Irish priest claims there is a desperate need for more exorcists due to increase in "demonic activity." Hang on, I have to check what year it is again.

An Irish priest has put out an urgent call for backup to help with the growing demand for exorcisms in the country, according to reports. 

“It’s only in recent years that the demand [for exorcisms] has risen exponentially,” Father Pat Collins said, adding that anyone who doesn’t see the need for more exorcists is “out of touch with reality.” Collins wrote an open letter to Irish bishops asking them to begin training more priests to deal with exorcisms, and he cited the International Association of Exorcists’ belief that demonic activity has increased substantially in recent years.

Collins has been speaking out about the activities of what he has called “the evil one” for years. He is widely considered Ireland’s most prominent exorcist, and he has also advocated for the church to take a more active role in demon hunting.

 "Anyone who doesn’t see the need for more exorcists is out of touch with reality.”

Just let that bounce around in your skull a little.

These are the people we are forced to share the planet with. These are the people whose beliefs we are encouraged to respect.

President-elect Donald J. Trump claimed credit on Thursday night for persuading Ford to keep an automaking plant in Kentucky rather than moving it to Mexico. The only wrinkle: Ford was not actually planning to move the plant. 

Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter shortly after 9 p.m. that Ford’s chairman, William Clay Ford Jr., had just told him that Ford “will be keeping the Lincoln plant in Kentucky — no Mexico.” 

Minutes later, Mr. Trump wrote in a second post: “I worked hard with Bill Ford to keep the Lincoln plant in Kentucky. I owed it to the great State of Kentucky for their confidence in me!” Mr. Trump won 62.5 percent of the state’s popular vote in the presidential election.

But Ford had not planned to close the Louisville factory. Instead, it had planned to expand production of another vehicle made in Louisville, the Ford Escape. And the change had not been expected to result in any job losses. 

“Whatever happens in Louisville, it will not lose employment,” Jimmy Settles, a union official, told The Detroit Free Press. “They cannot make enough Escapes.”

So apparently Trump's version of "I worked hard" means that he worked hard to make up to make himself look good.

This is our new norm by the way.

Donald Trump will tells some ridiculous lie, the press will report on it, and it will make mo difference whatsoever because the only people who will read it are people who still respect journalism, and that does NOT include Trump supporters.

New study by nonpartisan group finds that Bernie Sanders' economic plan would double the national debt, increase federal spending by 33 trillion dollars in 10 years.

Sen. Bernie Sanders' tax and spending proposals would provide new levels of health and education benefits for American families, but they'd also blow an $18-trillion hole in federal deficits, piling on so much debt they would damage the economy. 

That sobering assessment comes from a joint analysis released Monday by the nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center and the Urban Institute Health Policy Center, well-known Washington think tanks. 

Democratic presidential candidate Sanders would raise taxes by more than $15 trillion over 10 years, with most of that paid by upper-income earners. 

But that wouldn't be enough to cover the cost of his proposed government-run health care system, along with free undergraduate college, enhanced Social Security, family and medical leave, among other new programs. The cost of the health care plan alone is more than $30 trillion, according to the study. 

The bottom line: Sanders would add $18 trillion to federal debt over a decade. That's about double the current total government debt of $19 trillion.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has proposed a whopping $33 trillion federal spending increase over 10 years, according to a new report likely to fuel complaints his campaign promises are unrealistic. 

His proposed tax increases would not come anywhere close to covering those costs, the centrist Tax Policy Center said Monday, and his plan would drive federal debt to “unprecedented” levels.

The studies, published jointly by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center and the Urban Institute in Washington, concludes that Sanders's plans are short a total of more than $18 trillion over a decade. His programs would cost the federal government about $33 trillion over that period, almost all of which would go toward Sanders's proposed system of national health insurance. Yet the Democratic presidential candidate has put forward just $15 trillion in new taxes, the authors concluded. 

In principle, national health insurance could make many families better off overall, without imposing unsustainable burdens on the federal budget. For the system to work in terms of dollars and cents, though, the benefits would have to be less generous than they are in the system Sanders has proposed, or the taxes would have to be more onerous for the middle class, as they are in many European countries.

