Binky the bear is rolling over in his grave as Alaskan politicians favor oil development over protecting Polar Bears.

The state of Alaska is bolstering efforts to overturn the listing of the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Attorney General Dan Sullivan announced Wednesday he has filed a supplement to the state's earlier lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C. In it, the state claims the U.S. Department of Interior did not respond to the state's concerns in a timely manner before polar bears were listed last year.

Former Gov. Sarah Palin and the state filed an initial lawsuit in August 2008, fearing a listing would cripple offshore oil and gas development in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, which provide prime habitat for the only polar bears under U.S. jurisdiction.

Gov. Sean Parnell, who succeeded Palin upon her resignation last summer, joined Sullivan at a news conference in which they said the Endangered Species Act was being used as a way to shut down resource development along Alaska's northern coast. Parnell said he does not intend to let that happen.

I think it is time for Alaskans to let our Governor and our Attorney General know that MOST Alaskans love polar bears and would desperately like to protect them.

What? You want to know how I know that?

Because I used to go to the Alaska Zoo during the years that Binky the Polar Bear was the most famous resident there. That's how!

Binky was the MOST popular attraction at the Alaska Zoo for almost twenty years. People came from far and wide to get a look at this magnificent animal.

There were Binky stuffed animals , Binky coloring books, Binky children's books, you name it and there was a Binky version of it.

At first Binky was only famous in Alaska, but in 1994 after an Australian tourist got too close to Binky's cage, he gained international fame.

I know what you are thinking, "Holy crap that bear almost ate that poor woman!" And my response to that is, "No kidding dumbass, he is a freaking POLAR BEAR! That is why there are all of those giant metal bars around him!"
However my point is that before Binky started collecting the shoes of Australian tourists, he was already an icon here in Anchorage. And do you know why?

Because Alaskans love their wildlife, and they especially love their polar bears. And why not? They are gorgeous, they are powerful, they are independent, and seeing one up close was absolutely breathtaking.

Governor Parnell and AG Sullivan seem to only be motivated by the desire for profit and the knee jerk desire to protect the big oil companies that line the pockets of the GOP up here in Alaska.

This party, and these companies, simply cannot be bothered with demonstrating compassion for a species that is losing its natural habitat at an alarming rate. Oh no, that may somewhat reduce the obscene amount of money they make off of oil production! We can't have that!

You know what I think? I think that Governor Parnell does not understand just how much Alaskans love and honor the polar bears that share our beautiful state. Perhaps he needs to hear that. You can totally tell him by clicking here. And while you are at it, perhaps AG Sullivan needs to hear from you as well.

Clearly we do not have to convince the Obama administration as they are ready to put aside 200,541 square miles on the coast of Alaska as critical habitat for polar bears.

So the question is simple. Do we continue to drill for, and burn fossil fuels, while destroying critical polar ice and the bears that call it home? Or do we demonstrate that we have learned from our past mistakes and are ready to start respecting the creatures that share this planet with us, and to working to ensure their survival?

OT -- It looks like Levi really is writing a book!

Can't post the link but there is a Levi story on Gawker.com today re: the Playgirl shoot and it quotes Tank Jones saying that Levi is working on a book about the Palin family.

I can't take it any more. I am surrounded by shoot it, mine it, drain it, pave it, gun/cold dead hand types and I haven't a single real live person to talk environment with. It is so painfully obvious to me that we cannot go on trashing our world. There is an area in the Pacific the size of, I think, Texas, that is nothing but drifting plastic trash. I am beginning to give up. Honest. I saw a pic of that poor polar bear clinging to a small piece of ice, and it was on a humor site because of the shape of the piece of ice. A humor site! What is wrong with these people? [end of rant; sorry, today was a really bad hair one]

When I took an environmental law class, we were told that there was a legal precedent that financial impacts can not be considered when considering whether to list an animal under the ESA.

  5. I don't know what it is with some people and wild animals. Did they have too many stuffed animals that made them forget these animals can kill?

I was in Glacier National Park in Montana on a family trip about 20 years ago. We were hiking on a trail that went up into a remote area. Just off the trail within plain view was a mountain goat mother and her kids right behind her.

So of course there was a tourist inching up to her to get a better picture. My dad said to her, "You don't want to get too close to her. She has her young with her and is likely to buck you." Amazingly the goat momma had more brains than the tourist and didn't buck her because that tourist was a hop away.

  6. More of the Arctic ice photos kept secret by the Bush Administration

    http://trueslant.com/jeffmcmahon/2009/07/26/declassified-arctic-ice-photos/

It is absolutely disgusting what these people are trying to do. Bush got away with it by hiding information like linked above.

A prominent marine scientist at the University of Alaska has been denied his federal research grant and evicted from his office because he was an "advocate" for environmental protection, according to a ruling released yesterday by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).According to the press release, "the university cited pressure from the grant agency, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, to silence the scientist’s public critique of oil industry Arctic development plans as a key rationale for its decision."

    http://www.care2.com/causes/environment/blog/marine-scientist-loses-federal-funding-for/

The Obama administration bowed to environmental groups and added a layer of protection for polar bear today, setting aside 200,000 square miles of Alaskan coastline and waters as their "critical habitat".

The decision would put restrictions on oil and gas drilling along the north coast of Alaska. It was brought in partial settlement of a law suit brought by environmentalists.

The "critical habitat" designation would bar government agencies from authorising activities that could hurt recovering species.

But it does not address the broader question of how to stop the melting of the Arctic that is putting the iconic animal at risk of going extinct.

  9. It's still Palin's administration so naturally the thugs are still in control and will fight any environmental policy challenging their right to rape Alaska. Heaven help us until all their crazy a$$ supporters become an endangered specie and we let them become extinct. Their belief in the end of days makes it all ok?? Primal scream!!

Please Alaskans raise hell with Parnell!! He is still Palin's puppet as far as I can see. All of us need to let the US Dept. of Interior know that Polar Bears are important to all of us; not just Alaskans. Anon@4:44pm, thanks for your rant. ITA.

  13. Poor Binky, he was a magnificent bear. Crew was constructing a second set of bars around his enclosure last time I saw him. Binky was swimming when one of the workers taunted him by putting his hand through the first set. Never saw anything move so fast or so far in one leap as Binky did! Out of the pool and at the offender in a nanosecond. Guy was lucky not to be mauled like the shoe lady.
