The 3-year-old daughter of a Georgia sheriff's deputy accidentally shot herself in the leg in Dodge County, according to the local news channel WMGT.
The little girl, who was not identified because of her age, is the daughter of Deputy Dorian Johnson and Lakeasha Smith. Dodge County Sheriff Lynn Sheffield told local media that while moving some furniture around in the family's home, Smith had removed the gun from a chest of drawers and put it on the bed. At the time, Smith believed the girl was in a different room, but it appears that the child crawled onto the bed, picked up the gun and shot herself in the right leg.
The weapon was a personal firearm of Johnson's, not a police-issued gun. He was not at home during the incident.
I actually feel badly for this father since it seems he took steps to keep his firearm out of the reach of his daughter. However a gun in the house, by definition increases the likelihood that somebody will be shot, whether on purpose of accidentally.
The minute this firearm entered the house the possibility of his child being shot went up 100%.
Simply put guns are designed to kill. Even guns owned by law enforcement professionals.
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Kentucky Deputy's gun exercises its 2nd Amendment rights all by itself, when it shoots his mother after falling out of his jacket.
Courtesy of Raw Story:
A western Kentucky sheriff’s deputy was placed on paid leave after accidentally shooting his mother during a wedding ceremony.
Detective Cory Golightly, a McCracken County sheriff’s deputy, brought a personal weapon over the weekend to the wedding at Bardwell Baptist Church in nearby Carlisle County, reported WPSD-TV.
The weapon fell to the ground and fired – striking Golightly’s mother — as the deputy adjusted his jacket, investigators said.
His mother, by the way, is listed is stable condition and should recover fine.
I'm sure that everybody is going to jump all over this poor deputy for shooting his own mother in a church, but maybe she was asking for it. We don't know the story.
Kind of tricky of him to say the gun did it by itself though.
But we're not fooled, because as the NRA keeps telling us, "Guns don't shoot and almost kill people in a church, people shoot and almost kill people in a church."
Nice try Deputy.

"Fuck your breath!" Tulsa Country Sheriff's deputy who shot unarmed suspect instead of using his Taser bought his way onto the force.
Courtesy of New York Magazine:
Over a week ago, an unarmed black man named Eric Courtney Harris was killed by 73-year-old Tulsa, Oklahoma, "reserve deputy" police officer Bob Bates. This happened shortly after Harris sold ammunition and a gun to some undercover cops, who moved to arrest him. Harris fled and — according to the explanation given by officials — Bates accidentally shot the 44-year-old while trying to Tase him: "During the rapidly evolving altercation, the reserve deputy had what he believed was his Taser from his tactical carrier ... Initial reports have determined that the reserve deputy was attempting to use less lethal force, believing he was utilizing a Taser, when he inadvertently discharged his service weapon, firing one round which struck Harris," said a report. Body-camera footage of the shooting, which was released on Friday, adds yet another horrifying dimension to the incident.
In the (extremely upsetting) video, Harris can be seen running down a sidewalk. Officers order him to get down, someone yells "Taser!" and a gunshot is heard. Bates yells, "I shot him! I'm sorry." Meanwhile, Harris is crying, "He shot me! He shot me, man. Oh my God. I'm losing my breath."
"Fuck your breath!" a cop responds. "Shut the fuck up!" "You shouldn’t have fucking ran!" his colleague adds as they hold Harris down. Harris died about an hour later at a nearby hospital.
Now you may be asking yourself just how in the hell does a trained deputy mistake a handgun for a Taser? Well this might help to explain that:
The reserve Tulsa County Sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot and killed a man last week when he thought he had pulled his Taser, is part of a group of wealthy donors who make large contributions to the department for the privilege of playing police officer.
According to Tulsa World, Robert Bates, 73, who made the fatal mistake that cost a man his life, is a local insurance company executive who has donated multiple vehicles, weapons, and stun guns to the Sheriff’s Office since becoming a reserve deputy in 2008.
A seventy three year old man, who bought his way into the Sheriff's Department so he could play cop. Gee why would anybody think something might go wrong?
Of course that in no way explains, or justifies, the deputy with his knee on this dying man's neck telling him "Fuck your breath!"
For his part Bob Bates is facing charges of second degree manslaughter.
As for the other officers on the scene who responded so callously to the pleading of a dying man, there are apparently no charges forthcoming.

Three year old child accidentally kills deputy's wife with deputy's gun.
Courtesy of Raw Story:
A cookout in Tennessee ended in tragedy over the weekend when a 3-year-old child accidentally shot and killed the wife of a Wilson County sheriff’s deputy.
According to WSMV, the toddler found the pistol and discharged it during a gathering at Deputy Daniel Fanning’s residence on Saturday.
Deputies said that 48-year-old Josephine G. Fanning was dead by the time they arrived on the scene. The 3-year-old child was reportedly related to the Fannings.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) determined that the pistol belonged to Deputy Fanning. The Tennessean reported that the deputy had been in a bedroom of the home with another relative looking at guns.
The child later gained access to the firearm on top of the bed when entering the bedroom with Josephine Fanning.
Yep showing off his guns to impress his family, and now his wife pays the ultimate sacrifice for his need to compensate for his inadequacies as a man.
And this is somebody who should have been well trained, somebody who should KNOW better. If HE did not receive the training necessary to prevent this tragedy what makes us think the average gun owner is any more competent?
Remember guns don't kill people, babies with guns kill people.