And the Chicago Tribune simply accuses Sanders of selling a "fantasy agenda."

This is certainly not the first report we have seen that Sanders' plans are simply not workable, but it seems to be the most comprehensive.

Of course ultimately it really doesn't matter what the cost might be because even IF Sanders was to win the nomination, and then the general election, there is absolutely no way any of this would ever make it past Congress.

And in fact it would be this very move towards a more socialist system that would help Republicans hold onto power and most likely increase their hold over the House and the Senate.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have finally come to terms on where and when they will have one more debate before New York's Democratic primary. 

It's going down in Brooklyn. 

The DNC-sanctioned debate will be aired on CNN and NY1, a regional cable news outlet, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on April 14 — five days before the New York primary.

There we go. After several weeks of grousing by the Sanders camp we finally have a date, so everybody should be happy.

Afterward, Sanders' campaign spokesman, Michael Briggs, released an aggressively worded statement criticizing Clinton for making the Sanders campaign change a date for a rally that it was planning to hold on the same day. 

Briggs wrote: 

"Fortunately, we were able to move a major New York City rally scheduled for April 14 to the night before. We hope the debate will be worth the inconvenience for thousands of New Yorkers who were planning to attend our rally on Thursday but will have to change their schedules to accommodate Secretary Clinton's jam-packed, high-dollar, coast-to-coast schedule of fundraisers all over the country."

I'm sorry but since the large majority of Sanders supporters are young people still in college, exactly what plans do they have to change?

Speaking of Sanders' supporters get a load of what Barney Frank had to say about them recently: 

Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders are unrealistic about what the independent Vermont senator can achieve if elected president, former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) argued Monday. 

“I think it is a lack of information, to be honest,” he said on “MSNBC Live with Jose Diaz-Balart” when asked why Sanders is resonating with voters. 

“You have people, I believe, who do not understand how hard it is to make change. [It is] the importance of not just being idealistic, but being sensibly pragmatic and keeping their ideals. Sanders is getting their support.” 

Frank said some of the voters who are frustrated with the Democratic establishment have unrealistic expectations about what a president can deliver. 

“You have people who don’t understand, frankly, the nature of the American political system,” he said. "It’s the separation of powers.

This is the exact same argument I have with my daughter, who seems to think that Bernie Sanders is a Jewish version of Gandalf the Gray, with the power to wave his staff and simply change everything that he wants to change with some unspecified kind of magic.  (My daughter hates when I make this comparison by the way.)

She talks about free college, reforming Wall Street, and universal health care as policies that Bernie can put into place through sheer force of will, and with the support of everyday people with no ability to influence votes in the House or the Senate.

The reality is that winning this next election might be possible for either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, but Hillary wants to continue pushing forward policies put into place by President Obama, which is possible and perfectly reasonable, while Sanders wants to upend the table and start from scratch, and that is simply a non-starter.

Not only will Sanders face unrelenting opposition from the Right, but even Democrats in Congress will be wary of associating with him for fear of making themselves vulnerable in their bids for reelection.

Let's face it a Democrat in a purple state cannot afford to have a challenger with the ability to create ads showing them "palling around with a Socialist."

That label might not bother young folks today, and that is great news for our future, but it is the kiss of death in most Southern states and rural communities in this country.

Update: Okay I finally got around to reading this New York Daily News interview with Bernie Sanders.  I would suggest that any Sanders supporters do the same.

Pay close attention to his responses concerning Wall Street and "too big to fail" banks.

He literally has no idea what he is talking about.

Now that was quite funny, and obviously quite crude, but it was also very on point.

It is a known fact that human sapiens are good at recognizing patterns, and identifying cause and effect, and that it played no small part in our intellectual development.

But what is also true is that we sometimes see patterns where they do not exist, and see a cause and effect that really only exists in our imaginations.

That is essentially the space that for many people is occupied by God, but for those who are less religious may play host to their idea of fate, or the karma, or, as in this skit, the universe.

