August 1998, they were both sentenced to prison until they reached the age of 21. Mitchell Johnson was released on August 11th, 2005, Andrew Golden was released on May 25, 2007. Since those killings laws regarding murder by young offenders have changed in Arkansas and many other states and young offenders who commit horrendous crimes like these are often charged as adults and imprisoned for life."

ReplyDeleteI think I'd write "Kiss my American Ass you Fucking Republican Trumpster!" instead.

School walkouts for gun control are already being planned by Women’s March organizers
ReplyDeleteSupport continued to grow over the weekend for a planned March 14 National School Walkout protest in the aftermath of the Valentine’s Day school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. Meanwhile, students at the South Florida school planned a separate walkout on March 24, ABC News reported.

Parkland’s Emma Gonzales schools Trump for lack of Twitter maturity: ‘The best thing for us to do is ignore him’
...“I think the best way to deal with this is to ignore him,” Gonzales asserted. “I think we can all agree that the things that President Trump tweets is nothing that will have a lasting impact — unless it’s a negative lasting impact — on the people around us.”
“At this point especially, the things that he mentions when he brings up talk of the FBI, he’s trying to blame somebody,” she added. “And we can’t let him do that. So, the best thing for us to do is to ignore him and to continue fighting our fight, the fight that he refuses to acknowledge. The fact that he refused to even tweet the word ‘gun’ in any of his tweets. And yet, he insists on tweeting, and he insists on blaming the Democrats for something that he did wrong — looking back into the past instead of looking forward into the future.”
“It’s disgraceful,” Gonzales concluded.

Something powerful is happening in Florida.
ReplyDeleteFor the third straight day following a school shooting that left 17 dead and more than a dozen injured, community members gathered to demand gun control. And for those politicians who are in the pocket of the National Rifle Association, the people had another message: Be scared.

At the very least, although a gimmick, maybe it will get them to STOP the standard response when we know they don't mean it deep down. Else, they would do something and we have been waiting YEARS.
ReplyDeleteIf you notice, for all his so called millions of 'followers' his tweets get very few likes or retweets...often well under 100,000. And the comments are scathing a good part of the time. Check for yourself.

This European comedy sketch explains how the world sees America’s gun problem
ReplyDeleteFrom the outside, it’s just baffling.
...“Dear fellow Europeans,” the video’s narrator begins, “a devastating humanitarian crisis is threatening a small country on the coast of North America: the United States of America.”
The video goes on to list some of the statistics related to America’s gun homicides and accidents from Gun Violence Archive: 24,000 injuries and 11,000 deaths so far this year, culminating to roughly 40 deaths a day. The video pins this on “a terrible epidemic.”
“NRA is a constitutional disorder caused by a dysfunction of the prefrontal Second Amendment in the nonsensical cortex, causing patients to shoot people,” the narrator explains. “It starts with an innocent Colt, but soon patients will show signs of shotguns, sniper rifles, and M16s even. Often, patients use silencers to hide their condition.”
The video goes on like this, showing pictures that you’d expect to see in a typical humanitarian crisis PSA about a major disease halfway across the world — black and white images, sad people, children suffering, and so on.

Wonderful! Shows how much “thoughts and prayers” are worth. Pray and think all you want, but without backing it up with meaningful action to help a situation, it’s nothing more than mental masterbation.
ReplyDeleteNow, I’m not against masterbation, of either the mental or physical kind. Healthy people engage in a bit of that fairly often, I believe. What healthy people DO NOT do is pretend that when they jack off, they’re helping someone.
I'm asking all my black friends to go to the local gun store this week and buy an AR-15, 500 rounds of ammo, and a handful of 20-round magazines.
ReplyDeleteIf they do, I guarantee within a week Congress will ban the AR-15.
Students are NOT going away.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/florida-gun-control-march_us_5a8988b3e4b00bc49f451f44
"A group of students who survived the Wednesday mass shooting at a Florida high school is organizing a nationwide march to demand lawmakers make ending gun violence a priority.
The “March For Our Lives” is planned for March 24 in Washington, D.C., with sister marches expected to break out in other major cities across the country, five students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School announced on Sunday during several TV appearances.
“People are saying that it’s not time to talk about gun control, and we can respect that,” Cameron Kasky, a junior at the high school, said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Here’s the time: March 24,” Kasky continued. “In every single city, we are going to be marching together as students begging for our lives. This isn’t about the GOP. This isn’t about the Democrats. This is about the adults. We feel neglected. At this point, you’re either with us or you’re against us.”"
Some of these students will be voting in November of 2018.
More will be voting in November of 2020.
By 2022 they'll not only be voting, they'll be running as candidates.
Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, et al, should be afraid, very afraid.
They have pissed off a lot of people for a lot of different reasons, but the extent to which they are owned by the NRA is ultimately going to bite them in the ass. No amount of lip service or fake fixes is going to shut people up. They have had enough already.
This is a bipartisan issue. And the membership of the NRA isn't enough to turn the tide. The NRA doesn't have enough money to buy off the public this time.
“People are saying that it’s not time to talk about gun control, and we can respect that,
Delete=============
the only people saying that are the cowards in the WH and republicans in Congress.
