This is what it is like to experience a school shooting first hand.

I cannot even begin to tell you how hard these words hit me.

Though if you are a human being perhaps I do not have to.

We need men and women in Congress and the Senate who feel that same emotional impact after reading something like this.

Not politicians jumping through the NRA hoops, but REAL empathetic human beings who cannot sleep until they fix this terrible wrong in our country.

2018 is our year to make this country, and our world, a safer, better, and more inspiring place to live.

As a teacher, these school shootings remind me that I am expected to lay down my life for my students. I won't shrug from this responsibility, but this is what is expected of me. Am I willing to do it? Of course. Is this part of my job description/salary/life insurance coverage for my family? No. And to think teachers are vilified for being lazy and useless and uncaring.

I've never heard that teachers are lazy, useless, or uncaring.

You are paid a fraction of what you deserve, and now this expectation on top of it....

      You all are heroes.

U know what kind of respect 45 has for teachers and education by who now runs the Department of Education. I remember Chris Christie yelling at a teacher who dared question him. I have heard people complain that teachers get paid for a year but only work nine months and have summers off. U mean the summers they use to go to school to make sure they stay credentialed? Or work other jobs? When did our teachers job description include bodyguard and human shield? Soldiers get combat pay. Their families get death benefits. As a retired Army officer, I knew the risk. But I never expected those in my family who are teachers would ever have to fear gun violence where they work.

Not a single education class in college ever trained me to defend my students against a madman trying to slaughter us with an AR-15, using just a dry-erase marker and a 3-ring binder. I wonder if future teachers will be expected to add combat training to their college curriculum.

You forgot to add 'overpaid for working part-time' to the popular derogatory terms used to describe educators.

And, 5:20, if you haven't heard those words being used to describe teachers, you haven't been listening to Republicans for the last 20 years.

That is a lie they are paid for a year and work 9 months, they are paid for 9 months and either have to get a second job or spread the 9 month salary over a year.

    How about...
after each and every school shooting we show each politician and how much money they've gotten from the NRA?

Sadly, Randall, I don't think it will make any difference. The United States of America is a country with citizenry in love with their weapons of destruction and as long as you have a government unwilling to control the use of firearms you can be sure that mass murders of innocent children will continue unabated.

    3. They're trolling Marco Rubio in Florida with "Three Billboards in Florida."

“Slaughtered in school ... and still no gun control? How come, Marco Rubio?”

Billboards on three trucks circulating around where his offices are and the general area. Brilliant.

    That made me cry.

And I wouldn't ever want to get to the point where I don't cry.

I lived near Columbine when that happened, and I remember the shock and horror at work; we couldn't believe it was going on. And now, all these years later, it feels like it's going to be a 3 day news cycle item, then off the radar.

I see that the fucking GOP is now blaming the FBI, using this to fit in with their "fake news," "it's a hoax," "can't trust the FBI" meme so that the rubes won't see the truth about Donnie Dotard Two Scoops, and will continue to turn a blind eye to the truth.

    Makes me sick.

My sister was living in Littleton and teaching in Englewood when the Columbine shooting happened. Her school was locked down for hours and she had a hard time getting home from work because of all the roads blocked off by police.

It's hard to believe that, 19 years later, NOTHING has been done to stop this outrageous slaughter that continues to plague our schools. Not only has no new legislation been passed to prevent these shootings, but Congress even allowed the assault weapons ban to expire 5 years after Columbine.

Obviously, campaign support from the NRA is more valuable to Republicans (and a few despicable Democrats) than children's lives. And they have the unmitigated gall to consider themselves to be the 'pro-life' party.

I saw a Twitter post last night that was a photo of Trump at the hospital last night with Melania and several other doctors and nurses. Melania was in her 6 inch stilettos but the wprst part of the photo was Trump in the middle, grinning like an idiot and goving the thumbs up sign like he was at a campaign rally. It disgusted me. I think the Twitter account was Brandon Friedman (or maybe Friedrich).

He congratulated the doctors for their work. Congratulated them? I might understand thanking them but using the word congratulations in this case is clueless. Reminds me of when he presented a Purple Heart to a wounded soldier at Walter Reed and told him "Congratulations! Great job!" For getting shot? He does not know empathy or sympathy. His speech on Thursday had all the comfort and feeling u could get from a rock. I remember the emotion I saw on President Obama's face afterSandy Hook. The comfort he gave in Charleston, when he broke out in Amazing Grace. U could tell these tragedies personally affected him. Unlike 45

I'm seeing numerous stories in the media about student survivors of the Parkland shooting going very public with their outrage over this latest massacre.

Despite the unconscionable number of children who have been slaughtered in school shootings since Columbine, nothing that Democratic lawmakers or gun control action groups have done seems to have any real impact.

Perhaps a student-led movement will be what finally turns the tide and helps put some sensible legislation in place. After all, THEY'RE the ones being killed because of NRA-funded politicians protecting the gun manufacturers profits.

There are several calls for student walk-outs in the next month or so. I believe, one will be March 8. Another one calls for all Highschool students to walk out on April 20, the Columbine massacre anniversary, and to STAY AWAY from schools until Congress finally gets the balls and does something effective about gun control.

    I LOVE this!

People are sending checks to NRA-supported legislators with "thoughts and prayers" written on the line for the donation amount.

" “Since you and your colleagues in Congress seem to feel this is the solution to mass murder, please accept this contribution,” one woman wrote as she donated a big fat check worth “thoughts and prayers” to Rep Jack Bergman’s campaign."

Good for that woman! Bergman deserves it. He is a real coward considering he's spent his entire adult life as a Marine. Refuses to meet with constituents and, when forced to, does not answer their questions. Because he spent his adult life being paid by us, the American people, he's even worse than his orthopedic surgeon predecessor who managed to vote at every opportunity against providing decent health care to his constituents.

"The Republican National Committee sent a message to the state of Florida after a mass shooting at a high school on Wednesday left 17 people dead: But Twitter wasn’t having it:"

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ar-15-purchase-age_us_5a8606fee4b00bc49f424c9e

"Under federal law, and in almost every state, the minimum age for purchasing a long gun from a licensed dealer is 18. This category of firearms encompasses shotguns and rifles, including the assault-style weapons that have become popular in mass shootings. Federal law provides no minimum age for the possession of long guns, and in some states, it’s legal for children younger than 18 to own these weapons as long as they have parental consent.

For handguns, the age limit increases to 21 under federal law. Just two states, Hawaii and Illinois, have laws specifically raising the minimum purchase age for long guns to 21, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

This system gives millions of young Americans the right to buy the deadliest civilian weaponry three years before they can legally drink alcohol. It dates back to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Although civilian firepower has changed dramatically over the past half-century, these distinctions have not."