And trust me people can be just as obnoxiously convinced that the universe is talking to them directly, as religious people are that God sent them a sign by having a bird poop an image of the Virgin Mary on their car window.

The simple truth is that what we often perceive in the world around us is completely subjective.

The trick is to remove the rose colored glasses and see the reality as it is, no matter how much that reality may terrify us at first.

Sure to believe that a god, or the universe itself, is watching out for us, or has our back, might be comforting. But it is also just this side of psychotic. 

Stephen Hawking on the afterlife.

"I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he said. 

"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark," he added.

I sometimes find myself struck silent by the musings of seemingly intelligent people about the possibilities of an afterlife.

I think the realization that such a thing was not possible occurred to me quite young, and my research and musings since have only reinforced the obviousness of that realization.

Our consciousness is really only a collection of our memories and experiences, that are contained within the computer housed within our skulls.

Once that amazing machine is rendered inoperable our memories, our consciousness, our soul if you will, are also gone forever.

This would seem as obvious as the realization that once the heart stops pumping blood our bodies no longer function, and yet the opposite is held so dear by so many of us that to suggest the lack of a life following this is considered heretical even by many of those who consider themselves non-religious. 

I often think of it in terms of a USB flash drive.

Though it may be fairly bulging with documents, and pictures, and video of a person's life, if there are no more computers left to read the information it essentially does not exist. And it is as if the life contained within was never lived.

That is why I always stress the importance of experiencing all this life has to offer. Rather than mourn the loss of eternity, instead we should embrace and squeeze joy out of the one life that we have.

Every kiss should be savored, every laugh echoed by our own, and every moment of pain respected for the lesson that it teaches.

In that way we will touch the lives of those around us in a fashion which carries some small part of us forward. And as they touch the lives of others as well, perhaps our brief life will have an impact that lives past our final breath.

The real difference between the Atheist and the Theist.

Essentially at its core the difference is that the religious are concerned with life after death, while the non-religious are focused on the one before.

We live our lives as if it is our only one, because it is.

Therefore we enjoy it for the opportunity that it provides to live, laugh, and love without the fear that living too fully, laughing too long, or loving too much will deny us access to the more rewarding life that some have convinced themselves follows this.

The reality of you.

Years ago I took a behavioral science class.

As part of the syllabus were handed papers on different mental illnesses and psychosis.

One of them was a list of thinking errors that allow sexual predators to victimize the helpless.

On that list was the "I'm special" delusion, which allows these people to believe that normal rules and limitations do not pertain to them. Because, after all, they are "special."

After reading that I could not help but ponder all of the other people who also share that belief.

Burglars, murderers, arsonists, and then the ones that are not necessarily among the criminal class, actors, politicians, evangelists.

Then taking that concept to its natural conclusion I realized that on some fundamental level, ALL of us have a little bit of that thinking error in our DNA.

It is how religions are formed. People are made to feel that they are chosen by God, identified as special, and that all they have to do is follow a certain series of special guidelines to earn a special reward, that is reserved for those deemed special enough to earn it.

In that case the "I am special" assertion is expanded to the "we are special" thinking error, and that is how those of various religions, all self identifying as "religions of peace," can murder each other with impunity.

After all they don't have to bother themselves with the laws of man, they are following a higher law.

A "special law."

Given to them by a special entity, who chose them, and helped them to see themselves as "special."

Imagine how much more peaceful our planet would be if we realized our reality.

That we are all the same. And in being the same we are ALL special enough to deserve love, special enough to give love, and special enough to live free of violence and strife, and instead to celebrate this moment when our matter came together to form us.

You know one of the things that always bothers me about religious apologists is the notion that they support religious freedom. When in fact if it were possible in America they absolutely would not.

A person of faith believes that they have made the correct choice in who and how they worship.

In fact they believe that EVERYBODY else, who is not an adherent to their faith, is dead wrong. And what's more that their choice will result in the other person being denied the rewards offered to them and condemned to an eternal punishment which they believe they will be spared.

Now many of them will sugarcoat this, but that is only because it is considered socially unacceptable to challenge the faith of others in public. In private, among their own, they do not hold back when condemning and even ridiculing the religious beliefs of others.

