The innocents always suffer.

Israel steeply escalated its military campaign against Hizbollah in Lebanon yesterday with a series of air strikes that left more than 35 civilians dead, including a single strike on a convoy of families fleeing the fighting in a village near Tyre in the south of the country that killed more than 20 people, most of them children.

They have no voice, they have no one to defend them against the bombs, and they have no hope.

Who knows what kind of future these children might have helped to usher in. Maybe they could have been their countries best hope for peace. But now they are gone.

And what of the survivors? Will the children growing up in this war-torn reality embrace hate and revenge, or will they rise above their past and try to achieve the kind of future that their parents could never make happen?

It seems remote that the children watching their families blown apart will ever look upon Israel as anything except an enemy of their people. Where is our hope for the future?
