More than 60 researchers and technologists are running for federal office in 2018 as part of a historic wave of candidates with science backgrounds launching campaigns.
At least 200 candidates with previous careers in science, technology, engineering and math announced bids for some of the nation’s roughly 7,000 state legislature seats as of Jan. 31, according to data that 314 Action, a political action committee, shared exclusively with HuffPost.
The group, which launched in 2014 to help scientists run for office, said it is talking with 500 more people and is pressing about half of them to run. An additional 200 such candidates are running for school boards.
“The sheer number is really astonishing,” 314 Action founder Shaughnessy Naughton told HuffPost. “We’ve never seen anything like this.”
There is currently only one scientist in Congress, imagine what having even a dozen more could do to change how Congress deals with anti-abortion legislation, bills on climate change, and even military spending.
Intelligent discourse on those subjects could not only change how money is being spent, but also how the public comes to view them in their every day lives.
More smart people running the government.
That simply cannot be a bad thing.
Former sports doctor sentenced to 40 to 125 years in prison
ReplyDeleteCHARLOTTE, Mich. (AP) The former sports doctor whose serial sexual abuse of girls and young women has shaken the gymnastics world was sentenced Monday to a third prison term of 40 to 125 years behind bars for molesting young athletes at an elite Michigan training center.
Love the idea of a lot of educated folks in Congress. Going to be fun watching Trump try to get along with and understand them!
ReplyDeleteWhy are people in the liberal camp still purporting this idea that the Russians hacked the US election? Trump was elected because people in the US have been driven so far into the ground that they were willing to give the bigoted tv personality a go over another corrupt neoliberal imperialist like Clinton. Its amazing how when something extraordinary happens, like Trump being elected, you will still have swathes of people who still can't see the massive elephant in the room. Look at the popularity of Corbyn in the UK now and you will maybe start to understand what the people actually want.
ReplyDeleteRemember, it's not about actually doing something to the US for the Russians. It's using cold war style propaganda and tactics to make people divide. We must not let this happen. his goal is to weaken Europe and the US because that is the only way Russia will have any chance at superpowerdom.
'RULE OF LAW'
Delete"Another corrupt neoliberal imperialist"? Right, comrade.
DeleteRussia doesn't want "superpowerdom". Research H. Rowan Gaither, the one time head of the Ford Foundation.
DeleteI won't hold my breath about scientists having a big impact. Remember, there are scientists, and then there are 'scientists'. There are good as well as bad apples amongst all kinds of people. What is his name, the 'token black' who supposedly was brain surgeon? To be a brain surgeon, you do have to become somewhat knowledgeable in how a brain works, yet, here we have him that claims the pyramids were grain silos...
ReplyDelete-the 'token black'-
Deleteracist much?
8:51: learn to read and reason. How many other blacks did Dotard select for any higher-up office? Remember him calling that guy 'his' black friend?! *I* am not the racist here!
DeleteIts typical racists like you 10:51, you are so righteous in your racism you don't even know it.
Delete'token'

'oreo'
Heard all these liberal racist comments like yours over the years disparaging people of color that choose different politics than the one apparently you have chosen for them.
Guess what? You DON'T own people of color. They ARE allowed to make their own political choices. And they should be provided the same dignity as anyone else who participates in the political process.
You are correct about Carson, 7:38 AM!
ReplyDeleteBut, hopefully there will be a bunch of new folks in Congress that are stable, well educated, eager to do hard work and serve their constituents. We are sorely lacking them in our current House and Senate! And, most assuredly w/the dictator!

America needs a new political system. Don't know what it is but it's not Donald Trump as the last king nor is it those doofuses who are running congress.
ReplyDeleteWe need a council. The council of American leadership. You know, something that represents all walks of life at a round table.
Right now we are so stymied in our political system, and with the internet giving voice to more people, it just sounds like we all are at a major gridlock.
For eight years we were given hope by Barack Obama that change was possible but the Trumpsters locked that dream down good. We have gone back to the ugly American status with no hope of going forward. Donald took us back there lickity split.
Yes, we need more thinking people in Washington. But the political bullshit is so thick there who can wade through it all?
I most certainly disagree with you! We do NOT need a new system! We need some fine tuning, which is why we can write amendments, but we don't need a new system.
DeleteWe need protections against someone crazy like Humpty Trumpty getting in. And we could use campaign finance reform. And we need term limits. There may be others that should be looked at (such as clearly stating that corporations are NOT people), but that is a far cry from a new system!
You apparently aren't aware of the rules of gold.
DeleteThose that have the gold, make the rules.

Our Mission
DeleteI would have thought that with the number of medical physicians in Congress (I think 17 is the current number.) there would be more intelligent discussion concerning abortion and the need for it in many cases.
ReplyDeleteInstead, some of those are truly stupid and make statements that are patently ignorant. Those - usually - appear to be in the evangelical/fundamentalist camp.
Yes, more scientists might be a good thing, but it depends entirely on how they will work toward making the congresses of the states and Uncle Sam more logical - IF that is even possible any more.
A more successful method - and I know how slim the chances are of it happening - would be term limits so we can sooner get rid of the idiots who do show up.
While there were problems in Congress before the late fifties, they were far fewer than we have now with the onslaught of the professional politician. It used to be a person would run for office, serve a couple of terms (or a few) then return to their hometown jobs.
It was also cheaper on the citizens of the country, too, because we didn't have that many sucking at the teat of the Federal government garnering huge retirement packages and all the benefits they now have.
Our political system should NOT be a career. We need people who can use decent common sense and not party lines.
THIS!!! ^
DeleteWe definitely need term limits. ACROSS THE BOARD! All government officials should be term limited. Ten to twelve years MAX. And no getting back in after one 'sitting out a round'.

Maassen said authorities believe parts for North Korea's weapons program were "acquired through shadow buyers or shadow markets abroad, which they then bought in Germany."'"

"More smart people running the government" sounds appealing.
ReplyDeleteBut there are some flaws in your thinking, Gryphen. There's no logical reason to assume that being a scientist, technologist, engineer, or mathematician indicates a higher degree of intelligence than, say, a law degree, which more than a third of Congress currently holds.
And of course no advanced degree in any discipline is a guarantee of integrity, interpersonal intelligence, organizational management skill, or even ordinary human decency.