This is often my thought when I hear religious people say that Atheists are "arrogant." As if there were ANYTHING more arrogant than a person who believes that THEY, with their seemingly massive intellect, have deduced, out of the thousands of possibilities, not only which god truly exists but also exactly by which methods one can garner his, or her, favor and thereby reap the rewards for their supplication.

This is why the argument that there must be a creator has never held any validity for me.

When I was in college I engaged in a 12 hour discussion about the existence of God and need for religion with my roommate who had a genius level IQ and what they call an Eidetic memory.

It was a great conversation but this was the argument that ground everything to a halt, because, though he refused to admit defeat, he was unable to produce a reasonable explanation.

Ultimately he said "Well you have to have faith that God has always been, and will always be."

Nope. I certainly do not.

This, this should be the bedtime story that we all read to our children every night.

How empowering would it be to realize, as a small child, the enormity of your heritage?

To know that the elements that make up their body were delivered from the heavens, and that they once made up titans of space and traveled through the galaxy at enormous speed just to bring them to life?

You can keep your Bible, your Qaran, and other books of fairy tales, because the reality of who we are, and where we came from, is SO much more impressive than the limp colorless stories trapped within their pages.

One of the last Palin-bots standing wants to launch survey into how Palin has impacted tourism in Alaska. Here let me help, remember how that giant meteor impacted the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago? Yeah like that.

"Anecdotal evidence suggest that when Sarah Palin is a factor in travel to Alaska, tourists spend up to three times as much as those where she's not a factor." I'm sorry is that "anecdotal evidence" just another way of saying "facts I pulled out of my ass?" And what is with the flag hanging in the background? Does this guy think that makes people more likely to believe his bullshit?

By the way some of the programs that he lists as having come AFTER Palin's crappy reality show were either already planned before hers was filmed, or had already been airing before hers was filmed. In other words she does NOT get to take credit for them.

Look I can save this idiot a lot of time by telling him that it is universally accepted here in Alaska that Palin caused a LOT of people to have a negative view of our state, and just on this blog alone I have been told by dozens of people that they changed their plans to visit due exclusively to Sarah Palin. and what she represents.

Of course his sample will be skewed because he is reaching out to the handful of people left who actually like Snowdrift Snooki, and I have to say he is being pretty confident to think there are 300 of them left who will respond to his survey, and give him $1,500 to launch is so-called "economic impact study."

By the way as of this post there have ONLY been $490.00 raised, from nine donations, in twelve days, even though he has plastered it over every pro-Palin site in existence. Which in my opinion tells you quite a lot right there.

But you know the truth is that few of us actually recognize the precariousness of our situation, instead believing that we are somehow protected by more than just a thin layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.

Personally I find the idea that we are hanging in space, surrounded by a life giving bubble, and orbiting a giant ball of fire kind of exhilarating. Looking at it from that perspective sort of changes us from boring humans comfortably living out our lives on a mother earth, to courageous cosmonauts hurtling through space at blinding speeds, surrounded by potentially deadly planetary bodies, and with nobody at the helm.

Oh yeah, that is TOTALLY how I am going to think of us from now on!

Why, despite their election losses, working with the Republicans will continue to present a challenge.

A new poll conducted by Dartmouth government professor Benjamin Valentino found that 63 percent of Republican respondents still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the United States invaded in 2003, even though this assertion has been thoroughly debunked. In comparison, only 27 percent of independents and less than 15 percent of Democrats believed in the misinformation. Additionally, 64 percent of Republican respondents believe that President Obama was born in another country. As the Huffington Post’s Dan Froomkin notes, “this latest poll result seems to indicate a refusal — unique to the modern Republican Party — to acknowledge facts.”

I once worked with a little boy who went around telling all of the other kids in the camp that HE was the fastest runner in the world. He was an arrogant little shit who came from a wealthy family and liked to bully smaller children.

I finally got tired of the little snot and, since this was a gymnastics camp, I decided to put a up a chart with their times for the 40 yard dash with the idea that they would then try to beat those times in subsequent attempts.

