Pope Francis said Saturday he worries that rising tensions between the United States and North Korea could lead to a wide military conflict that would wipe out a "large part of humanity."
He called for renewed diplomacy using third-party intermediaries and for the United Nations to take a lead role in de-escalating tensions.
The Pope, while returning to Italy from Egypt, took several questions from reporters and one asked him what he would say to world leaders at this critical moment.
Francis said in Italian that the situation "has heated up too much. I always appeal for a solution through diplomatic means."
The pontiff, who has spoken of a "piecemeal third world war" for several years, said increased conflict would be devastating.
"It's piecemeal but the pieces are getting larger, and are concentrated in places which were already hot," Pope Francis said. "Today a wider war would destroy, I won't say half of humanity, but a large part of humanity and culture. It would be terrible. I don't think humanity today could bear it."
You know when a guy who firmly believes in an afterlife, and that he absolutely has a reserved parking place in that afterlife, expresses great concern about the possibility of a war, I think he deserves our attention.
And the Pontiff is right, Trump's ignorance and lack of preparedness for the job of president puts the entire world at risk.
If I were working for the FBI, I would be working around the clock to prove Trump's ties to Russia and get him removed from office before it is simply too late.
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Carrie Fisher, "Princess Leia" of Star Wars fame, is hospitalized after massive heart attack during flight.
Courtesy of The Guardian:
Carrie Fisher, the actor beloved for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, is being treated in intensive care after suffering a serious heart attack on a flight to Los Angeles from London, her brother has said.
Todd Fisher said the 60-year-old Star Wars legend was receiving treatment in an intensive care unit of a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a medical emergency on the United Airlines flight from London on Friday.
He added his older sister was receiving excellent care, but said he could not classify her condition. He had earlier told reporters that she had been stabilised and was out of the emergency room.
But he later clarified his comments: “It’s not fair to say ‘stable’. I am not saying she is fine, or not fine,” he told Reuters by telephone. “She is in the ICU.” But in a subsequent interview he said many details about her condition or what caused the medical emergency are unknown.
There have been conflicting reports on Fisher's condition ever since she was taken off that plane on a gurney, and that has thrown the internet into a tizzy over fear that 2016 will claim another victim.
So having this happen now seems especially upsetting.
And to have 2016, that giant steaming turd of a year, claim yet another of our precious celebrity icons (Don't forget besides Prince we also lost Alan Rickman and David Bowie.) seems almost too much to bear.
As you know I have no confidence in the power of prayer, however there is one power in which I believe wholeheartedly.
May the force be with you Princess Leia.

We have recently seen Fisher return in not just one Star Wars movie, but two (Spoiler alert.), and it has appeared that she was enjoying a rather dramatic comeback after years of struggling with drug addiction and depression.DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE TOUCH CARRIE FISHER, 2016.— Alanna Bennett (@AlannaBennett) December 23, 2016

I know this is just a comic, but seriously this is a good idea.
The rational side of me thinks "No way would Donald Trump actually start a nuclear war."
But then the irrational side of me remembers that it was the side that was right in thinking he would be elected, and that makes the rational side of me wet its pants just a little.

The mysterious saga of the no longer useful political prop.
![]() |
| Has anybody seen my Mommy? |
After he was elected I don't believe Bill Clinton's felt the need to bring out his saxophone very often anymore, and I haven't heard that Scott Brown still bothers to drive his GMC pickup to his job in the Senate or not. But what happens when a useful political prop is also a human being?
Since the campaign, and Palin's last book tour, little Trig Paxson Van Palin has only rarely been seen accompanying his mom as she endlessly attempts to drag out her fifteen minutes of fame.
In fact the last time I can remember them being photographed together was during Palin's visit to the Ronald Reagan ranch back in January of this year.
He did not show up on Palin's Constitutionally wrapped bus tour/donation drive, nor was he present during the premiere of her propaganda move debut, and of course we can all rest assured he certainly did NOT accompany the Grizzled Mam to Korea ("Does he still need a passport if we check him in as baggage?")
Now that is not to say that we have not seen the little fellow occasionally (The last time was this photo that was posted by the person who runs Bristol's Facebook page), but with Sarah? Not so much.
| Courtesy of Bristol's official Facebook page. NOT the secret one. |
I have been asking this question for a while now and, except for a couple of anonymous tips, have not been conclusively able to determine that Trig is being well cared for at this time. And what I mean by that is while I assume he is being fed and that his basic needs are met, I don't know that the needs determined by his hearing loss, eyesight problems, and Down syndrome are being adequately addressed.
And before anybody argues that it is none of our business, let me remind you that Sarah Palin made it our business by using Trig to gain our sympathy and to help create the illusion that she is the perfect pro-life mother. I would like to know if that was all just smoke and mirrors, or if she is actually doing the hard work that it takes to raise a special needs little boy?
In other words, she made us care about this child, so she cannot complain if we still want to know that he is doing well. Don't you agree?
And no we cannot just assume that he is well cared for, since we have heard from numerous sources that Palin is an absentee mother at best, and a manipulate vindictive harpy at worst.
Make no mistake, I totally believe that Trig's presence in the Palin home was driven by her political aspirations. So now that she no longer appears to have political aspirations, what becomes of Trig?