As you may have already guessed the so-called "fastest runner in the world" finished very near the bottom.  And in later attempts, due to his poor participation in the training portions of the camp, he did not improve hardly at all, while others made significant improvements.

However this fact, which was on clear display for the entire camp, did nothing to dissuade this son of privilege from continuing to brag that he was the best athlete and the fastest runner. As it turned out his ego, and need to be the best, overshadowed anything as insignificant as mere facts.

And so it goes with the majority of the Republican party. That poll referenced in the above data was conducted in April through May of this year, but it is unlikely that the number has changed one little bit.

Which begs the question, how do you work with the party behind failed policies and unnecessary wars, if they refuse to recognize that the policies did indeed fail and that wars were not necessary?

In other words how do you make reality based compromises with a party that lives within their very own reality?

Have you vaccinated your children yet?

Wouldn't it be great if science were finally able to eradicate superstition and ignorance throughout the world?

I don't even think I would miss the Republicans.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A group called The Earthquake Movement is responsible for a series of Cedar Rapids billboard ads supporting Sarah Palin for the Republican presidential nomination. 

An electronic billboard near The Ar-Jay Center on Council Street NE has recently been displaying a series of four advertisements involving Sarah Palin. None of the ads actually contain Palin's image, but include messages like, "Nominate Sarah Palin for President," and "Sudden and Relentless Reform - Delegates are Unbound," as well as "Palin 2012" and "Sarah Palin Supporters Unite." 

According to an email from a representative of The Earthquake Movement, the group has sent informational packets to delegates around the country, asking them to be one of the five required majority state delegations needed to nominate Palin in the first round of voting at the Republican National Convention. The packets also ask for delegates to nominate Palin in the second round if presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney does not receive the required number of delegates in the first round. 

The Earthquake Movement has also distributed information on Palin's "record, accomplishments and why we think she is the person who can excite the base and defeat President Obama in November." 

"We are finding a lot of unhappy Republican voters," the email said. "They feel like the RNC is not listening to them and based on voter turn out in the primaries and what we are hearing from Conservative Americans, they want her to emerge from the convention as the nominee. They are also very angry that she was not given a prime time speaking spot at the convention and are wondering if the RNC is attempting to shut her out because her message resonates with so many of us fly-overs. Are they afraid if she speaks prior to the vote or at all, we will have an averted Reagan experience?"

Oh that is just about the saddest, most pathetic thing I have ever seen.

Bristol Palin's short-lived reality series, "Life's a Tripp!" has been canceled by Lifetime, but lawsuits are still pending against the young star and the network. A local man has again sued Palin and Lifetime for capturing him on film and airing his words without explicit permission.

Okay well right now THIS is the only source I can find that says the show is cancelled. If anybody else finds more please send them our way.

I cannot imagine that it would necessarily surprise too many of us, though to be honest I kind of thought the Grizzled Mama had signed some sort of contract with Lifetime to air ALL of the episodes. Or perhaps the contract was just to make sure they aired the one last night where she scripted that her daughters had to spend the entire episode telling the camera how awesome she is, what a rock star she is, and how grateful they are to have her as their mother, because I'm sure THAT was the one that she cared about the most!

Since the announcement last week that “Life’s a Tripp” would be moved to 11 p.m. – placing it after a full hour of “Dance Moms” repeats — morale has been low around this recap blog. This new time slot is as cold as the Alaskan wilderness. 

Hard to believe we’re on the fifth episode already, but time flies when you’re having almost no fun at all and the network is blowing through the season so it can have more room in the schedule for that show starring Jennifer Love Hewitt’s cleavage.

Oh yeah, everybody just LOVES this show.

Update 2: False alarm, the show is not cancelled, apparently the editors at Christian Post are not exactly on the ball.  Here is how it has been rewritten now:

Bristol Palin's short-lived reality series, "Life's a Tripp!" has been canceled from its time slot by Lifetime and has been moved to a less prominent showtime, but lawsuits are still pending against the young star and the network.

Well good, now we get to watch the rotted corpse decay right before our eyes. Good times!
